Lucroy, and Pitching with RISP
Jonathon Lucroy’s defense has been a somewhat hot topic in recent months, mostly centered around Randy Wolf’s desire to work with somebody, anybody else. Last night against the Yankees, when there was a man on 2nd base (thus needing to disguise the pitch call), it was very noticeable how long it took Lucroy to work through the signs and seemed to prevent Greinke from getting into any sort of rhythm.
I was curious, so pulled this year’s numbers of Brewer pitchers performance with runners in scoring position (thus the need to do the complex signs) and with no one on base.
***Quick disclaimer - I know these are crude stats and very small samples, this is more just a conversation starter as I was wondering if other people are thinking the same thing. I know its something I'll be keeping an eye on the rest of the year.
- Naveson: .890 OPS against with RISP, .608 with bases empty
- Greinke: 1.058 RISP, .744 bases empty
- Marcum: .669 RISP, .567 bases empty
- Gallardo: .668 RISP, .784 bases empty
- Loe: .940 RISP, .563 bases empty
- Estrada: 1.028 RISP, .614 bases empty
- Axford: .552 RISP, .568 bases empty
For comparison:
- Randy Wolf (this year): .564 RISP, .710 bases empty
- Greinke career: .723 RISP, .724 bases empty
- Marcum career: .756 RISP, .680 bases empty
As I mentioned, these are full season numbers and with the time Lucroy missed and off days, probably lots of flaws and stuff that can be explained. However, I found it pretty interesting that besides Gallardo and Axford, all pitchers are getting hit harder with guys in scoring position, oftentimes significantly so.
Opening Day Roll Call
Let's get all the negatives out of the way. Opening Day is indeed amatuer hour, the New Years Eve of baseball games. It brings out all kinds of idiots who still think JJ Hardy is on the team and have no idea who they are playing. Overpriced tickets and 2-1 odds you get thrown up on.
I don't care about that. Its the first opportunity to see the team at home, there is rumored to be up to 20 Packer players throwing out the first pitch (rumor is Rubie Q is going just to boo James Jones), and dammit - I have fun seeing friends I haven't seen in a while and hanging out in a cold parking lot for 3 hours drinking beer and blowing off work.
A look back at Brewer prospects - 2004 and 2005
Had a Amazon gift card from Christmas to use and picked up a couple of older John Sickels prospect books. Thought it was interesting to see how the current Brewer team looked when they were in the minors.
Also worth noting is Jeremey Reed shows up as the #10 hitting prospect in 2004.
Brewers non-tender Coffey and Inglett
I am assuming every other player in question is being tendered a contract.
Joe Cowley - Brewers hire Ron Roenicke
Sources are saying that Brewers have hired Ron Roenicke
The timing is right on this, though this would be the 3rd manager "sources" have linked to the Brewers.
New Basketball assistant hired
Bo has brought on Lamont Paris to replace Howard Moore. The big rumor was Freddie Owens, but Bo went outside the box with this one. Don't know a lot about Paris - he has a lot of experience as an assistant, but from what I can tell, hasn't done any recruiting in the Chicago area where Moore specialized. Paris has a strong Ohio background, so you have to wonder if that become more of a focus in terms of recruiting going forward or if Paris will focus on the Chicago area like Moore.

