Tempestuous Binary

Feb 12, 2009 May 30, 2012 114 11827

Rumour has it that I was raised by wolves (which would explain my odd behaviour), but I know this not only to be not true, but also highly offensive to my parents, who may appear to be wolves to the untrained eye, but are actually just a rare breed of homo sapiens known as Madeirans.

My first goal in life is to learn as much as possible from the creatures (human or otherwise) I meet, the plants I have the opportunity to stop and observe, art in all its forms, the food I get to eat everyday, and every sunrise I'm fortunate enough to witness while simultaneously living in the most remote place I can find, and document this learning experience in any way I see fit, whether through the medium of words, music, film, photography, or (admittedly pretty bad) painting and sculpture. Well, you can't be good at everything. Anyway, hopefully by the time I've died, I'll have managed to weave all my disparate stories together to show just how rich, complex, and varied life on Planet Earth can be.

Also, while we're on the topic of me, I'd just like to bring to your attention the fact that I'm awesome, and if you don't like it, too bad, because that's just how I roll. B-)

According to Dater's sources, the Avs are talking to Hunwick, Jones, McClement, McLeod, and O’Brien. Most intriguing (and distressing) bit is that they have not started talks with O'Reilly's agent, yet.

Dater also adds that he thinks the Avs are "definitely interested" in re-signing Silent Jay and O'Brien.

Dater doesn't know the extent of it, beyond "lower-body".

How much of a role does sleep play in a hockey player's effectiveness? Found this intriguing video from Schoolyard Puck. Don't be scared off by the Canucks focus, there are many Nuckfails to make it worth it.

Gabriel Country Forest corrupt: "Does no more now"

News on Gabriel Country Forest's hip injury against Russia. Sweden coach Pär Mårts said, "It's all right. He got a bang. We take him away so that we do not challenge fate."

Along with Adam Henrique and Ryan Nugent-Hopkins.

(So, apparently, Twitter is going to make me a very annoying fanshotter. Please tell me if I'm posting too much inane news.)

According to his interview with Eurolanche. Hejda wanted to play in the World Championship, but was told by his doctor that "surgery is necessary as soon as possible."

Good luck, Jan, and thank you for gutting it out!

The Avs' 2007 fifth round pick signed a two-year deal. There appears to be some confusion as to with whom, exactly, he signed, so to clarify: he signed with the Avs, but will report to Lake Erie for their playoff race/run.

He is an Avalanche

Downie, by the way, has been playing hurt for about three weeks with a shoulder injury. He might have a slight separation in fact. And Duchene has also been playing hurt. His ankle/knee are not 100 percent.

In a recent mailbag, Dater confirmed what some, including me, have posited regarding Downie's lack of production.

It is also worth stating that Duchene is in the same boat as Downie, so any leeway we give Downie, should also be given to Duchene, who, as stated before, is not the same player as in the beginning of the season. I think it's fair to call him out for his performance pre-injury, but expecting an 80-point player after it is just unfair. I realise expectations are higher with him, but that doesn't give one the right to criticise excessively.

"Having wrapped up his four year career with the Seattle Thunderbirds, who didn’t make the postseason, Pickard was whisked away to Cleveland, Ohio to begin his transition into the AHL."

Connolly was also reassigned.

Mile High Hockey #MattDucheneProblems

I believe that anyone who says Matt Duchene has been a non-factor in the last number of games, including the one last night against the Flames, must not be watching. Because, frankly, I am noticing him just as much, if not more than Ryan O'Reilly (whose toughness after being whacked in the face is remarkable, by the way).

While his offensive game seems to have abandoned him, he has not stopped working to improve elsewhere, specifically on the defensive end. Against the Flames, Duchene had one excellent goal-saving defensive play in front of the net worthy of mention. If you check the replay, you will see Semyon Varlamov leave a pretty, little rebound for a Calgary player behind the net, who then wisely shoots it to a teammate streaking in front of the net (by which I mean he was barrelling down on Varlamov, not exposing himself to his teammate, thus incurring his wrath). Save for Duchene, there was no one there to help Varly, who otherwise would have had to make a butt-clenching save or be the recipient of a predictable goal (much like Calgary’s lone goal). What does Dutchy do? Calmly collects the puck, turns to an empty expanse of ice, and clears it perfectly. Flames have to regroup in the neutral zone, and the Avs are given the chance to breathe after a momentary throttling by their opponent.

