Jay Glazer's Take On Rampage Jackson's Situation:

"Personally, everyone I've talked to inside the game told me he had to take the shot. It was a big opportunity, there were all kinds of bells and whistles, benefits, action figures, etc. He had to do it.

I was talking with Dana White recently, and obviously at the UFC they're not too happy about it and neither was Rashad Evans, who has had Quinton on the brain for quite some time.

Business-wise, it's a great move. He's a showman, and will have everyone cracking up. I'm actually pretty happy for him, because when something like this happens people realize that these guys are not a bunch of barbarians dragging their knuckles. They're very charismatic, and often very educated.

So when something happens in the mainstream, it helps out the sport. It may not help the UFC, but it helps the sport in general with the educational process — helping to educate those MMA naysayers who don't know enough about it."

"The first fight, he gives the ref a thumb's up and the ref stops the fight," said White. "Then the next guy comes in and sits around and lets them stall for 15 minutes and do nothing. Then the third one, at first it looked like a bad call, so yeah, I was pretty pissed. … It's a problem the sport has, it's growing, there are only so many qualified guys out there who can call a fight."

"Former UFC middleweight title contender Thales Leites has been released by the Ultimate Fighting Championship."

"The Fight Network learned of Leites' release from sources close to the Brazilian fighter."

"A split decision win over Nate Marquardt, followed by a first-round submission of Drew McFedries, was enough to earn Leites a middleweight title shot against Anderson Silva at UFC 97 in April."

"Leites dropped a less than spectacular unanimous decision to Silva in the fight, although he is the only person in the UFC to take "The Spider" all five rounds."

Capt

Frank Mir Rips Brock Lesnar:

"It's not on the website, but today's Newsday has an article on Frank Mir. Mir said he's disappointed by how Lesnar acts bringing his wrestling tactics into MMA, while at the same time cutting a promo on Lesnar. "If I were a parent who was watching this for the first time, I wouldn't want by children to be involved in this. I almost didn't want to be involved in this." Yeah, because any responsible parent would otherwise want their children involved in this.

Mir said he refuses to accept any apology from Lesnar because he believes that was his true nature. Mir said he doesn't like how Lesnar insults people, saying "I think he's an extraordinary insecure person who isn't very smart to begin with and he insulted all those people," and said Lesnar's fight strategy was "cowardly" and "one dimensional." He also said Lesnar was a big fat (yes) guy who doesn't have nearly the athleticism he possesses."

Shaq Wants Brock

"Shaq texts and twitters me all the time saying he wants to fight Brock Lesnar. He’s been training for ten years; Shaq’s probably the only dude in the NBA that can actually fight… I told Shaq, I said listen, ‘Win another NBA championship this year and then we’ll talk next year.’ I love Shaq, let me tell ya, when things were rough on us and we were getting this company started, I couldn’t tell ya who was a better friend than Shaquille O’Neal. I couldn’t say enough good things about him."

"I did well in the fight," said Silva in Portuguese. "I can't always make you happy."

Silva continued his condemnation of Montreal's vocal MMA fans.

"Not everyone understands what they are watching," Silva said. "But hey, you guys can boo if you want. You are paying my salary."

To his credit, Silva did what he needed to do to emerge victorious against a BJJ black belt the caliber of Leites. For all fans know, he may have executed his gameplan perfectly.

"I have a lot of respect for Leites' ground game," he said. "I trained with him and Andre Pederneiras before and their school is a good one. I did my job. It's not always what you want."

Bloody Elbow CBS Columnist Praises Dana As a "Mother Theresa"

This is one of the best complimentary pieces I have read.

Once again UFC head Dana White demonstrates something that has been known for some time, yet most people are afraid to say: White is an awful human being that lacks basic human decency.

This week we saw yet another example of this as White belched some of the most hateful and misogynistic statements we've ever heard a public sports figure make.

Fagan, you're going to love how he got this story:

In a story first reported by UFC writer Maggie Hendricks, White, on a video blog, describes another woman reporter -- who wrote a story critical of White -- as a "f------ dumb bitch." Also in this video rant, White goes to describe the reporter's source as a "f------ faggot."

I didn't know Ms Hendricks writes for UFC. Did you? And, he also admires MMA fans as well.

Dana White is garbage, his sport is garbage and anyone who watches it is a garbage collector.

I would not mind being a garbage collector they make a good living. And, it gets better.

It seems UFC fans support whatever White does, no matter how ill conceived or arrogant or manipulative or ugly. He's got an army of sheep following him.

Baaaaaa.

White says (expletive) jump and fans say, "How (expletive) high, Mr. White?"

Fans ask "can I get you some coffee, Mr. White? A drink perhaps? A little sucking of the toes, Mr. White?"

The interesting thing is White and his supporters all believe they're tough guys. White wears a tight T-shirt, sports a bad haircut and screams about women and thinks he's a Navy S.E.A.L. He's not alone with the tough guy act. When I wrote about the MMA some time ago, a handful of the sport's fans got hold of my home phone number, called me at home, screamed into the phone that my MMA column was terrible, and then hung up. Very gutsy, people, very gutsy.

