I'm only fanatical about a few things in life. My Carolina Panthers and my Arizona Diamondbacks are near the top of my list. Besides the love for my teams, I'm into Xbox 360, music, ranting about this country's over-usage and obsession with the word 'freedom', our completely broken political system and the overall American normalcy surrounding the acceptance of government and religion.

Are they trying or NOT trying to protect Romo?
2012 Roster Keepers... and departures that wouldn't make me cry.
As I watched the game today, there are a few players that I think deserve to stay on the roster next season. Now of course, this not about the obvious keepers... the is about the less obvious guys. My information on contract lengths isn't really up to par, but here are my nominees for roster keepers for the 2012 season:
1. Jordan Senn. The last few weeks this guys is always around the ball. Last year his numbers were very pedestrian, but Senn has really progressed. He's easily surpassed his play of last year and helped a rather weak linebacking unit. For what I've seen of Senn in his 5 starts, I'd like to see him back next year. Keep him!
2. Thomas Keiser. Being an un-drafted rookie, you really have to make the best of your playing time, if you even get any. In his 5 appearances (before today), he's accumulated 3 sacks, and 1 INT. I'd love to see Keiser continue to develop and be a stud backup in the DE rotation. Definitely a keeper!!
3. Legedu Naanee. Although some will disagree with me here, Naanee has been much better in the second half of the season. This has been his highest statistical year (40 rec, 439 yds, 1 TD) and he also hasn't committed a single turnover. I realize he hasn't been Mr. Clutch, but I don't really think he's hurt this team as it continues to grow. Naanee's fate will be determined by the return of Gettis and further development of our other guys. He holds more value than AE at this point. If he's cheap, I say keep him!
I know there are a few others to throw in the keeper category. Much will be decided after the draft as I really don't see us fixing too many things through free agency. Either way, I'm already looking forward to next season. I'm sure we're in for some changes in the next 8 months.
Last but not least... these people's departure wouldn't make me cry:
1. Olindo Mare. He's had a terrible year, I'm still pissed off at him and for the money we're paying he hasn't been worth a damned penny of it. If anything, we keep working Kunalic or bring in a guy that's not in his late 30's. We need a franchise kicker again. I miss Kasay and we'll never have him again. Doh, Olindo!
2. Armanti Edwards. I'm on the fence with this one. Maybe I'd feel better if he was a former 6th-round draft pick. He hasn't done anything yet... I mean, I guess he completed a pass today. But when your on-field opportunities are limited, it's because you haven't shown enough in practice to warrant those opportunities. We were told, "AE is looking like a WR!" right as the season was about to begin and I'd just actually like to see that: AE, in a game, where he does something. AE has to earn some time on the field before I move him out of this category. With a returning Gettis, I can't see AE anywhere in the WR mix.
3. Jeff Otah. With Otah, it's time to move on. He's played 4 games in the last two seasons. We can't put faith in someone that is a perennial IR. Every time I heard something about Otah and his health, I feel as if I'm being whispered a hallow lie by my evil and dirty ex-wife. I don't need that. Now, every time I think of Otah, I'm reminded of that horrid excuse of a woman. Damn it, Otah!
4. Mike Goodson. Although he's had a few "spark" moments in his young career, I don't think there's room for him in the backfield. Behind D-Will and Stew, there's Josh Vaughan, a very capable fill-in. Hell, Sutton is still out there. I'd love seeing him re-signed. Goodson's had 2 more fumbles than TD's and that's probably a few too many to keep him on next years roster.
5. Thomas Davis. I hate even thinking this because I really like Davis. Physically though, I don't think his knees can last. Now I am sad. *sniffle*
Honestly, if we keep all these guys and win, I wouldn't be happier. I think I'm simply finding things I don't want to see repeated next season. What do y'all think?!

2011 Panthers and 2010 Lions: Comparisons and Progressions
One of my co-workers (Paul, a diehard Lions fan) made a few comments to me on Monday. I showed up at work and did my usual Monday football whining and pouting. My friend Paul sympathized and pointed out a few things about his 2010 Lions team and what they have in common with the 2011 Panthers:
1. Keeping games close. 6 of the Lions 10 losses were within 7 points or less. The 6-10 Lions were a few painful plays away from having a 10-6 record. Our 4 losses have all been within 7 points or less. Every loss is painful as we've been close enough to smell a win. With our shocking, Cam-era offense, I think we'll stick in more games than the Lions did last year. Maybe not win every game, but these Panthers are will fight to the end against any team.
