I never actually thought I'd see the day Lubbock went wet. Well, it's here. Congrats to those who either a). cared about this, or b). will take advantage of this. I, sadly, don't fall into either category anymore.

Gotta feel bad for the strip owners, but hopefully they'll find a way to make it work.

HS Star Rankings

There's a great nugget on the DMN about the guys drafted in the first round of the draft this weekend, and their star ranking coming out of high school.

According to the tidbit, the four and five star kids were hits about 56% of the time and ended up as first round picks. On the other hand, 14 of the 32 first round picks were three star and lower coming out of high school.

So, it really doesn't seem to matter too much if you fill your roster with guys who have only three, maybe four stars. Yes, there are vastly fewer five star kids than three star kids out there each year, but the point being that you can field a solid winning program without a bevy of 4- and 5-star HS athletes. Just do what we do and coach'em up!

I think most of you knew that already, but it was still interesting to see it broken out.

Here's the link.

Sorry about the misinformation last night on the Carolina signing. This is from the Dallas Morning News, so it's valid.

"There's a report on the Internet that Texas Tech's Graham Harrell signed with the Cowboys, but that isn't correct. Harrell will participate in the Browns' rookie minicamp, according to his agent, Chad Speck.

Speck said he had some contact with the Cowboys, but an offer didn't come from Valley Ranch."

And the link...http://cowboysblog.dallasnews.com/

I may be alone, but Leach's whinning about all this is starting to get on my nerves. Not sure he's doing Graham any favors...guilt by association, and all that.

After going undrafted, QB Graham Harrell has signed a preferred free agent contract tonight with the Carolina Panthers. Not sure what other options he had, but he's going to have a chance to earn a spot behind Jake Delhomme, Josh McCown and Matt Moore. Good luck, Mr. Harrell!!

Details at the press conference tonight, but multiple sources are confirming that Texas Tech and Mike Leach agreed to new terms for an extension today. Good news for all Texas Tech fans. From the DMN breaking news...

"Texas Tech football coach Mike Leach has reached an agreement on a contract extension with the school. Details to come."

Now, what will we argue about? : )

This is a link from the blog of a Houston lawyer who blogs on lawyer stuff - redundant, I know. He offers a unique breakdown on the Tech offer to Leach and possible solutions.

I have no idea if this guy is credible or a crackpot, but it's an interesting read.

Wow...I know we don't want to copy content, but I couldn't resist.

Texas Tech Athletics Director Gerald Myers released this statement regarding Coach Mike Leach's contract:

“This ‘so called’ proposal is simply an offer for us to guarantee that Coach Leach could never be fired. It would cost us a maximum of $4.4 MILLION if we wanted to change coaches in the first year. It would cost Texas Tech millions in subsequent years of his five year contract.

“If Leach left Tech he would only pay Tech $500,000. Our proposal is a fair offer of $12.7 million for five years. Both Leach and Texas Tech would pay the same annually decreasing buyout figures. Leach’s agents’ proposal is not fair. We will not even respond to such a proposal.”

There's a great new site on the BON family of blogs called Big XII Hardball, and I will contribute some Tech baseball info there for the editor.

But what is the overall interest in Tech baseball by you guys. I can certainly double post if people want to read about it here. If not, then just head over to Big XII HB for some great content on the Big XII conference, which happens to be one of the strongest conferences in college baseball. Currently, Texas, Baylor, Missouri, Texas A&M and Oklahoma State are in the Baseball America pre-season Top 25.

For those who may not follow the team closely, Tech is expected to have another rough year but there is some bright young talent and a fantastic new coach (Dan Spencer) who is a top-shelf pitching coach and recruiter. He was named the 2007 Collegiate Baseball Magazine National College Pitching Coach of the Year in his first year as an associate head coach at Tech. This will be his first year as the head man at Tech.

Hance Speaks

This is from Kent Hance last night and I think it sums up the feeling of a lot of Raider Nation faithful at this point.

"Hance told The A-J on Friday that Leach’s interest in other jobs led the university to consider some of the new elements.

“I like Mike and I want him to be our coach, but I don’t want his agents shopping him around every year. I found it outrageous that I saw in the newspaper my football coach was interviewing for other jobs. We expect him to notify us. We want loyalty,” Hance said.

On the guarantee and buyout money, Hance said, “If it’s good for one, it’s good for the other. His agents say Mack Brown and Bob Stoops don’t have a buyout provision, and I told them when Mike wins a national championship I’ll take the buyout provision out.” "

Seems pretty logical and fair to this set of ears.
