OT: Self Inflicted Wounds
Read the article linked below. Unfortunately, the off the field bad news continues. Regardless of what some want to believe, there is a contingent of our fan base who have lost perspective, and are now rooting for us to fail. As the article proves, not only do these misguided "fans" want the football program to fail, but they are also attacking our very school. Tier One is such an important endeavor for all Tech grads, and it is simply criminal that Tech alums would undermine those efforts because of coaching change.
As if our handling of the Leach firing was not embarrassing enough, we now have our own alums throwing gasoline on the fire. I am just ready for this all to end. Our school deserves better than what it got in December of 2009, and it deserves better than these vindicitve lunatics.
2ND Spring Scrimmage Report
I was on the sideline for the second Spring Scrimmage to take photos, but got to actually watch the scrimmage when Tech decided to cut off photography during the actual scrimmage. Here is what I saw:
Offensive Line: We struggled here all day, and struggled here in the last scrimmage. Snaps with Gallington are getting better, but still not indicative of a starting center in the Big 12. Second team snaps were worse with Morales, and he heard about it from Coach brown. Doege was under pressure most of practice, and his timing was thus off most of practice. Some of this is due to improved D-Line play and intensity, but some was just O-Line getting beat. My favorite quote in this regard was Coach Brown to one of the Morales brothers: "you can't protect the QB because you are tired.....you hear that everyone, he can't block because his is tired....your tired because your overweight."
Needless to say, the O-Line struggles aren't going un-noticed. From what I can tell, O-Line play is the biggest reason for our offensive struggles this Spring. That said, replacing three starters, and having 2 or 3 weeks with your new O-Line coach probably has a a lot to do with it. My expectation is that a complete spring, off season, and Fall ball will solve most of this. My optimism comes from the fact that despite the inexperience, and new coach.....the line is noticeably more athletic and moves better than last years line.
QBs: Doege struggled with timing due to pass rush, as well as faster receivers. Its early, and Doege has a crop of wideouts that are much faster than he is use to...they are in different spots on routes, and it shows. Also, every day the WR lineup has been different due to little nagging injuries. So bad O-line play, and unfamiliar targets are leading to a lack luster start to spring.
Brewer is coming along, and certainly is not allowing Doege to be comfortable. That said, Brewer is still not able to run the "up tempo" version of our offense. The faster the plays comes in, the longer Brewer takes to make his reads and snap the ball. The result is delay of game penalties or just frustration on behalf the coaches. Heard coach Brown say to Doege, "see how long it takes Brewer to get the play off"? Brewer is the future, but is still not ready.
WRs: Nothing but good news here. Tyson Williams is a beast both blocking and catching, very physical, lots of mouth. Moore is looking more like himself, no pun. Bell has a nagging injury but is super fast made some nice catches, and has awesome dreds. Amaro is unstoppable over the Middle, a complete mismatch for any line backer or d-back, great hands, no fear over the middle. He will be in the NFL after another season. Javares and Grant are both smurf types, but all-world fast. These two still make rookie mistakes getting lined-up, but basically uncoverable in the slot. Derek Edwards plays with attitude, blocks well, and is making some great catches. Marquez has not missed a beat from last year, very athletic and fast on the outside, needs to work on blocking for sideline screens. He let Williams get blown up by Neboh yesterday because of an "O'le" block. That and Neboh made a nice play which was encouraging.
RBs: I think Kenny must feel the heat from Daniels. Both talk after practice like its a friendly competition, but both are simply running downhill.....and running ANGRY. Its like they are looking for DBs to run over. Kenny's fumble came only after he was dragging half the defense, looking for extra yards. Just mean spirited, smash mouth running that I hope looks as good against the competition. There is really no drop off with Sadale who was noticeably frustrated when he was taken out at the goaline yesterday. He wants his snaps to prove he belongs. Also, the full-back Ontiveros had an awesome catch out of the back field that he took for about 25 yards. It was a nice check down by Doege, and physical run after the catch by the full back.
Offense: From what I see we have improved in every aspect of our offensive game save the O-Line. We all new that would be a struggle, replacing 3 starters, and the new coach doesn't help. We will watch how this progresses, we are only 6 practices in. Outside of that, we are better, stronger, faster at almost all skill positions, and there is nothing to indicate that we are becoming an average offense.
Linebackers: Everyone knows about number 50, Smith. The fact is he and Cobb, and Sam look like a real Big 12 corps, and may take what was one of biggest weaknesses last year and turn them into a team strength. Look great against the pass, getting better against the run. As good as our RBs looked at running the ball with physicality....the LBs didn't let them break but one large run.
DBs: Neboh and Corn are in the hip pocket of Moore and Williams. Every play is a battle back and forth that results in a physical/contested catch or an int/break up. Then the jawing starts, and sometimes a pushing match. These two corners are playing mean and really look good in man coverage. A noticeable improvement. I haven't noticed much from the safeties except for a good open field tackle on Ronnie by Johnson yesterday. The fact is this is most experienced part of the D, and when Porter is fully healthy, this will be the last of our worries.
DLine: We are getting a lot of pressure on the QBs. Some is better line play, but some is weakness on the O-Line. I like the way the interior of the line looks, but I am wondering why Mackey is not getting to the QB more. He knows he has one season to get to the next level, so I expect more. The other pass rushers look better everyday and get to the QB often.
Defense: I am making a concerted effort not to get my hopes up, but it is hard. You can tell by Tub's comments that he is surprised by their progress and so am I . They simply look like a new squad. I could point to a myriad of things, but the most impressive to me can be summed up in two words.....gang tackling. For the first time in years we are swarming to the ball, and team tackling. If we win 7 or 8 games, this defense will be the reason why, and almost all of them will be back next season.

