Canis Hoopus Marko's Journey

On August 12, 2005, the Minnesota Timberwolves traded Sam Cassel and a future 1st round pick to the Los Angeles Clippers for Marko Jaric.

On June 26, 2008, the Minnesota Timberwolves traded Marko Jaric, Greg Buckner, O.J. Mayo, and Antoine Walker to the Memphis Grizzlies for Kevin Love, Brian Cardinal, Jason Collins, and Mike Miller.

Will Marko Jaric be involved in the best and worst trades in Timberwolves history? Will Our Beloved Puppies trade Sam Cassell and Anthony Davis for Marko Jaric (and Kevin Love)?

Are these the best and worst trades in franchise history? Doesn't the fact that Marko helped bring about Kevin Love and Ricky Rubio (via Mike Miller) make it all worthwhile?

FWIW, I think the Marko trade has significantly downgraded from Clippergeddon to meh territory. Love and Rubio have likely made even the loss of Anthony Davis palatable. It's been a rough and bumpy road, but no matter what happens tonight, the Wolves will have likely made peace with Marko.

Taylor told The Associated Press on Friday that he is looking to add a minority partner who could buy a part of the team that includes an option to buy Taylor out after observing the day-to-day operations of running a professional sports team.

Taylor said he has yet to speak to any specific candidates, but made it clear that one of the biggest priorities for him will be a commitment to keeping the Timberwolves in Minnesota.

"I could find somebody to buy the team. That's not my problem," Taylor said at his office at Taylor Corp., a privately held printing and marketing giant. "I have to find someone that's committed to here. It's always best if it would be a Minnesotan. I'm telling you I don't know that's the way it's going to work out. I haven't had a lot of Minnesotans step up."

There has long been speculation about who would take over for Taylor, who saved the Wolves from moving to New Orleans when he purchased the team in 1994. Now, Taylor thinks the timing is right to open up the search.

Canis Hoopus And another year ends...(Denver game thread)...

Canis Hoopus began sometime back during the 2006/07 season and here we are at yet another season closer for a losing team. This will be our first year without the Mark Madsen Three Point Memorial and Remonstrance. Hopefully, it will bring better luck for next season.

Onward and upward.

Second Team - Ricky Rubio, Minnesota
Rubio's playmaking drew more plaudits during his rookie season, but he was most valuable to the Timberwolves on the defensive end of the floor. Minnesota allowed 7.0 fewer points per 100 possessions with Rubio on the floor, per BasketballValue.com. Rubio is skilled at playing the passing lanes and ranked third in the league in steal rate. His size was also a major asset against smaller players. When Rubio was beaten, he was still a threat to alter a shot from behind.

Basketball Prospectus names Ricky Rubio as the 2nd team Every Play Counts All Defensive PG.

Canis Hoopus Hooray! (?)

April 24, 2012; Salt Lake City, UT, USA; Former Timberwolf center Al Jefferson (25) is congratulated by Utah teammates and coaches after winning the Wolves the pick he was traded for. The Jazz defeated the Suns 100-88 to clinch a spot in the playoffs and David Kahn is still looking for center help. Mandatory Credit: Russ Isabella-US PRESSWIRE

On July 13, 2010 David Kahn sent Al Jefferson to the Utah Jazz for two protected 2011 first round picks and Kosta Koufos.

The first of these protected picks was the #20 selection in last year's draft. This pick was used on Donatas Motiejunas, who was then traded, along with Jonny Flynn, to the Houston Rockets for Nikola Mirotic, Chandler Parsons and a 2013 protected (lotto protected until 2016, then the pick turns to cash) first-round pick. Mirotic (the now two-time EuroLeague Rising Star winner) was then moved to the Chicago Bulls for Norris Cole and Malcolm Lee. Chandler Parsons was then traded back to Houston for a conditional 2nd round pick.

The second of these protected picks was lottery protected. In order for it to be conveyed to Our Beloved Puppies, the Utah Jazz had to make the playoffs.

Kosta Koufos was traded for a 2nd round pick.

In short, at this date, Al Jefferson was traded so that Al Jefferson could win the Wolves their pick.

The much longer version is that Al Jefferson, the starting center on the playoff-bound Utah Jazz, was traded for Malcolm Lee, a 1st round pick from a declining team (Houston) that will turn to cash in 2016, and a 2nd round pick.

To be perfectly honest, the biggest mistake/stupid thing I have ever done while maintaining this site was to support the idea that Big Al should be traded. Lesson learned: don't trade above average players. However, my stupidity led to some bad posts and me being wrong about the quality of a piece of entertainment. The guy running the team...not so much.

So, here's hoping that Team Adelman can have enough influence behind the scenes to make use of one of the last rebuilding assets this franchise has access to. In past drafts guys like Ty Lawson or Luke Babbitt (or EuroLeague Rising Stars) have been available with picks just like the one the Wolves will get to use. We all know how that worked out with the POBO. There will be a player in this draft in the 16-30 range and beyond that will be a functional NBA rotation player. The Wolves absolutely need to find that guy. They have a tough assignment. It's their toughest draft assignment to date. They can't get another C, D, or F. They need to ace it.

Until later.

Canis Hoopus Top Grooming Moment in Minnesota Timberwolves History: The Concussion Stache

Scaled_php_medium_medium

This is a sponsored post. --SnP

It was short lived (less than 48 hours) and likely destroyed by a tweet from his sister, but for one shining (and possibly likely concussed) moment, Kevin Love leaped to the top of the franchise's all-time grooming list.

