Battle Red Blog Charles Spencer.

Ok, so I'm more than a little biased when it comes to Charles, he's a great guy, and we had a blast hanging out for the draft earlier this year..  That all said, with all the Texans O-linemen droping with injuries, wouldn't now be great time to bring Charles back.. he is part of the legendary 2006 draft class for the texans..  Has been working out like a mad man, and already knows the texans system.. just seems like a great oppertunity to see if he's been able to fully recover from his injury.  Give him a bit of preseason playing time, since he already knows the system, if it works out  awesome, if not maybe he can catch on with another team, either way you need some more Oline guys in camp!

Battle Red Blog Live From Texans Training Camp....

So I'm going to try a new concept today. Since I'm at training camp this morning, I'm going to try to do a live post, adding notes to the thread as we go. This gets me around the Twitter limit on letters and also allows for a bit more comprehensive discussions. So here goes...I got here about 20 till 7 (when the gates open). Line was already in place but not too long...I'm behind maybe 200 people...but I'm going to look for a spot that can get good pictures from when I walk in the gate. I well attempt to post those live also if the tech behaves....

Battle Red Blog AFC South Eternal Thread #8: "Gameday bleach..."

Hello, fellow AFC South fans! A new concept we're going to be trying out this season is a 24-hour open thread for fans of AFC South teams located in the FanPosts section of Battle Red Blog (a special thanks to Tim for allowing such nonsense).  A place where football fans can get together and chat about a variety of topics ranging from football to foot fetishes. Just think of it as your favorite bar/hang-out spot where you can get to know your fellow divisional fans on a more relaxed and personal basis. The point of this thread will be to bring us, the fans of the greatest division in all of the NFL, together for some friendly conversation and camaraderie.

  • Nothing will be considered off-topic other than the usual religion/politics.
  • Check your hostilities at the door. All previous problems you have had with other AFC South fans will be considered forgotten when you enter the thread. You may encounter others who seem to be ragging on each other. Please don't jump into the argument like you own the place. Things aren't what they always appear to be. It's probably people who know each other extremely well participating in some inside-joking or friendly ribbing.
  • This is not a Game Thread! There are threads already dedicated to this, and for good reason . It's the same reason why I don't watch Pats/Colts games with my Pats-loving brother-in-law anymore. Things get crazy real quick. The Colts game threads will be hosted at Coltzilla.
  • No trolling, please. If the only thing you have to say is, "Colts/Texans/Jags/Titans SUUUUUUUCK!!!1!!1" you're not going to make very many friends.
  • If you are having problems with someone in the thread, please email me and we can work together to resolve the issue in-house. Our hope is that this thread will be self-regulated by the fans themselves and won't need any outside intervention. If you don't like what you see, treat it as any other unpalatable link you have clicked on in the past. Apply eye-bleach and move along.
  • Have fun! We're all fans and fellow pathetic computer nerds. We have more in common with each other than we have with most everyone else in the real world. Try to remember that.
  • Try to keep the thread "safe for work" since a lot of the threaders may be viewing from the job site. In other words, I love boobs, but my boss doesn't. He's a dick.

In the beginning, myself, peytonsurdaddy, and Shake, from BRB will be hosting the threads. As time goes on we'd like to add a representative from both the Titans and Jaguars fans as well. You may lobby for the position by sending cash proving yourself to have a level head and basically nothing better to do with your life.

Thanks,

peytonsurdaddy

Battle Red Blog The PC thought police

Ok so here is the deal if you have been off the planet for a couple of days.  The Jets had an issue, there was an attractive lady working their beat this week, and when she was in the locker room they acted like morons and did some cat calling and such.  I'm fine with them getting in trouble for that, I can't do that at my job it’s disrespectful and unprofessional.  So they got a talking to as they should have.  I don't like the incident but it was handled and hopefully will not be repeated.