Can you hear that boys? That's the slow whine of the an Air Raid siren, starting to churn. Can you feel that? That's the cool chill as batteries and tortillas are being removed from the freezer. Can you smell that? That is the smell of every sheep in Lubbock County shitting themselves in fear at the prospect of Aggie coming to town. For the next 48 hours it's time to grab your pirate flags or neck-ties, and the darkest black shirt money can buy. Get your minds right bitches. It's time for the GAMEDAY VIDEO!!!!

Proud day to be a Raider
Today we can celebrate the single most positive day in our program since our victory over UT two years ago. Congratulations to our staff, players and commits for building our first top 20 recruiting class, and the finest in our history. Today's achievemnt stands in stark contrast to the misinformation spread by Aggie, Whorn, and other pirate affiliated facebook groups. Apparently you CAN recruit to Lubbock, TX. Here is to a future of doing more with more. Wreck 'em Tech.
Aggie 247 Website reporting 4Star RB, and Tech commit Kenny Williams has now decommited from Tech, and committed to the Aggies. This after hosting two in home visits from Tech coaches and swearing he will sign with Tech, and telling future teamste Jace Amaro on Thursday via text, "I'm 100% Tech".
Recruit Detective: Silent Visitors?
Its a slow TTU news cycle, so lets have some recruiting fun. The word on the street is we had a couple of "silent" recruit visitors this weekend. This rumor may gain steam today after our 4 Star WR commit Derrick Edwards posted on the Face Book page of one Curtis Grant, a 5 star Linebacker from Richmond Virginia. Here is the post: "Make sure your putting on a Tech hat at the game lol! Good luck at the game bro" So how does Derrick know a random line backer from Virginia, who he has obvious discussed Tech recruitment? I told you all that I was told by a Tech coach on a flight, that signing day surprises were coming, and on signing day "we will all be proud to wear red and black". Food for thought. Look up Curtis Grant on Rivals for some dream fodder.
LEACH: NOT A GOPHER
According to the article, after openly campaigning for the job, Mike Leach was passed over for the Minn Gophers HC job. This was the team that fired it's head coach after Leach orchestrated the biggest come back in bowl history against them. This represents yet another disappointment in the aggresive job hunt for Coach Leach going back to 2004, and is no doubt puzzling to him given the fact that he quote "revolutionized football". It's highly likely that coach will use these repeated denials to support his claim that his firing from tech has illegally harmed his ability to find gainfull employment. However, this may be difficult to prove given his inability to secure a better job in his many attempts while he was still employed at Texas Tech.
Leach Talks Championships
Appearently it's contagious. Leach wants the U job, and talks winning ACC Championships. If he starts wearing ties, we can really start hating him!
Level: SHEFFIELD IS STARTING
Well there you go, Sticks gets his chance!
IF YOU WANT ONE LAST REASON FOR HOPE
I saw this argument posted elsewhere and thought it would make a fitting final sunshine pump for the 2010 season. If you have any interest at all in finding a reason to be hopeful going into to tomorrow's game, keep reading.
Ask your self this: Why is our schedule weird this year? It's because the UT game was moved, thus splitting our non-conference pillow-fight games between the beginning and end of our season. Now ask yourself what did a normal season looked like for the last decade? The answer: 4 non-con patsies to start the season 4 and 0, or 4 and 1. Normally we win those easy games, and we have this year as well. had the season started like it has most years with SMU, Houston, Weber State, and NM to start, we would have started conference play 4-0, and been 5-3 up to this point. Sure we would still be pissed about the bad loss to Iowa State, but we are pissed about the bad conference lost every year. This is why this year feels worse! We are used to having 5 wins by now. But thats a function of the schedule, not anything else. If we were 5-3 there would be no panic. So count Weber St and Houston wins, understand that we are 5-3, and if we pull it together late as a team learning usually does, we can still make a season and a decent bowl.
Of course this all goes off a cliff if we lose two or three more times, but today, Friday before the CU game.......there is in fact a logical reason for hope.
Good luck Seniors, go do what Kingsbury, Harrell, Crabtree, and others could never do.........go beat the Buffs at home.