2. Playmakers. The 2010 Lions had mainly Calvin Johnson (minus Matthew Stafford) and Ndamukong Suh for their respective units. Our 2011 Panthers have the beautiful surprise of the cool-under-pressure Cam Newton, Steve Smith re-emerging with a vengeance, very capable RB's and an O-Line that is doing a decent job. Now, we have some great defensive players, some of them though get caught out of place. Overall, I think there is more talent on our 2011 Panthers roster than there was on the 2010 Lions roster. (In short, we have playmakers in place. I could name names but would look like a subjective fanboy in the process.) We've got more from Swank after the jump...

I see the many of the same names on posts... and there are many! I know some of you are in the Carolina's and I know some like myself are a thousands of miles away. So, where y'all from?!
My first attempt at a "Splatter" photo! I heart Cam.
(Original Image, Chuck Burton - AP)
A winning recipe devoid of Tim Tebow and Kyle Orton...
Ingredients:
1. A defense (something zesty, perhaps aggressive?)
2. A run game (any combination of backs will do just fine!)
3. An offensive line (one that can punch some holes and even provide protection!)
4. Some QB (no better than Trent Dilfer required)
5. Perseverance (don't freak out if you get behind, work that gameplan!)
First, use the defense to stop the running attack. It may take a couple of tries to work out the bumps! After forcing a punt, begin to run the ball. You may have to kneed the offensive line a bit (to provide appropriate running lanes). At this point, don't give up! Use the QB to trickle in a few passes (just to keep things different). Keep running! You should now be able to use the QB to throw a few deep balls or a dash over the middle. Again, don't forget that running game! It is time consuming, but makes the end result so much more pleasant for everyone (even the QB)! Mmmmm, can you smell that cooking? Okay now, simply repeat the process until you reach your desired win!
Frankly, I am shocked no one has had long, lengthy negative posts about the defense completely under-performing for a good portion of the game. 190 yards given up on the ground... wow. I'm also surprised no one has verbally raped the run game. 39 yards... 39 yards rushing, and we expect to win? Seriously? It's always Orton this and Tebow that. I don't really give a rat's ass about either of them at this point, who starts or who doesn't. Niether of them can lead us to a win if other OBVIOUS problems are not remedied. It's that simple. Period.

Denver's QB situation: Oddly familiar, Oddly different...
First, I'd like to say all of this stuff in Denver makes me greatly appreciate Rivera & Company, Cam, Smith, hell, everyone and the efforts that have been put in to the rebuilding process of our Panthers. I'm damned thankful.
Second, forgive me for posting about another team, but I've been monitoring the Orton vs. Tebow thing over at the Mile High Report and man, it is bad. It reminded me of our last season, but it looks and feels different. I respectfully posted a few things at the Mile High Report attempting to understand Denver's fan-woes. Some didn't appreciate it and seemed jaded and all on-board the unproven Tebow Train. The other side of fans realizes there are more problems than just QB play. From my observation, their fanbase is dividing more and more every day.
Last year, when we had our plethora of FanPost's with Clausen or Moore's name in the subject, I was a part of the unrelenting banter. I actively participated. I bashed on our guys and offered ridiculous and unrealistic solutions. It was a constant topic for CSR. Our QB's couldn't do a damn thing right. Fumbles, INT's, etc. The team in general didn't help any of our QB's. In Denver, it seems different.
On one hand there's Kyle Orton (7000+ yds, 44 TD's, 21 INT's, 60% Completion while in Denver - 30 games) who's the starter. He threw for 300 yards, 2 TD's, 1 INT, 1 Fumble (pretty costly too) on Monday night vs. Oakland. By the numbers, it doesn't look bad at all. But for some, it was considered a very poor performance.
On the other hand, there's Tim Tebow (654 yds, 5 TD's, 3 INT's, 50% Completion while in Denver - 9 games) who's the co-back up. Or back up, whatever. His name was chanted to come in and "save" a game, where multiple and more immediate problems lingered.
To me, Orton doesn't suck as bad as many make him sound. Now, he does have things to improve on. But, it just seems the Tebow fanatics are getting way out of control with the whole thing. Tebowmania seems to think the kid can bring progress or make them win. With these following issues, I just don't see it happening. We've been there, we've done that. It didn't matter who was under center.
1. Denver's defense has been ineffective. Rush defense has been a major issue there. Not forcing turnovers.
2. They can't run the ball, forcing the passing game to "work" or else...
3. They're O-line is very suspect and can't make holes and consistently keep pressure off the QB.
4. Playing from behind brings a sense of urgency and an increased frequency in the passes attempted.
Being that we've been through something similar in our last few seasons, would we have demanded Orton be benched in favor of Tebow? Chatter about making billboards to get the point across? I don't know, I feel our reason's were justified last year. We really had no option at QB. Too many issues on both sides of the ball for it to make a difference.
