So, does Doege make the adjustments to the speed of the game? Can the defense keep the awesome pace up? Discuss...

Season Reset

Okay, so are at the 2/3 pole on this season. Four games to play, so we have a large enough body of work to look at where we stand in the NCAA and assess how good or not we really are. We lost two fairly close games early on then we had Saturday, which I'm completely through thinking about. Time to move past that.

But really, where are we and how far can we go with the status quo? Take a look at the rankings in various categories. Have we made the progress everyone wants to see after 10 years? Now, please know that last statement is not a call to replace Leach - I'm over that, too, unless he keeps flirting with every school that calls (granted, I think his phone will stay silent this off season). I'm okay with him as our head guy. It's clear defense has not shown much abject improvement. Is that the players or the coaching or the scheme or the calls? Or bad luck?

Bear in mind there are 120 teams in D-IA

OFFENSE:

Passing Efficiency Offense: #11 (2 in the Bix II)

Passing Offense: #1 (1)

Rushing Offense: #118 (12)*

Total Offense: #4 (2)

Scoring Offense: #5 (2)

Sacks Allowed: #93 (11)*

DEFENSE

Passing Efficiency Defense: #46 (6)

Pass Defense: #91 (8)*

Rushing Defense: #57 (8)

Total Defense: #73 (8)*

Scoring Defense: #62 (9)*

Sacks Earned: #11 (2)

Tackle for Loss: #39 (6)

SPECIAL TEAMS

Net Punting: #97 (10)*

Punt Returns: #53 (7)

Kickoff Returns: #21 (3)

MISC

Turnover Margin: #103 (12)*

Nothing really startling in any of these numbers. The results are so-so on the field, so you'd expect so-so statistics which is what we have here. What suggestions - if you had a say - to fix the areas of concern (those with an *)?

Well, in less than three quarters of football, Michael Crabtree has exceeded the production of Darius Heyward-Bey who has played six full games. Take that for what it's worth as Jamarcus Russell may be the worst starting NFL QB in the last 10 years. Shaun Hill for SF is not much better, but Al Davis proves once again that he's a master of drafting failure.

This was ugly...our defense just didn't come out to play. Ruffin has his work cut out. Taylor Potts didn't help with three turnovers inside Aggie territory. Now, the best we can do is play spoiler and hope for a mid level bowl.

Looks like that nasty rumor about Sheffield missing the Texas A&M game due to injury is turning out to be fact. Here's to a speedy recovery! Let's rally behind Potts now that he's back.

Okay, I hate rumors as much as the next guy, but there's one floating around on raiderpower.com that seems to have some legs to this point. From what they are saying, Sheffield suffered a concussion during the Neb game and Potts will regain the starting job against aTm. I hope this is false for a multitude of reasons, not the least of which is Sheff's overall health.

I have absolutely NO info on this, have not heard it from anyone who may have a clue, and only know there's even a rumor from the other site. Anyone else hearing anything about this? I am hoping this thread will be very short lived and that it's just that - a silly rumor with no basis in fact. But now I am worried...apologies to all you Potts supporters, but I have no faith in young Taylor to lead this team effectively.

First Ranking of Season

After the systematic beating of Nebraska, voters stood up and took notice. Tech enters the AP poll for the first time this season at 21. This was a hard earned ranking for a season that has been a challenge and had a few bumps along the way. The fruits of their labor is now rewarded.

Of almost more interesting note is the fact that 3-3 Oklahoma is still somehow, someway, inexplicably ranked in the top 25 at number 25. For you research geeks, has there ever been a 3-3 team ranked in the top 25 AP poll?

After a compete destruction of KSU, Tech may have a QB controversy if Leach sticks with Potts if/when he gets healthy enough to play. Sheffield was simply stunning tonight. Perfectly thrown short, medium and deep passes with regularity has made him a quick fan favorite. Will he continue to lead the Red Raider charge?

After a nearly flawless first half, it looks like the many at DTN are hoping for a permanent change in QB. And they'd have a good argument.

UFL starts tonight

Well, after <strike>much</strike> very little fan fair the United Football League kicks off tonight. If you can find Vs or HDNet on your system, you to can watch a long list of no names, a shorter list of "Hey, that name sounds familiar," and a very short list of former NFL starters.

Here's a very brief rundown of some of the names you may recognize if you tune in. Fro a complete list, go here - UFL Rosters

Shannon Woods, RB - Texas Tech

Shaud Williams, RB - Alabama via Texas Tech

Brooks Bolinger, QB - Wisconsin

JP Lossman, QB - Tulane

Simeon Rice, LB - Illinois (yes, that Simeon Rice)

Tatum Bell, RB - Okie State

Teddy Lehman, LB - Oklahoma

Tim Rattay, QB - La Tech

Josh Scobey, RB - KState

Craphonso Thorpe, WR - Fla State (I just love the name...it's cra-fawn-zo, not crap-honzo)

Cecil Sapp, RB - Colo State

Todd Sauerbrun, P - West Virginia

Cory Ross, RB - Nebraska

Not sure if this league will have any traction, but it's nice to see some guys have another venue to play. Starters earn $35,000 with some opportunity to earn a little more. Punters, kickers and long snappers only get $25,000. Talk about knowing your true value!

The upside is all players are given full-time housing paid for by the teams during the season at either condos, townhomes or apartments, depending on what city they play in.
