In recent weeks, despite the amount of evidence and stats brought forward, people still choose to blame our O-line for everything under the sun. Chris Johnson's early struggles, Matt Hasselbeck downward play, etc. Calling into question the coaching staff and if they were not up to the task of coaching their own Pro-positions. Finally the team is getting some overdue recognition. We've been riddled with injures throughout the O-line and players have stepped into place without missing much of a beat. Fernando Velasco has been a pleasant surprise and is currently rated as a Top 10 center in the league.

10. Tennessee Titans

PB = 10th, RB = 6th and PEN = 23rd

What a difference a few games can make. It’s no surprise that Chris Johnson has run for more yards with the way his line has been blocking. They got on the same page and boy does it show. A special mention in this regard for Fernando Velasco, who has really come on. The tackles remain stalwarts in protection.

So for anyone who is still complaining about our O-line and how horrible they are. Shut up. Please, just shut up. Stop with blanketed gripe you heard early in the season, watch the games, read a bit, and shut up.

Through 2012 so far, the Miami Dolphins front 7 has been consistently good, allowing just 94.2 rushing YPG (5th in NFL), 4 rushing TDs (6th in NFL), and also registering 24 sacks (12th in NFL). Despite their defensive backfield being poor at best, these stats grade the Dolphins front 7 out as #1 in the NFL. When you take that into consideration, the 177 rushing yards on 37 attempts (4.8YPC) that the Titans achieved this week looks all the more impressive. They were also able to protect against the pass rush. Cameron Wake managed to get to Jake Locker once in the game, to continue his consecutive games with a sack streak, but this was the only time in the whole 60 minutes that Locker was downed in the backfield by the Dolphins D. Combine these numbers with 10 rushing first down in the game, and only 3 carries for negative yards, and the Titans OL can certainly claim to have had a good day at the office. Even without the strength of the Miami D taken into account the Titans would have had the second highest non-adjusted OLR of the week (behind only the Cincinatti Bengals), so it is without question that I have to give the #1 crown to Tennessee this week.

In the comments to day, while searching for something irrelevant the interwebs graced me with a website called Advanced NFL Stats.com. I do not know how I have never come across it before, but I am glad I uncovered it.

During my travels, I learned much about various different sports stats from certain players (i.e. Derrick Morgan being second in the NFL in DE solo tackles with 15 and tied for 5th in TFL = BUST, DUH!). One stat that really stood out to me though was Offensive Line Grades and that is where we'll begin.

As MCM has drilled into our weak minds, our O-line is garbage, worse then garbage... it is !!GARBAGE!!, or is it? Currently our Offensive Line grades out at the 9th best overall O-line in the NFL. Surprised? Well we actually grade out very well in the passing game with 0.29 Pass-WPA (Win Probability Added) that gives us an overall pass blocking grade of 5th in the NFL. Seeing how as we have only given up 7 sacks (tied for 3rd) and only 15 QB hits (tied for 7th), it is a very deserving grade. So we still do some great work keeping the QB upright.

What really jumped out at me was our Run-WPA or O-line Running Success grade regardless of running back, so the pure form of O-line Success with the run. We currently grade out as the tied for 13th most successful team with the run, which I am sure most of you are surprised the number is that high... which is what caught my eye. So I started looking to the success rate of running backs at and/or around our grade in the running game:

Colts, tied with us in O-line running success at 13, finished with a 0.11 Run-WPA. Running behind their line is Donald Brown, who has 60 carries for 239 yards with a 4.0 ypc and 1 TD. Interesting, O-line has the same success against the run, but running back is significantly more successful running then ours.

Ok, how about Chicago and Matt Forte/Michael Bush. Chicago's line graded a shade above ours with 0.13 Run-WPA, yet Forte has ran 58 times with 270 yards, 4.7 ypc 1 TD - Bush was 58 times 206 yards 3.6 ypc 3 TDs... graded a little better, but far more success with their running backs.