Here is what I have a problem with.  Clinton Portis made a comment on his radio show about the incident and got a ton of criticism about it, he's now been called a sexist, caveman, and a verity of other things.  It got to the point that he had to make an apology.  So what may you asked caused this uproar?    After the Jump

Battle Red Blog Colts @ Texans Coaching successes

Let me just say as apposed to Kerns I’m a Kubs guy.  I think he is a good coach.  That said it isn’t by accident that he became a good coach.  I don’t know how much some of you folks watched Kubs career, but here is my summary.  A&M = very good player. Denver Broncos backup QB, he spent years holding a clip board and learning the finer points of offence and the few times Elway went down he played very good backup football.  I believe from seeing those years that he could have been a starter on many teams in the NFL, but he wanted to coach down the road, so he stayed a backup and learned, for those of you who don’t remember he had headphone on a lot as a player and even called some plays as the backup QB.  After leaving the Broncos as a player it was off to learn the coaching trade (already having a big head start) it was back to A&M for a whole year then off to SF for a little experience, the to the Broncos with Big Shan, working his way up quickly to O Cord.  Now let me say the guy was a great O cord and helped lead the Broncos to a couple of Superbowl wins and a lot of 1000 yard rushers that came from nowhere.  This is all the stuff that is the good side of his coaching.

Battle Red Blog AFC south BBS Poll Just for fun.

Since I am a BRB contributer and am pretty sure it is impossible to be banned here except for SPAM-ing a lot.  And because I have noticed that many of us have something in common, that we have been banned from SB on at least one occasion and have likely have had a combined tens of thousands of posts disappear.  I though I would give us a little place where we could (free from censorship)  share our opinions for the leaders of SBNation to see.

Edit and FYI

I just want to say, I posted this because as a general rule I like forums to be open with a verity of opinions and viewpoints.  I think this adds to the depth and breadth of both readership and information available to the fans.  And in general I would say I’m just pro free speech.  That is really the only issue I have ever really had with BBS.  It is my understanding that BBS was around since nearly the beginning of SB nation and has made contributions to the whole community by helping to bring in many of the great moderators and authors that we all enjoy today.  He also regularly contributes to the SB community via comments and articles.  Thanks BBS for 95% of what you do.  However I would really like to see the censorship issue addressed.

Battle Red Blog 16, 17 or 18 regular season games?

Now we all know how the current 16 game system works so, I won’t go into that.  But the primary option that is discussed is the 18 game season.  That is basically laid out so that you drop a couple of preseason games, and add a couple of regular season games.  To make up for the extra playing time they would likely pro rate the players contracts to pay for the extra playing time, and add a couple of spots to the roster, or make it so you have a short and long term DL list more like baseball.  It’s still a little unclear as to how the scheduling would work ie which other two teams would they play?  So lets go through the pros and cons from each interested groups prospective.
Owners, coaches first
Pros
More TV revenue, Happier fans, they are already charging full price for preseason tickets so ticket sales are a wash, oh did I mention more revenue?
Cons
Will likely have to pay players more, will have to make decisions on players with less real playing time, could lead to more meaning less games near the end of season.
Players
Pros
More MONEY, which we know all players love.
Cons
A lot more ware on their already bruised bodies.  Might be harder for UDFA’s to crack a roster without a full preseason.
Fans
Pros
MORE FOOTBALL!!!!
Cons
I don’t know, as a fan can you think of a reason not to want more football?
So I don’t know from the prospective of the guys making decisions it looks like this isn’t the most appealing option, and I’m not sure the owners would make any more money once they pay the players.

So let me propose a third option
Expand the system to 17 games in the season and 3 preseason.  Now take the 17th game and use it to promote the NFL around the world! Put it in Rome, London, Rio, Mexico City, Tokyo, … This give you 16 regular season games every year to put somewhere else, and promote the league around the globe.  Take the gate money from that game and give it 66% to the owner that is one pregame short and 33% to the other owner.  Also make this 17th game a rivalry game, say Texans, Cowgirls or Jets, Giants or Pittsburg, Philly you get the idea.  One extra game would be like getting rid of the 4th preseason game which is almost unwatchable anyway and replacing it with a great meaningful game.
What say you?

So How many regular season games should they play?

Battle Red Blog Put your name on it redux.

I thought it would be nice to go back and see how good we are at predicting the future.  And predictably enough we suck!!!  My own 12-4 fell far short of accurate.  And I think most of us where surprised by which games where wins and which where losses.  I was off by 3 games, but got all of my losses right but one.  I missed on the second Indy game, the Jets game, the loss to the BSEF’s @ home, and 2 losses to Jac.  It does convince me though that if we can win in the conference we can easily make the playoffs.  It seemed like a lot of you did pretty well on the record.

How did you do?.

Battle Red Blog The truth and Brian Cushing

Let me first say that the general pattern and the history of steroid accusations against Cushing, going back as far as high school, would make one tend to not believe him.  To simply say he did it and finally got caught, and now won't even fess up is the easy road to take.  In fact when I first started listening to Mr. Cushing read his statement I began to think exactly that.  But then he started answering questions, and it struck me that his voice was very normal and relaxed.  That was not at all what I would have expected.   For just a second I thought wow he might actually be telling the truth.    Then I thought well what should he sound and look like if in fact he is lying?