I know there is frustration there, but are the Tebow-fanatics being inconsiderate with the whole situation? Are they really in that desperate of a situation to warrant some of their behavior? Would Tebow make a difference? I don't think so. Not with their current problems. For Fox and Denver, I wish them the best.
GO PANTHERS!!! (damned proud to be a Panther fan!)
Reasons to not throw Orton under the bus after Week 1...
I know coming from a Panther fan, this may not have any validity and maybe this has all been said before. But, respectfully, I have to say, why are so many people demanding for Tebow after the first game? A few things I noticed on Monday Night.
1. Orton is not a franchise guy, but he is no slouch. With that said, if you can't get more than 38 yds on the ground you have only one option on offense... throw the ball. I know after Denver got behind, it became urgent to get back into the game. But, only 13 rushing attempts? Foxy/McCoy have to get that running game going. I love Mike McCoy but the play-calling became predictable the very second Denver got behind. Oakland capitalized. (and I hate Oakland)
2. He was sacked 5 times and was under pressure a good portion of the night. The O-Line HAS to do better. Any QB under this much pressure is bound to screw up.
3. Other guys put the ball on the ground too. I know it was really wet, but Orton wasn't the only guy to kill a drive.
4. The defense can't stop the run. Maybe more to blame for the loss than anything.
If you put all of these together they all interconnect. Any QB can be successful with an efficient run game, and time in the pocket. If your defense can't help the offense there's nothing much you can do. With everything that factored into the loss, I am surprised Kyle Orton didn't play worse. If you put Tebow under center, the run game continues to suffer, the defense gets ran over and you can't protect Tebow, you'll be in a far worse position than you imagined.
My final word: I know Denver wants to get back into the post-season, so does Carolina. And at some point we both will. Orton wasn't the leading cause of your loss, but he wasn't innocent. I think there are other things I would see as major concerns with Denver... and Orton isn't among them. Either way guys, good luck! Things will come around!
Anyone bought a Cam jersey yet? ...and good places to buy!
It seems like the NFL has it's new up and coming jersey king. Reports have been seen from numerous sources that after Cam's performance on Sunday his jersey sales have "sky-rocketed." This really isn't a surprise. Goodbye Tim Tebow, hello Cam Newton!
Prior to Sunday, I was planning on buying one or two... okay, all three. Then Sunday night I felt a great urgency to do this now. I've done plenty of scouting and have found a few places. Personally, I scoff at the idea of paying $250+ for an "authentic" jersey. Sometimes it makes me feel like a cheap-ass but that's a lot of damn money. And still, the replica's are $84.99. Ouch!!!
One of my friends, who's a crazed and rabid Packers fan(so unfortunate) went on a jersey spending spree a few years back. Ultimately, he paid around $114 for 4 jerseys. Were they authentic? Not necessarily . BUT, they were not screen-printed. I saw them and I was impressed. I bought a Peppers jersey (Bahhh!! I know, bad idea huh?) from one of these sites. When it arrived it looked good. The only thing that I saw different between "authentic" and these... the material of the sewn numbers and name was different. Other than that, it was the same thing in the stores. I can post pics if you'd like.
I have since place another order: $89.95 total for a while, a blue and a black Newton jersey. Hell, they even have Olsen #88's available now, Beason #52 and Mills #51 (sniffle.. miss him). These sites look a bit sketchy, but you will get your product. These jersey's are made in the same country that Reebok contracts to... China. So, if you're skeptical, allow me to be your collective guinea pig. I'll post pics when they arrive. I really can't wait!
SO, for all the people wanting to take a peek at a jersey or five and don't want another screenprint, check out these links. Just trying to share some economy-sensitive jersey love!

Tyrod Taylor: Why he looks better than our QB's...
One thing I noticed after our dismal game, Tyrod Taylor of the Ravens looked pretty damned efficient vs. the Redskins on MNF. He had Andy Dalton-like stats in the second half of the game. 11/18, 125yds, 1 TD.
Now, I understand Taylor's performance was against 2nd and 3rd teamers, but still... Taylor had more passing yards than both of our guys combined. Is this because the Ravens have better 2nd and 3rd team talent and continuity? (NO, I think we have plenty of untapped talent to go around. Continuity IS an issue on offense. Our new offense, new terminology, etc.) Could it be the Raven's have been running the same offensive system for many seasons? (Possibly. It just seems the Raven's 2nd and 3rd's were meshing together looking like they at least somewhat knew their offense.) Could it be Taylor had a better opportunity to play, actually getting onto the field? (YES, this is the Raven's defense. 2nd's, 3rd's still, it's a Raven's defense. They get their offense onto the field.) Could it be Taylor was comfortable in having superior protection and time to make sensible decisions? (YES, he looked comfortable, and seldom had to run for his life.) Was Taylor playing against a poopy Redskin's defense? (More than likely, but I do think the Bengals has been worse. Either way, still both poopy.)
