MMAmania.com Ben Saunders released from the UFC following Aug. 7 loss to Dennis Hallman

Saundersheadkick

"Killa B" announces the unfortunate news via his official Facebook page:

"Sorry everyone I tried to fight my best these past two fights but ended up getting outworked. The UFC has officially cut me. The good news is they told me to work on my wrestling and ground game and then come back. So that is all I am going to be doing, improving dramatically and show them I belong. Much respect to Swick, Fitch, and Hallman as they were the better men on those nights and have my full respect. To fight such names is a true honor."

Saunders had heart, stepping up for the Fitch fight at UFC 111. There's still a number of fights I'd like to see him in like Anthony Johnson, Dan Hardy and Phil Baroni.

Anyone else sorry to see him go?

MMAmania.com Bernard Hopkins: 'James Toney is out of his league and will get his ass kicked'

Toney-takes-the-cake_medium

Props: Yahoo Sports

Quoteworthy:

"For real. James Toney is out of his league... When you step out into a situation where, against a legend too in his own sport. I believe, and I'll go on the record, that the best MMA guy or UFC guy go up against the best boxer in the world in their arena, in their arena gets their ass kicked. I don't care who it is, whether Floyd, Pacquiao, Bernard Hopkins, they get they ass kicked. That is not what we do."

Count former middleweight champion Bernard "The Executioner" Hopkins among the boxing elite that doesn't give pugilist James Toney much of a chance when he faces Randy Couture at UFC 118 on Aug. 28 in Boston. But what about Mayweather and Pacquiao? No takedown defense = no chance of winning?

Joe Rogan & Bryan Callen talk Silva vs. GSP, M1/Fedor, and Boxing! (via Romain1212)

Per usual, for the word limit, here is your news flash.

BARCELONA, Spain – Lawmakers in Catalonia outlawed bullfighting Wednesday, making it Spain's first major region to ban the deadly, centuries-old ballet between matador and beast after heated debate that pitted animal rights against a pillar of traditional culture.

Cheers broke out in the local 135-seat legislature after the speaker announced the ban had passed 68-to-55 with nine abstentions. The ban will take effect in 2012 in the northeastern coastal region whose capital is Barcelona.

MMAmania.com Kickboxer dies after KO

 Adrienne-300x225_medium

A kickboxer who was knocked unconscious during a fight on Sunday has died.

Adrienne Simmons received a left hook during the third round of a three-round bout at the Marriott Orlando World Center Marriott resort, according to the Orange County Sheriff's Office.

She died Monday afternoon, according to Orlando Regional Medical Center, where she had been transported.

The fight was part of a kick-boxing match sponsored by the International Kick-Boxing Federation. After Simmons received the blow, an IKF doctor treated her and she was transported to the hospital, the sheriff's office said.

MMAmania.com Big Races: Berserk bull 1, Aleksander Emelianenko -2

Aleks_emelianenko_tattoos_medium

"It looks like during a Russian game-show called 'Big Races' (which is shot in France), Aleksander Emelianenko participated in a competition with a bull to see if he was more of a 'beast' than an actual beast. Not sure on the exact details of the contest, but from what I understand, it involved a no-rules match that somehow included urine. In the end of the competition, the bull stepped on Aleksander's face and knocked out two of his teeth. From the reports, the studio was literally filled with blood and Aleks was rushed to a local French hospital to insert his two teeth which he apparently picked up after the incident."

MMAmania.com Lloyd Irvin Home Invasion

http://link.brightcove.com/services/player/bcpid30317508001?bctid=194480990001

In the pre-dawn hours of Oct. 4, Irvin woke up on his couch at 4:30 am to find two gunmen standing over him. Taking bold action when the opportunity arose, Irvin disarmed one of the perpetrators, forcing them both to flee. No one was hurt in the attempted home invasion, but now the case has taken a chilling twist.

According to Washington D.C. news outlets including WUSA-9, police now believe that one of the men involved in Irvin's home invasion attempt is a suspected serial killer.

The news station's website says the Prince George County, Maryland police are holding a "person of interest" that police chief Robert Hylton calls a serial killer.

The suspect, whose name has not yet been released publicly, is being held on federal gun charges pending indictment in at least one murder case, according to WUSA.

"This person is going to be responsible for additional murders," Hylton told the news outlet, who also reported that murder indictments could come next week.

According to various reports, at least five deaths are being investigated in conjunction with the person of interest, who seemed to target mothers and daughters who lived together.