For years now I have been using some police lie detecting techniques on my kids and the occasional co-worker, they work very well with all but my oldest, who I think is now wise to my techniques.  At any rate there are certain things, that are pretty common to liars, one place in particular is their eyes very often will give away what part of their brains they are using.  When they look to their left they are usually telling the truth and, looking to the right is often lying, this is reversed with left handed people.  They tend to pause before answering questions, they tend to not use all of their face when making expressions, and they hold those expressions too long.  They also often avoid eye contact or have a forced constant eye contact.  When, listening to questions, they tend to space out of the question early because their mind is making up an answer, or they begin to answer before the questioner is done.  In addition their voice will tend to change pitch a little.  If you don't believe me feel free to google "how to tell if someone is lying"

So, knowing all of this I decided to go through the video from today to determine of any of this was present.  I also found an old video of the guy answering questions to get a bit of a baseline on the guy.   Here

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rvJA4QmGFJM

First I ignored the part when he was reading from a written statement, because the speech and visual cues are much more like to be related to how well he reads and someone else very likely wrote or helped write the statement.

http://www.myfoxhouston.com/dpp/sports/nfl/100513-texans-brian-cushing

So I did it in three stages first played the video, with no sound.  And mad a note as to which question, numbers, he visually looked to have any of the above clues, ie facial expressions, and eye movements, and eye contact with the questioner.  On all but two questions, he looked very truthful, and those he didn't appear dishonest, just more neutral.  In face his eyes almost always maintained the correct amount of eye contact and when his eyes moved to one side or the other it was his left, again a good sign.

In addition he often shook his head in agreement, with the questioner, and never seemed to look ridged or fidgety, though occasionally he looked like his jaw was clinched.

Then I listened to the audio only without looking at the video.  And again was amazed at the apparent truthfulness of his answers, his voice, was even pitch, on extend pauses before answering, no running over the questioner.

Then finally I looked at it with both video and sound.   And again notice a profound lack of indicators of lying, body language was matching his words, some minor hand gesturing, but not exaggerated.

So my conclusion is that he is one of three things, he is a professional lier ( trained by the FBI, CIA, or NSA),  that he is a sociopath(possible given how mean he is to opponents on Sundays), or He was telling the TRUTH.

So there you have it my 3.5 cents worth!

What say you?

Battle Red Blog 2007 Draft Grade

Round Pick (Overall) Player Position School

1 10 (10) Amobi Okoye DT Louisville

3 9 (73) Jacoby Jones WR Lane

4 24 (123) Fred Bennett CB South Carolina

5 7 (144) Brandon Harrison S Stanford

5 26 (163) Brandon Frye G Virginia Tech

6 9 (183) Kasey Studdard G Texas

7 8 (218) Zach Diles LB Kansas State University

What grade would you give to the 2007 draft.

I’ve always heard that you cant grade draft for 3 years, well it’s been 3 years since the 2007 draft.  Tell us what you think with a little more info.

Based on each pick in the draft here is what I think

Amobi Okoye  I would now call him a reach, That said the when compared to some of the guys we missed, this was a huge miss, Amobi was the 10th pick, at 11 we missed Patrick Willis, at 12 we missed Marshawn Lynch and at 14 we missed Darrelle Revis.  That hurts a lot to look at.

Jacoby Jones, looked at the time as a small school project, with a lot of upside, and that is what he has turned into, he’s a solid receiver and any time he gets the ball he makes a big play.  I am thrilled that I wont have to hold my breath everytime there is a kick off.  Knowing the odds of a fumble or a TD where equal.

Fred Bennett CB  About what you expect from a 4th rounder ok but not great, and not a consistent starter.

Brandon Harrison Who is this again

Brandon Frye  Apparently Brandon is a bad name to have if you want to be successful in the NFL

Kasey Studdard           I’m still shocked that he is considered starter material, but I would call this overall a solid 6th round pick.

Zach Diles  Is a classic over achiever,  Everytime some one with more talent challenges him for the spot at WILL/SAM he seems to win out.  But has been a starter for 2 years, this is a great 7th round pick up.

Battle Red Blog Why Tebow wasn’t a reach.

