Livin' in St Pete and enjoying the Rays these days. Pirates fan by birth....darn, I watch some lousy baseball.

278 Million to one
Fun overall article from NYTimes. "Multiply those four probabilities together, and you get a combined probability of about one chance in 278 million of all these events coming together in quite this way."
Yank-mes or BlowSox?
So - who are you cheering for this weekend?
RedSux - so that the Rays can perhaps take over first place again?
or the bazillion dollar juggernaught from the Bronx - to hopefully bury Boston and it's hoarde of bandwagon fans a good 10 games outta first?
I'd have to say that I'd like to see 3 outta 4 for the Yanks. I'll worry about the division once I secure the playoffs - and 3 more losses from Bawston would make me happy. Can't let NY sweep though.
Rays hold the #1 spot!!!
oh...wait....that's not a good thing.
Rays @ Yankees tickets
I've got 2 tickets for Friday night, July 16. Bleachers, section 202, row 6, seats 19/20. Same 2 for Sunday afternoon, July 18.
Unfortunately - I can't make either game. Offering to my Rays fans first here. $40/game.
Lemme know if you're interested soon, before I put 'em on Stubhub. We can figure out mail, shipping, paypal, whatever if you want the tix and can go.
Go Rays!
Three more words
I Need one fantasy player
Need one player for a Yahoo league with the following highlights....
$50 to join (all paid back out)
10 team league
H2H format, 2 divisions
Fantasy Points league, with pretty standard stats. H, 2B, 3B, HR, RBI, R, K, SB, etc....IP, GS, W, L, R, H, K, BB...etc
Daily transactions allowed (change your lineup daily) though you can set up to a week in advance.
Post a reply if you're interested and I'll shoot you an email with more information. Players are from pretty much all over, some of us know each other, but not everyone. Fairly competitive.
Best run differential in the AL (and 2nd in baseball) belongs to the Tampa Bay Rays.....now let's get OVER .500!!!!!
Rays Season Has Hope
BOSTON — Maybe it wasn't really just the American League East’s bad dream. Maybe opening day's domination of the Tampa Bay Rays by Josh Beckett wasn't the end of the defending AL champions. On Wednesday, the cosmos again seemed out of sorts in dumpy Fenway Park, where the ill-informed and often obnoxious fans had to watch the Red Sox get dismissed by the Rays, 7-2, to effectively land a powerful counter-punch in the division race. What's worse is that Scott Kazmir looked good enough to crack the rotation of our beloved Sox, Carlos Pena no longer seems destined to strike out 600 times in the season, and that desperate housewife at 3rd (I can never remember her name because she doesn't play in Boston) shook off a couple double-plays to hit a ball into the historic seats of ol' Fenway. I guess the baseball world just isn't ready to go back to how it should be, where all anyone is interested in is the hated Yankees and our underdog, tiny payroll, loveable Pink Sox.

Reds @ Rays on Saturday? Anyone need 2?
Come on folks - save me from eating all my ticket costs, or just enjoy the game on me.
Who wants two SRO tickets to the last weekend spring training game in Port Charlotte? I can't go.
They cost me $24 after ticketmaster, but just make me an offer. I could mail them today (maybe they'll make it), or meet you somewhere around Tampa/Clearwater/St Pete Friday or early Saturday.
I tried the fan shot route, but didn't get any reply, so now I'm rambling here.
Fantasy Baseball sites?
All,
I'm looking for opinions on fantasy sites. My friends and I like playing a point-based game (not rottessiere) where you get points for basically everything good...and lose them for bad things.
In the past, we used Sandbox.com - but the website seemed really old, and the price has gotten expensive ($40/person for a league)
Last year, we tried sportsline.com - and they let us customize everything, and had tons of data...however, nothing could really be tailored to how we used it. Information overload.
What other sites have people used - and enjoy?
thanks
Phils blog is posting that tonights game is going to be officially postponed at 2pm today. I'm in Philly...that makes total sense, this weather sux.
Anyone know what face-value is for WS tix? Wondering how much lower I can expect prices to move by the weekend...scalper prices are nuts so far. Thanks.
Game 6 Tix on-sale tomorrow
Game 6 tix go onsale tomorrow, and team is removing the tarps for extra seating.
Playoff Roster?
Gotta get the roster back down to 25....who do you go with?
Anyone know how many 2008 Rays season ticket holders there are? Trying to argue our fairly lousy attendance.
Any reason Price wasn't called up?
Sorry - been out of touch for the last week. I can think of a few reasons David isn't with the team right now...but none that seem to be a better option than if he was.
Any more official reports than he hasn't been great in AAA?
BTW - this is in reference to calling him up prior to Sept 1 so that he could pitch in the playoffs. If they didn't do that, there's no reason for him to be with the team right now.
Why don't more of you want the Rays to trade?
I realize that some of the reports out there for asking prices now are silly, but when you look at this season - why aren't more fans willing to make a serious push to trade this year and go for it this year?
