On The Defensive Line
"I'm really looking forward to these last two days with Leon Mackey," he said. "I think he's really going to help us. Delvon SImmons is going to be a good player in time. Brandon Jackson and Dartwan have done a great job. I thought at end that Brandon Jackson is a guy that's really surprised me. He's done us a good job."

On Seth Doege
"Brown said that while Doege didn't have one if his greatest performances in the scrimmage, he also wasn't afraid to throw the veteran QB to the wolves. "It was up and down, but to give him credit, I've tried to put Brewer in good situations. I really wasn't worried about putting him in the best situations. I was more worried about getting guys touches when he was in the game. We could've got him going if I thought it was a major factor. He's a good player. He's a really good player."

Go read the rest, there are a lot of good words to consider.

I don't know much about Jordan Sterns, he is reported as a solid verbal on Rivals.

A running back from Cibolo Steele HS at from 5-11 185 to 6-1, 195 depending on who one reads. About a 4.5 40 kind of guy.

Reportedly recuited by John Lovett and some guy named Prunty !!

Found some moving pictures, but all I can do is provide the url for the link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ClJYfhdNjhc

Double-T Nation LB-DE Cqulin Hubert is gone....

As reported by Don Williams:

LB-DE Cqulin Hubert has been kicked off team for violation of team rules, a Tech spokesman said Saturday.

and

Hubert was 's 6th-leading tackler in '11 w/38 stops, including 5 1/2 tackles for loss. Was dismissed Thursday.

and

A recap of Hubert's career and dismissal:

And so it goes....the dreaded violation of team rules.

Don't know what it was, at this point it may not be relevant..he is gone and we are down one linebacker who was at a point to where he should be able to demonstrate experience and maturity in the program....alas.

"Tyler (Texas) Lee center Conner Grooms has committed to play football at Texas Tech. The three-star standout hosted Tommy Tuberville and Neal Brown today, and accepted the Red Raiders' preferred walk-on offer."

and

"The Red Raiders head into the 2012 season with very little experience at the center position, so the 6-foot-4, 280-pound prospect should have a great chance to get on the field and earn a scholarship."

Double-T Nation Lady Raiders at Hofheinz, nice win over the Cougs.

Last evening was a fun night for the Lady Raiders at Hofheinz.  It was a win, always a plus, but it was also a big win numbers wise.

Lady Raiders come out looking good in black uniforms and stood out against the cougs in home court white with red.  We were styling.  My grandaughter, a young lady who knows basketball uniforms, declared that we looked best.

I was hoping for a good game and was absolutely mesmerized the first 10 minutes or so of play while our defense simply stopped the cougs from scoring.  Passes were intercepted, shots were blocked, and shooting was kept off keel by a fine looking help defense based on get after it aggresive play and speed and quickness.  Monique Smalls was a terror for the opposing guards and Casey Morris was equally relentless, when there was a double it always ended in trouble for the home team.  What amazed be was looking up at the scoreboard, I think about 10 minutes into the first period and the cougs had more fouls than points.   The Lady Raiders were about 25 at that point.

We made a lot of points on steals early and really did not get into team offense that much.

The game kind of slowed a bit the remainder of the first period with us trying to work the ball some and get it into the post for easy shots from Kierra Mallard or Shauntal Nobles who posting up a bit.  Neither was particularly effective, IMHO, with this work.  Nobles, who while playing pretty decent defense, could not get a shot off, that is she could not transition from catching a pass to converting it to a shot.  Yet she played a lot of minutes and kept getting opportunities...that is the way to help her learn her trade, she will get there.  We also played Ebony Walker inside some as will with similar results.  Our senior Mallard would get the shot of, she was plenty quick, but it would be a miss more often than not it seemed...alas much to my displeasure she also attempted a couple of 3's...  What these three did consistly is get rebounds and play defense.  Mallard impressed me with her quickness, her hands and her range on the court on defense.  She helped get a steal off of the cougs best guard who was trying to set up their offense.

We did not seem to shoot a lot of three's, but when the cougs did go into zone defense they paid.  Again I was impressed with three guards, Smalls took a couple, as did Morris, but Chynna Brown seemed to thrive with that opportunity, I think she hit like 4 out of 5 ( am doing this entirely from memory and my impressions of the game, no effort given to checking the stat line ).  Brown also made me smile simply because she would shoot a pull up jumper from about 15.

