Spartalytical

I am an avid Michigan State Spartan fan, whose second love is the analytical and statistical side of sports. MSU men's basketball ranks first, then football, after which the rest blurs quickly. Living not terribly far from the school, I enjoy attending as many games each year as I can.

a fan of

Michigan St. Spartans NCAA Men's Football Division 1A Team

Michigan St. Spartans NCAA Men's Basketball Division 1 Team

Detroit Red Wings National Hockey League Team

Detroit Tigers Major League Baseball Team

Admittedly, a big part of me was hoping this was premature, but if Green wasn't going to win this award I'm genuinely happy for Hummel. He's been through a crapload of, well, crap, in his career, and this recognition is a mere drop in the bucket of what he deserves.

Congrats Robbie, and Purdue!

The Only Colors You Better Believe I'll Take It

For the life of me, I can't find it, but there was an article earlier this week on ESPN that described the machine that Calipari has rolling in Lexington, fueled by stellar one-and-done talent, with the sole objective of showcasing those talents to the NBA. Calipari is unapologetic about his philosophy, and it's hard to argue with the Roses and Evanses and DeCousinses and Walls raking in the big bucks now.

My Spartans came home early this year, and won't hear the cheers of Geaux Green, Geaux White in Nawlins. That after getting smacked in the mouth at the end of a tumultuous 2010-11 campaign. Sure, there were the two Final Four runs the previous two years, the improbable "hometown" Championship game appearance in 2009 and the overachieving string of wins in 2010 with Lucas in sweatpants on the bench, but these teams were the antitheses of juggernauts. There was no surefire NBA talent there, and those teams, as well as any from the past 10+ years had obvious weaknesses and more than their share of vulnerabilities, unlike this freakish Kentucky squad.

In spite of that lack of flash and firepower, am I eternally grateful for and proud of what we have here in East Lansing instead.

(Bumped. There's a fair bit of discussion of this in the Wisconsin recap as well.)

No Barlow or Byrd.

Much deserved, and the best choice without question.

Teams are quite similar, regarding personnel, talent, strengths, and weaknesses. The glaring difference at a high level is post-season experience. I'd like to think we tap into all of our strengths when something's actually on the line, as was done Friday night against Purdue. The team that showed up and farted through their games Thursday and Saturday nights will get stepped over. Should be an interesting week!

[Bump. If anyone's allowed to talk about EFFORT, it's this guy. -KJ]

An open letter to the 2010-11 team, speaking to their current struggles.

Maybe I'm reading too much into the comments highlighted in this article, but this just keeps sounding worse and worse.

Green said he thinks the Spartans simply "expect to win" when they take the floor. Izzo believes complacency, possibly the product of two straight Final Four runs, is a possible culprit.

The question is, how much failure does it take to eliminate complacency?

Joe's always got great insight but I tend to consider him a bit of a pessimist. If that's accurate, his comments are even more encouraging.

The majority of the post after the jump is just priceless. Enjoy!

Nice little read about Ringer's opportunity to strut his stuff a little more for a while.

Hopefully he's alright - Turner seems like a great kid on top of being a great player. Haven't found a clip of the fall yet.

I thought this was an interesting tid-bit. I don't think it's already been posted in KJ's set of links.

The Only Colors Men's non-conference basketball tix

Evidently these single-game tickets went on sale ahead of tomorrow night at midnight, and the only friggin' good home game, Gonzaga, is sold out.  What gives?  If I recall correctly, the conference tickets went on sale ahead of the midnight time posted well in advance, but better than a full day ahead?  Especially with such an underwhelming home slate, it's irritating that the only good game is now gone.  Thanks a whole lot.  !@#$.

So I'm at the Meridian Mall today with the wife and kids, and amazingly enough ended up hanging out with* and having lunch with** the Michigan State men's basketball team***!  How cool is that?!

I was hoping to find that he'd added a bit more than what the article says. It's the right direction though!