Now, I'm not saying Taylor is better than Cam or Clausen nor am I joining his Fan Club, but it did kind of make my gut churn watching this 2011 6th rounder look like more of a QB than our boys. Maybe this is me bitching, maybe this is me subconsciously understanding why our QB's have been so ineffective? A cry for help? I have no idea.
On the understanding and realistic side, there are obvious factors that have effected Cam n' Clausen's effectiveness like: Inconsistent offensive line play married to a so far ineffective run game, a scaled-back playbook tied to an offensive system that's been in place for 3 or 4 weeks, and a defense that CAN'T seem get off the field. These things have not helped out QB's at all.
My thoughts on Mr. Cam Newton.
1. Focus on foot work, foot work and only foot work. If Cam can step into his throws his accuracy would improve dramatically. He can make the throws and we know this. But he won't when all of his weight is on his right foot. If Cam can get this down, the coaching staff can then worry about pocket presence.
2. Let Cam be Cam. I know they're trying to develop Cam into a pocket passer, but he looks a little uncomfortable attempting to sit in the pocket. I'm sure he's being encouraged to stick in the pocket (or what's left of it) for as long as he can. I know that first instinct for him is to run and not sit. But, If they implement new things into his game piece by piece, little by little, I think he may have an easier transition. I don't know, does it seem like he's being rushed into the "Pocket Passer" classification? Maybe my view here is overshadowed by the offensive line not giving him enough opportunity?
3. I think I'm typing all of this because I'm a worried, eclectic, hopeful, wishful-thinking couch potato that has no coaching experience whatsoever. Anyway, I want to see the Panthers succeed. I want to see Cam succeed. I know there's a ton of work and learning to go on in between failure and success and I guess we just have to hold faith and stay optimistic. On another note, what in the hell, defense? What in the hell?! Piss!!!!
Ron Rivera makes Mike Goodson carry around a football
The pic seems to not work. Bummer!! Thought this was funny though.
Giving ESPN's Mark Schlereth some credit...
I just saw Mark Schlereth's analysis of Cam tonight on ESPN. He complimented Cam on a few good reads, a check down or two and getting better at selling the run. He also mentioned that when the pocket is clear Cam makes accurate throws "with authority." Schlereth also noted when Cam is under pressure his accuracy drops off, which is also presently true. Earlier in the week we got listen to ESPN's Merrill Hoge tell us how inaccurate and terrible Cam Newton is while simultaneously getting hot, bothered and wet over Ryan Mallett. These are my personal notes to our beloved EPSN Analysts:
Mark Schlereth, High-five for shining some positive light on the progression of Cam Newton. He does need more work, and repetition of good habits. And you're right, he'll get there.
Merril Hoge, you're kind of a dick. Go watch film on Tim Tebow to reiterate how terrible you think he is. Maybe you can have a "Who's more terrible?! Cam or Tim?!" Late Night Special on ESPN Classic? Tell Ryan Mallett "Hello Ryan.." from me on your guys' Carnival Cruise to Douche Bay near the Coast of Youaredick. Ass!
Overall, yeah, Cam does need to AND WILL improve. I have no doubt in this. He does have some bad habits to squash (throwing off the back foot, locking on to guys, etc). He showed these bad habits tonight. He will settle down and he will be an effective starter with time. He's only begun the adjustment to the pro game. Cam may not be ready for a starting role now, but he has shown glimpses of being something special in the NFL and for our Panthers.
On a personal note: One year ago, I NEVER expected to be writing something nice to support Cam Newton. I guess that Panther Blue makes all the difference. Go get 'em Cam.

It's only the Pre-Season, BUT...
It was great to see LIFE in our boys. A few things I noticed in my limited view while I was at work.
1. The Defense. Every time I'd jump to the game it seemed like we were blitzing. There was always someone breaking through the line. Pre-season or not, I love this!!
2. The Offense. Without critiquing each player, I like the look of the new offense. I liked seeing shots DOWN the field. I'm liking this!
3. 3rd Down Efficiency. Sucked. The fact though we actually took shots down the field led to scores. Scores we never saw last year. The old years of being so damned conservative would've killed us here. If we ran the offense of last season tonight, we would be 0-1.
