Chargers make three moves

+

First, the Chargers placed cornerback Brandon Hughes on "Reserve – Injured." Hughes, the team’s fifth-round pick in this year’s draft, suffered a knee injury in Saturday’s preseason game at Atlanta. Wide receiver Demetrius Byrd, the team’s seventh-round draft pick who signed a four-year deal Monday, will spend the entire year on "Reserve – Non Football Injury." Byrd continues to recover from injuries suffered in an automobile accident suffered a week prior to the draft. And finally, the Chargers released linebacker Anthony Felder, an undrafted free agent from California-Berkeley.

Chargers' draft move motivates Merriman

+

Canepa, SDUT About drafting Larry English: But he does admit that, this past April, when General Manager A.J. Smith used the team's first-round selection on Larry English, a pass-rushing linebacker out of Northern Illinois, the man who calls himself "Lights Out" blew a fuse. "I was (ticked) off," he was saying Friday between training camp workouts About Merriman's extracurriculars: So Merriman does a TV show for Fox Sports Net in his off time. The front office doesn't like it. Why? Is golfing better? "It's 45 minutes a week!" Merriman says. "Forty-five minutes a week!"

Kevin Acee, UT It's as if Antonio Cromartie is trying to erase 2008 with sheer determination and sweat. That he hopes to wipe clean the disappointing games, the hip fracture and the off-the-field complications that come with having seven children. Now, the Charger says he is fine-tuned, fit and ready to again be an elite cornerback. REALLY interesting article about Cromartie and what he faced last year and how he is trying to set himself up to overcome it this year.