His targeting of Irvin's family may have proved to be his undoing. Irvin is a highly decorated martial artist, with black belts in jiu-jitsu, judo and combat sambo. He's also spent considerable time instructing police and military teams on the use of martial arts in real-life situations, including defensive gun and knife techniques. Apparently, Irvin's methods have practical application, as he reportedly removed the gun clip from one home invader's weapon before removing the gun from his hands.

“No question about it —this is not a kid who’s going to get in there and get nervous. I absolutely see big things for him,” said Zugec. “I see him already with some similarities to (Jose) Aldo. His ground game is good, he’s a strong wrestler, he’s got good hips, and he’s hard to take down. No one really knows how good is ground game is yet because no one can get him down. And he can punch and kick so well.”

MMAmania.com King of the Cage 7/10

This past weekend I had the chance to go check out KOTC in Elsinore (25ish minutes with skilled driving) for free -buddy has a magazine and they did some pics/features - and 22 of us took up floor row 5. These tix were marked @ $75.00

It was at Storm Stadium and the crowd wasn't big, maybe a third of seats filled, but bigger than last time i was told.  I don't remember the name of any of the fighters but they were all local, from the surrounding cities.  The fights, overall, were decent.  One fight, in which the winner was apparent went to split decision and the obvious loser of the fight got the nod.  Could't believe it, then they announced Cecil Peoples as one of the Judges.  Oh and another interesting thing, was that the In ring announcer is the recently cast off WEC announcer (don't know his name).  Anyways back to the fights.  One fight between this yoked black dude (fighter A) and an equally intimidating looking mexican guy who i remember name was Paul (fighter B) ended rather odd.  Fighter A accidental nutshot to fighter B.  B, is either hurt bad or milking to recover as he is taking the full 5 minutes.  B at the end of 5 minutes can't continue (crowed goes crazy) and the bout is initially ruled a Technical Draw. Then after a  minute or two, the outcome is changed and it's announced that since fighter B was unable to continue after the allotted 5 minutes, fighter A has won!  I thought it should have been a No Contest? or maybe even winner by dq, fighter B? i don't get how a fighter wins after his opponent is no longer to continue following an ILLEGAL blow. The rest of the fights were good and the HW bout for the Belt was very entertaining ending with the undefeated champ continuing his reign.  I got to meet and chat with him at a local bar after, he was a cool dude!

Back to the crowd, again.  I'm not sure if it was rampid throughout the entire audience or if i was just unlucky to have a pack of assclowns behind me.  It was the typical, all you can imagine, douche baggery of backyard fight fans. This is only a tad of what i can remember, and why i took many trips to the bar:

OOOOOOOOHHHHHH YEAAAAA (at literally anything), quit running away pussy, stand-up like a man, break his ribs, snap his femur (my personal favorite), fuck the ref up, and the like.

But, even with a crowd of droolers, i personally didnt see one fan far altercation, but there were also police in packs, everywhere.  Also, the ring girls, specifically 3 of the 6, blew the UFC girls out of the water.

So, overall all, it was a good time of free, decent fights.

MMAmania.com UFC Quick Quote: Brock Lesnar responds to commands

Lesnar-belt_medium

"He took some hard shots when they were against the fence, he was looking for a way out. He was blocking some punches. At one point he tried to spin to push Shane away and took a couple shots. And then again, went for a deep half guard position and took a couple more shots. When he curled up after that is when I commanded him to fight back, which at that point he did, and then he went for feet on the hips to push Carwin away and was able to get to his knees. He pretty much ran with it. He heard -- he responded to my commands."

-- Referee Josh Rosenthal was recently a guest on ESPNs "MMA Live," explaining his critical decision to let heavyweight champion Brock Lesnar continue in the first round despite eating more than 50 Shane Carwin knuckle sandwiches. Lesnar was moving, and he eventually got to his feet toward the end of the round, but few would have said boo if Rosenthal stopped the UFC 116 main event before that time. Lesnar even thanked Rosenthal several times in his post-fight remarks. That's because he came out in round two and choked out an "adrenaline-dumped" Carwin to miraculously retain his title. Steve Mazzagatti, take notes.

MMAmania.com Dave Batista latest goon to the Caesar Gracie gym

Former World Wrestling Entertainment star Dave Batista started a two-day training stint with the Cesar Gracie camp Wednesday after Strikeforce helped facilitate the connection with the potential signee and the noted California gym.

Gracie told Sherdog.com that Batista arrived this afternoon and is working technique drills with Nick and Nathan Diaz, Jake Shields and Gilbert Melendez in the Cesar Gracie gym in Lodi, Calif.

"We'll see how it goes," Gracie said. "If he wants to fight, we'll get him going."