AGGIES: WORST RECRUITING CLASS IN 20 YEARS
If you think it's tough to be a Red Raider right now, try being an Aggie. They are on the ledge of posting their worst recruiting class in 20 years, and it appears from highschool coaches comments, their decade of mediocrity is finally catching up with them. As a Tech fan, there is a clear warning here, and a reason for hope. On the hope side, if you compare Tech and A&M, you see two teams in transition, and their records reflect that. But Tech has a top 15 recruiting class and A&M has fallen off the map. A case could be made that if we survive this transition, the future is bright. On the other hand this is also a warning. If we botch this transition, say over the next 3 years, Tech could be A&M 10 years from now.
Here is the link to the article that spells all this out.

The New Texas Tech Club: A Review
Hey guys, in the process of joining the club, I ate lunch for the first time at the new Texas Tech Club today. I thought I would pass along my thoughts. The club is located at Club Level in the new East Side expansion. In the end I was very impressed. Beautiful facility, awesome views of campus and the field, great buffet, and the service was the best I have had in Lubbock. Membership was very reasonable, and I would highly recommend that anyone living in West Texas, or in town a lot, take a serious look at it. Its a ClubCorp property, so for those that travel, you get the usual residuals at all the ClubCorp Country Clubs and Business Clubs.
For your amusement I will also add that Coach Tuberville was present while I was there.........in a suit an tie of course.

Tech's In-State Recruiting History
If you look on the left side of the page, and go through each year of Tech's recruiting since 1989 you will see a couple of fun facts. First being, and surprisingly, 1997 was Tech Football's best in-state recruiting year since 1989. Second place was 2009, which makes sense after our 2008 season. Ahhhhh 1997, the year I started at Tech (and met my bride), I had Derrick Dorris in a class........two brain cells.....max.

