Another Leach Book - This Time By an Outsider
A new book is out about the firing of Mike Leach, written by a stranger to the Tech community, Michael Lee Lanning, an aTm grad and ret'd Lt. Colonel in the Army. Lanning has published several books on military history but this is his first venture into the sports world. The title: Double. T - Double Cross
"It was kind of a ‘get even’ type thing," Lanning said. "Unfortunately, the overall conflict was people who should have been looking out for the interest of Texas Tech, the interest of the students, the interest of the graduates and the football team, put that aside for some of their personal dislikes for Mike Leach. The grounds he were fired upon were non-existent, did not occur."
His research included interviews with former players including Michael Crabtree and Danny Amendola.
3-4 Primer
For anyone interested, there's a pretty good series of articles on the 3-4 defense with a position-by-position breakdown of responsibilities on this blog. Oddly enough, the authors are watching Tech and Notre Dame go through the same changeover.
2010 Schedule Finally Official
I still don't get it. We get Weber St. instead of TCU. That'll help our SOS. Instead of playing our non-conf games up front to get ready for the Big-12, we play two meaningless games to end the season. And we play UT before letting the new right side of our O-line get settled in. Why do we let ESPN do this to us, Gerald? Just force of habit?
Best Hitler Rant
I know we've had several rants here, but this is the best I've come across. "I dreamed it in my head".
Wes Welker's Recovery Aid - Miss Hooters Int'l
Careful, Wes. No strenuous activity until the doc says so. I recommend plenty of bed rest.
This Makes Our Guys Look Good
We've all seen at least one of our O-lineman take a play off every now and then. I won't mention any names, but the initials M.W. come to mind. So check out this Florida State player. He gives new meaning to 'taking a play off'.
Photo Wars
There is a fun(?) war going on at a few Tech and OSU forums using Photoshopped pictures. If I can figure out all this tech stuff, I'll post a few from each side below. I'm guessing some of you tech-savvy guys can add a few of your own.
First a couple from the OSU side:

They seem to be fixated with the fat girlfriend theme. Not sure where this one comes from. Maybe UKRaider has converted a few friends to his north.

Where Do We Go From Here?
Well, 1/3 of the season is gone and we are 2-2. Not what any of us hoped for and not what many of us would allow ourselves to expect. Speaking for myself, I’m thinking it’s time I adjusted my expectations downward in order to minimize the suicidal thoughts. Some random thoughts to this point:
- Our defense is pretty good, maybe one of the best we’ve had in a while. But they are not dominant and they do have their weaknesses, starting with a lack of consistent pressure and containment. Any QB worth his salt will pick us apart (see last two games).
- As good as the D is, we can’t leave them on the field all night and expect to win. In our 4 games, we’ve lost the TOP battle in 3.
- Which brings us to the offense. I never thought this would be our Achilles heel. I don’t think we miss Crab nearly as much as we do Harrell, Hamby, Vasquez, and Reed. Really, 7 points in the second half? Not counting Rice, we’re averaging 30 points per game. Less than impressive, especially for a team that lives or dies by its offense. Especially for any team in the Big 12.
- Potts, Potts, Potts, where do I start. I noted after the Rice game that he looked a little panicky when there was any kind of pressure and that still seems to be holding true. Bad throws, bad technique, bad reads, bad decisions. Granted, if he had as much time as Harrell he’d do better, but he’s not going to get that this year so that’s just so much dreaming. I’d be tempted to give Sheffield a shot at New Mexico……..seriously. Maybe it would get Potts’ attention. Maybe that strong arm isn’t worth the bad decisions. Maybe Potts will grow out of it, but when and at what cost?
- Keenum was clearly the better QB last night. No contest.
- The running game was fantastic in the 1st half, but I’m not sure if that was a result of improved line blocking so much as it was taking advantage of their defensive schemes. Whatever the reason, why in the hell did we abandon it? Was it Leach or Potts making (bad) reads? I don’t know. If I ever see Potts call his own number on another QB sneak, it will be too soon.
- I like that we tried new plays to give Jeffers some touches, but where did those plays go in the 2nd half?
- Erxleben was really good. Over 46 yard average. The rest of special teams sucked.
- Play calling. Who in the hell called the 3 yard screen with 25 seconds left? The failure to kick a FG was fatal; it literally cost us the game (since they failed on their 2-point try). Who abandoned the running game? Was it Leach or bad reads by Potts?
- If Houston hadn’t shot themselves in the foot so many times (5 trips in the red zone - 9 points; 8 penalties including some drive-killers and one negating a Potts INT), they could have beat us by 30 points. They tried hard to give us the game, but we refused to take it.
We’ve got two weak teams coming up, then we have 4 ranked teams out of the last 6 (two on the road). Plus Baylor who scored 68 today. I know it’s pessimistic, but 6-6 is not entirely out of the question. Okay, maybe we beat Kansas at home. But that leaves OU at home (and we won’t come close to beating them playing like we have so far), and Nebraska and OSU on the road. 8-4 would seem to be an optimistic outcome. 9-3 seems delusional, but 7-5 is no stretch. If the guys get down, 7-5 is entirely possible and 6-6 is more likely. And all that assumes we beat the aggies.
And who do we lose to graduation after this season? Britton, Byrnes, Carter, Winn, Henley, Howard, Hunter, Jones, Nickerson, Sharpe, Wall, and M. Williams. We are overall a young team, so there’s always hope for the future. Not so much for this year.
Flu Cripples Lady Tech Volleyball
Our women's volleyball team had to cancel a conference game because they couldn't field a team. I sure hope this doesn't affect our football players. At least not until next week.
Early Release of OU, A&M TICKETS
As of right now, you can go online and buy tickets for the OU and A&M games (and others). The OU and atm tickets weren't scheduled to be released for a couple more weeks. I got 40-yard box seats for Kansas and 20-yard lower level seats for OU. (atm not being a rival, I passed on those)
Who's Going to the Rice Game?
I'm twisting off and going to the game this weekend. Not to date myself but the last time I went to a game in our stadium, we didn't call it 'The Jones', it didn't say AT&T on it, and a tornado had just knocked the lights down a couple of years earlier. We still had troops in Viet Nam if that makes it easier.
So who else here is going? Any tailgating going on with folks from DTN? I'm sure I'll hardly recognize the place, so any suggestions on where I can safely park my Harley (I'm old, not dead)? Any special rules this game like blackout or redout?
For anyone interested, I got surprisingly good seats online this morning.
Not that I'm superstitious or anything, but it just doesn't seem right to start a game without the mystery, yelling, face-painted girl.