Draft Pick Signings
With the August 16th signing deadline for draft picks fast approaching, I thought I'd use this space to post updates on signings as they come in.
Today's news was the signing of 7th round pick Joel Pierce, who earlier this week was rumored to be honoring his commitment to the Chanticleer's of Costal Carolina.
That leaves the following picks unsigned (Thanks to Brewerfan for the list):
1st Round - Dylan Covey, RHP, Maranatha HS (CA)
13th Round - Michael White, RHP, Walters State CC (TN)
15th Round - Chris Bates, LHP, Regis HS (NY)
16th Round - Andrew Morris, RHP, Gulf Coast CC (FL)
19th Round - Rowan Wick, OF, Carson Graham HS (BC)
26th Round - Daniel Gibson, LHP, Jesuit HS (FL)
33 Round - William Kankel, LHP, University of Houston
34 Round - Conor Fisk, RHP, Grafton HS (WI)
35 Round - Tc Mark, C, Pinnacle HS (AZ)
40th Round - Scott Matyas, RHP, University of Minnesota
43th Round - Steven Okert, LHP, Grayson County CC (TX)
45th Round - Lucas Moran, RHP, Lutheran North HS (TX)
46th Round - Derek Goodwin, C, Diamond Ranch HS (CA)
47th Round - Billy Schroeder, C, Grand Canyon University
49th Round - Alex Simone, OF, Christian Brothers Academy HS (NY)
50th Round - Chad Jones, OF, Louisiana State University
Feel free to post updates or rumors as the August 16th deadline gets closer.
Hart signs 3 year extension
No terms yet.
Suppan Released
From Andrew Wagner of OnMilwaukee.com:
The Brewers have released right-hander Jeff Suppan, who was in the final year of a four-year contract.
Suppan 0-2 this season with a 7.84 ERA in 15 appearances. After starting the season on the disabled list, Suppan made two starts before being moved to the bullpen.
Since signing a $42 million contract with the Brewers after the 2006 season, Suppan posted a 29-36 record with a 5.08 ERA.
By releasing Suppan, the team clears space on both the 25 and 40-man roster, which will allow them to replace Todd Coffey, who was placed on the disabled list Sunday with a thumb injury.
EDIT: The JSBlog says the Brewers have purchased the contract of RHP Chris Smith from Nashville.

Kind of an interesting listen, especially his view on Gamel.
Some observations/quotes:
-- No OF prospects in AAA (duh), but mentioned Haydel along with Gindl and Cain as potential prospects in AA
-- Gindl - "spark plug" "more of a middle of the pack type player"
-- Gamel "had a couple shots and not taken the job"
-- 2b strong suit in org - Weeks, Lawrie and Farris
-- 1b depth - "needs to be addressed"
-- Lawrie thought he would progress quickly to MLB by catching, changed his mind after first instructional league. Has done nice job at 2B, can also play 3B and played OF in high school
He also says "about' just like you would expect a Canadian to which is always fun to listen to.
Brewer fans in Chicago
I started a Facebook group for Brewer fans living in Chicago. Basically I'm just looking to see what kind of interest there is and go from there.
Ideally, I think it would be cool to have a couple bar outings during the season or at the very least be able to identify a couple Brewer friendly bars to catch games.
Feel free to sign up or pass along to your friends who may not read BCB.

Four More:
12. Mark Rogers, RHP: Rogers’ stuff was outstanding after missing two years due to shoulder problems, but can he pitch more than three innings every five days?
13. Caleb Gindl, OF: He’s a small outfielder and very low on tools, but his production at the plate has been impressive.
14. Jake Odorizzi, RHP: He has advanced command and control for his age, but Odorizzi’s stuff has yet to take the expected step forward.
15. Zach Braddock, LHP: This power lefty took a big step forward with a move to bullpen; he has the ceiling of a set-up man.

Riske to DL; Swindle up
Via TH:
I just talked to assistant GM Gord Ash who said Riske "casually" mentioned some tightness in the elbow over the weekend and said it did not subside in recent days. Ash said there's some slight swelling to go with the tightness but right now the severity is unknown.
Kendall to catch less?
I'm guessing this will be music to many fan's ears:
"I could see him getting at least one day off a week, but he's not going to be happy about it," said Macha, who was Kendall's manager in Oakland in 2005 and 2006. "It's just too bad."
What a manager says on February 16th and what he actually does throughout the season can be drastically different, but I think this is a good sign nonetheless.
BP's Brewer's Top 11 Prospects

3. Mat Gamel, 3B
4. Jeremy Jeffress, RHP
5. Angel Salome, C
Three-Star Prospects
6. Lorenzo Cain, CF
7. Jake Odorizzi, RHP

Two-Star Prospects
10. Wily Peralta, RHP
11. Caleb Gindl, RF
Just Missed: Evan Frederickson, LHP; Taylor Green, 3B; Seth Lintz, RHP
Ranking Challenges: There is no true, classic top prospect in the system, but a set of five very good prospects that are hard to separate, as they all combine much to like with significant issues. The dropoff from the first five is sizeable, as the system's become rather mediocre quickly due to graduations and trades.
There was nothing earth shattering in any of their comments. I'm a bit surprised on how high they were on players from the recent draft instead of current players like Taylor Green.
Randolph named bench coach
I did not see this one coming, though I think I like the hire.
Dunn to the D-Backs
For 3 prospects.