4. The Team. I liked what I watched. I know there's plenty of things for them to work on. But, like I said, our boys have LIFE again. And that much they displayed tonight. Rivera, Staff and Players get a long awaited high-five from me. Nice job guys!
Interesting insight to Madden 12...
My "Official" news report on the indictment of Aqib Talib...
In light of all the stupid, seflish NFL [insert BIG expletive], I thought was fun and that it would bring joy to every Carolina Panther fan! We knew this guy was a douche... and apparently a Texas grand jury agrees. Here's my version of the official news release. Enjoy!
SwankTheTank Press - (Dallas/Ft. Worth) The Tampa Bay Bucaneers most notorious miscreant, Aqib Talib, was officially charged today with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon. Back in March, Talib was arrested after trying to "let off a few hot rocks" at his sister boyfriend.
An officer from the Garland City Police Dept. describes the drama that led to the arrest. "Talib's highly-probable criminalistic and self-admitted promiscuous sister had some sort of petty argument with her probable-criminal and more-than-likely abusive boyfriend. Talib's response to this was, "Ahhhh hell nah! Break yo' self [expletive] [expletive]!" Shots rang out. The boyfriend escape any injury. Then we showed up to clear the scene. I kind of wanted to taze him.... no lie."
The interesting part of this report is Talib did not act alone. There was in fact a second shooter on scene! The second shooter was identified as Okolo Talib.... his mama. Okolo reportedly "busted out her piece because she don't take sh*t from anybody!" As it has been noticed, the retard doesn't fall far from the retard tree.
Fantastically, a grand jury in Texas today, has returned the indictment and Talib was "officially" charged with the crime. One juror gave us his thoughts: "I don't like him. We didn't even see evidence from his side... Didn't need to; I don't like him. I'm leading with my head... Hahaha! You like that Talib?!!" A young, cute and platinum blond juror said, "Taleen Habean? Who's that? I was textin' my girl all day. I finally got with Melvin Fletcher!! OMG! Teehehehe! What's your name?" One of the overseeing judges described the jury as "passionate" and "dedicated to justice."
Talib was freed on a $25,000 bond a week following the crime. Talib's charge of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon carries a 5 - 20 year prison sentence. His mama skated away from any charges to continue "regulating" her "hood." Now the question is... Will Talib make it to the court date? Or will he decide to get "gangsta" on someone else before then? Only time will tell.

National Football Post: Steve Smith interested in Chargers, Others.
Hey y'all,
I just saw this pop up. I'm not sure of the validity of this article supposedly coming from the San Diego Union-Tribune, but with all of the recent chatter it definitely raises an eyebrow. The short blip at http://www.nationalfootballpost.com/Steve-Smith-interested-in-Chargers-others.html reads:
Carolina Panthers wide receiver Steve Smith has made it clear that he wants a change of scenery and has requested a trade.
That includes potential destinations like the San Diego Chargers, Oakland Raiders and the Baltimore Ravens.
According to the San Diego Union-Tribune, the Chargers are monitoring the situation, which was likened to how the AFC West club started out with safety Bob Sanders(notes) prior to signing him.
Smith has caught 52 career touchdown passes.
The Chargers and Raiders would seem to make more sense for Smith as a possible link than Baltimore, which has Anquan Boldin(notes), Derrick Mason(notes) and drafted two wide receivers: Torrey Smith(notes) and Tandon Doss(notes).
If this is so, I really don't really understand why he'd want to leave Carolina to join a perennial choker like San Diego or just a pure disaster of an organization in Oakland. The Chargers do have a more than capable offense and would be even more explosive with a guy like Smith. All of that aside, their offense hasn't been able to carry the team through the defensive meltdown they face on their way to missing the playoffs. Oakland... well, I guess they won 8 games last season. Bah, I hardly see them as being a better option than Carolina. Ughhh, I don't know. I think I just want to see him finish his career as a Panther and I'll say anything to justify it.
The change of "rushing" tides in Denver...
Being a huge fan and supporter of the Panthers Fox-hire in 2002 and the Broncos recent hiring of Fox, here's a few things I can see happening... Then again, this could be old news. Either way, a few thoughts.
With Fox bringing Magazu and Tolbert to Denver, I see this in the forecast.
1. Dave Magazu's specialty, as it seems, has come with run blocking. Some of the best rushing seasons ever in Carolina Panther history came during Magazu's tenure. Expect stout and tough run blocking which inlcude Graham, Quinn and Gronkowski. Pass protection has been his only blemish in the past few seasons. Carolina never put together good protection for Jake Delhomme, Matt Moore or Jimmy Clausen. (All had rough years under insurmountable pressure). If Magazu can open holes for Moreno (or hopefully DeAngelo Williams), you can bet Tebow will take advantage of those holes as well. In the end, the Broncos will run the ball, and they will run it well! It could be scary!
