Steve @ MLB Fantasy Prospects

Sep 08, 2009 Jun 14, 2010 10 33

MLB Fantasy Prospects made its sparkling debut in late summer 2009. Our mission is to find the prospects that will bring home fantasy baseball titles and bragging rights in your competitive leagues. We examine the prospect world through fantasy glasses with an emphasis on deep statistical analysis, detailed scouting reports, and unique prospect access. In a nutshell, with a splash of attitude and humor, we rip apart the numbers, break down the tape, and interview the impact prospects.

Fake Teams FANTASY PRESS PASS: Scouting Aroldis Chapman (SP, Cincinnati Reds)

It’s time for another edition of “Fantasy Press Pass.” In the debut installment, Mike Feifel (MLBFP Staff Writer/Lead Photographer) flashed his credentials to take you on the field and in the clubhouse to get the scoop on Stephen Strasburg.

In this edition, “Mad Mike” gets up close and personal with the second-most talked about pitching prospect in baseball – Aroldis Chapman. The Cuban sensation visited Mike’s home park (Coca-Cola Park in Allentown, PA) to take the mound against the Lehigh Valley IronPigs. As you can see, at MLBFP, we don’t settle for run-of-the-mill scouting reports. We send our writers to the parks and dissect the elite.

Fake Teams FANTASY PRESS PASS: Scouting Stephen Strasburg (SP, Washington Nationals)

Mike Feifel, MLBFP Staff Writer/Lead Photographer, traveled to Reading, PA last week to get a first-hand look at Stephen Strasburg. Here’s some sweet photos, scouting observations, and gameday quotes from his field trip. Needless to say, “Mad Mike” came away quite impressed.

Scouting Observations

This start was important for the Nationals’ stud prospect. He had faced the Phillies Double-A team the week before and simply owned them – striking out six in five innings of one-hit baseball. How would Strasburg perform against a solid lineup that was getting a second look at him? That was the topic at issue among the press during batting practice.

Fake Teams PROSPECT PENDULUM: Mike Stanton Powering Up

by Ben Crasley, Staff Writer - MLB Fantasy Prospects

In last week’s edition of Prospect Pendulum, I wrote that Lars Anderson was rising and that owners of Josh Reddick should abandon ship. This past week has seen Anderson promoted to Triple-A and Reddick demoted from the big league squad. I’m not bragging, I’m just saying.

This week, I’m taking a fresh look at some of the biggest names in the prospect world and adjusting their ETAs, but not necessarily in the direction you want to see. In addition, it’s time to turn the spotlight on one of my lesser-known, fantasy favorites in the low minors.

On the Upswing

Mike Stanton (OF, Florida Marlins)

Stanton has been the talk of the minor league world, destroying Double-A pitching to the tune of 6 HR, 5 2B, and 6 BB while striking out just five times over the past seven days. Stanton’s monster week raised his season totals to .347-10-23 with a ridiculous .827 slugging percentage, cementing his status as the best power-hitting prospect in all of baseball. Still only 20 years-old, the Marlins will certainly wait to promote Stanton until late May, safely delaying his arbitration clock. Florida may even wait to call him up until midseason, to give him some more development time, as they did with Miguel Cabrera in 2003. Still, Stanton reaching the majors in 2010 is beginning to look more like a “when” than an “if,” and his fantasy stock is soaring higher than it was before the season. He will be long gone in dynasty leagues, and isn’t worth a pick-up in redraft leagues yet, but come late June, those in NL-Only leagues or deep mixed leagues would do well to spend a roster spot on him. Stanton’s power is so ridiculous that he may only need 300 at bats to hit 20 homers this season. If he improves his contact rates, look out!

Fake Teams Prospect Pendulum: Jamie Garcia, Junichi Tazawa and Fernando Martinez

by Ben Carsley, Staff WriterMLB Fantasy Prospects

My second installment of Prospect Pendulum takes a look at some spring training jobs that were won and lost last week, as well as some talented young players headed back to the minors. The biggest winners in the prospect world this week were the Cardinals, who are infusing their roster with some youth, while the Red Sox were the biggest losers, losing their second Top 10 prospect to injury this month.

Head on over to MLB Fantasy Prospects and check out who all I'm talking about....

Fake Teams Prospect Pendulum: Jason Heyward And Madison Bumgarner Headed In Opposite Directions

by Ben Carsley, Staff Writer, MLB Fantasy Prospects

The "Prospect Pendulum" will be a new, weekly feature here at MLB Fantasy Prospects where I examine the fantasy stock of prospects throughout the minors. New opportunities for playing time, hot streaks, or steady improvement all warrant positive reviews; while injuries, slumps, or marked decline put players at risk of receiving negative analysis. Think of the Prospect Pendulum as the ultimate, real-time guide to finding sleeper keepers and kiddies to unload.

My first installment of this series features two of the games best prospects - Jason Heyward and Madison Bumgarner - headed in opposite directions.

Fake Teams The Next Wave: Top 12 Fantasy Prospects in the 2010 MLB Draft

By Ben Carsley, Staff Writer, MLB Fantasy Prospects

With the draft still two months away, and if I were forced to re-rank these players in two weeks, I would likely produce a vastly different list. That being said, based on my own impressions, and after tireless analysis of scouting reports, mock drafts, and video, here’s a succinct list of the Top 12 Fantasy Prospects for the 2010 Draft. MLBFP will be covering the upcoming draft right up until draft day – this should be your first stop for the fantasy slant on the new crop of prospects.

1) Bryce Harper, C, Community College of Southern Nevada

There’s not much to write about Harper that hasn’t already been written. Since Tom Verducci’s article pronounced him as "Baseball’s LeBron," Harper has dealt with even more hype than Stephen Strasburg. Armed with a Vladimir Guerrero-esque arm, Hanley Ramirez-esque bat speed, and more raw power than Ryan Howard, Harper has all the raw tools to become a perennial All Star. Playing as a 17-year-old in Junior College, Harper has batted .420-8-27, with a .514 OBP and 6 SBs, in 27 games. Harper unquestionably has the highest upside of any player in the 2010 draft, and one could argue the highest upside of any prep player since Justin Upton, or maybe even Alex Rodriguez. He’s still only 17, and even the most optimistic projection can’t have him seeing significant time until 2012 at the earliest. Despite his youth and inexperience, any player who could potentially provide Ryan Braun-type numbers at the catcher position needs to be monitored by all fantasy players. Harper is the current favorite to go first in the 2010 draft.

Fake Teams MLBFP's Top 25 Fantasy Keepers Under 25-Years-Old

What do Matt Kemp, Tim Lincecum, and Troy Tulowitzki have in common? None of them qualify for this list of the Top 25 best fantasy cogs under the age of 25.

Using the cut-off date of Opening Day 2010 as our guide, we poured over every roster and checked the age of every fantasy relevant player on every MLB team. After excluding everyone with a DOB that ends in 84 or later, here are the results. MLB Fantasy Prospects presents to you a keeper-league owner’s best friend: The Top 25 Under 25.