In actuality, White, the UFC and many of its fans are thin-skinned babies who can't take an ounce of the criticism they dish out.

You'll see the message board below light up with anonymous threats and various anonymous insults. That's what happened last time. Some of those postings, I believe, were from anonymous UFC officials and others associated with the sport.

No act of attempted intimidation will change the fact that White's comments are so far out of bounds, so extremist, that there should be significant repercussions for him.

But that would take guts and White really doesn't have any. Nor is there anyone around him to make him pay. White is an empire of one.

Another day, another White f-bomb tirade, this time with women bashing tossed in to boot.

And you know what UFC fans will do?

They'll applaud and keep watching.

I don't think it would be a stretch to say, another Vlog is forthcoming.

Bloody Elbow Jon Fitch: For the sake of Western Civilization, GSP Needs To Win To Prevent Anarchy in the UFC

Okay, Jon Fitch didn’t quite go overboard expressing his concerns about what a possible BJ Penn victory would do to offset both the 170lb and 155lb divisions in the UFC. But in a perfect world for Fitch and other welterweights and lightweights in the UFC, a GSP win is needed to keep order both divisions. Fitch does not have to be a mastermind promoter to know that a Penn win will pretty much guarantee a third encounter between the two top pound-for-pound fighters, following two successful title defenses from Penn and rebound victory from GSP. With UFC 94 being sold-out and the company expected to set a record breaking buy rate, it’s inevitable that rubber match has happen if this scenario were to play out this way.

Bloody Elbow Did UFC 92 crush UFC 91 in PPV Buys?

According to Dana White's interview with Ryan Hockensmith in ESPN The Magazine:

What are the ramifications of a Georges St.-Pierre win against BJ Penn? And what if Penn wins?

I'm not worried about that; I'm worried about the fight itself. I think it's going to be the biggest fight we've ever done. The last Lesnar pay-per-view did really well, and then our Dec. 27 show crushed it.

When you say it crushed it, are we talking a million buys for Griffin/Evans?

I don't want to get into numbers too much—that's our policy. But it crushed it. I'll say this: The Christmas show crushed the Lesnar fight by 150,000-175,000 buys.

If what White is saying is accurate, I'm not sure what to think. There was not really a strong push on ESPN.  Both Jackson and Griffin are big names amongst the casual audience, but I never considered them no where near to be a huge draw as Brock Lesnar. As MMA Convert points, it possible that the fans that Lesnar brought over were blown away from UFC 91 and didn't mind dropping another 50 bucks on the December show. I don't know what did it, but if that is the case UFC is officially the undisputed leader in mixed martial arts and every hardcore fan, and the MMA Media(Sherdog, Josh Gross, Sam Caplan) need to face reality that no one is ever giving UFC competition.

I'm guessing UFC will go all out push for St. Pierre vs Penn II. I'm curious to see how much coverage they will get on ESPN considering it is Super Bowl week. With this fight being build as the most important fight in the history of the sport, it's possible that they can top some where in the 2 million category. Hey, I know I'm being overly optimistic, but it's possible. Maybe, there is something to Dana White's "In due time UFC will be bigger than World Cup Soccer and the NFL." Anyway, UFC, job well done.

Bloody Elbow Ken Shamrock's Cut Sort of Stemmed From Not Getting...An Extra Cut

Kimboken1_medium

Fronted by Luke Thomas.

In case you are wondering why Jared Shaw questioned whether Shamrock’s wound above his eye was self inflicted, there was evidence prior to the injury  that had given him reason to believe the former.

In this week’s Wrestling Observer, Dave Meltzer reported that Shamrock was extremely pissed that Kimbo Slice was making a considerable amount of money for the fight, made an attempt before the show to get a large undisclosed amount.

While blowing off some steam after being denied the extra money, Shamrock started rolling around and end up getting cut, thus, forcing him to withdraw from the main event.

It's understandable why Shamrock wanted to be paid more, if not, as much as Slice because after all, he is a pioneer of the sport, and is a big name among casual fans from his UFC and WWE days. But, it would of been a better idea to make these demands before the fight was signed, considering he held more leverage when Elite XC was the one looking for a credible, but beatable opponent for Kimbo.

Although Shaw Jr. refused to throw Shamrock under the bus and previously denied claims when he was questioned whether Shamrock demanded more money in interviews with MMA Rated and ESPN 1100 , it was pretty clear there was something to his suspicions when he openly suggested whether Shamrock cut himself intentionally to possibly get out of the fight.

Despite the fact that the Pro Elite staff hinted that they will not be sending Shamrock any holiday greetings cards in the future because of  the disaster that was caused as a result of him getting cut, him and the promotion will cross paths next month in Elite XC’s: Night of Champions in Reno, NV, which is considered Shamrock’s back yard. The undercard will feature tons of local fighters from Shamrock’s “Lion’s Den” gym which also includes Shamrock son Ryan.

Bloody Elbow Quote of the Day: Dave Meltzer on Seth Petruzelli's Comments

Fronted by Luke Thomas.

