MMA vs. Pro Wrestling: Part One
Right now, MMA and pro wrestling are locked in a head-to-head war for PPV viewers, national coverage, and television advertiser dollars.
The MMA world is based on real action, while pro wrestling is based on entertainment - no matter what the tagline is, it's "sports entertainment!"
MMA is on fire right now, with national coverage on television (ESPN) and in print (USA Today) as well as local media interest.
In 2008, more PPV orders were placed for MMA events than pro wrestling. Granted, 95% of those were UFC events, but it goes to show - real is in, fake is out. The UFC continues to give us a PPV product that is unpredictable, with naturally evolving storylines and real action with real results. Pro Wrestling - which is now mainly WWE, but also smaller promotions like TNA and Ring of Honor - continues to put on three PPVs which attract hundreds of thousands each month.
Wrestling is more about the personae, the writing of the storylines, and who the promoter likes at that time. Pro wrestling will always mirror MMA in some way, whether in fan base, action, or overall production value.
Right now, the hottest MMA star is a former pro wrestler in UFC champion Brock Lensar. In two weeks, a pair of former WWE wrestlers in Ken Shamrock & Bobby Lashley will fight. Kurt Angle of TNA wrestling was believed to be going with the UFC (as well as several other promotions) at one time. He continues to express his desire to enter MMA.
The UFC is the king of the MMA landscape. Granted, there are other companies out there (like Strikeforce and Affliction) who are looking to change that. UFC President Dana White is looked upon in the MMA community by some as the man that gave MMA new life. He's also seen as a tough businessman when it comes to fighter contracts and ad sponsorships when it comes to the UFC's competitors - and for uttering f-bombs at the drop of a hat. No matter what, the guys at Affliction, Strikeforce and HDNet should be thanking him for allowing them to eat from his table.
Pro wrestling, on the other hand, is run by one man. That man is, and has been, Vince McMahon. Right now WWE is putting together its biggest show of the year, WrestleMania. Every year, the company's trademark event draws thousands of fans to the city which hosts it - it's the SuperBowl weekend of pro wrestling. The show gets close to one million PPV buys every year.
Right now, MMA and pro wrestling are kings of the PPV world. This fact makes boxing feel on the ropes when the MMA question is brought up.