All in all the game was dominated by our ladies.  I say that at no expense to the good efforts from Houston, I think they lost a lot of experience from last season and it showed last night.

I was happy to see that our transfer from TTU, Marrisa Ashton, who played HS BB at nearby Dickenson HS landed at Houston after two seasons at Tech.  When I realized that she was with the Cougs I made special effort to make sure I saw the post game handshakes.  Coach Curry led the line as is normal for HC's and gave Marrisa and got from her a warm hug, pats on the back, smiles and clearly nice words, then Marrisa was greeted equaly warmly by most of the remaining Lady Raider roster and staff.  Made my heart smile.

What a wonderful venue for basketball.  Hofheinz pavillion, once the proud home of Phi Slamma Jamma with Hakeem Olajuwan, Clyde Drexler, Larry Micheaux, Michael Young, Reid Gettys, Alvin Franklin and the others.  A great time for men's basketball with great exciting games, perhaps the most exciting in my basketball history, eminating from this arena.  Hofheinz is build soley for basketball and every seat is a good one, even the bad ones.  It looked very lonely seeing it barely used for a Div1 women's game, I couldn't but help feel a certain sadness for this proud building.

I cannot project this Lady Raiders team's chances for post season based on this game.  It was way too one sided.  That alone may bode well, but I did not get to see them pushed or stessed as a team to see how they would manage a strong challenge.  They have a few of those on the Big12 schedule this season.

I will say that if I had another reasonable opportunity to watch them play, I would take it.  They play fast, they play agressive defense, with opportunisitic offense, and they play team basketball.  Go to a game if you get an opportunity.

Smith seems to have his head on right and likely has from the early moments of the suspension...he has words that tell us why...go read them.

He also talks almost apologetically about his game versus the fishing team....wasn't mentally ready in so many words.

He is looking to take his ability as an elite rush DE to the field this Sat and continue his run to garner attention from the pros.

This is a fine report from Rivals.

Double-T Nation Thoughts from Coach Tuberville's presser

These are my notes/impressions of coach's words, the quotes are my best attempt only.  Enjoy for what it is worth.

Said he wasn't one to look at stats too much, but we can't win if we get only 4 td's out of 13 possessions...way too many field goals.

Game difference was them being more effective in the Red Zone and us going for too many field goals.

"There is nothing good about losing."

"I have had all the accolades I want about team played hard coach, team played good coach."

Stephens:  "not good' was said a lot of times.  Won't say anything until a doctor tells him what the injury is, waiting for swelling to go down so they can do an MRI.

In response to Stephens' response to a late hit, Coach said Stephens said, 'I should have caught the ball.'

"If we get our offense going, we are going to score a lot of points."

Coach Tuberville implied, in my opinion pretty clearly, that Stephens will be out until maybe Spring.  Remember he is saying "not good" a lot.

Good to have Scott Smith back on the field, he did not play good, got too deep too many times.

Stephens replacement talk and Aaron Crawford:  Crawford can block as good as Stephens, that is required--good blocking, Crawford needs confidence, he can be a 100 yard per game rusher.  Gona open it up and see who wins the spot.

17/18 missed tackles this game.

Coach Snyder has a very good football team.  They don't have any stars, but as a team playing team football, they are very good.

TCU is going to take TAMU's spot on the schedule.  They are going to contribute to the Big12, maybe make it a bit more difficult to recruit DFW area.

Double-T Nation Week 3 Sagarin Rank

Here is a snapshot of the Big12 after week 3's games:

I chose to show Strength of Schedule because I think it is signicant at this point in the ranking results.

Rank School W-L SOS
2 Oklahoma 2-0 18
10 Oklahoma State 3-0 59
15 Texas 3-0 72
21 Texas A&M 2-0 126
30 Baylor 2-0 87
38 Texas Tech 2-0 204
40 Missouri 2-1 136
43 Iowa State 3-0 45
55 Kansas State 2-0 199
69 Kansas 2-1 75

I don't like being behind OSU, Texas, TAMU, and Baylor.  I can see why though, here is where I think SOS is making impact along with our but 2 wins.

