GTFO Aggie Series: Day 1 - The Opening
There's an old saying, "Always a bridesmaid, never a bride." And what better analogy is there to describe the century plus relationship Texas A&M has had with its long loathed rival in Austin. The two schools just never really meshed. A&M has its Corps of Cadets. UT has its liberal arts/6th street hipsters. A&M is in an outpost, "college", town. UT is in the capital city of the largest of the lower 48 states. A&M claims a baker's dozen less one is the way to field a football squad. UT, well, is The University of Texas.
These differences over time drove a stake right through the heart of Texas. The chasm finally grew so wide that Aggies everywhere were inclined to head for greener pastures. And come July 1 that relationship between long time veritable rivals will split permanently* in terms of athletic conference affiliation. A&M will become a new member of the Southeastern Conference, joining along with the University of Missouri. (*Let's hope so.)
We here at burntorangenation thought it a just and fitting bon voyage to our brethren in Bryan-College Station to commemorate the D-I-V-O-R-C-E with a month long series of essays and various historical recounting of memorable athletic achievements over our Brazos River rivals. So to you, BONizens, we ask to regale us with your stories and takes on the incestuous nature of the rivalry and to freely express thoughts of this vicissitude as and when the moment strikes. Make use of the fanposts and fanshots sections to vent your pent up emotions. Got a joke, share it. Got a family story, share it. This is one last chance to send the Aggies packing with just how we really feel about them.
Texas Longhorn Baseball: "You're Out!"
Crying shame, that's what it is. 1998. That is the last season the Longhorns Men's Baseball team failed to make the NCAA tournament. Simple math calculates that to be 14 years ago. Fourteen straight NCAA tournament appearances. Not a bad streak, as they go.
The Longhorns could not catch a break this year. Between phenom recruits bolting for the majors (er, minors) and a rash of injuries, suspensions, and historical weak bats, the team was not able to pitch their way to the NC2A's.
Head baseball man Augie Garido, and owner of all-time most NCAA wins, met with the media after the committee announced the field. Alan Trubow at Hookem.com ($) memorialized the interview. One Q&A stuck out especially given the lack of traditional post-season success on the 40 Acres in recent years (no offense to women's volley ball / tennis or the swimming program).
How will this change the way you do assessments on players and where the program is?
When this kind of thing happens, first of all we have to check the water system around UT and what’s going in the water because it seems to be contagious. I think you really do have to do a thorough examination of what went wrong and how we got here. This is a championship program. We can’t change that watermark. We’re expected, and rightfully so, to live up to that. We’ve fallen way short. This is a time when you really dig into all of the details and find out what to do to fix it, and that’s one of my main jobs, to be responsible for that. So, I will.
I suppose when it is all said and done, there will always be next season. You hate it for this bunch but in a sense you are always optimistic that given the right combination of talent, the Horns will earn their way back to prominence.
Resident BON Baseball aficionados, 40AS, are on the disabled list today (which is why I'm pinch hitting) but a big ol' hat tip to their tireless coverage of Longhorn baseball. I'm certainly proud to be on their team.
In any event, a new post-season tourney streak starts in 2013.
Until then, hook 'em.
Snap Shots: Where There’s Smoke..There’s Fire Zone
The Fire Zone is a bald face lie. It is deceitful and misleading. In essence, it is a real bitch. - Anonymous
Spring intra-squad games are instructional for one primary reason: To provide an opportunity to simulate game situations and test the progress of personnel. The April 1st Texas vs. Longhorns annual spring scrimmage certainly lived up to that billing and, with the exception of a play here or there, did not offer too much red meat for fans.
However, there was one play in the second period that captured my attention and should capture yours equally.
The Context
After Case McCoy was unsuccessful in leading any meaningful sustained drives against the stout #1 defense, Coach Brown thought it best to give him some reps with the #1 offense. That put leading quarterback David Ash in with the 2-deep offensive personnel. He too found the going tough sledding as the #1 defense (less Kenny Vaccaro) stymied almost every rush and pass attempt thrown at the Diaz defense.