Strikeforce is negotiating with the multi-time Wrestlemania headliner to try his hand in MMA. A long-time fan of the sport, who has reportedly trained at the Affliction training facility in Los Angeles, Batista began talks with Strikeforce last month after ending a lucrative eight-year run with the WWE. Batista said in interviews that he had become disillusioned with the industry and has pursued film acting.

Scott Coker told Loretta Hunt earlier this week he's already got some ideas for the 41 year old combat sports virgin:

Coker said Batista's star power, and specifically his ability to draw on an equally strong demographic of viewers outside of MMA, is an obvious selling point for the would-be fighter.

When asked if former WWE champion and decorated college wrestler Bobby Lashley was under consideration as a potential opponent for Batista, Coker acknowledged that the bout had some cache.

"That would just be a fun fight to watch," said Coker.

MMAmania.com Jake Shields: Strikeforce wants to push 'has beens' like Shamrock and Le -- not great young fighters

Shields-dana-2_medium

Props: BJPenn.com

Quoteworthy:

"I’m brand new to the UFC but they have treated me absolutely wonderful much better than Strikeforce to this point. They return my phone calls and I get seats unlike Strikeforce but so far things have been absolutely perfect. I don’t want to knock Strikeforce because that’s not my style even though they did treat me like shit which was unnecessary because I never talked bad about them. Honestly I would love to see Gilbert and Nick in the UFC. Even though Strikeforce is a good show, everyone knows it’s the number two show. They have a handful of good fighters but all the top competition is in the UFC and I feel that Nick and Gilbert are good enough to fight at the highest level. I just don’t see Strikeforce putting the marketing strength behind him as they didn’t for me. I feel like they (Strikeforce) want to go after the places that have already been built like Shamrock or Cung Le. They don’t seem really interested in building top young fighters in their prime. They had a great batch of young fighters like me, Nick, Gil and King Mo but they weren’t interested in great young fighters and instead all the push went to 'has beens' like Shamrock and Cung Le. It seemed like they wanted to push people who were no where near their prime."

Former Strikeforce Middleweight Champion Jake Shields talks about his time in Strikeforce as he prepares for what seems like an inevitable run within the ranks of the UFC. The Cesar Gracie grappling guru wants to eventually bring team mates Nick Diaz and Gilbert Melendez over to the world's largest fight promotion and Shields is currently working on maintaining his size. Do you expect a middleweight debut with an eye towards Anderson Silva? Or will he make a run in the UFC's 170-pound division and get his wish of a Georges St. Pierre superfight?

MMAmania.com Shane Carwin: [I] Seized Up

He showed the heart of a Champion last night. Most men would fold under that kind of pressure.

I really appreciate all the support and messages. I am honored to have had the chance to fight for the belt and will be working my ass off to get another shot.

There are a lot of deserving fighters out there and now it is Cain's turn to see what he can do. I will be back in the mix soon enough.

As for my health, I am good. My body began to seize up towards the end of the 1st and it was totally locked up in between rounds. I told my Coaches I could not move my legs. I have never felt like that before in my life. I had to answer the bell so I did what I could do and went out like any warrior would do and tried to fight through it.

Being a Champion is about living and fighting through adversity. Brock Lesnar has done jsut that, not only in coming back to submit me but throughout his medical struggles too. I hope I can earn another shot someday.

For me I am going to do a signing today and then head home to be with my family and spend a little quality time on the lakes in my Malibu Boat. It has been a long camp and a even longer set of camps waiting for this fight. I need a rest.

Thank you to my coaches, sponsors and manager for everything you have done and continue to do for me. You guys have made this a fun journey and one I would travel anytime.

My goal is to win the UFC Heavyweight Title, I want to be the best fighter on the planet. I will be working hard and doing everything I need to do to earn that title.

For now I will settle for loving father, husband and loyal friend...

MMAmania.com Brock Lesnar on Fedor, Batista, and Carwin

"Good for Fedor [Emelianenko]. I hope he does retire. He's the greatest champion ever, of all-time, in his own little world," Brock said. "Good for him."
"Get in line, everybody [Dave Batista] and their dog wants to get into fighting," Brock said. "Next question. We're talking about a heavyweight championship fight, not some wannabe."
"I know what my credentials are. Shane [Carwin] knows what his are. I think mine outweigh his and I think my hand's going to get raised on July 3. And he probably feels the same thing. But that's the beauty of this fight game. We'll have to see what happens July 3."

"There's a lot of similarities, but he's a little better looking than I am. I'll give that to him and that's about it," Brock said

MMAmania.com Matt Hammil: I'm not good at striking

It just happened so fast and I just go all out with my hands. I don't know what happened. I just fought my heart out. It happened in the 1st round. I knew something was wrong with my hand.