PLAYERS GETTING A FREE PASS
I spent some time this afternoon reading through this weeks fan posts and comments regarding last weeks debacle against UT. We all agree we should have won, the offense was horrible, the defensive looks better, and I think we all agree that at the end of the day it is the coaches responsibility to get their perspective players ready to play. But any who have coached, played, or have kids who play, also know that coaching only goes so far. In the end the kids have to go out and execute the game plan. With the exception of the Potts criticism, and some blanket O-Line statements, all of the ire from this weeks loss is being placed firmly at the feet of the coaching staff, and in most cases, the head coach himself. But is that fair? Put aside the cliche for a second that the buck stops with the head coach, isn't it possible we have more of an execution issue than a coaching issue? After all, London Raider provided us with the stats to prove that in fact Neal Brown is trying to run the AirRaid offense. The same O-line coach is still around trying to implement an spread O-Line scheme. So why isn't it working?
Consider these plays:
1) After Defense stifles UT and forces three and out, our center snaps the ball over Pott's head, UT recovers near the goal line, result is 7 unearned points. In this case the center is certainly at fault, and some have argued Pott's should have gotten to the ball quicker, but a coaching issue? Nope.
2) After offense puts together a nice drive, moving the ball well, to get into the UT redzone, Pott's throws an interception. The result, a UT field goal. Bad play calling? The drive was going well. Just bad execution by the QB.
3) After the refs miss a call on the incomplete pass called complete, the defense stops UT again on downs, only to be reversed by the infamous Will Ford taunting penalty. Result, another 7 UT points. Bad coaching? Not a chance. The coaching staff have proved their emphasis on reducing penalties by cutting them in half through the first 3 weeks. This is nothing more than one individual playing too aggressively at the wrong time in the game.
If your doing the quick math, thats 17 points that had zero to do with gameplan, play calling, or coaching. These 17 points were given up by lack of execution by players. Not to mention that Potts' interception erased Tech points as well. At the very least the score should have been 14-7 in favor of the Tech if these three plays were executed as they were coached. If we score instead of throwing that pick in our red zone it looks more like 21-7 Tech.
I know some of you won't/can't look at the game from this perspective, but the facts are there. The coaching staff didn't lose this game, the players did. I agree that the play calling was vanilla on offense, but that should have only kept this from being a blow out in our favor. You can see that even with the boring calls by Brown, we should have won by 14. We have an execution problem ladies and gents, and if the players continue to fail to execute, it won't matter who the coach is.
Some Perspective
Some of you working in finance may be aware of JP Morgan's Market Insight Series, including the "Lil Book". The book is a quarterly piece of intellectual capital that contains nearly every data point useful in discussing the markets and the economy. One of my favorite slides lately touches on the impact of politics on the markets and GDP. One chart in particular shows the historical voting trends within the house and senate, specifically pointing out that the last time that our politicians voted so blindly for their own party was immediately after the Civil War during reformation. So essentially Washington, and by extension voters, is as polarized as we were when the country split in half and slavery was on the table. And so goes society, and so goes the blogosphere.
Knowing that to be true, I know full well that half of you will not be able to read my breakdown of the game through any other prism than "TTUMAR stand for this, I stand for that, it's fingers in the ears time." Regardless, I'm going to do my part try and add balanced content and specifically this week, make a case for why the sky is not falling, the data and our record does not support the calls for Brown's, or Tub's or Willi's head, and in the end I will argue that if anything, we know just as much about our 2009 team, as we do about our 2010 team. So pull up a chair, the numbers don't lie, so try to be objective and if step back from the ledge for your dose of sunshine.
The following data will compare 2009 and 2010 offensive and defensive production numbers and off to the side I will indicate which team had the better number per line item, all up to this point in the season.

