Royal Announcers
I have to admit that I like the Ryan for Bob Davis switch off between radio and TV. Ryan and Paul seem especially comfortable on the TV side. However, I have one little nitpick that seems to creep in at some point every year.....
Ever notice when the Royals get going like this that every day the opposing pitcher is "throwing a gem", or "really settled down" or "brought his A game". You can insert any pitcher: Chad Gaudin, Dana Eveland, CC Sabathia, Scott Baker, etc.
At some point don't you just have to say, "CC has been terrible so far this year, but he caught a break in facing the Royals, who simply cannot hit."
Is Meche hurt?
The Star reported that Meche is being moved back a day to face the Twins instead of the Yankees on 6 days rest instead of 5.
Why would you move your #1 back under these circumstances? He had a rough outing, but mostly it was due to one long ball, not necessarily total ineffectiveness. His spring was generally effective and his first start was adequate.
Is he hurt or ill? It seems odd you would not want your ace to pitch against the Yanks given the opportunity and the fact it's only his 3rd start of the year.
Why Grudzielanek?
Things seem to be going well for the Royals organizationally. They will not lose 100 (hopefully). They are signing their picks. They are even signing international free agent youngsters. By all accounts they seem to have a direction.
But, why would they bring Grudz back? I know, he's hitting .300. I know he won the GG last year.
However, it's a soft .300. He does not draw walks. He has shown signs of being brittle this year. Moreover, the Royals have an adequate replacement in German. Why would a cash strapped team waste money on an old, middling 2nd baseman?
The only thing that makes sense to me is if the Royals got some monetary concession to re-up him.
Just a thought on Gordon
Near the middle of spring training, Alex Gordon hurts his shoulder and misses a few games. He is checked out, is eventually cleared and returns to the lineup. After a couple weeks or so, it is finally acknowledged that he will break with the big club.
Almost from that point on, starting with the two exhibition games in Houston, he sputters. He has made a number of errors mostly of the throwing variety. At the plate, he has gone from Minor League Player of the Year to a batter who can't catch up with almost any fastball.
So, the question has to be asked:
Is he playing hurt? Did he come back from the injured shoulder to ensure he would make the team? Is it still bothering him? Will we wake up in a week or two-like Runelvys' Elbow or Teahen's shoulder--and discover he has been trying to play through it this whole time?