"I will also say, the story he said, I had heard that story long before Seth Petruzelli said it. I believe it to be true, I cannot tell you that is fact. I got nothing against standup fighting, obviously. You wanna do standup fighting, go kick box, there is a sport for you. If you don’t want to still kick, then go box. If you wanna do MMA, then you need to be able to deal with wrestling…. When Tommy Morrison did “MMA” a couple years ago, his opponent was told no takedowns….Those are the rules…Wait a minute, this is boxing…it obvious the guys a  real boxer….then why don’t they just box…"

--Dave Meltzer comments in the latest Wrestling Observer Radio about Seth Petruzelli comments and if you are involved with Mixed Martial Arts,  then you have deal with boxing, kickboxing, BJJ, wrestling, etc. And, he also endorses that the Athletic Commission look into this.

Bloody Elbow Affliction the New IFL?

2" wysiwyg="true">

Upon the weeks heading into Affliction's "Banned" pay-per view, many hardcore MMA fans were wondering how they were going to sell their event and pay-per view with no television, few commercials, and limited advertising ads to MMA websites.  Eventually, Affliction made a last ditch marketing effort within a week before the event by making local television appearances and placing Bill Board Ads around Time Square. Their efforts got favorable results with a 2 Million dollar gate and over 100,000 pay-per view buys(that's if Tom Atencio claims hold water).

Affliction "Day of Reckoning" is apparently going through some struggles. One reason being is their decision to have the event in Las Vegas, UFC town. Considering the Fertittas basically own Las Vegas, one would have to think they would use their influence in "Sin City" to block Affliction from promoting an event their town.

Second, Affliction sponsored Nascar racer Micheal Skinner's car for the Pepsi 500 in Fontana, Ca pretty much blew up in their face. I thought this was a great marketing strategy, considering millions check Nascar. Apparently it was money not well spent. Not because Skinner finished in 35th place, but because they apparently did not use a calendar as MMA Payout points out:

Much was made a few weeks back when Affliction sponsored a race car in NASCAR to hype the Day Of Reckoning PPV. That seemed all well and good, until reader Joseph Miller brought something to our attention:

It just seems odd to me that Affliction would promote their event at a NASCAR race when the next Affliction event is scheduled for the same time as a NASCAR night race.

I'm not an advertising expert, but this does not look like a wise decision. As Robert Joyner points out, Nascar's "Bank of America 500" is a huge event that will be difficult to detach viewers away. The IFL put themselves in a similar situation, during the weekend of March 1, when they tried to hold an event in Las Vegas. Like Affliction, they held their event the same weekend Nascar held it's event in Las Vegas, where the local media did not send their staff to cover it. And, not to mention it was the same weekend as UFC 82, if anyone cared.

Being a new promotion, it would be kind of a good idea to promote and schedule your event to guarantee your product  a good amount of exposure to widest possible audience.

Bloody Elbow Is UFC marketing Rampage Jackson enough?

Today, Michael Rome talked about the possibility of UFC considering Griffin vs Jackson II. There were some interesting comments on his posts. One of them inquiring on why UFC has not effectively marketed Rampage enough.

I am not sure whether to say if UFC is marketing Rampage enough. I am not even sure to say if they should market him more aggressively.

Coming into the fight with Forrest Griffin, Rampage only had one title defense, and that was against Dan Henderson. I would think that UFC would aggressively promote him after he gets a few successful title defenses. Rampage even said it's smart for the UFC to be careful marketing him because the UFC does not want to fall into a dilemma where invest a ton of money into him and build him as the MMA coming of Muhammad Ali only to get defeated in real soon after winning the belt.

A lot of people don't think Rampage's loss to Griffin effected his credibility to the point where he is not one of the top light heavyweights in MMA. I do think it kind of took a little momentum away from him, considering he was a huge favorite to to win coming into the fight.

Rampage does have the talent and charisma to be the best and most popular athlete in Mixed Martial Arts today. His personalty and fighting style are the reason Dana White acquired assets of the now defunct World Fighting Alliance. He needs a few more wins.

UFC been the MMA jaugernaut for quite sometime, and has been criticize by fans and other MMA organizations for not marketing their fighters enough.

I do think UFC is taking the right, but slow approach in promoting their fighters better than other MMA organizations. Look at what is happening to Elite XC. They promoted Kimbo and Gina Carano as the face of MMA to a point where it is coming to bite them in the ass. They are now relying on them carry the company. The problem is Kimbo is not really a true mixed martial artist and would get beat by top 20 fighters in the UFC. And, Carano is very unreliable because of her failure to make weight at her previous two fights and has come to a point where Gary Shaw has to  tamper the weight scales.

It's understandable why UFC is taking this approach marketing Jackson. However, they could capitilize on Jackson being African American. I would like to see UFC use his charisma and exciting fighting style to attract another demographic, which includes African Americans, toward their brand and mixed martial arts in general. Just like the UFC targeted their marketing of Brock Lesnar towards wrestling fans, by using WWE, TNA, and other Wrestling sites, UFC could plug some ads on BET and other urban websites to target more African Americans when promoting Rampage Jackson fights.
