Trading Floodgates Open: Dallas D Grossman to Philly

3

Sorry about the Puck Daddy link, it just had info from a couple of sources. Anyway, stay-at-home Grossman was getting the 5th most minutes for Dallas D-men and he was moved for Philly's 2012 2nd rounder (through LA) and 2013 3rd (through Minn). Throw in his contract ending after this season and that seems like a bit of a steal for Dallas. What does this mean for us as we move or gain players?

NHL In 2025: We're Gone?

6

Before you lose your mind, let me assure you that Canadian Business is writing for a select crowd (Canada). This becomes very apparent when they have 4 NHL teams moving up north by 2025 (Phoenix-Quebec in 2012, Florida-Kitchener in 2013, Isles-Toronto in 2015, and Nashville-Vancouver in 2024). In reality this may just be more of an exercise in how Canada is a more viable candidate for successful NHL franchises, but that argument is driven mainly by the successful relocation to Winnipeg.

Shanahan explains PL3, Shelley suspensions; Gillies, Martin, Haley (Nielsen!), listen up

7

Above link is for PL3, here is Shelley PL3 = suspended 4 preseason, 1 season game Shelley = suspended 5, 5 He makes it seem so easy for displaying complete transparency in the decision making. Why was this so difficult before? It also seems some players will have difficulty adjusting to thinking about their checks instead of employing ramming speed at any nearby object.

Grant Wahl Takes On Restructuring The MLS Playoffs

14

It's an intriguing idea. Unfortunately we get grouped in with not only our I-5ers, but two of the more successful clubs in Colorado and RSL. I am torn about the 3 neutral games, as it could do wonders for the growth of soccer, but steals home games (not to mention the lack of attendance that would inevitably occur for the smaller/struggling teams). This is my first post/shot here. Been reading for a bit and finally took the plunge.

Sabres Jump On The Young Player Extensions Bandwagon

5

(link goes to CapGeek) Tyler Myers extended for 7 years at $38.5 millions. When it starts in his age 22 season he makes $12 millions and then it eventually drops to the final year of $3 millions in his age 28 season. This is definitely weird. Does anyone have a clue as to why the contract is structured in such a manner?

Kinda OT, but GRIT appears often

+

NYT article on some school headmasters attempting to find the correct formula to develop students. They meet a Psych prof and learn some fun things and create a two page evaluation to determine the strength of 7 character traits. And more happens than I can accurately sum up here. It's a great read, but every time 'grit' is mentioned I can't help thinking of baseball, BBWAA, and David Eckstein. Then there's this quote: "Sure, a trait can backfire," Witter said. "Too much grit, like Okonkwo, you start to lose your ability to have empathy for other people. If you’re so gritty that you don’t understand why everyone’s complaining about how hard things are, because nothing’s hard for you, because you’re Mr. Grit, then you’re going to have a hard time being kind..."

SI Player Poll: Smartest in MLB

6

I believe there may be some need to define in what respect they meant smartest: Smartest ballplayer or Smartest ballplayer. The majority of these guys were drafted straight out of HS or IFAs and while I don't want to be quick to judge, there can still be a wide gap between an Ivy Leaguer and someone who spent more time ballin' than learnin'. Here's a test: Derek Jeter, Chris Young (Pitcher), Alex Cora. Who made the list?

Yahoo "Ranks" Top 25 LW In NHL

6

MattyMo can be considered lucky in that he is placed in Honorable Mentions. Ryan Clowe, Jamie Benn, Tyler Ennis, Christ Kunitz, Rene Bourque, RJ Umberger, Ray Whitney, Thomas Fleischmann, and arguably Magnus Paajarvi had nary a mention (and probably a bunch of others...Mustache Ride?). Meanwhile both Alexandre Burrows and Daniel Sedin are listed despite playing on the same line (the old C-LW-LW combo), the declining Simon Gagne and Ryan Smyth rear their flowing locks, and perhaps most glaring of all is #25, Sean Bergenheim...W.T.F.

Would And Should The Mets Chase Anibal Sanchez?