Let me say up-front that I believe that the most successful NFL QB’s are the classic pocket passer.   The things that make these guys good are 3 things

1++.   Good decision making, in all situations!  This is the defining trait of all successful QB’s  Be it Manning, Brady, Brees, or even our own Schaub.  This is also why a lot of us Broncos fans where happy to see Cutler go because the system he was in under Mike Shanahan limited the number of mental mistakes, but once in the bears system he fell apart (2x more turnovers than any other QB last year).

2.   Sufficient arm and accuracy.  I only say sufficient, as many of the most successful QB’s don’t have cannons for arms but enough of an arm to be a deep threat, and to make the 20 yard out.  Beyond doing that even some of this can be worked around (Ie Kyle Orton, whom I can out throw but was never asked to throw the long ball in Denver last year and was relatively successful in spite of an utter lack of arm)

3.   Ability read Defenses and adjust. This is the specialty of Peyton, but is also something that Brady and Brees do with expertise.

For my money if I grade on these parameters, I would put Tebow as a first round pick,

For 1 He was excellent at this, and in the Denver system he will not be asked to a lot of this up front, most of that system is timing routs, and this is clearly a Tebow strength.  In addition as much as I hate VY one thing I think he showed the entire NFL last year, was that a QB who can choose to run the ball instead of force a pass, can be a very hard thing to defend. This is what Tebow is great at.  This reduces the chances of throwing a int, and creases the chances of busting a quick first down, like VY did to us several times in the second Titans vs. Texans game last year.

Number 2, I will say that if there is a question about, Tebow it is this, but not sufficiency of arm, just the mechanics of his throwing,  I’m not sure this is a killer, however, I do think that it could be made worse by changing the motion, if it effects his accuracy.  This to me is the biggest risk by far.

3.  I think this is good right now, because he played in a D heavy SEC.  That said, with the smarts I don’t see how this won’t end up being a strength for him, over time, but ill take plenty of film work, and experience.

I where to give Timmy my advise I would say.

Play to your strengths, good decisions, and lots of film work.

Use your legs to avoid sacks and add another option when receivers are covered.

If you want to fix your mechanics,  spend a lot of time making sure the accuracy isn’t effected, by the change in mechanics!

Battle Red Blog Would you trade for--

Albert Haynesworth?

I was reading something that said that the redskins where trying to trade him for McNabb instead of the draft picks, but Philly didn’t want the contract.  This makes a lot of since when combined with the well publicized hate of the 3-4 of Fat Albert.  I think he would love to play for the Texans and he could make a big impact.    I would trade a second rounder to Washington for him.

Any thoughts

Battle Red Blog Is there somethng these guys know

In my continued tracking interesting coaching moves that are somewhat related to the Texans and Broncos,

I ran across a quote that came from Mike Shanahan this week in reference to Tim Tebow

Shanahan, who prefers to scout quarterbacks in person, offered his first public comments about Tebow's workout on Wednesday, saying "I like everything about him," according to the report.

"Here's a guy to me that brings everything to the table. He'll interview with 30 people, work out for everybody, when you're with him, he's just an off-the-chart guy," Shanahan said of Tebow, according to the report. "Those guys don't come around all the time. Especially with the success that he's had."

from an article on ESPN.

Remember these are the guys who just brought in The Sex Cannon (Who I think will surprise a lot of people when he gets to be the starter in Washington this year) has worked with Steve Young, Joe Montana, John Elway,  Jay Cutler (before Chicago destroyed another talented QB), and our own Matt Schaub.  I just found it interesting that Shanahan was so brash with his support for Tebow.  Does he know something that the "scouts" don't?

So is Shanahan The elder right about Tim Tebow

Battle Red Blog Top Sleeper Pic contest

So here is the Deal, I want to run a little contest, everyone come up with their top sleeper pick.

You must post it on this thread prior to the first pick of the draft.   If your guy is picked in the first 2 rounds then they are disqualified from the contest.  (As they cant really be a sleeper if someone used an number 1 or 2 pick on them).

At the end of next season we will review and pick a winner.

Also if 2 people pick the same pic the person that posted it first will win.

Below the Jump is my pick

Battle Red Blog My new goal

After watching the Cowgirls loose today, I have a new goal for next year.

For our beloved Texans to win the AFC title then win the Superbowl in the new cowgirls stadium!

How nice would it to win a SB in the Cowgirls house!

Just my thought for the day but this is what I'm now cheering for for next year.

I also want to beat every team in our division twice just for good measure,

Any thoughts?