Fear The Fin Blanket Trends: An Analysis of Daniel Winnik’s EV TOI, PP TOI, SH TOI, and TOI through November, 2011

Blanket Trends was a Mile High Hockey-based project attempting to understand Daniel Winnik's ice time trends in context throughout the month of November, 2011. Now that Winnik is a Shark (saying that still doesn't feel right), I decided to post this here as well in case any Sharks fans are interested. Below is the full article.

I. INTRODUCTION

In "Mis-management?", Mike @ MHH established that Daniel Winnik led the team in even-strength Time on Ice (EV TOI), 368:36 total versus Ryan O'Reilly's 365:39 at No. 2; averaging 15:21, ahead of Ryan O'Reilly with 15:14. For the month of November, Winnik was ahead of Matt Duchene, 15:21:37 to 15:11:05.

In Daniel Winnik and the Coach of Doom., An Unmitigated Disaster stated that Winnik is "playing about 18-21 minutes a game over the last 15 games or so," according to this source.

Although this may be enough evidence to form an opinion on Winnik's role with the team, neither articles answer the question posed by Mike @ MHH in the comments section of "Stars at Avalanche Recap, Avs lose 3-1":

Is [Winnik's ES TOI of 14:40 against the Dallas Stars] indicative of the last 6-8 games or was this an outlier?

In this article, I will attempt to answer that question and more.

"I can't even lie about that," Lloyd said. "I'm tied to McDaniels. He uses me differently than other offensive coordinators used me in my entire career. He uses me as an every-play receiver. The short game, mid-range game, gimmick passes, deep balls.

"I do everything in this offense as opposed to other coordinators who would just run me off as the deep guy; run me off into double coverage and then say I'm not open. So I really like how Josh uses me within the offense. I'm extremely comfortable in the offense. So that is definitely going to be a. ...

At this point Lloyd paused and didn't finish the thought.

Rams' Lloyd will follow McDaniels.

Apologies if this has been mentioned before. This is one boon for the Chiefs if they get McDaniels - the WR corps instantly improves.

Turf Show Times Schefter: McDaniels' influence still felt in Denver

Some may be interested in this. Some may not. I felt it was worth posting, in a time where positivity and the conception of this team's staff as competent individuals are missing.

Tebow has reinvigorated a city and a franchise. He has led the Broncos to victories in four straight games in which they trailed in the fourth quarter. He now has a fourth-quarter or overtime game-winning drive in six of his 11 starts, more than any other player in NFL history.

No wonder that in an op-ed piece last Sunday, the New York Times dubbed him "The Mile-High Messiah." But it's worth noting who first authored this story. It is the head coach who Broncos fans and the Denver organization wanted out. At a time when no other coach would, McDaniels packaged picks -- one of which came from Miami for Pro Bowl wide receiver Brandon Marshall to select the draft's most polarizing player. Some publicly applauded the Broncos. Many more privately mocked them.

Yet McDaniels, now the St. Louis Rams' offensive coordinator, always has known things about quarterbacks that others didn't. He elevated Tom Brady's game to arguably the highest level of his career. He boosted up backup Matt Cassel and made him a $40 million quarterback in Kansas City. And he recognized what Tebow could do whereas others commented on all he couldn't do. Now McDaniels' prized pupils, Brady and Tebow, are preparing to battle in this week's game of the week. Sunday's matchup is a testament to McDaniels' work, and why he still will be in demand despite St. Louis' struggles.

Mile High Hockey The Conclusion of Professor Utonium's Experiment on Colliding Objects

Professor Utonium has finally reported the results of his experiment on colliding objects.  In this experiment, the Department of Object Collision took a maple leaf and an avalanche, put them in the same room, and then observed what transpired.  To my shock, despite some old dudes apparently surviving an avalanche that one time, Professor Utonium did not rule an automatic victory for the maple leaf because it is a maple leaf.  Check below to see Professor Utonium's conclusion and recommendation moving forward.