2. Tyke Tolbert didn't really have a chance to blossom in Carolina. His only year as Panthers WR coach was this last season. Carolina did have the worst passing (and overall) offense around. Giving Tolbert the benefit of the doubt, he had 3 rookies(David Gettis, Brandon LaFell and Armanti Edwards), Steve Smith, and a plethora of waiver pick-ups to work with. With some Lloyd, Royal, Gaffney, Decker and Thomas, Tyke should have something to work with. A part of Tolbert's focus in Carolina was getting the receivers more physical at the line to help with run support.
It will be interesting to see if Fox goes after RB coach Jim Skipper. Skipper has been given credit in the insurgence of Panthers running game working with the likes of Stephen Davis, DeSean Foster, DeAngelo Williams (whom Skipper has a great relationship with), Jonathan Stewart and Mike Goodson. Skipper's first year in Carolina, they went to Superbowl 38. Davis rushed for over 1,400 yards that season. Another claim to fame were the two seasons (2008 and 2009) where Stewart and Williams both combined rushed for nearly 5,000 yards. My hopes are Skipper lands in Denver and if he does, DeAngelo Williams will follow.
All throughout my chilhood, driving from Scottsbluff, Nebraska down to Mile High Stadium on any given Sunday, I'm glad to be cheering for the Broncos again! I'm looking forward to a revamped Broncos team in 2011!

Panthers Head Coach Search Capsules: Four Candidates Emerge
These are the only names I've heard so far. I'm sure a few more may come into play. This is my short little analysis and history of these guys and what I think. My preliminary rankings have Ron Rivera as my favorite, and Perry Fewell tying Greg Manusky and Rob Ryan for the runner-up spot. What do y'all think?
via lrbears.com
Perry Fewell, and his claims to fame:
1. Born in Gastonia, NC
2. Defensive Backs coach from 1998-2005 through tenures with the Jaguars, Rams, and Bears (in that order).
3. Defensive Coordinator for the Buffalo Bills
2006 - #18 in Overall Defense in the NFL. (Carolina was #7)
2007 - #31 in Overall Defense in the NFL. (Carolina was #16)
2008 - #14 in Overall Defense in the NFL. (Carolina was #18)
2009 - #19 in Overall Defense in the NFL. (Carolina was #8)
4. Interim Head Coach for the Buffalo Bills from 2009-2010.
5. Defensive Coordinator for the New York Giants
2010 - #7 in Overall Defense in the NFL. (Carolina was #18)
My thoughts on Fewell:
The one plus is he was born in Carolina, if that is even considered a plus for a head coaching position. His defenses have been in the middle of the pack in comparison to the rest of the league. In terms of coaching, Fewell didn't have a fantastic supporting cast, as Buffalo has been very inconsistent. By far, Fewells' best defense came this year with the New York Giants. I would suppose this may reflect slightly off the defensive talent in NY as opposed to Buffalo. Based off of his history and resume, I am not really excited about Perry Fewell.

A personal moment... Inspired by John Fox
I will miss the guy! No doubt about that, but these "parting" times always come. In memory and a satirical moment at my job recently... I pulled a "Fox".
I was getting a semi-ass chewing of how one of my classes was underachieving and supposedly, I wasn't inspiring my students enough, blah, blah, blah. My reply to the situation, "It is what it is..." This was met with awkward looks and silence from my superiors. At that point, I silently thanked John Fox and went about my day.
Carolina Panthers Head Coach Classified Ad!
This is inspired by a post I had commented on. Enjoy!
Had enough yet Coach [insert name here]? Has the roll of "just an Asst. Coach" become stale? Does the University got you down?! Want a real challenge?! This is the opportunity you've been waiting for! The Carolina Panthers are seeking a fundamental oriented, offensive or even defensive-minded, patient, people person, to fill the Head Coach position!
Responsibilities and Expectations include:
- Take an athletically talented, yet tragically horrid and misguided football team and make it competitive.
- Tickle and nurture a damaged and tortured fanbase with your football prowess, consistency and success.
- Create a gameplan utilizing the players on your roster.
- Don't ever say, "It is what it is..."
- Score more than 16 TD's in one season.
- Hire an intelligent and respectable coaching staff. (e.g. not people from Cleveland)

Greetings from a newcomer!
Patriot Faithful,
I'm new to Pats Pulpit. I am a die-hard Carolina Panther fan and have had an active dislike for the Pats since SB 38. Go figure, right? Haha! I simply didn't like the Pats because they beat my team in a great Super Bowl. However, times have changed.
