Paul Daugherty of the Cincinnati Enquirer has an article that Spartans (fans, players, administration) should read in light of the recent issues with Spartan football players.

There has been a lot of discussion about what should be done with the football players involved in the Rather Hall incident. Many people saying "just kick them off the team." That is just what then Cincinnati Head Coach Mark Dantonio did with Marcus Gilyard. When Gilyard didn't go to class and didn't get the needed grades, Dantonio revoked his scholarship.

Gilyard has since redeemed himself and his having an outstanding year and will be a high NFL draft pick.

So should Dantonio kick all the involved players off the team as he has Winston and Jenrette and let them seek their own redemption? Should he stick by the players and help them along the path to redemption that Gilyard has traveled?

It is obvious to me that Dantonio has the strength to control his team, but the issues are deeper than that, you are looking at young men's lives. Young men who have admittedly made a mistake, but it must be considered: what is the best path to follow to make certain they become productive members of society.

I trust Dantonio to evaluate the players that he know as well as or better than anyone reading this and determine what is likely the best path for that young man. History shows that he can make the tough choices and Mardy Gilyard, with the help of what seems to be an outstanding family, is better for it.