Nevada is ranked 68, SOS = 38, a good win will help our cause on this list.

Shown as a solid verbal as of 20Sep....

5-10, 170, Moberly Area CC, Moberly, Missouri

3 Stars

"Moberly Area Community College freshman basketball player Daylen Robinson was named to the 2010-11 NJCAA Region 16 All-Region Team in voting conducted by member coaches.
Robinson, a 6’0 guard from Northeast High School in Kansas City, led the MACC Greyhounds in scoring at 15.9 ppg, free throws (74%), and assists (6.1)."

From his HS coach: 'Daylen Robinson, Northeast, senior, 6-0, guard When longtime Raytown coach Mark Scanlon took the head coaching job at Northeast, he quickly became acquainted with Robinson, a player who reminds him of former Raytown great Tyronn Lue. Robinson missed part of last season due to academic issues, but had 29 points, nine steals and seven assists in a season-opening win over St. Louis Construction Careers Center last week. "Some of the stuff he does, I don't think there's a better player around," Scanlon said. "I've had some great players at Raytown, but I haven't had a playmaker-type kid like this since Tyronn Lue." '

The coach, he stays busy...

"She’s the best player in Northern California," Summerville said. "I’ve been coaching around this area since 1999 and she is one of the most electrifying players I have ever seen coming out of high school. She’s phenomenal."

Looks a good class of 4. Two inside and two outside.

Well done, coach and staff !!

"RRS publisher Chris Level, managing editor Aaron Dickens and associate editor Michael Graham weigh in on three Texas Tech football questions in this installment of The Roundtable."

"1.) WHAT WAS THE MAIN THING THAT YOU TOOK AWAY FROM BIG 12 MEDIA DAYS?"

"2.) WHAT COACHES WERE YOU MOST AND LEAST IMPRESSED WITH IN DALLAS?"

"3.) THE RED RAIDERS OPEN FALL CAMP A WEEK FROM FRIDAY. WHAT'S THE BIGGEST STORYLINE FOR TECH HEADING INTO PRESEASON CAMP?"

TallMike's favorite line from this report, from Chris Level: ' ""Really, Mack? You don't think showing high school games on an institutional network will have any impact on recruiting? I get why you are defending the Longhorn Network and don't blame you a bit for doing so, but please don't insult our intelligence." '

"We feel disrespected as a team," quarterback Seth Doege said Tuesday, the final of two Big 12 football media days. "We have it in our locker room highlighted, and it says ‘disrespect' all over it. We're using that as motivation to finish out the summer, and we're going to use it as motivation going into fall camp. We know we're a whole lot better than seventh."

This is another report on Day 1, but with video !!!

10 months ago Tm_avitar_tiny TallMike 0 comments

"Where other coaches before him shied away from challenging the University of Texas athletics TV channel, the Longhorn Network, Missouri head coach Gary Pinkel brought up a concern that Texas head coach Mack Brown would have to address just moments later."

Coach Pinkel: "It's a lack of common sense there to think that the network, the university network, can have high school games on their network," Pinkel said. "To me there's no common sense there. I have enough trouble coaching football so I'll leave that to some other people to make those decisions."

So Coach Mack, who immediately followed, got to answer the stir up caused by Pickel's remarks.

"It was a no-win situation for the Longhorns. Brown knew as much and he took the high road. He avoided the network questions with blanket statements, praising the Texas brass for having the foresight and determination to make the network a reality."

I would love to know what Coach Tuberville, the next speaker on the agenda is thinking about as he decides what his is going to talk about tomorrow.

Bubba Jennings Video !!

I apologize if that has been posted, if so, I missed it and someone please remove the post.

I cannot remember seeing a better video of Coach Jennings, one can see how excited he is to be at TTU as well as what looks to me as a person of pretty quiet demeanor.

I also like the good look at Coach Gillispie, he is a very personable interview, we are going to like him.

"Then, with less than six minutes remaining and the Tech crowd bruising the West Texas firmament, a totally unknown player by the name of Greg Tyler etched his name in Tech football history. The Red Raiders lined up in the power-I, and with the Aggies expecting action from either Hadnot or Reeves, forgot about Tyler."