Now to make sure this isn't a fluke I looked into Detroit's run grade, who graded out with a horrid grade of -0.71 Run-WPA. Their O-line is a mess against with the run anyway you put it (pretty decent with the pass, but Stafford is actually really good at getting the ball out on time with only 9 sacks and 18 QB hits), but Leshoure actually does a really great job with 39 attempts 126 yards with a 3.2 ypc and a TD. Add to that Kevin Smith who has 29 carries 115 yards with 4.0 ypc and a TD.

Now, all that being said, we have the Titans. We are 13th in O-line Run Success yet our star running back is the 52nd worst running back in the league. Averages 2.9 ypc (got a nice boost with a big game in Houston) off of 73 FREAKING CARRIES for 210 YARDS!!!! Zero TDs, at all... and some of the worst fumbles I have ever seen. Where is the problem here? I know the O-line is not ideal and some plays just do not work with them, but they are AT LEAST middle of the pack doing their job. I know the stats do not tell the whole story, this was more of just an informative post, but that being said:

Tennessee Titans' Chris Johnson's play examined by NFL analysts

"That swagger is not there," said former NFL running back Gerald Riggs, who rushed for 8,188 yards in 10 seasons and now hosts a talk show on 105.1 The Zone in Chattanooga. "Chris Johnson doesn’t look confident, and he doesn’t look very happy.

"He is not playing with very much passion, he is not playing with very much heart, and to me there is something internally that’s going on that’s causing that. Something’s just not right."

The three-time Pro Bowler managed only four yards on 11 carries against the Patriots last Sunday in a 34-13 defeat. Dating back to the final game of the 2010 season, he’s been held to less than 40 yards rushing in eight of his last 18 games. He failed to surpass 65 yards in 14 of those games.

He has only four 100-yard games in that stretch. During his 2,006-yard season in 2009, he had a dozen 100-yard games.

Titans Take: We sucked, hard last week.

Everyone but one person (deservingly) gets a drop in ratings. We had a terrible game on defense primarily and that is why the such large drop in ratings.... and well, CJ just was awful.

Why Kenny Britt doesn't solve CJ's issue

I understand the general thinking. A big-play wide receiver who can take the top off a defense dictates coverage and dissuades a defense from adding an eighth man to the front to stop the run.

But I just reviewed the coaches’ film of Johnson’s 11 runs against New England that produced 4 yards.

On just two of those plays did the Patriots have more than seven men in the box.

The first attempt against a front with an extra defender went for a 3-yard loss.

The second was on a first-and-goal from the New England 1-yard line, a down that screamed run in a situation where there wasn’t space to leave safeties deep even if the Patriots wanted to. That produced a 5-yard loss.

So against a stacked box, Johnson was two-for-minus-8. And against a box where an extra defender had no bearing on the play as Johnson got the ball and looked for room, he was nine-for-12.

"It’s a lot slower to me playing from the noseguard position," Marks said. "For some odd reason now, I feel so comfortable at the noseguard, I just feel mean and mad every time I go out. Because I know what I can do and how mean I can get."

Why meaner?

"Playing over the center, he’s usually a smaller guy, you’re right over the ball," he said. "You can always be quicker. You see the ball. I feel like I’ve got a real good get-off. Usually if you’re in the middle and you cause a lot of disruption, everything happens right there. I feel real comfortable there.

"If you’re a 3-technique, then usually your guard is a yard away from you, and half of the time they are two yards away from you when they can get away with it. So you’ve got a lot of distance to cover. I like getting off the ball and just attacking."

Michael Griffin will play near the line of scrimmage and collect tackles if that’s what the Tennessee Titans want him to do...

...To make that worth it, they need him where they’ve long talked about putting him, deep in the secondary playing the ball in the air.

As a more traditional free safety, he can be a good player. As a more traditional strong safety, he’s simply not the same caliber.

The Titans are deciding if they are better off with Griffin playing free and Jordan Babineaux playing strong, or with Robert Johnson playing free and Griffin playing strong.