Trailing 21-0 in the 2nd quarter, the Longhorns started a drive at their 17 yard line. First down resulted in a 15 yard pass interference penalty against Byndom, who was pulled by Akina after the error. With the ball now on their 32 yard line, the Longhorns lost a couple of yards on 1st down (a Jeremy Hills hand-off tripped up by gap busting Tank Jackson) immediately followed by a no-gain bubble screen to DeSean Hales on 2nd down (great play by Brandon Moore to sniff it out).
Facing a 3rd and long, Harsin opted for a balanced formation hoping a spread look would open up a few passing lanes. The #1 read appears to be Mike Davis (X) who is facing man coverage against the substitute true-freshman Duke Thomas.
The Play
The defense is set in a Base 4-3 Bronco Cover-2 shell. The coverage would be classified as MOFO (2-high middle of field open) if the H-Back motioned or there was a Y receiver in the slot dragging the FS toward the Field side. For this basic Fire Zone play, Cobbs is the initial domino to fall. Offensively, Harsin would normally motion the running back in this set to the strong side to "spread" the defense. However, as you'll see in the following frames, the call is an easy read for the defense.

WVU Football: Big Things Are Coming
Slick promotional production for West Virginia's inaugural season in the Big 12. I personally think the Big 12 made out like bandits swapping West Virginia and TCU with Missouri and that other school in Bryan-College Station, athletically speaking of course. As for the academic side, well that is a debate for another time.
In any event, the talent stars have aligned for Dana Holgorsen and the Mountaineers who have a chance at making a big splash in 2012. Can't wait to see them line up against top-drawer talent.
2012 Big 12 Football Power Ranking: Spring Camper Assessment
Now that Texas has wrapped up spring camp, and it is months before the Big 12 football season hits a neighborhood gridiron near you, we wanted to kick the tires and take an early peek at a Big 12 Spring Practice 2012 Power Poll. For the second straight season the Big 12 makeup will be new. Gone now are Colorado, Missouri, Nebraska, and Texas A&M. Included for 2012 are the Horned Frogs of Texas Christian University and the West Virginia University Mountaineers.
In addition to the newly minted Big 12 members, graduation and other attrition has changed the dynamic of the power structure not to mention the maturation of young players at perennial top conference programs. Still, the key to the Big 12 is quarterback play and defensive strength. You need strong contenders in both categories to navigate the high-octane waters of this conference.
With that said, below represents our community author's poll results of an early 2012 conference strength ranking. One thing is obvious. We all agree, in spite of the coaching staff turnover and Notre Dame transfer QB Dayne Crist, Kansas will again have difficulty getting off the mat. Also, the middle of the pack is a toss-up given the churn of offensive playmakers outside of the top 3 ranked teams. It is challenging to determine the proper alignment of reigning Big 12 champ OSU along with Baylor given they are basically starting from scratch with new quarterbacks. Finally, maybe not surprising to some, but TCU and WVU are presumed to continue their current success in a brand new "big boy" conference. My guess is we may not have properly considered the certainty of wear and tear a Big 12 schedule will do to these programs and therefore are basing assessments on their performance of late.

Myck Kabongo Set To Announce Future At Texas
UPDATE: Myck Kabongo declares he is returning for his sophomore season. The one-and-done streak is broken!
University of Texas point guard, and All-Big 12 Rookie Team honoree, Myck Kabongo stated earlier today on his twitter feed a 10:00 a.m. CDT announcement is scheduled on the Longhorn Network to disclose his future plans on entering the NBA draft. If Kabongo elects to forgo his still remaining three years of NCAA eligibility it would represent the 3rd year in a row for Rick Barnes' program a guard recruited from the deep talent at Findlay Prep would declare for the NBA draft after only one year of college hoops.
As Peter Bean has written on numerous occasions the attraction of top talent to Texas appears to be acting as an NBA one year placeholder given the turnstile of talent at UT. While the fortunes for those who have benefited from playing for the Longhorns for at least a season are obvious, no less damning to the program's upside has been the too soon departures of this talent.
At peace with my decision and ready to move forward. Will drop by LHN 10 am today to let everyone know.
— Myck Kabongo (@1MK2) March 26, 2012
While we don't know for certain if Myck will declare, it certainly is well within reason to assume he will do so especially given his lack of ties to the region and seemingly what other players from Findlay have elected.
I hope he returns but if not then a big hook 'em to Myck and his future.
