Southern Dawg

May 14, 2008 May 31, 2012 29 2118

I have never lived nor was i born in the state of Georgia, yet i am a diehard intense fan of the Classic City Canines. But growing up in Alabama my grandfather who graduated from UGA in the 60's got us into the bulldawgs when i was 12 or 13 around the end of the Quincy Carter/ Jim Donnan era. It was when Richt came along in his first year that we really got into the Dawgs and couldn't miss a game on TV or follow online. So that explains the question i always get wondering how i grew up in Alabama as a huge UGA fan.

a fan of

Atlanta Braves Major League Baseball Team

Indianapolis Colts National Football League Team

Georgia Bulldogs NCAA Men's Football Division 1A Team

Georgia Bulldogs NCAA Men's Basketball Division 1 Team

John Isner Tennis Player(s)

Bubba Watson Golfer(s)

Its honestly one of the most fun preview's you'll read. Plus after you are done you don't know whether to be deathly worried or insanely cocky

Washaun Ealey is no longer a bulldog. After a somewhat up and down career, Ealey will transfer out of UGA and has the freedom to transfer where-ever he chooses. This is disappointing in that you never like to see a player who is unable to get his act together enough to rejoin the team, it did seem like he was doing better at one point, but there were recent rumblings that he was back in danger of not returning to the team, and now it seems has played his last for the red and black. Either way i think this will benefit both parties in the end, and i hope he finds a home and success somewhere outside the SEC.

Dawg Sports DGP! (Damn Good Pup) Titus William Munger

I am happy to share with the Bulldog Nation the birth of my son and future #DGD Titus William Munger!! (see i wasn't fibbing about my reason for being unable to make it to G-day this year)

(would be a picture here but having trouble getting it up, click here or look for it in the comments section)

He was born at 3:39 pm today April 8th, 2011 at a healthy 8 lbs. 1 oz and 21 inches long. As is the duty of any good Dawg fan, i will now raise my hand and recite the DGD Parental Pledge**

I Southern Dawg, do solemnly swear to raise Titus to be a DGD.

To bleed Red and Black, and abhor every shade of orange.

I swear to teach him to recognize the voice of God,

and spell Herschel Walker even before his own name.

I swear to take him to his first game before he is 10 years old.

He will learn to bark before he can talk,

and when he does it will be Go Dawgs! Sic Em!

**Ok so i just made it up on the fly, feel free to edit or add to it as necessary, seriously it needs more bite to it,

"Over the past few weeks, Washaun has done the things we expect all our players to do," Richt said. "He’s been doing things the Georgia way, and will rejoin team activities Monday."

Great Article about early enrollee and all around DGD Chris Conley (WR). He looks to be the Renaissance Man of the Football team in every possible meaning of the title.

As some of you may have heard, the Valdosta Wildcats experienced a tragedy in the past few weeks. A senior football player, James Eunice, went missing, and drowned a couple weeks ago while duck hunting with a friend. After a 2 week search, his body was finally found and the funeral was held today. James was already accepted to UGA and was looking to walk-on to the football team after talking with Coach Richt during a Rome/Mitchell recruiting trip down here. He was never the most athletic player but had the most heart of any player on the field. He was a fine Christian young man, made straight A’s, and was very popular in school. Well at the funeral today the preacher called Jay Rome and Malcolm Mitchell up to the stage with a box in their hands. In the box was a letter that CMR wrote to the family. The end of the note said, "Oh yeah, James made the team." The two pulled out an official player jersey with his #23 and name on the back.

Aaron Murray shows that he can sling it with the best of them in the SEC. Its a great video that makes it very encouraging to think about next season. But what isn't encouraging is that Green and Durham (who make about more than half of the big plays in the video) aren't going to be here next year. You do see potential out of T. King, and the TE's though. Go Dawgs!

The performance from Michael Johnson and Geno Atkins takes the cake. Atkins looked quick, shedding blocks -- even double teams -- finishing with a team leading six tackles and a quarterback sack.