I grew up in western Nebraska watching Danny Woodhead in North Platte, NE and up in Chadron State College. He was a blast to watch on the field. I was kind of pissed when all the pro scouts said, "he's too small, too little this, too little that to make in the NFL." I was excited to see him at least make it onto the practice squad of the Jets. When he was cut, naturally, I was pissed at the Jets. Then you guys picked him up.
Seeing Woodhead have fun, being utilized, succeeding and being a part of a great team and organization has had a drastic effect on how I view and think of the Patriots. Watching his interactions with Brady, Welker and Co. really has shown me what kind of people make up this Patriots team and organization. (In fact, this same thing got my family back home buying Patriot jerseys and tuning in every Sunday!) I just felt it was time for me to say something.
Although Carolina will always be my No. 1, I can now proudly say I have a classy AFC team to be real fan of. With that said, good luck in the post season guys!!
Which free agent QB could be the best mentor for our young QBs?
Regardless of who we draft, who would we want to take the reigns and help groom our future QB? It could even come down who would we want as an OC or QB coach, or maybe a mixture of all three. Here's a list of guys that will likely be looking for a new home come 2011:
Donovan McNabb, Washington Redskins - After the turmoil and non-fitting situation with coach Mike Schanahan, McNabb will likely be on a new team next year. McNabb does have plenty of experience any team could benefit from. Even for being 34-years old, I feel he's still got a few good years left before he's considered as just a back up or even retiring. Was it McNabb, or the Reid/Mornhinweg-trained QB Coach James Urban, more responsible for Kevin Kolbs development? He could be a 1-2 year answer to take the reigns and help groom our young QBs?
Kevin Kolb, Philadelphia Eagles - Not sure here, but with the reemergence of Vick and the desire to start, Kolb could end up starting elsewhere next season. I don't really see the Eagles parting ways with Vick at this point. Kolb is not overly experienced, but seems to have been brought up well in Philly. Despite a shaky game @ Tennessee, he's been fairly productive when starting or filling in this season. Kolb also has youth (26 yrs) to be further developed. He could be enticing if available, but could also put us in another Matt Moore situation.
Kyle Orton, Denver Broncos - I'm not certain Orton will be a free agent come the offseason. I think a lot of it depends on who takes over the HC, GM and OC in Denver. in the past, Orton has been labeled as a "game manager," but has flourished at times in Denver with a subpar surrounding cast. At the age of 28, Orton does have plenty left in the tank. When given time Orton has made pretty decent decisions and has made guys like Brandon Lloyd and Jabar Gaffney look much improved. What could Orton do for a young QB, and what could he do with more talent than he has in Denver?
Shaun Hill, Detroit Lions - Hill has never been overly-spectacular, but at times he has shown efficiency and some smarts. Being a good backup in Detroit, Hill has kept the Lions competitive while starting for oft-injured Matthew Stafford. Hill doesn't have what I'd call a "cannon," but he clearly exceeds our current situation at starting QB. Does Hill have the necessary experience to help our youth and get us some wins?
Matt Hasselbeck, Seattle Seahawks - With no other great option at QB, I'm thinking Seattle may keep Hasselbeck around another year, although nothing is certain at this point. Hasselbeck hasn't been great since 2007 and has been up and down ever since. He's taken a good beating in the last few seasons and his age(35) doesn't bode well for longevity. If he was available, I see him as a "6-game starter," then taking the back up/mentor roll for a team with a young QB. If he makes a move, his next team will likely be his last.
Tarvaris Jackson, Minnesota Vikings - Even though to future at QB in Minnesota is unclear, it sounds like Jackson will be looking for work after the season. Jackson is still pretty young at the age of 27. I'm not that sure if he'd be a guy Clausen and Co. could look to for guidance. His lack of experience may play a roll in where he ends up.
Troy Smith, San Francisco 49ers - The world hasn't seen much from Smith until recently. He was average in the backup roll for Alex Smith, although his mobility was one thing that helped him pull off 3 wins this year. He has since been sitting as No. 2 again to Alex Smith(who could also be looking for work next year). Many things hinge on if Singeltary and Co. stick around next year and who San Fran can swoop up in the draft.
Bruce Gradkowski, Oakland Raiders - I don't see him as being a full-fledged starter yet, but he has shown bursts of potential. If he stays or goes, he's got to try and clean up his hands a little. 19 fumbles in 32 games isn't a very kind stat, although it's better than our 12 QB fumbles in 13 games this season. If anything, Gradkowski would be an interesting backup. I don't see much more than that though.
