In addition to signing third-rounder Roger Kieschnick on Wednesday, the Giants also inked fourth-rounder Brandon Crawford. The UCLA shortstop, a projected first-rounder before a disappointing spring, received a $375,000 bonus, matching the fourth-highest in the fourth round this year.

Bumped. This is a blockbuster commit for Howland. Welcome to UCLA Brendan. GO BRUINS. -N

Jill Painter reports:

Brendan Lane, a power forward out of Rocklin High of Fresno, committed to UCLA today.
``I wanted to play at a big-time school with the chance to win a national championship and learn defense from a coach like Ben Howland,'' Lane told Tim Haddock.

Lane is listed at 6'9" and 200 lbs. Both Scout.com and Rivals.com rank him as the #20 power forward in the nation in the class of 2009. According to MaxPreps, Lane averaged 20.4 points, 11.7 rebounds, and 5.2 blocks per game this past season.

Found this on ESPN.com regarding Lane:

Lane is one of the fastest rising juniors in the country. He is a hybrid four-man with solid perimeter skills. He has a long frame, quick feet, and soft hands. He is quite bouncy and has the quickness to take defenders off the dribble as well. He has the ability to fill the lane on the break and can either finish with an array of athletic moves or pull up for the three-point shot. His jump shot is solid with a fairly decent release and it should get better as he gets stronger. Lane has solid inside-out skills. He has a nice drop-step and a very good touch around the basket; however, he does have a tendency to settle for too many three-point attempts. He is a good rebounder and his outlet pass is solid as well. Overall, as his body tones up he needs to become more comfortable playing in the paint area and continue to develop his perimeter skills. Has a chance to be a high major player one day.

UCLA's Lin and Zalameda win NCAA doubles title

This afternoon, UCLA seniors Tracy Lin and Riza Zalameda won the NCAA women's tennis doubles championship! This news comes just six days after UCLA's women's tennis team won the team championship (there are separate titles for team, doubles, and singles).

From UCLABruins.com :

UCLA's Tracy Lin and Riza Zalameda became the sixth team in school history to capture the NCAA Doubles Championship, posting a three-set victory over Fresno State's Melanie Gloria/Tinesta Rowe at Tulsa's Michael D. Case Tennis Center on Monday.

Lin and Zalameda, seeded No. 1 in the NCAA Doubles draw, posted a 6-2, 4-6, 6-3 victory over the second-seeded tandem of Gloria and Rowe in Monday's final. They are the first Bruin team to capture the NCAA Doubles title since Daniela Bercek and Lauren Fisher in 2004.

This championship is not a team title, and so it doesn't add in number to UCLA's 102 NCAA team championships. However, it is an amazing achievement in its own right that everyone in Bruins Nation can be proud of! I am extremely happy for Tracy - I'm also a senior at UCLA, and I have known her since freshman orientation. She is a great student and an even better person!

By the way, UCLA fans should take note that our last two championship-winning teams were led by Anaheim Canyon High School alumni - Courtney Mathewson (women's water polo) and Tracy Lin. Since we have Jerime Anderson, another Canyon Comanche, coming to UCLA next year, maybe this is a premonition that the men's basketball team will hang a 12th banner in Pauley Pavilion in the very near future!