In the second scenario, they’d be accommodating Johnson more than they’d be accommodating Griffin.

"He just makes plays," coach Mike Munchak said of Mariani’s play during offseason practices, which wrapped up last week. "In practice here, he’s one of the guys that when the ball went up, it seemed like he came down with it, or he found a way to get open. His routes were sharp, or he was getting out of his routes well. He was fun to watch. I think the quarterbacks had a lot of confidence in him."

"I walked on at Montana and I was a seventh-round guy, so there was always some kind of adversity," Mariani said. "Kendall is a heck of a football player. But I can’t control that. What I can control is taking advantage of my opportunities, trying to go out there and make plays. It’s fun listening, though, to the reports and the opinions that are out there.

"It’s fuel for me. It motivates me. But at the end of the day, I’m really focused on just getting better and really earning my spot and getting an opportunity to play wide receiver."

Johnson doesn’t need to be the league’s best back.

He needs to be productive in the Titans’ offensive scheme, gaining good yards when the box isn’t stacked to bring defenses forward so that Matt Hasselbeck or Jake Locker have increased chances to make big plays over the top to Kenny Britt, Nate Washington and Kendall Wright.

Let’s start there and leave the best-back conversation for later.

Titans Practice Report June 7th, 2012

Good news MCM, I found something to write about!
I'll be trying to follow the press conferences coming out of the practices as much as possible to give you the most up-to-date news I can give from 500,000+ miles away!

*Notes from HC Mike "Thor" Munchak June 07th 2012 Press Conference:

- Thor sounds like he's definitely stepped into the roll of being a HC. Last season, he may have appeared a little overwhelmed (very justified at the time) with everything that went on, or didn't go on. He sounds very assertive and excited that his plans are coming to full form.

- Thor says Kenny Britt is running great for his first time out there in quite a while, he expects him to "be back where he was" by sometime next week. I do not know how much of that is true, but if he is healing up this fast I am fairly certain he has strains of Wolverines DNA working for him right now... Says Britt should be working on 7v7 to rebuild his confidence sometime soon.

- On how Zach Brown looks so far; sounds excited with the versatility that Brown offers. Says he looks very fast. He is extremely happy with what he sees from him so far. Wants to use him as a pass rusher sometime in the future.

- On our return game; Thor says he's happy with what Mariani brings to the return game, but he wants to see what we have in the other players as well. As far as Wright returning kicks, it is going to come down to the amount of reps he's getting in games (I imagine they are going to want him as fresh as possible). Thor says "we'll put the best guy back there who is going to change the field, change the game... but it's yet to be seen"

- Spoon was excused from practice today for personal reasons

*From OC Chris "The Mad Bomber" Palmer;

- About DWills challenges now that we've drafted Wright; "You can never have enough good WRs" - Correct answer. "His role might change. Might do some kick offs, returns. As far as rotating 5-6 receivers in there, we plan on doing that" - Great news.

- CP has everything awesome to say about KWright so far. Says he's picking it up quickly and he's going to have the flexibility to play him in a few spots. It doesn't sound like they are concerned about him picking up the game in the least.

- Got a short glimpse of KB doing some running.

- On Ringers role; sounds like they are going to use him more in the passing game - great news because that is a strength of his and a "weakness" of CJ.

- Even CP throwin' some jokes Rusty's way; "There's sometimes when he knows the offense and there are sometimes when he doesn't know the offense. Like when he throws an interception, he doesn't know the offense"

- He is one of those dudes that seems like when he talks, you listen. All business, he is going to make this defense a very very good defense.

- Sounds extremely confident in McCourt and Verner. Addressed Campbell as the 3rd corner as of.... !

- Really stressing people to "get it done", he wants people to make plays when they need them.

- Thinks Morgan will get a chance to blossom this year because the pressure is no longer all on him to rush the passer.