Most Important Statistic For Winning Championships
2009 2010 Winner

One more stat to mention is that our opponents for the first three games of this year, finished with the identical records of the first three opponents for last year, in 2009. So the competition quality is identical in that respect.
I would also add that stats are not everything, and the case I am making is based on not only the data, but the fact that I watched all three games, two in person.
My balanced assessment clearly shows that a strong case could be made that the production of the entire team is nearly identical as it was overall to last years team. We are noticeably weaker in some key areas, but also stronger in just as many key areas. In fact the notion that the offense is some how drastically different than the product on the field last year, in terms of the whole picture, simply doesn't appear to be true. Meanwhile, an area most of us feel better about, the defense, is in fact the area where it looks like we have given up ground. I think this goes back to what some of said about the numbers of the defense not being as good, but the style of play is more to our liking.
The case for sleeping at night:
Offensively we are just barely underscoring last years squad (5 point difference), we are better on 3rd down which was a huge concern last year, and we are running the ball better. Defensively we are stopping more times on 3rd down which was a huge concern last year, we are forcing more than twice as many turnovers, and more than three times as many interceptions. We are giving up more points, and passing yards than last year, but it makes sense to take into to account that both SMU and NM are passing first teams compared to Rice and North Dakota from last year. Turnovers are a huge improvement, although recent penalties are untimely, we have committed nearly half as many as last year at this time. Lastly, we have the same record, and for good reason. The numbers don't lie, we are producing nearly identical production (albeit from different places), against teams with identical records, with nearly the identical personnel as we had on the field in 2009.
You have to ask yourself what was your expectation coming into the season. On the pessimist side I read that given the team we are returning, there should be no drop off in wins.....but many felt there would be. Guess what? There has been no drop off in wins against identical competition, up to this point.
I'm not arguing that we should not tear apart the game and critique. To Seth's point, fair, balanced, deconstruction is what DTN is about. But I would argue that nothing in the the data, or the outcome supports any of the Macro concepts some have proposed here. Based on this information, how can any of us proclaim one coach a bad hire, or a season lost, or any other big picture theme unless you can go back and document that you held that exact same belief this time last year? If 2010's production and results warrant firings, and season lost discussion than by that logic we should have also cleaned house and fired the staff after the UT game last year, and proclaimed that season last as well. Funny thing is, don't remember anyone doing that. What is happening, is those who never intend to give the team a chance are taking any opportunity to seize on everyones disappointment. In what world is it ok to proclaim a first year HC, DC, or OC a failure in week three? In what world does logic dictate that having the same record against identical competition mean that this staff has lost the season, but last years staff had it all figured out? We all knew that we should do as well as last year with what we had coming back, and hoped we would do perhaps do better. So far, we are doing just as good in the only category that determines championships....wins. All we have to do is beat ISU in two weeks to take the first steps towards beating our record last year up to that point, does that sound terribly difficult? I think not. Its highly likely that by this time two weeks from now that we will have comparable stats to 2009, just as we do now, with a better record after 4 weeks of play......and thats something to be hopeful about. I am just as pissed about our failings on Saturday as I was by the same 10 point loss margin we suffered to UT last year. But the loss doesn't mean anything more than it means.....we have yet to improve overall, but we yet to degrade overall......and that my friends is already a victory over what the "experts" had predicted coming into the season. Cut the coaches and players no slack, but it means on what it means, and nothing more......until it does. =)

HOIST THE COLORS!
If ye be reading this tale, then me gone to meet me maker. Me bones be buried in the dunes, me soul crushed among the breakers.
The hour of reckoning be close at hand, their inhuman snarls pierce the clouds. A river of blood be flowing now, the screams of me crew grow loud.
On tis parchment in haste, tis story must be told. In my final moments now, a dire warning me cannot withhold.
How did it come to this me ask? Victory seemed to be in arrrr reach. What a horrible fate before us now, dead and dying on this beach.
The story starts with a ship, and it’s pirate crew. Legendary were they, weaknesses they had few.
For a decade they sailed, making enemies far and wide. Many victories they claimed, many souls they sent to the tides.
At their helm was a man, or better yet a ghoul. An offensive genius was he, many a enemy he made a fool.
His sword skills were legend, and jagged was his blade. His cannon fire deadly, so violent was his air raid.
But as the story goes, his legend came to an end. Missteps, lies, and arrogance….failed by mutinous friends.
To the joyous cheers of his enemies, his ship it did go down. Mysteriously though we searched.....later no trace of it was found.
In the clear were we, now unimpeded we could sail. The fearsome pirates now gone, we were sure to prevail.
But then on the seas strange stories did appear. Tales of fog, missing vessels, and a growing, chilling fear.
Whispers of sightings, the fear delayed many trips. For now we were certain, on the seas sailed a ghost ship!
So a choice we made, me and me crew. To sail straight at’em, before their strength grew.
Catch this vessel by surprise, that was our plan. Run and shoot them back to hell, stop the nightmare before it began.
Off the coast of Lubbock Key, that’s where we met this ghost. Surrounded by fog not of this world, we met our waiting host.
Oh what an error, what an ill fated trip. For sailing towards us now was NO SINGLE GHOSTLY SHIP. In an instance the fog lifted and our faces white as sheets. For speeding in haste towards us now, the thousand sails of a demon FLEET!
Never before had I seen such a horde. Must have been 60,000 and a new commander on board.
Ship after ship with revenge at their core, we turned as quickly as possible and headed to shore.
How quickly they chased, they maneuvered with such skill. Clear it became that speed indeed kills.
We made it ashore, using the dunes as cover. We ready our weapons and prayed with one another.
To our dismay, the fog reappeared. Masking their approach, and crippling my crew with fear.
Silence then rushed, over the beach, as we waited for our fate victory now within their reach.
But the silence did not last and hellish snarls filled our ears. Then as they emerged, our wide eyes filled with tears.
These were no ghosts, but red eyed demons cloaked in black. How could there be so many, how were they able to come back?
Then it began, our final death throws. The demons now issuing their crippling death blows.
A massacre like this no one could have foretold. My entire crew of sailors left mutilated and cold.
The last thing I saw before turning to flee, was their new commander down on one knee. Lying beneath him was my dying first mate. His face trembling in fear and sealed was his fate.
Face to face he was now with devil in charge. An evil grin, a neck-tie, and a confidence loomed large.
He bent down to my friend, and issued one final word. A warning I share now that I hope is heard.
He said " I am the Commander Tubs, and this is my fleet. A renewed horde of death dealers who will bring this world to their feet. Let it be known far and wide, you have a new invader. Tell them we are pirates no more, you must now answer to the RED RAIDERS!"
I escaped for a moment, but not as a coward. I had to issue word of this new evil power. I have only a moment, they have found where I hide. I must finish this warning, and sacrifice my soul to the tide. But if you read this, the burden is now yours. You must warn the other 8 vessels to never sail these shores. For our future is bleak, but perfectly clear….we don’t stand a chance the RED RAIDERS ARE HERE!
Sincerely,
Sir June Jones

