Tavernier/Vučkić help Rotherham Utd secure promotion to Championship

Newcastle loanees James Tavernier and Haris Vučkić played for Rotherham Utd in the League One promotion playoff final. The match finished extra time at 2-2 and went to PKs. Rotherham won the PKs 4-3, one of which was scored by Tavernier.

Incidentally, Alex Revell's 2nd half equalizer for Rotherham was awesome.

Tiote given suspended sentence for fake driver's license

Remember that Cheick Tiote news story we couldn't make head or tail of back in February? Well, he's been given a suspended sentence, community service, and fines in return for pleading guilty to using a forged Belgian driver's license. A charge of driving without insurance will be dealt with separately.

Pardew says Ashley just doesn't understand

Alan Pardew says sometimes football makes Mike Ashley angry. Mike smash!!!

We're #1!!! (in arrests, sadly)

175 arrests at football matches in 2012-13, more than any other club in England. 100 of those, not surprisingly, resulted from the loss to you-know-who (that includes Barry the Horse Puncher).

FA expands retrospective action powers

The FA has broadened its definition of a "not seen" incident and specifically calls out the McManaman tackle on Haidara in its announcement.

Alan Shearer's sickened by Kinnear appointment

So sickened in fact, he can barely manage a two-sentence paragraph.

Premier League finances: turnover, wages, debt and performance 2011-12

A summary of Premier League finances from the Guardian. Note that the data are for the 2011-12 season (I nearly wrote "last season", but sadly this season is now last season). I'll be interested to see QPR's Wage Bill vs. League Position rank when the 2012-13 numbers come out.

Brighton knocked out of promotion playoffs

Brighton 0-2 Crystal Palace (0-2 agg) So, we'll just have to go back to dreading getting Brighton again in the FA Cup draw instead of worrying about playing them twice a season in the league.

Martinez continues McManaman excuses tour

Roberto Martinez is at pains to point out there's no comparison between Luis Suarez and Callum McManaman.

Steve Harper being shoved out the door

A sad end for a man who's been with the club while a dozen managers have come and gone.

Marseille confirm deal with NUFC for Remy (Sky Sports)

The article title is misleading. Marseille have agreed to the transfer and have given permission for Remy to negotiate with Newcastle. Still work to be done.

Shola NOT going to ACoN

Shola will not be going to the African Cup of Nations with Nigeria. Pards declines to explain why.

Demba Ba release clause complicating contract negotiations

The subject of Ba's infamous release clause came up in today's matchday thread. According to this article, the clause is a) real, and b) activated during each transfer window while Ba's current contract, which runs until 2014, is in place.

FSC/ESPN have lost US rights to Premier League for 2013-16 seasons

NBC Universal is apparently the front runner. What their plans are is anybody's guess.

The "Demba window" is still open

We've been lied to... again. The dreaded buy-out clause in Demba Ba's contract will apparently still be in effect during the January transfer window. Let the panic resume. On a side note: how long will Ba be referred to as "the former West Ham striker"? I guess if he leaves in January, the media will have to switch to "the former Newcastle striker."

Captain Colo named to PFA Premier League Team of the Year

I wasn't impressed when he first joined the squad, but given the player he's become (and the fact he's stuck with the team through thick and thin), I happily eat crow.