Texas Football 2012: Spring Practice Report Day 2
Thanks to the guys at Hookem247.com we get more first hand sourced feedback of Texas Longhorn spring practice. Suffice to say that what started during Holiday Bowl practice has continued with quarterback David Ash firmly entrenching himself as number one on the depth chart. Even though we are very early in his sophomore campaign, it is encouraging nonetheless to hear positive news of Longhorn quarterback play regardless of the merit. Expect more on the front page as additional information is disseminated.
Texas Football 2012: Spring Practice Notes-Opening Day
Grades, grades, grades. Mack Brown announced on Thursday a new accountability system has been implemented. The details are somewhat ambiguous but suffice to say there will now be a record keeping of who is earning their way based on performance both on and off the field.
Just because you had the best effort, doesn't mean you're going to play, because some don't have enough ability to be a great player. But everybody should be able to give their best effort and be exceptional, and that's what we are working toward. And those grades should reflect that today and we haven't given them a grade in the past, so this is a new thing for us that should stimulate some conversation and show them how serious we are, even though I thought the team played hard last year by and large throughout the year.
We'll probably see some quotes from Coaches Diaz, Applewhite, and Harsin later today, as well as the new team leaders, but expect coach/player speak. It will be interesting to read just how much the off season conditioning program prepared players for spring practice as Wylie is a high-riser in the respect arena.

Texas Football 2012: Mack Brown Spring Practice Press Conference Preview
Mack Brown will host the media today to kick off the 2012 spring practice season at 1:00 p.m. local time. As with all of his pressers, you can watch the streaming action live on TexasSports.TV.
The Texas Longhorns Spring Football season is slated to kickoff on Thursday, February 23, and conclude with the 2012 Texas Football Spring Jamboree presented by Time Warner Cable and annual Orange-White Game on Sunday, April 1. In between, two Longhorn practices will be open to the public - Friday, March 2, and Saturday, March 3. Both of those practices will start at 4 p.m. and take place in Darrell K Royal-Texas Memorial Stadium. The Orange-White Game is set to kickoff at 2 p.m. and will be broadcast live on the Longhorn Network. UT will take the field for warmups at approximately 1 p.m. on that day.
Last we heard from Coach Brown was praise of the staff and the 2012 signing class. Depending on which recruiting service you are partial to, Texas finished with arguably their strongest overall class in the last decade. Of course time will tell if the talent can be developed as that has clearly been the Achilles heel of the program the past several seasons especially on offense. We've seen flashes of what the talent can be but not the consistency necessary to climb back to championship level performance.

Big 12 Releases 2012 Football Schedule
The Big 12 released the 2012 football conference schedule on the heels of the Big East formal announcement releasing West Virginia University.
Of note for Texas is the start of conference play will be out of pan and right into the fire with games against OSU, WVU, OU, and Baylor before catching a break against Kansas.
Texas better take advantage of a seemingly weak OOC schedule and carefully manage starter minutes because the conference schedule looks daunting.
Mack Brown - One-On-One with Craig Way
Absolute must listen for the diehard Longhorn football fan. Mack Brown discusses recruiting cycles, complacency, and reload memes.
Dick Tomey's consulting efforts appear to be paying dividends. On several occasions in the past, Coach Brown has mentioned things that Tomey has offered. Multi-position evaluation is one of them.
Interesting commentary on the "Shiro" Davis recruitment. Coach basically says that we were never out of it due to Bo Davis' involvement. Shiro said he was "intrigued" of the pass rush possibilities in Big 12 play due to quarterback skill. Mack Brown compares him to Brian Orakpo.
In other interviews, Shiro stated that a big draw to the Texas program was the fact discussions were about academics and family first. Football was a distant third.
Additionally, you probably have read or heard the direct quotes from Shiro regarding the need to play his decision close to the vest because of SEC, shall we say, shenanigans. This business about criticizing recruits for their school selection borders on the deranged. Those that trade on the social media vulgarity should be horse whipped.
Also, Coach Brown sends a message to Longhorn nation regarding work ethic. "At Texas you can get complacent, even when something is good," he said. "We as coaches have to keep putting pressure on ourselves. We've got to get off to a great start with this next class."