19
Link goes to a FanGraphs piece on Sanchez's availability and appeal. If we maintain our current run back to respectability, we could conceivably do with a pitcher that doesn't go all Pelfrey on us. Sanchez would come at a cost as he comes with one arbitration year remaining and also happens to be pretty damn good. But would this fit in with Sandy's long-term plan. Do we pass and look for cheaper options? Do we package an overachieving starter with some other prospects (the unsaber Valdespin for instance) to cleanse the system of Minaya's grubby hands? Do we go on a losing streak and traid teh core? Please discuss and create your deals.

Another Mock Draft: SI Likes To Be Different

Isles draft Strome, Couturier goes 6th, Dougie 9th. Grimaldi doesn't appear. If he truly does drop to the 2nd (hint: probably not), I say we move up.

While We're Trying to Protect Players' Heads, How About The Whole Body?

7

Obviously there seems to be no precedent here, so I'm not saying the league should suspend Boychuk, but if they had bothered to think about checking fully then he would be suspended. Think about it (or watch the video some more). If you're checking someone in a manner that prevents them from being able to absorb the hit safely (in this case bent over) you should back off. Boychuk already had him tied up and bent in half, so Raymond wasn't about to go skating off, all he had to do was turn slightly to prevent ramming a player into the ungiving boards. Instead Raymond is out for 4 months with a vertebrae compression fracture. Dear NHL, think more when you're trying to make up for horrendous decision making.

MLB2K11 Perfect Game

"Fast forward to this April and "Halladay" was perfect again, except this one was a video game and earned 25-year-old Brian Kingrey $1 million in the MLB2K11 Perfect Game Challenge." Blah. "He practiced about four to five hours a day and got the perfect game on his third try on Opening Day. Kingrey said he watches more baseball now and is a newly minted Phillies fan." Ass. "Last year, Wade McGilberry won the Perfect Game contest using Kenshin Kawakami of the Atlanta Braves to record a perfect game against the New York Mets." DAMNIT!

Released Players And Salaries (Castillo Reports to Phillies)

2

Can someone clear something up for me? The Mets released Castillo and eat his $6 million, then the Phillies sign him to the MLB minimum, so does he get that plus the 6mil, or do the Mets pay (6mil - 414,500)? Then, if Castillo doesn't make the Phillies and gets released, only to be picked up by say the Padres (interest in Luis Hernandez?) what happens salary-wise then? Is it conceivable that a Castillo signed and released 12 times would have little cost to the Mets or am I just pipe dreaming?

Fodder against those saying Pens don't sucker punch (2/1/11 Pens-Rags). This is closer to the Martin incident than the Martin incident is to Crazed Bertuzzi. Staal is facing Prust when he punches him, but it's clear that Prust isn't expecting a punch.

Dep Commish Daly: Islanders within rights suspending Nabokov

1

Clears up some issues regarding waivers: "We were worried about the integrity aspect of those types of transactions and passed this rule, a very broad rule, that says if a player plays a game in a European league after the start of our regular season, that player can be signed (by an NHL team), but would have to essentially be put on waivers and either clear waivers or be claimed by another club and you can pick up his contract." This explains why Forsberg wouldn't have to go through waivers.

Iginla Out Of All-Star Game, Briere In

3

Throw Calgary into the mix of teams that have no one competing in the game. That's 5 teams and fan bases that now have no impetus to watch this event. That isn't to say that Briere wasn't deserving, but if more injuries occur I would hope that the NHL attempts to nullify this issue. Also, the Flames have no one involved in the rookie party.

Prepare To Love Jon Heyman Even More

6

Small bit from near the end of the column: "The Dodgers made a good trade, acquiring starting pitcher Michael Antonini for all-field, no-hit shortstop Chin-Lung Hu. For the Mets, whose No 4 starter until Johan Santana returns is Dillon Gee and No. 5 starter is unknown for now, it was the latest in a series of curious moves." ...because Antonini's minors numbers project to a favorable depth option in 2011? Of course this is from a guy who believes the Theriot move upgrades the Cards at SS, so Heyman clearly doesn't consider defense a necessary measure of player assessment.
