UT Volleyball Receives #3 Seed

In a sport where playoffs actually determine a champion, UT Volleyball received the overall #3 seed and #1 seed in the Austin regional. The Gazelles will play in Austin this Friday and Saturday in 1st and 2nd round action. They host Lamar Friday night and will face the winner of Wichita State and Rice on Saturday.

The Austin Regional's seeded teams are #3 seed Texas, #10 seed UCLA, #11 seed Oregon and #6 seed Minnesota. Oregon is coached by former Texas coach Jim Moore.

This draw is pretty good for Texas. Although the Wichita State matchup in the 2nd round will be very, very tough. Wichita State was undefeated through last week and lost over the weekend.

Volley for the Cure Wednesday

The Gregory Gazelles, also known as the UT women's volleyball team, will take on OU, also known as ousux, on Wednesday night at 6pm in a match billed as Volley for the Cure.

Volley for the Cure

This event is a great thing that NCAA women's athletics is doing for breast cancer awareness. Last February the women's hoops team had a Think Pink night when the Horns took down #8 Baylor. Now NCAA volleyball teams are getting into the act. Tickets are $3 if you buy in advance and you are suppose to wear pink.

This week marks the beginning of the 2nd round of Big 12 competition. The Gazelles have been through every Big 12 team once and stand at 9-1 with the sole blemish the loss to Nebraska in Lincoln. The script is falling in line with last year's where the plan is to sweep through the 2nd half of the season. To do so, the Gazelles have to take down Nebraska in Austin on November 19. They also will face the third, fourth & fifth place teams, in the Big 12 standings, on the road. They definitely have their work cut out for them.

The team is beginning to peak. So the undefeated run through the rest of the season is highly possible. Our libero concerns have been addressed in that Heather Kisner has locked down the role for the departed Alyson Jennings. Freshmen setter, Michelle Kocher, has done an admirable job setting for the 3rd ranked team in the country with a stable of the top veteran hitters in the country. She can still have nights where her sets are a bit off so that makes our road trips to K-State, Iowa State and Baylor a little bit scary. Juliann is still in a bit of a sophmore slump but she keeps swinging away and Elliott is now subbing her in the back row for Hawaiian defensive specialist, Sydney Yogi. Jen Doris came alive last week against Tech so we'll need more of that to further balance our offense. Ashley, Destinee & Pao continue to pound the cover off the ball.

It all begins this week with a homestand against our southern rivals: OU on Wednesday and A&M on Saturday. The aggie match has been moved to 5 pm to avoid conflict with the football broadcast. See you at Gregory! Wear pink on Wednesday and Orange on Saturday.

Saturday night while Texas was dismantling CU in Boulder, the Gregory Gazelles (aka Texas Volleyball) were dismantling Kansas State, 3-0. In so doing, they turned a 3 way tie (between UT, KSU & BU) for 2nd place in the Big 12 into just a tie between UT and BU. Wednesday night at Gregory Gym at 6:30pm, the Gazelles will look to move into sole possession of 2nd place when the Lady Bears come to town.

Everyone come out and support them in their quest for back-to-back Big 12 championships. If you bring 5 canned goods you can get a free pair of Crocs in the Cans for Crocs promotion. Additionally, you can use a web coupon for $4 general admission. In terms of value $4 is money well spent and I personally guarantee you will have a good time and get fired up for the upcoming weekend of football.

Bevo's Bargains for Wed Night

Also, a reminder that November is fast approaching. The Gazelles take on A&M on Saturday November 1 and the rematch with Nebraska is Wednesday November 19. Both of these matches sold out in advance last year, so get your tickets now!

The Gazelles open at home this week hosting the Time Warner Invitational. The Gazelles are ranked #3 in the nation returning to that spot after Stanford suffered a 4 set defeat to unranked Saint Louis last weekend. Coach Elliott gave me a personal call on my home phone yesterday requesting I invite friends and neighbors. So I'm inviting the BON community.

Bevo Bargains

$4 Web coupons for both night's matches at Bevo Bargains.

GAME 1 - 6:30 pm Thursday night against Texas State. Texas State is the preseason pick to win the Southland Conference. I expect this match to be the most competitive one for Texas in the tournament. By competitive, I mean a 3 set sweep by the Gazelles.

GAME 2 - Noon Friday against old SWC foe, Houston. Houston is picked to finish 6th in Conference USA. This match will be won handily by the Gazelles.