"I want to walk out on the field as a head coach and know our bunch is as intimidating to the other bunch," referring to his understanding the job of identifying, securing, and developing the best talent as head football coach is never finished. "And I want Texas fans to be really proud of what walks out there. I don't want them to duck. I don't want them to say 'we don't look good at this, or that'. I want us to walk into a stadium and represent what Texas Football should represent."
With all due respect coach, just win, baby. Just win.
Texas Football 2012: Mack Brown - National Signing Day Press Conference
Mack Brown will meet the press this afternoon at 3:30 p.m. local time. As with all of his pressers, you can watch the streaming action live on TexasSports.TV.
Dateline - February 6, 2002
On what the program looks for in a recruit ...
"You look at the total picture of a recruit including social life, academics and football. If any of the three break down, then they will probably not be successful. One thing that everyone knows here at The University is that it is a very difficult school academically. One of the tougher things we have found coaching here is that not only do the players have to play great football, but they have to go to class and make their grades. The recruits understand that during the recruiting process. On what having a top-ranked recruiting class means ...
"What you have to realize in college football today is that everybody you play will have great players. I do not believe that this is a step up but a continuation of where we have been. You never know whether a Top 10 recruiting class will remain in the top throughout their college careers."
Ten years have passed since Mack Brown spoke these words. During that span the Longhorn football program has signed top 10 recruiting classes each year and spawned a few outright Big 12 championships, a couple of National Championship appearances, including winning one, a dozen+ All Americans, gobs of wins, heartbreaking losses, and a significant morphing of Mack Brown V.2.0.
Torshiro Davis Spurns LSU & Signs With Texas
In a morning signing ceremony at his high school with family and friends in attendance, Torshiro Davis donned a white ball cap with a prominent, embroidered burnt orange HORNS and announced his commitment to Texas.
Defensive Line coach Bo Davis has been recruiting this highly ranked Shreveport recruit since he was at Alabama. Reports indicated that Torshiro's football coach texted Texas pay site information traders last night but requested secrecy on the pick. Some pay sites leaked the information that the signing day flip was possible.
In the end, Texas is able to shore up a defensive end position with much needed backup given the possible attrition schedule in upcoming seasons.
Congratulations to Torshiro Davis. T.G.O.D.

First, let's congratulate all of the 2012 Texas Longhorn commitments as they gather their pens to ink their LOI's today. This is shaping up to be arguably one of the best overall rated Texas classes in almost a decade.
Note to recruits: The next several months, and your first season or two, are known as probation period. Not a ton of expectations but should you choose to play out of your mind, rest assured internet heathens will work to make you heroes. However, not play to potential and you risk the scathing scorn of a fickle fan base played out on the www for all to see. I apologize in advance grown men and women (mostly the former) act this way but that is just the way it works.
Second, move over GBR, BLT, and GHG90. While we appreciate the untold volume of recruitnik updates you've bestowed upon us (emphasis on volume of appreciation), we're a little sick and tired of your play it straight drivel (soft ankles and supple hips...is that really necessary?). It's now time for the crazy, whacked out, unreasonable Longhorn fan to give it a go at the wheel.
This was supposed to be a DGB lottery open thread but it appears Texas was told late yesterday to move along. Coach Wyatt is to be congratulated for his tireless efforts in working to land the once-in-a-decade potential talent. However, DGB was considered a cherry on top for the 2012 class (although I'm sure we'll debate the what if to death over the coming seasons). Cherries are usually eaten well after the meat and potatoes portion of the meal. And yes, Longhorn fan, we've got the staples well dished up in this class.
Longhorn Football Attrition News - Calvin Howell
Reports surfacing on the eve of National Signing Day that Texas Longhorn defensive tackle Calvin Howell is electing to transfer. Howell was expected to contend for major reps this Spring and battle for a starting defensive tackle spot, replacing the departing Kheeston Randall. Good luck to Calvin wherever he chooses to strap it on again. Hook 'em.
Longhorn Network: No Carriage Ride In Disney-Comcast Mega Deal
ESPN's parent company, The Walt Disney Company, and Comcast, the nation's largest cable provider, announced a 10-year deal establishing distro rights for Disney properties along with an industry breakthrough agreement allowing Comcast to offer Disney programming to its customer through Xfinity My TV. This will allow Comcast customers the ability to watch programming on mobile devices, pads, etc. This certainly is a no brainer given the company's loss of traditional cable subscribers the last several quarters replaced by the more value-oriented broadband customer.