Tuberville noted several times that Sheffield would play this season depending on the situation -- what opposing defenses are giving them, etc.
POTTS: PRACTICE QB?
I had the pleasure of reading an awesome post on RRS this morning that I wanted to summarize and pass along to the DTN faithful. Let me preface by saying my gut told me Sticks was going to win this job. Let me further say, that despite my poor prediction, I am not surprised or overly worried that Potts is taking the helm against SMU. Part of my confidence comes from the fact that POTTS IS NOT, AND NEVER WAS........a practice QB.
Much has been made here and elsewhere about Potts being chosen by now two different staffs because "he looks good in practice", but that once the game time speed and rush comes, he folds like a a cheap lawn chair under KWASHBURN. Well folks, a quick look back at Spring Practice and Fall Camp reports from 2009 prove this myth to be just that....an inconvenient falsehood.
The facts are that Potts struggled throughout 2009's Spring drills, and Sheffield dazzled, including a strong performance at the Spring Game that help catapult Sticks past Seth Doege (the Scholarship QB Leach earmarked to replace Potts). Potts went on to struggle in Fall camp, and as RRS points out, the blogosphere began grumbling that perhaps Sticks was the better QB as early as August 2009. There is zero evidence that Potts' impressive practice skills in 2009 led top his selection by Leach to the starting QB role. In fact, the only QB who was able to use practice performance to catapult themselves into contention was none other than Sticks Sheffield.
Why these facts give me hope. For the first time ever, POTTS IS PRACTICING WELL. So well in fact, that for the first time in two years he looks like the best QB right now based on practice results. Something he could not say a year ago. Garbage in, garbage out. Potts practiced poorly last spring and fall, and that spilled over into the season in 2009. Given that he is practicing at such a high level now, I have no reason to believe that that too will not spill into the 2010 season. Gents contrary to what has been said here over and over, for the first time in 2 years, the QB who had the best practice results will be the starting QB for Tech. I would'nt have guessed it, but congrats Taylor, lead us to the promise land son. Wreck'em Tech.
DOEGE: 2011 QB
I had a chance to catch Tech Talk today, and Level mentioned he just had a conversation with OC Brown about the back-up QBs. It seems Brown feels he has 3 QBs that could lead this team right now. We know the first two, but the 3rd may come as a surprise to some......Seth Doege. It seems Doege is solidly in the 3rd spot according to Brown, and is the front runner to lead the team in 2011. I know there is alot of love for Karam here, and he is no doubt a first class kid. However, just as some of us who saw srping practice saw, he simply missing something at this point. If this trend continues, I think it's likely that our congestion at the QB position will eventually claim Karam as it's first victim.
Also on Tech Talk, we will have the new JumboTron in place for the 2011 season. It is going to be placed in the south endzone, replacing the DoubleT Scoreboard, and the current design being considered would have the screen run the enire length of the end zone making it the largest board in the NCAA.

Furthermore, Tech has made open objections to much of the agreement and has received no response from the conference."
