I truly wonder if this is a valid concern or just more postseason talk.

Arrowhead Pride Why not at Arrowhead?

With my one year anniversary to this site coming up, I thought that I'd finally take my lumps and put out my first real post.  I'm humbled by the overall knowledge that people here have, so I've been reluctant up to this point to post.  I thought that this might be a fun topic so here's something that I'd like to ask of you that I've wondered about (or wished about) for years.

Why not host a Superbowl in Arrowhead?

I for one, have always wondered why it seems that the same places seem to be selected year after year to host the Superbowl.  After some research, I discovered that there is some pretty specific criteria that a city must meet in order to make a bid or get the nod anyway.  Well, I also found that last year's Superbowl in Tampa did not meet the number of hotel rooms required within an hour of the stadium, in fact they fell significantly short of that number.  This leads me to believe that the politics that come into play may have more to do with it than the actual defined criteria.

The requirements that the city/stadium must meet are shown below:

  • The city has to host an NFL team
  • The stadium must have at least 70,000 seats
  • The avg temp in Jan must be at least 50 degrees, or the stadium must be domed
  • There must be at least 24,500 hotel rooms within an hour of the stadium

Criteria #1 - Yes, we have the Chiefs

Criteria #2 - Yes, our seating capacity is 79,451

Criteria #3 - Uh, well no, the average temp is not 50 degrees or domed, but come on... this is football, not golf or tennis.  Let's get back to basics!

Criteria #4 - Well, if we include all of Eastern Kansas, and Southern Iowa (It's all within a reasonable drive) come on, it's the Superbowl!

Extra Credit - We have the best fans and BBQ in the country, it'd be one hell of a party and we deserve a shot!

I guess the point that I'm trying to make is that we're proud of our Chiefs, our Arrowhead Stadium, and our place in NFL history, beginning with the first Superbowl.