GAME 3 - 6:30 pm Friday against Georgia. Georgia is picked to finish 4th in the SEC East which includes Top 10 rated Florida. Georgia will likely finish 3rd in the East due to some serious injuries by 3rd place pick Tennessee. The best part of this match will be pregame when the Gazelles raise the 2007 Big 12 Championship banner to the rafters of Gregory Gym.

Both matches will be broadcast live on CBS College Sports (formerly CSTV). Friday night at 9:30 pm Texas will likely avenge last year's season ending loss to USC. Sunday at 12:30 Texas will have a smackdown with #2 ranked Stanford, the team that ended our 2006 season.

The Gazelles signed the nation's #2 ranked recruiting class. The link requires a membership but I'm sure the news will be posted on texassports.com shortly.

Just to remind everyone, Coach Elliott signed 6'2" middle blocker Rachel Adams (PHF posted the amazing picks of her vertical abilities), 6'3" OH Amber Roberson from San Antonio, 5'10" setter Michelle Kocher and 5'3" libero Sydney Yogi from Hawaii.

Adding these four to the mix of Lauren Paolini, Ashley Engle, Destinee Hooker and Juliann Faucette should give the Gazelles plenty of talent to win their first outright Big 12 Championship in over 10 years. In addition, if they can gel with the new setter (Engle or Kocher) they should be able to finally break through and make the final four.

Volleyball Spring Update

A few months ago it was announced that the volleyball team would go through the spring practice season with 7 players while Destinee, Juliann and Pao skipped the spring semester to train with the Olympic team. Needless to say, I was not optimistic about how we would do in the games. The good news is we managed an 8-1 record for the spring.

The schedule was not terribly challenging. Of the 9 teams we played this spring about a third made the NCAA tournament last fall. That being said, when you remove 3 All Americans from your lineup and are playing with only 2 starters a weak schedule does not guarantee wins.

Most of our "matches" were best 2 of 3 except for the Tulane game which was played in Austin and 5 games were played.

At Texas State, we beat all four teams in two games (games were played to 25 which is new for 2008). The most competitive match was against Texas State. They had most everyone back playing spring ball that played during their NCAA appearance in Austin. Texas State led most of the way during both games but Texas came back to win both. They demolished Lamar, Houston and St Edwards in all the game 1's. Lamar actually made a really good game of it in Game 2 holding a very late lead, but Texas clamped down and won.

Texas hosted Tulane two weeks ago. The teams played 5 games (4 to 24 and 1 to 15). Texas won games 1-3 and game 5 and Tulane won game 4.

Texas played in Houston this past weekend at the Texas Tornados facility in Cypress. Texas beat Arkansas and Notre Dame 2-1, swept SMU and lost to New Mexico State in 3.
NOTE: Tulane also played in Houston and beat USC!

Ashley handled setting duties and Heather played libero. Chelsey and Kiley were our OHs. Alex Lewis played DS and Jen Doris and Elizabeth Graham rotated back n forth playing both middle blocker positions and right side on the front line. We were quite challenged without our 6'2" and 6'4" OHs. Especially at the Tornados' event, teams were setting everything to the right side to take advantage of Kiley and Chelsey's smaller block. I have to admit I have reservations about Ashley setting, mostly because I like the offensive firepower she brings from playing the right side. However, by this last weekend she has won me over and she should be our setter this fall. Having every one of our offensive plays go through Ashley is a good thing! She was often the unsung hero when she played right side. When she sets, you really get to see what this girl is capable of on the court. She is a nightmare for blockers as they have no idea if she'll hit or set. And she knows when a defense is out of place and uses the dumps far more than Michelle.

I am very optimistic for the fall. Spring is not over yet, the girls go to San Diego in a few weeks for beach volleyball.
collegiate nationals

They also released the fall schedule:
2008 Schedule

In addition, Texas signed a 6'3" middle blocker from San Antonio this past week. She is coached in high school by Longhorn Legend, Demetria Sance.
UT signing

Texas opened up Big 12 Tourney play as the 7th seed taking on 10th seed Texas Tech.
Texassports.com Story

They picked up right where they left out last Wednesday winning by 12. In other news, 5th seeded OU lost to 12th seeded Missouri. The first time a 12 seed has ever won a game in the Big 12 tourney.

In Game 2, Texas takes down Baylor 76-61 after being down 16 at the half. Texas held Baylor to just 6 field goals in the second half! Anytime Coach Cajun Meth Queen (Mulkey) loses it's a good day in my book!

Next up, we get the winner of Kansas and Oklahoma State Thursday night.