Then, the list of potential FA guys that don't really excite me:
Trent Edwards, JT O'Sullivan, Seneca Wallace, Brodie Croyle, Tyler Thigpen, Jim Sorgi, Billy Volek, Kerry Collins, Tyler Thigpen, Dennis Dixon, Matt Moore, Rex Grossman.
So much of this really depends on our coaching/coordinator changes. Our O-line will need a good shakedown if any Carolina QB is to have a chance at success. If we are talking a true veteran that can help right away, I'm looking at McNabb, Orton, Hill or maybe Kolb. Now, things may change, other guys may end up being available too. As of this moment, these are the guys I see as some options.
I do want to take this time to address some of the bad-mouthing I've done about JR this year. It was really uncalled for... I wanted something and someone to blame for our demise. And well, I was just being irrational. Sorry guys... The truth about JR is when he wants to commit to winning, he does and he wins. He went out in the 2003 offseason and spent good money on free agents that did contribute and made a difference that got us to the Superbowl. Knowing this, I am excited to see what JR does this year. We have many changes coming our way and I'm ready and waiting for them!
And Jeff Davidson still really, really sucks... :)
A fun, exciting and beaten down topic: Our future at Quarterback. (and a hope...)
The future of our team at QB still is so exciting to me. I'm curious to see what will happen. I know some people are all in favor of drafting Luck. Some are getting hot and bothered about Cam Newton. I'm trying to not jump on anyones bandwagon(although I'm easily persuaded)... So here's a short little blip on who I don't want and who and what I'm really open for...
Who I don't want: Cam Newton
1. He had one game where he attempted more than 25 passes. Additionally, he ranks #86 in pass attempts. Pretty shoddy for a spread offense QB.
2. He started for one single season.
3. The unknown Dan Persa of Northwestern, has more attempts, completions, and a higher completion percentage than Newton and no one gives a rats ass about him. Scott Tolzien from Wisconsin also had more attempts, completions, and a higher completion percentage than Cam and yep… this guy isn’t high on anyone’s draft board either.
He did single handedly win a few games for Auburn, but this is a slower college game than what he’d face in the NFL. Newton is a good athlete on a good team… but in my eyes, far from what is needed to be an NFL QB. Needless to say, I'm probably bias. For some reason, I'm not a Cam fan...
Who I'm open with right now:
Andrew Luck, Ryan Mallett, Jake Locker, Andy Dalton or Colin Kaepernik. I haven't watched enough on any of these guys to say, "Hell yeah! (insert young QB) is our man!" Some of these guys have been interesting. I'm not sure of anyones draft status. I am merely observing possibilities.
I'm also open for:
Bringing in a good veteran to manage the game and help Clausen progress. Veteran leadership and confidence would help Clausen out a ton. I don't think Clausen is impossible. He has had absolutely nothing and no one for guidance in Carolina. Rip Scherer should not be the guy that's acclimating Jimmy to the pro game. Scherer was yet another failure from Cleveland. It's kind of funny... Scherer and Davidson were co-workers in Cleveland from 2005 to the end of 2006. ...Why the hell do we hire these guys from Cleveland?
My honest hope for next season:
Next year, I want at least one solid reason(not the lofty thoughts of changes at QB) to be excited about this team again. Hell, at this point, I'd be okay with a losing record next year. I just want to see something moving in a positive direction. For every positive, these Panthers overshadow it with four negatives. Win or lose, I want that desire to tune into the game every week in anticipation... not fear and dread. Fire everyone, bring in free agents, draft like a pro, or do it all... I don't care. The fanbase was tested last season with all the issues at QB, weak playcalling, and questionable calls by Fox. This season, we haven't only been tested, we've been hog-tied and dragged across the desert of false hope on a weakening rope of faith. Panthers front office, please make this fanbase proud and happy again. Pretty please?

If this Sunday turns tragic too quickly, you could always...
...find a sweet link to watch Cleo Lemon and the Toronto Argonauts battle Chris Leak and the Montreal Alouettes in the CFL's Eastern Finals! Gametime is 1:00pm EST.
But Wait! if this isn't enough fist-pumping, chair-kicking, kitten-throat-punching action for you... Darian Durant and the Saskatchewan Roughriders take on Henry Burris(?) and the Calgary Stampede in the CFL's Western Final at 4:30pm EST! So there you have it! Wooooooo!! (I like how they spell 'offence' and 'defence' in Canada. Hehe!)
Okay... so it's only a joke. Maybe.
I have just one wish for Sunday... to watch a Panther game and not throw anything at my TV and to not scare my cat by yelling an expletive laden "Jeff Davidson" slur. I'll see you here on Sunday.
Showing 1 - 29 of 29