The competition was fierce. Both Pek and Rubio rock amazing Euro-beards and Jimmy Rodgers' fine white perm gets some love for the coaching division.

However, in the end, a mustachioed superstar in an actual salon earns the spot as the top grooming moment in Wolves history.

Did I miss anyone? Can he be knocked from the top?

Wolves owner Glen Taylor said the team has already informed or is informing president of basketball operations David Kahn that it has picked up Kahn's option for next season. That means Kahn will be back for his fourth season with the club. Kahn signed a three-year deal in May 2009 that included two more years of team options, each separate.

Today's Strib game recap buries the lead.

REMIX!!!

As if the April 4th game against Golden State where the Wolves went ahead by 20+ only to find themselves on the working end of a fully loaded Charles Jenkins wasn't enough, tonight they upped the ante by losing to the same depleted Warriors squad on the 3rd night of a back-to-back-to-back.

Keep in mind that this Warriors team owes a top-seven protected pick to the Utah Jazz and that this win gave them the 8th worst record in the league. They have shut down all of their meaningful players and they still have managed to knock off Our Beloved Puppies two times in the last month.

Those fans who made their way to 600 First Avenue in person were treated to one of the biggest D-League efforts in recent memory. Horrible uninspired jump shooting "action"? Check. A complete inability to get the best player on the court (Nikola Pekovic) more than 13 shots (although, to be completely fair, it wasn't his best game)? Check. Early-in-the-shot-clock 3 pointers? Check. A Wes Johnson disappearing act? Check and check.

Speaking of Wes, after managing a quick 5 points in the opening quarter (including a kind-of-sort-of drive to the basket that drew a foul) he went into zero mode. He now has 6 games on the season with 0 rebounds, 47 with no free throw attempts, 8 with no points, 26 with no assists, 37 with no steals, and 32 with no blocks.

In the game thread OR-7 asked how many players from tonight's box score will be on the team at the start of next season. How many will be? How many should?

Heading into the off season I hope that the obvious roster deficiencies and imbalances are not glossed over or written off with talk about injuries. It's time to bring in a professional GM to clean things up.

Ugh. 1 more to go.

UPDATE: JJ Barea unloads on the team in the locker room:

Barea: "We got problems here. We got a lot of guys that don't care. ... We're just going to keep Ls til we get players here that care."

Barea says #TWolves will keep losing "until we get players that care about winning, care about the team, care about the fans."

Barea expects big changes: "That's up to mgmt. We just don't care. We just come in after a game like nothing happened."

Canis Hoopus Almost there: Golden State game thread

Did you know that Golden State owes Utah a top-7 protected pick? Did you also know that there are 9 teams with 23 or fewer victories and Golden State is one of the 5 sitting at 21, 22, or 23 wins?

They reallllllllllllly need to lose. Did you know their final game is against the San Antonio Spurs? It is the last tilt of the regular season, a 10:30 eastern start on TNT. It could be the league's most embarrassing game since the Madsen debacle. It is entirely possible that Pop will sit his guys and that...well, it could be glorious.

NEW YORK, NY - NOVEMBER 15: Austin Rivers #0 of the Duke Blue Devils drives the ball against Branden Dawson #22 of the Michigan State Spartans during the 2011 State Farm Champions Classic at Madison Square Garden on November 15, 2011 in New York City. Chances are, he didn't score on this drive. (Photo by Patrick McDermott/Getty Images)

If you head on over to Draft Express you will see that they currently have Austin Rivers going with the 16th pick, right where the Wolves could end up should Utah sneak its way into the playoffs.

The possibility of the Wolves getting the Utah pick and using it on Austin Rivers has gained mention on everything from In the Zone to Paul Allen to Real GM and pretty much every Wolves-mentioning entity in between. In an entirely unscientific canvasing of these mentions, it appears that this possibility is viewed as something of a positive.

Below the fold I'll tell you why that's insane.

Eight months after disclosing her diagnosis of early-onset Alzheimer’s disease, Pat Summitt was poised Wednesday to announce that she will step aside as the Tennessee women’s basketball coach, making way for longtime assistant Holly Warlick take over the Lady Vols.

The university will make the news official via a press release Wednesday afternoon after Summitt meets with her players in Knoxville, Tenn., to inform them in private. A news conference is expected to follow Thursday.

Summitt, who has won more college basketball game than any man or woman in the sport (1,098), is not retiring but will remain part of Tennessee’s staff, assuming the title "head coach emeritus," which will give her latitude and flexibility to do as much mentoring with players as her health allows.

Was it a victimless crime? By securing a top-10 draft position, the Timberwolves prevented the Clippers from receiving the draft pick that became 2007 Rookie of the Year Brandon Roy (a future three-time All-Star whom the Wolves traded to Portland on draft night). And the Memphis win put the unfortunate Grizzlies (who also might have been motivated to lose the game) into a more difficult playoff bracket -- the Grizzlies started the postseason on the road and were swept by Dallas in the first round rather than having home-court advantage over a struggling Denver Nuggets team (which lost its first-round series to the Clippers).

On the flip side, the draft pick that did not go to the Clippers in 2006 eventually became the pick that allowed L.A. to acquire Chris Paul from New Orleans in 2011 -- and the Timberwolves will not get to use their own lottery pick this season, in part because of that infamous night in 2006.

True Hoop continues its series on (the problem of?) tanking with a little blurb about the Madsen game and its continuing reverberations. The thrown game not only led to Foye > Roy, but also the team failing to hand over its 1st round pick to the Clips before 2012.
