SwimTexas

Apr 21, 2008 Jun 01, 2012 31 1559

31 years old. UT fan all my life. Did not attend UT because I wanted to swim in college and UT only recruits future Olympians. So I chose the sport I loved over the University I root for, and no that does not make me less of a fan than you.

Also, I think this picture of my 3 year old Daughter is damn near the best picture on the planet.

a fan of

Houston Rockets National Basketball Association Team

Men's Swimming & Diving wins 16th straight Big 12 Championship and 33rd straight conference title under Coach Eddie Reese.

I know its just swimming and for most of you this means very little. But the level of excellence in this program is just incredible - and for 33 years? Amazing.

By the way, during that time, we have only finished outside the top 5 nationally once (7th) and have 11 national championships.

Good luck next month fellas.

Burnt Orange Nation Out of Conference Games

Off Season football fodder other than recruiting.

Looking at our future schedues here, over the next 9 seasons we are currently set to play the following teams OOC:

Notre Dame - 4 times

USC - 2 Times

Cal - 2 Times

BYU - 2 Times

Ole Miss - 2 Times

Rice - 2 Times

Arkansas - 1 Time

UCLA - 1 Time

UCF - 1 Time

UTEP - 1 Time

Wyoming - 1 Time

There are still several (9-10) games yet to be scheduled, though most of the filler will likely be the lightweights, as the heavy hitters schedule further in advance. And there is always the chance (especially with realignment) that teams will cancel or reschedule. So things could change.

However, with 4 games vs Notre Dame, 7 games vs solid PAC 12 teams, and 3 games against SEC teams I do not think that you could call this slate of OOC opponents weak by any stretch. Keep in mind, we will only play 3 ooc games per year now. There is often a heated debate as to what teams Texas should play ooc by the BONers. So what do we think of this slate of future opponents? Here is what I think:

Burnt Orange Nation Was our Defense overrated?

According to this guy it was.

"In seven plays, the accolades that had piled up for Texas' defense came to a crashing halt.

That's how long it took for a good offense to expose what was either an overrated or unmotivated defense by putting up two quick-strike touchdowns.

Since the latter isn't all that plausible considering this was the last regular season game for several seniors and it was against a team that embarrassed Texas year ago, the only logical conclusion to draw is that the Texas defense is not as good as suspected."

I disagree. Why this reasoning is flawed.....

As I was following the event, I thought for sure we hadcome back to win just like last year. The last relay won in spectacular fashion and champion Cal's relay finished a distant 4th.... but it was already too large a defecit to climb out of.

A moment is due for Eddie Reese. 10 National Championships, 9 second place finishes, 7 third place finishes. That is 26 top 3 finishes nationally in his 33 years at UT. He has only once finished out of the top 5. Incredible.

Congrats to our boys on another thrilling season.

Also, Women finish an impressive 6th. They are really moving in the right direction as a program. If they recruit well this year, they could make some more noise next spring.

Apparently Brown said it was his cousin doin the tweeting on his behalf. And he got a little carried away.

I hope this is the case. If so, it is good to hear.

Texas offensive coordinator Greg Davis is out in part because the Longhorns can’t run the ball. Cody Johnson’s 592 rushing yards this season are the most by a Texas tailback in three years. I thought about that Saturday as I watched Oregon’s 5-foot-9 tailback LaMichael James (1,682 yards) of Texarkana and Oregon State’s 5-foot-7 tailback Jacquizz Rodgers (1,184 yards) of Richmond, Tex. Too bad they weren’t big enough to play for Texas.

It has been said before, but it is still pretty applicable. And he didn't even mention Lache Seastrunk, Christine Michael, Cyrus Gray, or LaMichael James (we didn't exclude because of size, but they are all good CFB running backs from Texas).

We sure have had a lot of misses at running back. Hopefully that trend ends now.

The Brandon Williams crush has spread. It is not just me and GoBR apparently. And did Desmond Jackson get worse? Lots of movement here.

Pretty funny stuff from C&C Machine, yet it kinda makes me want to vomit a little at the same time.

HP ranks his top DEs for 2010 and Sam comes in at number 2. Don't know if this has already been posted because it is fairly old, but in case you missed it, watch the interview with Sam. This is just flat out a special kid. Unreal.

Stories like this are ignored too often because stories about fights in bars make for better sports radio, but this is truly amazing. Makes me proud to be a longhorn.

Some pretty significant changes at the top..... and Check out who the top DB is.

Interesting consolidation of stuff. To freaks like me who have read everything imaginable since last year about these kids, this is somewhat repetitive, but still, very nicely done.

I printed one out for my dad who is.... shall we say..... internet challenged.

Burnt Orange Nation Underclassmen Team 2010

I started thinking about this when I read a quote from someone in my copy of The Eyes of Texas that read "This incoming class could almost field an entire team" or something to that affect.  Anyway, this got me thinking about what a team of entirely underclassmen would look like.  I know the story of the week is obviously the big game, but with this year's class almost complete, I thought it might be an interesting distraction to discuss the future and what positions look the best/worst, etc.

Weird (and meaningless) post by Rivals. Just a gimmick because they have column inches to fill, however I did find it odd that Oklahoma dominated the Big 12 list.... particularly the offensive Tackle duo. I thought OU's O-line was supposed to be their biggest weakness this year?

Bumped. Anyone know anything about UT's architectural engineering program? --PB--

Has this been posted in anything? I think him waiting is good news for Texas. We have time to make a last impression. We also have a large group of recievers on their way out of the program. Not to mention GG and about 7 5star OL's.

Any new news/thoughts on this kid?