Ron Burgundy and I have decided we'd like to start a mulit-post topic called The Master Debaters: Pratt vs. Ron. It will mainly be in the format of us interviewing each other on certain topics of our choosing (we may create a poll later on or take suggestions from the comments on future topics, but this is kind of our pilot to see if it works or not).

Basically the format will be, each of us will either support or oppose a side of the topic and we'll "interview" each other for your enjoyment. Then at the end of the post, we'll provide you with a "few things we think" could be football related, more often it will be completely random.

Tonight we are talking about Concussions in the NFL and how no body likes them...

SirBurgundy:

Ok Pratt, we all know you are rather anti-Goddell. The hot topic in the league right now with the death of Junior Seau is concussions. Over 2,000 former players are involved in lawsuits against the NFL. My question is...why are they just now getting to this?

The WisePratt:

Good evening Mr Burgundy;

((SideSide Note: Actually I really don't mind Goodell, I think he's trying to make the league safer for everyone. I just wish his punishments were the same across the board, but I'll play the part for sake of argument))

I believe the problem has always been there, just not talked about. As Seau said in previous interviews, players rarely brought up concussions or other problems for fear of ridicule from other players and/or benching. This is the model of football the NFL built, your job is always at risk; every year, every camp, every play, could be your last time you step on a professional football field.

I don't believe you can have football be a safe sport, but still ask for big hits. Players need to understand what they are getting involved in before they step on the field.

San Diego's King:

Come on now, Pratt, don't you think every single one of these guys know what they're getting into? Especially once they have reached the NFL level, they have likely been playing the sport since middle school and had plenty of time to realize, "I'm going to be hit hard, which could lead to serious injury and other health problems." I honestly believe a lot of this recent concussion hysteria has been fueled by the media latching onto the shocking death of a recent NFL great. Would we be talking about all of this if it was another player from the 50s/60s era of the league? (This is not to look down upon that era; if anything, they're the ones who need the most help today financially, but I don't think the concussion issue would be as big as it is right now if it wasn't for Seau's death.)

Pratt The Infallible:

No, I honestly do not think these kids fully understand what they are getting into at a young age. They are envision riches and stardom at a very young age; we all know majority of kids already think they are invincible and are not worrying about arthritis in their knees, let alone mental/physical problems from past concussions. It's not that I disagree with Goodell's stance on making the league safer, but it is not as if this is new to the NFL. He needs to be promoting safety for the right reasons, not trying to warp the game into something it is not *a "safe" game*. The league has PLENTY of money to start researching and developing the safest equipment for the sport, why don't they invest more time in pursuing that avenue instead of trying to water down the game? Big hits, dangerous play will ALWAYS happen when you are dangling a $50 million dollar carrot infront of people.

Ron, on the jazz flute:

Didn't they just make hip and thigh pads mandatory? I think the league is taking steps, but I have to agree with you that at some point the NFL has to fully commit to making the game safer. Right now it seems like the league is reactionary rather than proactive in reaching effective solutions that can make this game safer while still providing the entertainment value fans love. What is it going to take for long-term solutions to be instituted? I don't want to see the NFL become flag football, but you can make equipment better. I think a related issue to this is injury reports and injuries in general and the competitive nature of teams/players in wanting to be on the field. How many guys do you think have had concussions and gone right back on the field a few plays later? That competitive drive isn't going to go away, coaches and players rely on winning and performing to keep their jobs, but if the league is going to have these rules on reporting injuries and protocols in place, enforce them more strictly if you really want to see changes in how player health is managed.

Which goes into my biggest gripe with Goodell; there needs to consistency with his penalties/fines, if someone continues to disregard the rules and becomes a repeat offender, he gets banned from the league. Straight up.

Change the rules to make it safer, but everyone needs to follow the code; that includes Goodell himself.

