If you haven't heard about the choices made by Bill Belichick in the waining minutes of last Monday night's game between the Pats and Colts, welcome back to Earth. For everyone else, I'm sorry to burden you with another story on the subject. The decisions he made scream of process vs. results and there subsequent analysis.

via assets.sbnation.com

When I saw the highlights on Monday morning, my first thought was that "The Hoodie" would be ripped for this good decision. If you don't agree it was a good decision, read this. For years he is hailed as a mad genious who has found a way to beat the system, but one bad result ending in a loss, and he is suddenly an idiot. The loss by the Patriots Monday night was the result of a "bad break", not "poetic justice".

I was inspired to write this based on an article posted on SB Nation site, DRaysBay. It's a short piece and you should check it out, here. The Rays focus on new Sabremetric stats like OPS, FIP, and defensive efficiency, basically because traditional measures like batting average, ERA, and fielding percentage and extremely inaccurate measures of a players ability. That approach has allowed them compete with large market teams, while on a small market budget and take advantage of market inefficiencies.

The point is that we need to embrace measures that are statistically sound and base our opinions and analysis based on those measures. FSUnsensored and TrueCubbie have both provided us with excellent access to those measures and have also done a great job educating readers about more accurate ways to analyze Florida State and their opponents. If you don't understand a measure that is used, check it out. There are usually links. You won't regret it and you will be able to contribute in a more meaningful way. I am excited that Jimbo Fisher has shown a willingness to think outside of conventional wisdom and that he is building this program abound good processes and he is solely focused on immediate results. We have seen where "doing things the way they always have been done" has lead us.

AC says Goodman's charges will likely be dropped.

Andrew Carter posted a story stating that he spoke with Goodman's attorney about the charges. There are several things I find interesting about his piece.

Richard Goodman's lawyer optimistic charges will be dropped

1. We have already gone over this, but it seems ridiculous that that arrest was made in May, based on a line-up that took place in April, approximately 6 months after the incident occurred. None of the witnesses could positively identify the assailant immediately after the event, but somehow after 6 months this girl picks out Goodman without a doubt? Sounds like it took a while to memorize the photos in the football program.

2. Another witness has come forward and identified a fraternity member as the assailant. If this is the case, he obviously wasn't aiming for the victims face since she was a member of the sister sorority. I think this goes to show that whoever threw the chair was not aiming for the girl and she put herself in a dangerous situation and very unfortunately was injured.

3. It sounds like FSUPD just wanted to charge someone so this high profile incident wouldn't go without consequenses. Goodman was the goat. While none of the player should have been involved in the first place. I don;t think anyone involved in the fight on either side is more guilty.

4. The attorney stated he hopes Goodman will be cleared by August practices which is finally some good WR news.

5. Finally, I found it very interesting that Goodman was using a pubic defender. I guess he doesn't have the "resources" of another school that comes to mind. It's nice to know that FSU is handling this the right way and when Goodman is cleared, it would be in the kangaroo court.

Kool-Aid Drinker's Guide to the 2009 Defense

Let's face it, Mickey Andrews did not retire and he is not suddenly going to have a defensive strategy revelation between now and August. Actually, at this point, either one of those situations would hurt our team.

I have decided that's is time to start drinking the Kool-Aid. When the season is over, it will be time to start drooling over potential defensive coordinator and linebacker's coach candidates, but until then I will pulling full-on for our current coaches. We are all aware of the inherent weaknesses in our defensive scheme. While most of us will admit it is not ideal, it does have strengths and we will win some games as a result of it. So get out your frosted mug and pour yourself a half-full glass of that sugary sweet ignorance. We are going to take at the reasons we can expect a better defense in 2009.

via cache.daylife.com

Mickey Andrews is not an idiot. He may be stubborn and past his prime, but at one time he was one of the great innovators of the college game. The defense has dominated practice since JB took over the offense and the team has paid for it at game time. This past spring practice, the defense was dominated by Jimbo's spread offense. It showed us that the pendulum has made it back to the offensive side. Our defense did not suddenly become bad this year. They were just exposed. We can only expect this to continue in the summer and fall. While I don't expect him to change his scheme, I think Mickey will learn from it and make adjustments. The players will also learn from it and make adjustments of their own. Iron sharpens iron, and until last season, the offense only provided Chinese pot metal.

Speaking of our improved offense, this will pay dividends for the defense in games as well. This point is pretty self-explanatory. Jimbo's offense should be on the field longer and score more points. If the Seminoles have the lead, the opposing team won't be repeatedly gashing it through the middle, wasting clock. Our defense will get more rest and play better.

We have a ton of fresh talent on defense, especially in the secondary. It is too early to hail "Addition by Subtraction", even for Kool-Aid drinkers, but there is a lot to be excited about. We will be more talented in several positions and we can't do worse than last year in the secondary. Replacing EB will be impossible, but guys like Nigel Bradham, Markus White, and Patrick Robinson should be able help this year's squad surpass last year's performance.

via assets.sbnation.com

We aren't there yet, but we are getting bigger. Moses McCray, Jaccobi McDaniel, Vince Williams, and Justin Mincey will help plug some of the gaping holes up the middle. Keeping Demonte McAllister at DE is more evidence of a bigger is better strategy prevailing. Size has not come at the expense of athleticism however, which should help us progress without abandoning what made us great in the nineties.

I am drinking he Kool-Aid and I invite you to join me. I will be screaming for more intensity, tenacity, and discipline. I want our defense to be hungry and aggressive. We are what we are and I will relish it. It will be impossible to ignore our weaknesses when teams run the ball down our throat or we fail to cover the tight end, but I will revel in the glory of linebackers chasing the quarterback with reckless abandon and defensive ends blowing up suckas in the backfield. In all likelihood we only have one year left of the Mickey Andrews' era. Forget our staff's incompetencies and embrace the chaos!

Please keep human trash off college football teams! (U. North Carolina)

I understand that a lot of times these kids come from difficult situations, but having sex with a 14-year old while your brother and a friend rob her house is not a lapse in judgement. It is a complete lack of moral character.

Report: Angelo Hadley "set up" 14-year-old girl during burglary

This makes CJ Mizell seem like a choir boy. This type of thing makes me sick. I have no tolerrance for felony arrests. Why is he just now being released from the team? "Angelo Hadley also was arrested April 5 and charged with two counts of lewd and lascivious battery with the 14-year-old girl, then was released on $15,000 bail. " Was there still a glimmer of hope that he could plea out and make it up to UNC in time for summer workouts?

I only hope Jimbo and staff will be able to sniff out these types of kids before they are tied to the University and are offered the priveledge of a college scholarship. I don't care if our talent pool suffers, there are plenty on guys out there with skills and character. Just ask Warrick Dunn and Derrick Brooks. I am not talking about a kid getting into a fight or underage drinking, but serious offenders. Any felony arrests (Willie Downs) seriously concern me. You can't make broad strokes of judgement based on a sigle arrest, but it should be a big red flag. We don't need human trash that will probably not last more than 2 years anyway. Guys like Angelo Hadley need to be kept off the streets, let alone, college campuses.

Talk about a super utility player. Facing two batters and getting two K's is pretty good for a catcher. Granted they were playing Savannah State. It is a pretty neat accomplishment considering the players that have come out of FSU. J.D and Stephen Drew are a couple recent examples.