Geno Atkins getting after it in the NFL. Glad to see him move on and doing well.

"I'm just going through the process,"

That's the PR quote given by Greg when he was asked to confirm his application for the UGA AD job. Looks like one of top targets, as far as some of us at Dawgsports are concerned, has put himself out there and wants to come on board. I guess all that's left is for the AD search committee to do its due diligence, and make sure he is the right man for the job.

Dawg Sports Dawgography: Born into Bama Adopted into Athens

Origin

Like the title says I am not a native Georgian, nor have I ever lived in the state of Georgia. My mom has lived all over the south, and my dad has lived in Alabama his entire life. The entire side of his family are Alabama fans. I grew up in Mobile, AL around a bunch of nutty bama and tigger fans. So how in the world did a man living on the "other" side of the tracks like me end up in the Dawgnation family?

My saving grace was the wonderful influence of my Grand-daddy. (G.D. as I like to call him now) Thornwell "Trigger" Lee graduated around in the 1950’s from the University of Georgia Forestry School. We were pretty close with him (his last name is where i get my name) and as we grew up we did a lot with him. He is the sole reason I’m a Dawg today. Growing up we never were college football fans, heck I never played any little league football. We didn’t start following college football till around ’99-‘2000. That’s right, I don’t remember much but I do remember my first exposure to the Dawgs was lead by Quincy Carter and Jim Donnan. It began sitting with my G.D. and enjoying the red and black on the field. From then on I became very interested in uga football but I didn’t become a true fan till a few years later.

The Mark Effect

In 2001 the Mark Richt era started in Athens. And one of the first things I heard about him was his faith and how he became a Christian while coaching under Bobby Bowden. Being a Christian myself this gave me an instant bond to him as a coach and another big reason to root for the dawgs. Thankfully Richt and the Dawgs gave me much more than that. David Greene came along and brought his own Goliath with him named Pollack. From then on every year we watched and kept up with the Dawgs as much as we could. My family became dawg fans quickly under the Richt era, but I am proud to say that I am the family fanatic. And being a dawg fan has given me some great memories along the way.

I Hate Auburn

This almost could be a separate Dawgophraphy post by itself. But of course much like TKK I can’t stand Auburn. It stands from growing up in Mobile, Alabama during the good Tubberville years and they kept bama fans quiet (believe me the tide has turned ten fold now, and much harder to deal with) so it was Auburn fans who annoyed the crap out of me first. One of the Auburn games I remember was the 2005 come from behind loss which was as gut-wrenching as I can remember. I was on edge the whole game and the 4th quarter nearly had me put in a straight jacket. What made it worse was on the tiggers (not a misspelling) final td drive, my dad did something that I can’t believe till this day. On third down auburn made an incomplete pass to make it 4th down and 18. And my dad said "Yeah GAME OVER!!" Needless to say I lost it and yelled at him and was shamefully disrespectful, cause I knew it wasn’t over and I hate anybody making overconfident proclamations especially with the game in the balance. Well I don’t need to tell you what happened next but needless to say it was a long night. And my family still makes jokes about it whenever we watch games together.

My next most memorable Dawgfan moment was about 4 years ago when I got a chance to go to the Abuurn / Georgia game in 2006. It was at the barn and a friend of mine was a student there and got me a student ticket for 50 bones! I was stoked to go but nervous cause we hadn’t done that well up to that point that year, and they were top 5 at the time. Also it was my first road SEC game and I was going to be outnumbered. I though if I showed up in the student section wearing bright red, I’d put a target on my back for drunk fans to have fun with while their team was tearing us up on the field. So I’m ashamed to say, at this point if you will excuse the expression, my fandom balls hadn’t dropped yet, and I didn’t have wwcmrd?’s fan guide to help me yet. Can you pick out the UGA fan in that picture?