Burnt Orange Nation Conference Titles

OK, so I read about our Baseball team's Conference Championship a few minutes ago, and in the write-up it said this was the 75th conference title of the program's history.  75!!  Really!?  That number just jumped out at me as ridiculous.  So I decided to check.......

Burnt Orange Nation Swimming Recruiting?

That is right, a small but stellar class for the Men's Swim Team.... but the surprise is the women's recruiting class this year.  No out of State problems here!  I have seen several of these kids swim and they are awesome.  It is great to see the women's team get in the game on some of the top recruits like this.

I apologize for the formatting mistakes.  I couldn't fix them.

As for the current team, Nationals is in a few weeks.  It is in College Station this year.  The men are favored, although I am still skeptical.  But we will see.  I will write something up as the event gets closer.

Burnt Orange Nation Article about Texas Basketball future

I don't know if this has already been posted but I am so excited about the next 2 classes that Texas has coming in.  Like just about anyone in Texas, I have always been football first.  And truthfully, I think I might be swimming second...... but Watching what Rick Barnes has done with UT Basketball is just really getting me into Hoops.

The last couple of lines of this article talks about them wanting to bring a championship to Ausitin..... I hope so.  Barnes deserves one.

Burnt Orange Nation Style Points

OK so sour grapes aside, and I have plenty, but I think there is a big picture argument here that no one is talking about.  The style points that have been moving Oklahoma up the polls the last several weeks (last week enough to jump Texas in both human polls) therefore setting up basically an even split with Texas in this rankings have been from scoring points - lots of points.

(Now I know that it was the computers that put OU over the top, but for arguments sake, stay with me)

Now Mack, and many other coaches out there have stopped considering running up the score since they took out Margin of Victory from the computers deeming it unimportant.  But this year's national championship game could be determined by simply that - running up the score.

Anybody think that we could not have put 50+ or 60+ up against A&M if we keep our foot on the gas the whole time?  How about Kansas?  When did Colt come out against Colorado or Mizzou?  And what about our defenses?  How many 4th quarter "Meaningless points" did we give up because our second string was in the game?

All I heard today was "Oklahoma scored 60+ points the last 4 games...."  I don't like that this was rewarded.  I don't like what that means for college football.

Burnt Orange Nation McGee

I have never been so happy to see someone lose as I was McGee today.  Seeing him on the sideline in the 4th quarter wearing a ball cap just made me thankful.

I pride myself on being a UT fan and not a ATM or OU Hater..... in other words, I typically don't root against anyone else, just for my team.  But seeing McGee barking at our defense and remembering him and his attitutde and jawing from years past, and knowing how much pride that jawing caused so many ignorant fans to have.... just made me smile to see him standing there on the bad side of 49-9.

Hook'em and Happy Thanksgiving!  BCS Bound!

Burnt Orange Nation Big 12

Right now the Big 12 has 5 teams in the top 14 in the Coaches' poll, and the top 13 in the AP poll.

Oklahoma

Missou

Texas

Texas Tech

Kansas

The soonest any of these teams play each other is in 5 weeks on Oct 11 when Texas plays OU.  That is 4 more games.  There is a significant chance that none of those teams loses a game between now and then.  What are the odds that we have 5 of the top 10 teams at that point?  And is it me, or is nobody talking about this?

I didn't notice it in the preseason poll, so maybe it is just because it surprised me that I am writing about it, but I am pretty impressed that after years of Texas, OU, and the 10 nobody's ESPN used to always say.... that now we are that close to having half of the 10 best teams in college football, or at least so ranked.

Thoughts?

Burnt Orange Nation Olympic Expectations

I know the upcoming football season is causing mouths to foam with anticipation (Just look at the fanpost list), but don't forget the Olympics begin in a few days and there are many Longhorns competing.

I know the swim teams are loaded, but according to Sports Illustrated, Texas is I think the 2nd most represented State behind California, and UT the 4th or 5th most represented university (pretty sure Stanford, UCLA, USC up there as well).  So other sports are obviously well represented.

Here is a link about the Men's swimmers including 4 alum's going for records and medals, a couple of current swimmers happy to have a shot at some relays, and a future swimmer (transfer) who beat out his training partner for a spot.  Texas has 7 swimmers going (next is USC with 4) and 1 diver.  If this year's recruiting class is any indication, we could be back here again in 4 years!

For me, as a former swimmer, the only thing that comes close to topping football season is the olympics.  Thats part of why I love this school.  Hook'em all the way to Beijing.....

Burnt Orange Nation Longhorns at Trials

This is just simply amazing.  I know, by and large, the average reader of this site is not as big a swimming fan as I am, even when they do have longhorns on their caps, but you just have to appreciate the massivenes of the squad the University of Texas is sending to the Olympic Trials this year.

Several of the guys have qualified already.  There are also a couple who will qualify, but have not been officially named part of the team yet because of procedure.

I was about 12 years old the first time I recall seeing the Olympic Trials qualifying time in my best event, and I spent the next 10 years of my life training with that as my dream goal..... just to qualify!  It is incredibly special and 35 is just an amazing number.

Anyway, if you get a chance, check out the trials and root for our boys.... and more than a few girls too!

See ya BON!

Burnt Orange Nation Swim Team signs stellar class

While the Mens swimming and Diving team won their own invitational this month, and are right now training to get ready for a dual with defending National Champions Auburn in January, their coaches were signing another great crop of guys to ensure future success.

I have seen two of these guys swim in person, and they are the real deal.  More about them later in the season.

Burnt Orange Nation Blazers/Sonics... How good will they be?

So here is a question.  I don't follow pro sports nearly as closely as I follow college sports, and I consider myself a mild NBA fan at best, but given that the best UT basketball player in history is so involved in this year's upcoming draft I thought I would ask....
