Behind enemy lines
I infiltrated Angels territory yesterday and did some snooping on what kind of deal San Diego could possibly get done with them. Based on what I saw, I have one message for Kevin Towers.
Get this shiz done.
If Tony Reagins and Arte Moreno are in a mindset that is at all anywhere in the general area of the fans, an Angels deal feels leagues above any previously rumored option.
To start, Anaheim's (they'll always be Anaheim in my book) system seems deeper than Chicago's and Atlanta's. There's a top starting pitcihng prospect who fans seemed not only willing but inclined to give up (Adenhart), at least two infield prospects who can play shortstop and who project as solid MLB starters (Wood, Aybar), an expendable reliever prospect (Jepsen), plus good young major league starters who most of the fanbase feel are fair game in Peavy trade talks (Weaver, Saunders).
Some packages thrown around on the threads over there:
- Jered Weaver SP, Jepsen RP, Erick Aybar SS, Willits LF
- Weaver, Nick Adenhart SP, Jepsen, Aybar
- Joe Saunders, an All Star last year, was even tossed around
- So was MLB stolen base leader Chone Figgins
The Angels, their fanbase anyway, seem a lot more excited and a lot more leniant with Peavy. Everything being mulled around by the fans is a heck of a lot better than the 17 team, 832 for 1 packages with Chicago or the Escobar, Hernandez, a couple shares of Chrysler and Britney Spears's new CD deal with the Braves.
Towers. Jump on this.
The Padres like their chances of getting Orioles left-hander Garrett Olson in a side deal for Cubs reserve center fielder Felix Pie.
The Padres also have looked into getting Cubs second baseman Mark DeRosa and sending him to the Phillies...
Towers said a Peavy trade could bring the Padres a shortstop, and the Cubs have offered reserve Ronny Cedeno...
The Padres like their chances of getting Cubs reliever Kevin Hart and have asked about Cubs relievers Michael Wuertz and Angel Guzman.
