Does Raiders HC, Hue Jackson, lack talent for evaluating players?

6:40 remaining in the 2nd Half is representative of Groves' standard of play and what our coaches are prepared to offer us this season.

Raiders two weakest positions

If your impressions from the Arizona game were like mine, your overall feeling is "guarded optimism", that the overall play of our O, D and STs is far better than decent. But, you also came away...

Nation's take on divisional outcome

In the spirit of today's theme of prognostication, I ask, "How many divisional games will the Raiders take away this season? Will they sweep again? If we don't sweep, who will mar our quest for...

Raiders sign two vet Safeties

Today, Oakland signed veteran safeties Matt Giordano and Josh Bullocks. Matt Giordano is a hard hitting safety (at least) so he may fit our Bully mold. Giordano played for the Colts (a 4th round...

Raiders "Next Man Up" Policy ... and cruel reality

Most of us realized early that Oakland has a strong group of starters but lacks depth - with the exceptions of our RBs and DTs - and that while it's nice (in theory) to have a "Next Man Up" policy,...

Could have had him: Casey Matthews To Start As Eagles MLB

With all of the improvements the Eagles have made this week in free agency, the signing of cornerbacks Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie and Nnamdi Asomugha, and the addition of defensive end Jason Babin, one question remains: who will play middle linebacker? In a press conference last Friday, new defensive coordinator Juan Castillo announced that rookie Casey Matthews out of Oregon, brother of Packers star linebacker Clay Matthews, would be the middle linebacker in his defense, saying that the job was his to lose. The Eagles selected Matthews in the fourth round not because he was overly athletic, but because he was extremely intelligent. When asked about his decision to give Matthews first string reps, Castillo responded, "The thing about it is that he is a football player. He's smart. He has that 'it'. At middle linebacker we want somebody who can get everyone lined up; someone that can be a leader." The Eagles have solidified multiple facets of their defense this week, but the linebacker position is one that had yet to be addressed. Stewart Bradley started at middle linebacker last season before he sustained an ACL injury ending his season. Bradley will reportedly not be back in time for the beginning of the 2011 season, which begged the question, "Who will play middle linebacker in his stead?" Well, now we have our answer. Only time will tell if Casey Matthews can live up to the family name, but if he can rise to the challenge the Eagles will have one of the top defenses in the league. Babin and Trent Cole will provide a strong pass rush on the defensive line while Asomugha and Rodgers-Cromartie will make it difficult to throw the ball anywhere except over the middle. According to Castillo, safety Nate Allen, who left last season with an ACL injury, is healthy and making plays. With Asomugha and Rodgers-Cromartie now on the roster, sources speculate that the Eagles will look to deal Asante Samuel. If they do not address the linebacker position in a trade with Asante Samuel and Casey Matthews continues to impress in training camp, look for the him to take the field as a starter on opening day against the Rams in St. Louis.

Raiders magic number

Last season, the Raiders won every game in which their Time of Possession (TOP) was equal to or greater than 33 minutes. And, if the Arizona game is tossed out (lost at the end by a fluke) then 31...

If Jason acts like a Leader and teammates follow him, then he is a Leader

It's true that leaders have different styles of command and that anyone assuming the QB role is, at least,  in the role of leadership. That role, however, doesn't guarantee that the person holding...

More to be hopeful about: Raiders will draft at Linebacker

Oakland Raiders Free Agent Status Update

Like Romans at the Gladiatorial contests, I invite you to render your judgment on their futures in Oakland ... thumbs up or thumbs down.

Raiders hire Rod Woodson as defensive backs coach

Raiders Linebackers: Taking Stock, 3-4 Or Not

How we might prepare for the Black Hole: Cold Water Training by Stew Smith There is an argument as to whether some people are genetically wired to handle colder temperatures, or whether one must build stamina for lower temperatures by training in colder environments (water or land). I believe it is a little bit of both. When I was attending SEAL Training, the water off San Diego was brutal to new recruits. Typically, water temperatures were (at best) 69 degrees during the warmest part of the summer and dropped to in the low 50's during the winter. Then in dive phase, at about 15 feet underwater, you would hit a thermo-cline and water temperature was in the low 40's. That was when BUD/S got cold, especially during a winter dive phase. /// People often ask me, "What is the best way to train for the cold water at BUD/S? Do I take ice baths, cold showers, or sit in a pool for hours?" For me, what I think helped me was hours of surfing/body surfing a few years prior to BUD/S. Physical training such as swimming/surfing /playing in water temperature near those of San Diego is what I would recommend for short periods of time. Do not let yourself get to a point where you are shaking uncontrollably or (especially) not shaking at all, as you can die if you play around too much with your core temperature. Therefore, I do not recommend placing ice in a bath tub and dropping the water temperature to arctic levels. Colder showers are OK if you like mild torture, but training for cold water-endurance by yourself can be dangerous.
