An examination of Daniel Murphy and his lack of power
After watching Mets second baseman Daniel Murphy have another night where he generally showed very little power, his slash line stands at .308/.345/.369. Given that he was a doubles machine last year, I decided to examine his numbers more in depth, to get an understanding as to why he has declined. (These numbers are up to 5/10/12)

Mets may use Jenrry Mejia in Pelfrey's spot soon
Batista can hold down Mike Pelfrey’s old spot if he pitches effectively, but the Mets actually have an old friend in mind as a possible alternative -- Jenrry Mejia, who underwent Tommy John surgery last May.
"A lot of people might forget about Mejia," said one high-ranking team official. "But he
is progressing very well, and he could be in position to make a start for us before long."
This doesn't seem very smart
Tonight's lineup
SS Tejada
2B Murphy
3B Wright

Yankees sign Hiroki Kuroda to one year deal
What a night for the Yankees
Mets are one of finalists for Mark Buehrle
Probably not going to happen, but interesting nonetheless
Update: Per Adam Rubin, when asked if the Mets would be pursuing a pricey starting pitcher, Sandy Alderson LOL-ed and said no way. When asked who might've started that rumor, he replied, "Probably vampires or something."
Rangers sign Joe Nathan
One closer bites the dust
Marlins radio host: Reyes "almost done deal"
Not sure how much validity this has, but the signs aren't good.
AAOP: A Brave New World
Every Met fan out there has some form of emotional connection to Jose Reyes. This isn't a shock, since he's been a Met since he was 19, eight years ago. The fact that he's been an awesome player during that time hasn't hurt either.
However, he's now a free agent, and given the Mets payroll uncertainty, there's great uncertainty as to whether he'll be back or not.
Emotional attachments aside, this needs to be looked at rationally.
1. The Mets payroll is going to plunge this offseason
2. Ticket sales plunged
3. If Reyes is signed, the Mets will have no payroll flexibility until at least 2014.
4. This current Mets team isn't very good
That last point is not a slight against Reyes, but it does raise a point: should a team put a sixth of it's payroll into a player if the team itself isn't very good and if that player's deal prevents the team from improving other parts? I say NO.
We've seen what emotional attachments to players can do to teams like the Blue Jays and Twins. Reyes is obviously different from Mauer or Wells, but the point remains the same.
For the Mets,

Thus, my AAOP will deal with the Mets in 2012, in a world without Jose, and how, they can compete.

Mets to miss Halladay AND Lee this weekend
Dickey vs Worley Fri., Niese vs. Hamels Sat., Pelfrey vs Kendrick.
Mets eyeing July 22nd return for Wright, Reyes
That game is in Florida, and the start of a 10 game road trip.
Rubin also says there's a good chance Ike will not need season-ending surgery.
Nolan Ryan downplays interest, doesn't consider Beltran, K-Rod upgrades
"I don't see that's an upgrade" to the Rangers' bullpen, Ryan said. "And Beltran, you worry about his knee. And you're taking on an awful lot of salary."
Texas: 27th in MLB in bullpen ERA
Nelson Cruz OBP: .294 Carlos Beltran OBP: .372

Ike Davis might need surgery, likely to miss rest of year
Rock bottom...still haven't reached it.
Jose Reyes may switch to Scott Boras
If this happens, I think any chance of resigning him goes out the window.
Brian Sabean would be happy if Cousins never played in majors again
Here's some of what Sabean said.
"Why not be hard nosed?" Sabean said. "If I never hear from Cousins again or he never plays another game in the big leagues, I think we’ll all be happy."
Jose Reyes put on bereavement list
"Jose Reyes' grandmother has passed away. He will be away 3-7 days."
David Wright's parents love him
"Mets' Wright: "My parents texted me and told me I was their superstar."
NY Times: Fred Wilpon Goes Mongo During Game
Taken during the Mets 4-3 loss to Houston on April 20
Some highlights:
"On Jose Reyes, the often-injured shortstop with an expiring contract: "He thinks he’s going to get Carl Crawford money. He’s had everything wrong with him. He won’t get it."
On David Wright, the centerpiece third baseman: "A really good kid. A very good player. Not a superstar."
On Carlos Beltran, who starred for Houston in the 2004 playoffs before signing a seven-year, $119 million deal with the Mets: We had some dummy in New York, Wilpon says, referring to himself, "who paid him based on that one series. He’s 65 to 70 percent of what he was."

Adam Rubin: Things will only get worse
From ESPN.com.
Here's a snippet:
"Are the Mets prepared to reinvest money from expiring contracts next offseason -- expiring contracts that potentially total $62.5 million from five players alone? It does not seem so.
The New York Post reported Saturday that two of three minority-investor finalists have pulled out. The remaining finalist reportedly wants to buy up Mets debt from banks too, which the Wilpon family does not appear interested in entertaining. After all, that could force the Wilpons out entirely if financial woes continue and the minority partner calls those loans.
Instead, when this year's contracts for Beltran ($18.5 million), Francisco Rodriguez ($15 million, including the buyout if the contract doesn't vest), Oliver Perez ($12 million), Reyes ($11 million) and Luis Castillo ($6 million) expire, it is entirely possible the Mets only reinvest a fraction, making next year's edition of the Mets potentially worse than this year's squad"
Jon Heyman really, really hates Luis Castillo
From Heyman's twitter:
"luis castillo has now annoyed 2 managers in 1 spring over his arrival time. and his 10-day tryout is down to 9. #goodjob"
"@petro03 me, charlie and collins. and oh yes, manuel and randolph despised him as well. i like him better than any mets manager does btw"
I am baffled by how this guy still has a job
NY Post: Mets seek ANOTHER loan
Now, I'm no expert in economics...but there's possible way the Wilpons can keep the team at this point, is there?