Kudos to Joe Yeager over at Scout for a happy reminder of a home game victory over the hapless aggggssssssss.

"Men's basketball head coach Billy Gillispie is pulling out all the stops when it comes to making sure his players take advantage of their educational opportunities at Texas Tech University. He is setting the bar high in his first year in Lubbock by telling the team that he wants to see only A's on their report cards - no exceptions."

I found this an interesting insight into the methods of Coach Gillispie...

"Like any football team, good, mediocre or bad, Texas Tech has several players whose performance will be particularly critical to the squad’s success. These players, whether by virtue of sheer talent, experience, leadership ability, importance of the position played, or depth concerns, are especially crucial. They may or not be the best players on the club, but they would be very conspicuous were they to be absent for any reason. In fact, that may be the best way to conceive of the critical players—they are the performers the team could least afford to lose."

Here is a good look at Jarvis Phillips from a fine TTU web site !

Enjoy !

A favorite point of discussion--recruiting West Texas and Texas in general:

"We want to get a lot of players from West Texas and move on through the Metroplex area and through Houston," Tuberville said. "Last year, we actually signed 12 players outside of Texas ... That won't happen that often. But we got in so late. You're recruiting players when they're in ninth and 10th grade and building relationships. So we had to go to other places.

"I think in the next few years, we'll take probably 80 percent of the players from the state of Texas and a lot of them from West Texas. I'm excited about that. There's great coaches and great players, and I'm looking forward to them being a part of our program."

Well this is as weird as it gets for me....I chose to read about an incident at Bush Airport Houston reporting on a West Point Cadet on home leave who was attacked by a noted singer's body guards.

Turns out he is Coach King's grandson.

"I worked with him a little bit in the spring," Gillispie said. "He’s very athletic. He’s eager to learn. He’s a guy who’s gaining confidence as he goes. He’s got a lot of work to do, just like we all have a lot of work to do, but I think he’s willing to do all that work. He’s a tremendous athlete and a tremendous person."

Now we understand better why we did not see Crockett play more last season. Considering what he was learning, it makes sense.

Thank you, Clovis News-Journal for a good report !!

Double-T Nation Memorial Day

From the Wiki:

bq. commemorates men and women who died while in military service to the United States.  First enacted to honor Union and Confederate soldiers following the American Civil War,  it was extended after World War I to honor Americans who have died in all wars.

===============

Get with it Americans !!!

I like the thought that we honor those who have gotten us to where we are today.

The day is set aside to memorialize those who died.  LOL, some did not die but warrent memory also.  Some went 'only' near death, some did not die but realized a fate that may be worse.  They are patriots all !!

"I am still considering Georgia, Texas Tech and Nebraska," Turene said. "I have already been to see the Cornhuskers. I will make my final decision on signing day, likely sometime in the afternoon."

As many players as we have committed already, we continue to be in the hunt for some really good ones.

We have been working on this UH commit for a while.

"Matt Wilson, an offensive tackle for Class 3A Division II finalist Coldspring-Oakhurst, said Monday he had switched his oral commitment from the Cougars to the Red Raiders after visiting the Tech campus this weekend."

I wanted another good potential OL. Wilson looks like a typical Air Raid tackle.

Double-T Nation WR Tyson Williams (6-0, 205, Jr-2L)

Word posted on the Scout site says that KCBD reported a WR for West Texas A&M transferred to TTU, then someone else commented Tyson Williams.

96 catches for 1,321 yards, has good speed.

He was a good player at Aldine HS but did not attract Div-1 offers, l am not sure that he is an impact player for TTU, he might find a way to help.

NFL Draft Scout rates him 79 out of 319 WR's--whatever that means.

I don't know if he will be eligible next season or not due to the transfer, if not he will have one year to play.  He is reportedly looking to play D-1 football to raise his opportunities for the NFL.

He has a brother, Trey, who plays rb for Spring Dekaney HS and has interest in TTU, I don't know that we have offered.  Trey is 5-8, 175, and fast.  This one has a nice offer list as reported by Rivals: LSU, TAMU, Alabama, Arkansas, Auburn, etc.