I lost my power and I was trying to go for a takedown. When I grabbed his leg, I had no power to grip... It looked like the Hulk. [Shows his broken hand and Laughs] ...And then he poked me in the eye. I thought I was going to be blind and deaf. Enough Handicaps. But I could fight all night on the feet. Even though I'm not good at striking. But I'm glad I came and fought.

Keith Jardine is a great fighter. I just wanna be in the top ten fighters in the world. I just want to let people know that I am a great fighter. I want people to know that I belong in the UFC and I'm gonna do better next time. If you are not happy with the way I'm fighting, I'm sorry. I'll come back again and do a lot better. MMAmania.com Nick Diaz Suspended?

Sounds like a refusal to take a drug test? (ripped)

DAVE MELTZER: "I guess (Nick) Diaz is suspended."

BRYAN ALVAREZ: "I did not hear that."

DAVE MELTZER: "Yes, 90 days from, here's the deal... Diaz is suspended 90 days from the time that he returns a form to Tennessee which will then count the suspension from that point."

BRYAN ALVAREZ: "So he better get on that."

DAVE MELTZER: "And they're like scared that he's going to like never return the form so he'll be like suspended forever."

BRYAN ALVAREZ: "That's possible, actually. Very possible."

DAVE MELTZER: "So they're trying to make sure that he fills out that form and gets the clock ticking on that suspension so he can, because I was asking like when he's going to defend the title and it's like, you know, he's got 90 days suspension right now, you know that he's got to go through before he can fight anyone."

He's had to miss fights before because of his refusal to take drug tests in California. Will he impose an indefinite suspension on himself by failing to complete the paperwork and submit it to the Tennessee authorities?

And believe me when I tell you I tried to make it happen. You don't even know the crazy [expletive] places that I've flown and the [expletive] that I've done to try and get this fight done. "I've signed Brock Lesnar, who came from the WWE, James Toney from boxing - he's a nut chasing me all over the place - Tito Ortiz, whom I hated, and he hated me. I signed him twice when we hated each other. I've kept Chuck Liddell, kept Matt Hughes, kept Rich Franklin, when they were all champions. Anderson Silva, I've dealt with all the crazy [expletive] with him.

MMAmania.com Joe Rogan on Anderson Silva (ripped)

Joe Rogan: The reason why he stopped fighting, and this is only my personal opinion. The reason why he was dancing around in the 4th and 5th round, I think he got tired. That's what I think happened. I think all that explosive stuff he was doing, I think that wears you out. It's not like a normal pace. It's like sprinting and I think we were in a very humid climate, outdoors for the first time. I mean Abu Dhabi was hot. These bugs flying around look like birds. It was a freaky place. Does the environment, the stress of all the energy he was expending in those first few rounds have an affect?

I think he got tired and that's when Maia started coming after him and that's when Maia clipped him a couple of times. I think he didn't want to stand in there and you know, risk getting hit.........

I think Anderson is very aware that you know he's mortal, but yet he's put on this pedestal where he is like this almost this guy who's fighting in another dimension, like he's fighting in the matrix. He is so much better when he is explosive and fresh that I think he's aware of his own shortcomings as a human being.

I think that's one of the reasons why he sort of coasted in the Cote fight. I go back and when fights are questionable like that, one of the things I like to do is to go back and I watch them very carefully. I watched the Cote fight and I noticed there was a couple times where Cote clipped him with punches during the exchanges and I think he was aware like one of these could fuck me up! A couple times he got hit with some big shots in the exchanges and I think he just wanted to play it safe and make sure that what happened to Lyoto Machida is his last fight didn't happen to himself.

MMAmania.com Pat Barry has no killer Instinct

Killer Instinct vs Professional Discretion

I hate it when guys, WHEN THE OPPORTUNITY IS THERE, dont go for the kill.  First thing that comes to mind is Hughes helping up Renzo.  Lots of people bring up GSP/Hardy but im not sure.  BUT i also really respect when guys know its over and call it enough, ShoGun/Machida, Marquardt/Maia, and many others.

The once instance Barry refers to, remind me when KOS had Zenko? out on his feet before the bomb dropper.

one things forsure guys like JDS and Palhares are KILLERS!