Ron with the wisdom:

That's the privilege of being judge, jury and executioner. We could have an entirely separate conversation on Goodell and what his run at the top has done for the league, but as it pertains to concussions and safety, I don't think it'd necessarily be a bad thing if the league became more Orwellian in that area and got more oversight of injury reports and recovery in general. Late last year the league announced that "certified independent athletic trainers" would be present at games to help evaluate injured players and notify team medical staffs of things they might not necessarily catch in the heat of the moment. While this might be a small step in the right direction, it's not enough. I think the next step is league-employed doctors overseeing injuries and getting final say on whether a player can return. Unfortunately I think it may end up taking a major in-game injury (or reinjury for that matter) or tragic incident like Seau to get serious, sweeping changes going.. Teams fudge their reports all the time, we all know it, and teams are interested in winning, meaning player health/safety may not be priority one in the middle of a close game.

Commander Pratt:

Player health/safety in the heat of a game is not a priority - we can both agree on that.

Now! For some things we think right this second;

Ron - Do NOT ever get food from a street vendor in Nashville (I never have, just walked by them and the thought of it disturbed me). Food trucks are a different story, however.

Pratt - Diablo 3 is incredible... if you can ever get it to actually work on your computer.

NFL Draft Drinking Game

I will be in Vegas this weekend for one of my best friends bachelor party/Draft weekend madness and we've developed a drinking game to help make the experience X50 times better!

Here are the rules;

Game Rules:

Drink once:

1. each time Mel Kiper Jr. says one of his trademark phrases: “value pick,” “need pick,” “best available” and “that’s a reach.”

2. every time Kiper’s hair is referenced by another ESPN analyst.

3. every time an ESPN personality compliments a player’s suit.

4. each time one of the following is mentioned: Ryan Leaf, JaMarcus Russell, Matt Millen, Akili Smith, Ki-Jana Carter, Brian Bosworth, Tim Couch or Tim Tebow.

5. each time an analyst uses one of the following buzzwords or phrases to describe a player:

“upside”
“motor” (as in “high motor” or “good-motor”)
“he’s raw”
“intangibles”
“body control”
“physical tackler”
“battle-tested”
“proven winner”
“arm length”
“gets stuck on blocks”
“release point”
“game speed”
“low center of gravity”
“Wonderlic test”

6. every time Kiper and Todd McShay interrupt one another (this could get dangerous).

7. everytime your favorite team has a draft pick.

Bonus: Your whole group drinks for the number of seconds corresponding to each pick of the draft (e.g., drink 15 seconds for the 15th pick).

6. for every wide receiver drafted — but only the biggest diva in the room drinks twice. This is known as the “Diva Rule.” (You should designate this person in advance; of course he or she will object, because that person is a diva.) I choose Pratt!

1. if the Minnesota Vikings fail to get their pick in on time.

2. if Ben Roethlisberger is busted for another sexual offense during the broadcast — but under no circumstances may you vomit on an 11-year-old girl.

"If I had to make the choice this year like I did last year, I still would choose Tennessee,'' Hasselbeck said. "I like what we have going here. I really like the offensive line, the skill guys are very talented. I like the coaching staff. I like the division that we're in.

Colts have gone into Dumpster-Fire Mode

In addition to Andrew Luck taking over at quarterback and Peyton Manning playing elsewhere, the Colts will have a whole lot of holes to fill with the news that they have released Dallas Clark, Joseph Addai and Melvin Bullitt.

That report came from Mike Chappell of the Indianapolis Star, just moments after the report that longtime defensive captain Gary Brackett had been cut. Also coming out today was news that the Colts would like to trade Dwight Freeney.

Just as there’s been talk that Reggie Wayne and Manning could be a package deal, speculation can immediately commence that Clark or Addai could be targets of whatever team signs Manning.

UPDATE: Quarterback Curtis Painter was also released. "These players all made tremendous contributions to the organization and will forever be members of the Colts family," owner Jim Irsay said in a team statement. "It’s always difficult to make these decisions which the nature of the salary cap requires. Their legacies with the Colts will be forever remembered by the organization, fans and Indianapolis community. We wish them all the best in their future endeavors."
