ATLANTA (AP) -- Atlanta Thrashers goalie Ondrej Pavelec collapsed to the ice in the early minutes of the season-opening game against the Washington Capitals.

There was a whistle at the opposite end of the ice when the 23-year-old Pavelec suddenly fell over backward with no one around. His teammates rushed to his aid and immediately called for doctors and a stretcher to be brought to the ice.

Medical personnel worked over him for about 10 minutes before he was wheeled off the ice. There was no immediate word on his condition or what caused him to collapse.

Pavelec collapsed just 2:25 into the game.

Blueshirt Banter Really great article on Pat Dapuzzo's career ending injury.

Article about Pat Dapuzzo's injury during the Feb. 9th 2008 Rangers vs Flyers game.

I wasn't aware of the extent of Pat's injuries and thought it was a really good read.  The link has the video of the accident as well as the brawl while he was injured.  More than just a mere cut to the face, Pat had numerous fractures to his face, and has subsequently gone through numerous surgeries.

There were 10 fractures in my face. My right cheekbone was shattered. Between the accident and all the surgeries I've had, I lost all of my teeth. I lost my sense of smell. I developed sleep apnea. I dealt with terrible earaches caused by bone fragments in my right ear.

I still suffer from post-concussion syndrome. There were times in the first year after the accident when I couldn't get out of bed for weeks.

Wishing Pat all the best in his continued recovery.