If you guessed the dweeb standing in the middle with the aww shucks look to him, yeah that’s me.Apparently everybody else could smell the "Dawg" on me because no one else was near me and it was crowded earlier in the game. I was sitting in the corner in the end zone and let me tell you it was an awesome experience. The game was so awesome and my friend had to leave, (plus it did rain off and on). It was one of the best fan experiences I’ve had so far.

You had me at the Georgia Hat

My last fan story is somewhat of a personal one that I’ll include at the risk of making this post too long, but here goes. While in college there was a girl I had noticed and taken a bit of interest in. The problem was she was a bit of a Tebow fan (and still is) so I wasn’t sure how it might work. Well one night she overheard that a bunch of us were going to be watching a movie in the patio room. After she got of work she went to her dad’s truck, took his Georgia hat  (Picture in comment section) and wore it walking into the patio room with us. Message received! I was like a deer stuck in headlights fellas, and after a year and half married her on July 3rd, 2009. Needless to say I love her to death, and I’m buying her uga gear all the time.

I’ve enjoyed writing this guys and I hope you all enjoy reading it. I’ll put a few biographical tid-bits in the comments (I wanted to keep this part strictly dawg related) and if any of you are interested feel free to hit me up on Twitter @Suthrn_Shepherd, or add me on facebook (just write a note letting me know you are from Dawgsports) Its been a pleasure getting to know you on here, you guys make me laugh, think, and there isn’t another place like it. With that I pass the baton to vineyarddawg. GATA and Go Dawgs!

Athlete Nick Marshall of Wilcox County (Rochelle, Ga.) has announced plans to play both football and basketball for Georgia in the Class of 2011.

The 6-foot-2, 185-pound prospect was also offered by Alabama, Florida State, Georgia Tech, Arkansas, Clemson, Tennessee and Vanderbilt. He was once a silent commitment to the Yellow Jackets.

A quarterback in high school, Marshall is rated three-stars and No. 31 nationally by ESPNU, but will play defensive back for the Bulldogs. He is considered No. 34 at shooting guard in basketball.

The Bulldogs now have 11 commitments.

Wow. Honestly i didn't really expect him to commit to the dawgs after LeMay committed but i guess that may not be why he's comming to the classic city canines. Marshall is also an explosive athlete on the Basketball court and WILL play for the hard-court dawgs as well.

Whether or not that's either depressing or exciting news to you depends on whether or not you are a half empty glass of uga or a one quarter glass full arkansas team. Either way the countdown has begun.

One of the best off-season bloggers Senator Blutarsky puts together the greatest Lexicon in history. It will soon be required reading in all English-Speech-Vocabulary classes in Georgia. It of course includes our own created classics such as "Evil Richt", Historical acronyms such as GATA, and more recent ones such as GPOOE. And ones that are so funny you just have to look them up yourself.

I know such a headline goes against the MO of this blog, its writers, and those who faithfully follow it, But when Dave Hale tweeted this...

"Huge news- Blair Walsh confirms an end to directional kickoffs."

i couldn't contain the excitement. I hope i have forgiveness for such destructive optimism, but it could not be contained. I'm sure TankerToad and the rest of the gang can bring us down to earth.

Team Speed Kills Vote in the Revolutionary Mumme Poll (brought to you by GTP)

I'm not sure how many of you know of or regularly check out Senator Blutarsky's dawg-blog Get The Picture, but if you haven't you are missing out on a lot. One of the big things that the great Senator has is his dream of pushing his innovative poll voting format, known as the Mumme Poll into the national spotlight. He conducted the first poll in the middle of the season last year with a fair amount of success. It's based on approval voting (which he explains in the previous link provided) and it only takes a minimal amount of time to put together.