Mile High Hockey Pick the Song that will Annoy Tempestuous Binary for the Entire Avs Season

My girlfriend and I spent a long weekend travelling around the Netherlands, so I missed the last pre-season game.  Halfway through the trip, I managed to get on a computer (I don't carry a smartphone and the like) and, of course, the first thing I did was check MHH.  I was happy to find that I hadn't really missed anything.  Then when I got home, and what the heck!  All this new content had sprung up!  I missed a lot of stuff in those final days.

Anyway, I've gotten up to speed, now, and for those that don't know, it's time to select the song that will ring through my ears for the next 82 (+?) games.

Poll
Which song should Tempestuous Binary dance to before every Avalanche game for the 2011/12 season?
Mastodon - "Blood and Thunder"
10 votes
Cristophe Héral - "Hyllian Suite"
1 votes
Killswitch Engage - "Desperate Times"
3 votes
Intronaut - "Core Relations"

MFW a website says they've been praising the Varly trade all along, and I check their archives and realise they've been bagging it at every turn.

Although this is annoying, I'm hoping to see more of it in the coming season (because it'll mean the Avs are winning), and thank goodness for the Wayback Machine, because no matter how quick everyone will be falling over themselves to edit the past, none will be able to hide from the truth.

I think my favorite team, just like a lot of others', was Detroit. I watched their games against Colorado, and it left an impression. I had two favorite teams: Colorado and Detroit. Detroit, first of all, because of the Russians. It was nice to watch Fedorov, Fetisov.

Evgeni Malkin on his favourite teams. Just found that interesting, fwiw.

NHL 2002. 5 games into the 2003 season. Signed Sacco for lulz. "Drafted" David Jones. Foppa destroying opposing goalies, even on the higher difficulty. Jones had 4 goals and then got injured twice in the fifth game. Now he's out for 2 weeks. FML. Even in a videogame, he can't stop injuring himself.

New Nashville Predators logos.

All I can say is, "Nooooooooooooooo." I always liked the old logo and word font; now it's more minimalist with a new shoulder patch that looks like a Dragon Ball Z guitar pick.

Mile High Hockey The Thread in which We Discuss HFBoards Trade Rumours.

Yes, it has a period full stop.  And, yes, it has a "u".  That's how I roll: the British way.  Which is in circles.  I passed a roundabout in Germany, and it wasn't even round.  I stood there for 39 minutes, trying to figure it out.  Turns out I wasn't at a roundabout, after all, but a trapezoidabout.  Well, you live and learn.

Mile High Hockey Re: Dream Team

I hope y'all don't mind me creating a new post instead of just putting this in the comments section. It took me longer to write than I'm willing to admit, and when I pasted it in the comment box, I realised it was huge - possibly too big for a comment.

Yes, I realise Andidee's post just called for some lines, but I'm not going to be held liable for having my imagination pop out of my head and run wild.  If you don't know this already, don't get my imagination started, because once it wakes up, I go crazy.  This crazy.  You've been warned.

The Attack won 6-4, thanks to a late empty-netter that put the game away. Joey Hishon was a +1 with 2 assists that came on the power play.

Owen Sound lead the series 2-1.

Owen Sound won 8-1. They started rusty, but soon found their form, with the game-winning goal coming at at 19:51 of the 1st period. On the PK, Garrett Wilson dropped the puck to Joey Hishon, who wired one past goalie Jack Campbell for his 1st of 2 goals.

The Attack beat the Plymouth Whalers 4-1 to take a 3-0 series lead. As we've all come to expect, they peppered the Whalers, going up 4-0 by the end of the 2nd. In the 3rd, the Whalers fought back, getting a goal while dominating in shots, but it wasn't enough as the Attack put themselves on the cusp of advancing to the next round.

Joey Hishon was held without a point. Can't make any specific comments as I missed most of the game.

He also tallied an assist in the Attack's 3-2 OT win tonight. The Attack were down 1-0 at the end of the first, but peppered the Knights from then on, finishing the game with 53 shots to 23.