I'm not a bloodthirsty animal. I've hit guys, and this is bad for me, but I've hit some guys with some real stiff shots and not followed it up. Like -- boom -- then kind of like look at them to see if they're OK. Not OK, but if they're dazed enough that the ref would stop the fight, versus some guy being unconscious, and, while he's unconscious, me hit him six more times before the ref gets to him. That's also bad because I've had guys in really bad situations where if I was to just bump into them a little, I'd finish the fight, and guys have gone from dazed to woken up. If you remember the Tim Hague fight [at UFC 98], when he stumbled back, he was out. He was like dazed. All I had to do was just touch him, but instead I backed up and looked at him. So by the time I got back to him, he was back awake again.

MMAmania.com Randy Couture: Rashad Can Make it a Long Night for Rampage

"It's interesting to see if Rashad has come all the way back from the knockout from Machida and psychologically how he's feeling about that. With a guy like Rampage who's a banger, he can hit. Both guys have the common fight with Chuck, similar outcomes.

"I think Rashad’s wrestling is stronger than Rampage’s. We saw Henderson control the early part of that fight with Rampage using some wrestling. So Rashad has that capability. Although until his last fight we hadn't seen that from him. He tries to stand and bang with everybody."

"I think if Rashad goes out and uses, implements the All-American wrestling that he has, he can make it a long night for Rampage."

"Rampage is a strong, very very good striker and it's going to be a game fight."

MMAmania.com Round Table Discussion: Where They Belong

it's slow today sooooo,

Inspired by a good discussion the other day with David W-S, I think they're are a few different levels, if you will, into which UFC greats fall into.  We had talked about these. Its rough, nothing extravagant, just from our convo so go easy and add/subtract guys, move them around, etc.

Icons  guys who were there from the beginning, but not the true mixed-martial artists that are synonymous with following generations of fighters. Some names that come to mind:

Dan Severn

Don Frye

Ken Shamrock

Tank Abbot

Kevin Randleman

Mark Coleman

Jens Pulver

Legends Guys who took the pioneer's torch and lit a fire. Used real skills, techniques, athleticism, and most importantly  cross training of bases to become phenominal fighters in the biggest exploding sport, and some of the most recognizable names in the industry. Mixed Martial Atrists.

Randy Couture

Chuck Liddell

Matt Hughes

Rich Franklin

Gracie

Tito Ortiz

Frank Shamrock

Wandy

Cro Cop

NOG

Hendo

Vitor Belfort

Bas Rutten

The Elite Guys who are on another level. A level above even some of the greatest most iconic names in all of MMA

Fedor

GSP

A. Silva

BJ Penn*

ShoGun

Lyoto Machida*

I am sure many guys could fit into other categories or even multiple ones, just something to chat about.  Itll be interesting in  years down the road where guys like KOS, Fitch, Edgar, Belcher, bisPING, Rashad, Rampage, Lyoto, Bones Jones, Phil Davis, JDS, Brock, and many more fit in.

Bloody Elbow Round Table Discussion: Leg kicks (Gifs)

This past weekend got me thinking, again, as to just how important and devastating leg kicks can be in MMA.  Next to the body shot, i think leg kicks follow as the least used tool in one's arsenal.  Lately, however we are seeing a surge and it really exemplifies what a great tool the leg kick really is.

I don't train, so correct me if i am wrong, but to get a nice flesh thumping leg kick, you want to pivot your standing leg while fully twisting the hips and body in the direction of the swing to bring the most momentum and force possible.

Off the top of my head recent fights like Hughes/Gracie, ShoGun/Machida I, Kimjoke/Mitrione, and of course Faber/Aldo have all come down to leg kicks and their ability to utterly disable the opponent and make all the difference in ending the fight.  Ive never been kicked by a professional fighter, but i am quite certain it is one of the worst experiences one could imagine himself enduring.  Ever had a dead leg?

I remember Matt Hughes once said it can take up to 6 months to get your legs/shins back to getting used to properly throwing and checking kicks.  Proper leg checks can mean the difference between hobbling back to your corner or fighting with spring in your step.  Or even worse, Cory Hiling yourself (that was a freak accident). From my understanding the basic leg check is leg up, shin at 45, and toes pointed out.  I am sure there are several ways, like everything.

That hurts to watch.

I am glad to see the leg kick is and will be even more in the future, a leading attack weapon in a fighter's arsenal of tools.  You can keep distance while viciously immobilizing your opponent and its effectiveness is shown time and time again.

Looks like a leg of a dead, bloated corpse pulled from the river. yikes.

Although legal, the less common highly frowned upon leg kick, is the Anderson Silva straight kick to the knee.  Frowned upon for obvious reasons such as ending someones career by blowing out their knee and causing untold damage.

Point in Case: The effectiveness of the nasty leg kicks wins fights and titles (Forrest)!  Whose' got the best leg kicks in the business?