I know this year is earlier than planned, and that the Rays should be competitive for years to come - but playing in the AL East makes things pretty tough. This year the Yankees don't look as good as normal (despite the recent winning streak) and the Sox have had some injury issues. This is a pretty good time to make a push.
Look at our bats right now. Gross, Aybar, Hinske, and Gomes haven't been able to hit anything...and between RF & DH they're playing 2 positions that need to be filled with big bats. I wouldn't mortgage the world for a RP (and come July 31, it's unlikely that anyone really will), but we need a bat in a bad way.
Who knows what next year will bring, we need to make a trade for a bat and go for it this year.
Good - and for the Rays, relatively expendable: Niemmen (I really spell his name differently any time I type it), Brignac, Ruggianno, and depending on who we're going for...I'd consider including Hellickson or even Wade Davis. Heck, send 4 of those guys to Pittsburgh for Bay & Marte. We'd still have the best pitching in the league in 2009/10 and they could provide a huge boost this year.
The Rays are setup to be good for a few years - but good might not cut it in the AL East. We lead the division in late July...we need to go for it now!
The Trop - the good, the bad, and what you don't know
With all the new ballpark talk, let's go back and talk about what we like, dislike - and what we might not know - about the Trop.
Final Predictions?
How are we going to finish?
60-83 overall - ABOVE .500 since August....but...
Trade Rumors...Wheeler not done moving?
From MLBTR, and I found it an interesting idea...
Could D-Rays Flip Dan Wheeler?
Keith Law raises a good point in his blog post today - the Devil Rays might be able to spin Dan Wheeler for a younger, cheaper player. Law thinks it's very likely that Andrew Friedman and Co. will aggressively shop Wheeler in the next two days. They've managed to spin Ty Wigginton into a more scarce commodity with higher demand.
For example: if Octavio Dotel is worthy of a discussion about Dodgers' shortstop Chin-Ling Hu, does Wheeler fall within the same realm? If not, does controlling him through 2008 close the gap? With Reid Brignac struggling in Double A overall, why not attempt to add another shortstop? Or if Brignac succeeds (his bat has come alive this month), the Rays could move Hu to second base. Evan Longoria at third base would make Akinori Iwamura expendable.
Another option would be to target Seattle's Jeff Clement, though I'd imagine Bill Bavasi would want more than just Wheeler. Carlos Pena would be a nice fit.
Rays Pitching
OK...the Rays pitching is bad.....we have a staff ERA of 5.70. No other staff is worst than 4.99....but wait....what if......what if I remove the numbers of James Shields, Scott Kazmir, and Al Reyes...then what do I have??
The Rays Chose the AL East?
Was watching the Braves game this afternoon and they said that Naimoli picked to play in the AL East because he wanted to have the Sox & Yankme's come to town each year.
Yeah....that was a good decision.....
I did not know that. Did you?? Just one more way Vince handicapped this team....yes, just rambling to get to 300 characters....
Where's Jonny?
OK...so we scored some runs yesterday, won the game, and Josh Wilson had a couple hits...but....WHY IS HE PLAYING?
Going into last night's game, for the month of July - Wilson was hitting .158 with an OPS of .526. He has 0 walks, and 7 K's.
Jonny Gomes is hitting .344 with an OPS of .986 in July. He also has hits in his last 6 games. He does have 9 K's, but has drawn 1 walk.
Yet, Wilson has started 3 games since the AS break, and Gomes only 2.
What would you trade Dukes for?
OK....it's time for Dukes to go, and I no longer really care what we get for him. How about you...what would you accept for Elijah Dukes?
Here are some ideas to get you thinking:
"According to Texas League archives, after the Dallas minor league team swapped pitcher Joe Martina to New Orleans in 1921 for two barrels of oysters, he was forever known as "Oyster Joe."
http://seattlepi.nwsource.com/baseball/271626_s2dbarter25.html
I like oysters, and it's hard to find good one's in Florida in June, but....
I think we should send him to Philly (where the fans can relentlessly boo him) for 15,000 cheesesteaks (and Jose Mesa.) The team can then do a free cheesesteak promotion for all fans that have had to endure all the news on Dukes.
Some thoughts on last night...and a silver lining
Reyes, the rest of the bullpen, Dukes, Maddon, and Kaz....
The Orlando Experiment
What does everyone think about the Rays playing 3 home games in Orlando this week? Is anyone going? Good idea...bad idea....good idea, bad implementation? Anyone in the Orlando area that can speak to marketing?
Agressiveness??
There are numerous reasons the Rays aren't scoring runs right now (no Aki, poor BA, etc), but one of the most glaring is our lack of agressivness on the bases.
What should the Rays look to achieve in 2007?
Here's something to think about on a day where the weather is warm, and thoughts are back on baseball. I was kinda disappointed that the Rays didn't do much this offseason, and the pitching they have at the major league level this year is still atrocious, so I can't expect the team to improve that much this year. Of course, I do understand that it wouldn't have made that much sense to sign some of the guys, for some of the money, that was around this offseason.
So, I think its a given the team's not going to make huge strides in the W/L department this year - what are realistic goals for the Rays in 2007?