However, the BIG NEWS as it pertains to Longhorn Fans is Disney was unable to successfully obtain basic-tier rights distribution for their newly launched Longhorn Network, which has been a no-budge position for ESPN from the get go.
An executive with ESPN, Katina Arnold, confirmed the slight in email exchange with an Orangebloods forum poster ($):
Texas Football: Manny Diaz – A Name Worthy Defense
"Are we in fact first account witnesses to the next great defensive mind?" - TXStampede, Burntorangenation.com - January 2, 2012.
Okay, okay. I admit that is a stretch quoting myself in the 3rd person (LeBron James, holla). But is it really too far of a reach? While possibly true there are no more original ideas (with all due respect to Zuckerman), this Manny Diaz defense is bordering on one. And as such might be in need of a name. Seriously. Not too many defensive derivatives get tagged anymore but this one sure deserves strong consideration from the committee.
In reading all the usual suspects glowing tributes to the 2011 Texas Longhorn defense after a season defining conclusion, it is challenging to identify an angle that has not been covered about Coach Diaz. All Longhorn fan has to do is watch in awe the performance in the Holiday Bowl to know just how special first year defensive coordinator Manny Diaz's scheme truly is. And without the over achievement of his players, it is not too far of a stretch to consider a repeat season of 2010 may have unfolded in 2011.
Mack Brown snuck in a post-bowl game press conference the other day providing his thoughts on what faced the Longhorn program going into the offseason and the general lay of the land. As GhostofBigRoy mentioned in the earlier press conference notes, a tidbit caught my eye when he announced, "Our coaches usually visit with pro teams before spring practice. Manny and the defensive guys will probably go back to the Jets, because the Jets and the Cowboys is what they have patterned themselves after." While I did not know we visited in the past, clearly Manny Diaz is not resting on his laurels.
Texas Beats Demons...and Cal 21-10
8-5 sure sounds better than 7-6. That was a big brick the team laid on the rebuilding foundation in tonight's 2011 Holiday Bowl beating Cal 21-10.
Defense Defense Defense. Manny Diaz had four weeks to prepare for a mid-ranked offense and he proved his worth tonight. The Texas Longhorns forced five Cal turnovers, had six sacks on the night, a gazillion tackles for loss, etc., etc., etc.
Offensively, we found a way in the 2nd half to create enough momentum and big plays when it counted to score touchdowns. Most importantly answering on the next possession after Cal took a 10-7 lead in the 3rd quarter.
MVP honors went to outgoing middle linebacker Keenan Robinson and true freshman quarterback David Ash.
Congratulations to all the Seniors for pulling up their boot straps and rowing hard this season to help put Texas back on the winning track. Shoutout to Justin Tucker, Blaine Irby, Cody Johnson, Keenan Robinson, Emmanuel Acho, Blake Gideon, Fozzy Whitaker, David Snow, and all the rest. These guys deserve a ton of credit for their leadership and hard work. Good luck to them in their future endeavors.
We'll have more later on the details of the game. In the mean time, pop a top and celebrate another Bowl Game victory!

Baylor Bears Blast Texas Longhorns 48-24
Coming into the game the test would be Baylor's electric, quick-strike offense against the vaunted Texas defense. Robert Griffin III ran for two touchdowns and passed for another two. He managed the game effectively and efficiently and hit the young Longhorn defensive backs on crossing routes, boundary routes, and speed routes. The entire RGIII arsenal was on display for the entire Heisman voting nation. He lived up to the billing.
He proved he deserves the Heisman. With an exclamation mark.
While true, his counterpart, Case McCoy, had a topsy-turvey game looking good in spots but the mistakes (ie. 5 turnovers) were crippling as Baylor turned them into 27 points.
Texas actually got it going in the 2nd quarter and led 21-14 and only trailed by three 24-21 at halftime. The 3rd quarter started promising but back-to-back interceptions netted the Bears 10 points. Combine that with another 80 yardish drive and the game for the most part was over.
Texas vs Baylor Bears: 2nd Half Open Thread
Well, Team Case had it going until the late interception. And what a catch by Blaine Irby on a too high ball by McCoy. Oh my.