So why am i blabbering on about this? Well because of the Senators recent announcement that the Mumme Poll is getting a technical overhaul which will make it easy to use, and a greater number of voters to participate. With the way it works, the more diversity there is and the greater number of voters, the more unbiased results you will recieve. At least as unbiased as we can in the SEC. This is all made possible by the great team over at 3rd Saturday in Blogtober. They will provide the web interface and poll engine to make such a project doable with large numbers in a shorter amount of time. I know the SEC has numbers like no other, and i would love to see this poll take off. Besides, i'm posting this on other teams SN sites, and you don't want them skewing the poll results, do you?

Therefore this is my pitch to you, my fellow SEC fans, in my best "Vote or Die" tribute, i ask you that if you consider yourself an somewhat objective (cause few of us truly are), passionate, college football fan, that can commit to doing this poll consistently week in and week out, Come and Vote, but don't make your Sports information Director fill it out.

Vote, or stay "Mumme"!

Dawg Sports The Dawgbone Returns on July 31st!

There is some exciting news in the Dawgosphere coming up as we will have the return of the awesome Dawgbone.net on July 31st!!! If there ever was a central hub for all things UGA it would be Dawgbone. He links to stories you would never be able to find concerning Dawg players current and former, and in every sport. If there's a news story smack talking the Dawgs he'll link to it, if one of our rivals are acting like Lane Kiffen w/o a filter he will hapily lead you to it. Not only that but he also offers great info and links to UGA recruits and commitments in a MaconDawg approved sans creepiness (this is one of the big ways i have missed the site) All in all he offers a great recourse to the Dawgosphere and I'm excited its coming back probably better than ever. GATA Dawgbone.net.

Mocking The Draft Cutler to be Traded, Stafford Impresses Lions

Well we were all sitting back waiting for the Cutler situation to inevitably deteriorate in the direction it was going. And now its basically a done deal that Cutler is gone, and McDaniels has bean revealed to be an incompetent idiot faster than any Belicheck assistant / wannabe head coach before him (at least that's my opinion). This grreatly alters many mock drafts and throws everything into a guessing game of who gets Cutler and what 1st round pick does Denver get for him.

In other news that has further impact on the draft and where Cutler is traded, is the reports of Matthew Stafford putting on an impressive performance during the Detroit Lions private workout.

So here's the question i pose to you. Where do you think Cutler ends up and do the Broncos go for Stafford as his replacement?

Poll
Where will Denver Trade Jay Cutler, and will they go for Stafford or look elsewhere? Explain your pick in the comments.
Culter goes to the Lions, and Denver drafts Stafford at #1.

Cutler goes to the San Francisco, Denver will take whichever QB falls to them.

Another scenario which i will explain in the comments.

I don't know whether to be proud that once again, someone recognizes the college football juggernaut that is the SEC, or to be insulted that he compared us to the Yankke media.

All that aside there are some interesting tidbits on the national impact of having SEC games viewed across the country every Saturday and how most NFL teams don't even get that. Most of the New York Media comparison comes from General Peachfuzz's latest tabloid exploits.

Dawg Sports Classy Farewell from Knowshon

If you haven't seen it yet, you should. It will make you proud to be a dawg fan, and is one of the classiest gestures from such a highly praised player i've seen in a long time.

You Knowshon Rockwell Moreno are a Damn Good Dawg, you show a passion and love for playing football for the Bulldogs that was truly inspiring, and we wish you the greatest success as you spin move your way through the NFL.

Dawg Sports Marcus Howard is loved in the pro's

I'm a huge College Football fan and only marginal NFL fan. But what always perks my interest in the NFL is how former bulldogs especially the new draftees, are doing in the NFL.

One in particular that i am very excited about is Marcus Howard who was taken in the 5th round (160 overall) by the Indianappolis Colts. He has gotten nothing but love from Stampede Blue (the SB Nation for the Colts) and its safe to say BigBlueShoe has a man crush on him. Just check out all the stuff written on him. It makes me very excited to see someone ,who wasn't known until his Senior year really, do so well leading up to his rookie year in the NFL.