Either the Texas passing game is not very good, or the Baylor defense is atrocious. Any way you slice it Texas is making a game of it and doing as good a job as anyone shutting down the Baylor offensive juggernaut outside of the first 2 gashing TD drives.
Texas leads TOP over 2-to-1, 340 to 230 offensive yards, and is 8/11 on 3rd down conversions. We had to battle back against spotting them 14 points and some questionable officiating early.
It's a 4 quarter ball game. Buckle your seat belts.

2011 Big 12 Report: Week Thirteen
In a league of offenses that never ceases to entertain, there are no less than six teams currently in the top 25 of BCS standings. There are also 6 teams in the top 15 in total offense with Baylor, Oklahoma State, and Oklahoma numbers 2, 3, and 4.
With the regular season coming to a close this weekend, and no longer a Big 12 championship game, all eyes will be tuned to Stillwater as the Oklahoma State University Cowboys host the Oklahoma Sooners in their annual Bedlam game. This year's version just so happens to determine the winner of the Big 12. If the last game played between these two teams is any indication of what we can expect, look for a lot of drama to be played out on the field.
And speaking of drama, could college football fans have received any better Thanksgiving holiday gift than what took place in College Station? Given the after-game missives the answer is a resounding no. Let's review the mother of all rivalry games and its outcome.
Game of the Week:
#22 Texas
LAST WEEK: A young and inexperienced Texas team got down 13-0 early against the Aggies and battled back for a gut-punching (to A&M) 27-25 win behind an spectacular defensive performance, timely special teams plays, and Justin Tucker's leg. The Texas offense was almost unwatchable for the entire game, but Case McCoy was able to put together that final drive to set up Tucker's field goal that silenced the crowd at Kyle Field.
Outside of the first and final A&M drives, I believe that was one of the best defensive performances a Mack Brown team has ever had. The Aggies' average field position was the 35.5 yard line and seven of their seventeen drives started beyond their 40, and still the defense held them to 16 points below their scoring average and over two yards less than their yards per play average. The 2009 destruction of Nebraska's offense was more thorough, but A&M's offense is actually good.

Let that indelible mark stand as the annual football game with A&M comes to a close.
As for the final outcome of Thursday's game: Daggers.
The last Thanksgiving Day game between the two schools for the foreseeable future (maybe ever) was not played for a trophy or a post-season reward. No, this game was played as all rivalry games should be played and that is for bragging rights. And not just your garden variety type either. The stakes for Texas were to muzzle irascible Aggie and send them packing to a new conference home with their tails dragging behind them. For A&M, exorcise Texas arrogance and drive a stake in their hearts to last the next 100 years.
How fitting the game turned on a break given that the Horns last two opponents turned theirs into wins. Just maybe the football gods saw fit to give one back to the men in white with the personal foul penalty to extend the final drive of the game. Yes, the helmet-to-helmet rule is controversial and Texas sure has had their fair share go against them. But the drive extending call did not result in the defining play of the winning possession. That play belonged to Case McCoy.
Alan Trubow served it up in his Hookem.com review: "Here's where you come out," Brown said he told him (McCoy) with 1:42 remaining. "Here's where you become the guy. Every quarterback has to have a signature moment, and this is going to be yours. I thought it would be last week. You weren't ready for that. But now you are. You're going to take it down and win the game."
Struggling for most of the game with little or no help from an incapacitated receiving group, McCoy summoned up those it factor genes that he flashed in High School, put the team on his back, and willed the Horns on a 50-yard drive with a fraction of time left on the clock into field goal range. His decision making was timely. His passing was accurate. And he took advantage of play J20 with a 25 yard truck-it scamper right down the Aggies throats in what will forever be one of the more discussed anecdotes in Longhorn lore.
Folks, you can't make this stuff up. It actually happened. Here's a guy who set in the stands at DKR and was visibly upset, possibly crying, when his older brother Colt McCoy was carted off the field due to a dirty hit. A guy who has been vilified since the first day he suited up in burnt orange. They said he didn't have the arm strength. That he's not tough enough. Not very good foot work. Throws wounded ducks. Etc, etc, etc. While maybe some or all are true, the things rarely discussed are his moxie, leadership skills, and determination.

Thank you Henry James!
Truly a team win and one for the ages. The guys in white hats always come out on top no matter the outcome.
Now GTFO, Aggie.
