A particularly harsh year for the passing of baseball greats sees another gone. Or, the over-90 team loses its ace.
The Great American Royals Songbook, #3
From the demented and procrastinating mind that brought you "What a Friend We Have in Frenchy" (see comments), and then sang the "Signing Jeff Francoeur Blues" (end of comments), comes the next entry in the Great American Royals Songbook. Something optimistic this time, which requires looking into the (hopefully) not too distant future.

Count the Yankees out of the Greinke market!
They've got Mark Prior now. (The sarcasm font needs to be extended to FanShots, by the way.) Actually kind of a "why not" deal, just odd to see the Yankees making it.
Way OT: K-State to play in Yankee Stadium
I'm thinking there should be something funny to be said about this, but I can't come up with it. Oh, wait: "They might outhit the Royals." There it was.
The mystery of the John Buck/Marlins signing
One key suggested here: Leo Nunez...
Are the Royals serious about trading Zack Greinke? Well, they're serious about listening. But according to clubs that have spoken with them, they're telling bidders up front that (A) they would need to "win" the deal, (B) they would have to get the kind of four-for-one haul the Rangers got for Mark Teixeira to pull the trigger, (C) they need a bunch of "front-line, winning, quality players" in return, and (D) at least one of those players has to be a pitcher capable of turning into the next Zack Greinke in a couple of years. So unless a team like Texas were to lose Cliff Lee and decide it needs to trade for Greinke at all costs, we're betting this doesn't happen -- not this winter, anyway.
The Ol' Perfesser's relocation dilemma
With the World Series over and the hot stove still warming up, now seems a good time to use Royals Review as my personal advice column.
So here's the deal; for reasons that no one's interested in and therefore I won't go into, I'm getting out of academia and (shudder) going back to school at the creaky old age of forty-five (actually, I'll be forty-six by that time. *Sigh.*) I'll be going for a degree that takes three years, minimum.
By old-fashioned means like studying their academic catalogues and reading the publications of their professors, I've narrowed down my choices to schools in the following three cities. What I seek from you, bretheren and sisteren of Royals Review, is your advice on where The Ol' Perfesser will be happiest as a baseball fan.
The Pods reacquisition may be on hold
Unless Scotty Pods declines his end of the option the Dodgers will keep him. Guess it's just a question of how much he loooooves the Royals...
TPS a managerial candidate again?
Since I wasn't really around to follow the Royals closely during Pena's tenure, any of the long-timers care to comment on how stupid or smart it would be for the Marlins to pursue him as manager?
Six Royals prospects on Pan Am games qualifier roster
Duffy, Montgomery, Collins, Teaford, Moustakas, Hosmer.
Oooh, another Yuni (almost)
The Nats are calling up a pitcher who proves that if you do it right, there's no "i" in "Yunesky". So there, Betancourt. I know there was a post of some sort earlier this season about the odd propensity for that name but I can't find it at the moment.
Apparently he really tore up that shoulder
Hadn't seen this particular Dutton report linked or mentioned, so here it is. We're talking stuff being detached and such. Yost talks tough about how Kendall can't rush back, but then doesn't (still shooting for April return).
Thoughts on September callups (or not)
It got discussed briefly at the end of a FanPost thread somewhere; perhaps this can be a place for more discussion of who might or could or should get a September look.
NOTHING DOING: The Rays had targeted five hitters for a trade and were willing to be aggressive and creative, Friedman said, but despite extensive conversations, no deals were to be made. He noted that none of the five was traded.
"We set our sights high," Friedman said. "We had a specific group of players that we felt like would really impact us that we felt like we'd be aggressive to go out and get."
Their top three were Kansas City's David DeJesus (who got hurt), Philadelphia's Jayson Werth (who was taken off the market) and Washington's Josh Willingham. Others who may have been of interest included Washington's Adam Dunn and Baltimore's Luke Scott. Houston's Lance Berkman, who went to the Yankees, apparently wasn't on their list.
Marc Topkin in the St. Petersburg Times (emphasis mine)
Landing Collins alone for Farnsworth and Ankiel is still a solid return for the Royals, who retain their lead over Arizona in the race for the most quality left-handed arms in one farm system.
http://insider.espn.go.com/mlb/blog?name=law_keith&id=5426674 Keith Law actually likes the trade (Insider access only, sorry)
Soria's no-trade clause
It has been noted somewhere amidst all the threads here that Soria has the Yankees as one of six teams on his no-trade list. Leaving aside just what that means; anybody know who the other five teams are?
OT: a minor-league longtimer gets his shot
Beyond the "oops" aspect of the story, I confess to a weakness for these guys who look like they're headed for minor-league liferdom, only to get their one shot a la Crash Davis. I actually used to see this guy playing in the Florida State League, which adds a little extra interest to the story for me.
Not to get all mushy, but I can't help but enjoying these moments when they happen. Don't know if he'll play again or not, but he's gotten to the majors, and that's more than I can ever say. And hey, he's a catcher. He could probably hang on for years as the stereotypical journeyman backup.
OT: Benefit concert for signing players?
So when is Garth Brooks gonna do a benefit so the Royals can sign their draft picks?
OT: A Non-Royals Paean to Grit
Column about a baseball game between the two local high school squads, in which two highly-touted pitching prospects had rough outings. Coincidentally, this column appeared in the print edition on the same page as news of Trey's firing. The columnist finds it necessary to include mockery of stats-based evaluation, despite the rather obvious likelihood that a true stat geek would consider one bad game too small a sample size to make a good evaluation possible. Grit disease lives, even if Trey is gone...
Brayan Pena an award winner!
(Sorry, subscription required) Apparently BP's the last non-pitcher who was on an opening day roster not to have a hit yet this season. Admittedly the opportunities have been few.
God: Don't blame me for Royals
THE BEYOND (AP) -- In a surprising and garrulous press conference on the Heavenly Gates Portico, God disavowed any responsibility for sorry state of the Kansas City Royals and offered some choice observations on the team's management style on the field and off.

Kendall Explained!
Money quote:
"The Royals spent all offseason adding outfielders so Guillen’s aging legs wouldn’t have to play the field, and they signed his longtime friend Jason Kendall in part for a strong presence in the clubhouse."
Ah, ha...
Gloom
With the freshly-emitted sweep at the hands of the Rangers still casting an air of putrescence over the greater Royals Review metropolitan area, I can only wonder at the best way to go forward in a season increasingly taking on water. What follows is an idle suggestion of an occasional means to salvage something positive or even hopeful about the whole Royals-following experience.
How silly, or how lame, or how stupid would it be to do a game thread for a minor-league game once? The Royals game threads are getting so damn depressing I can barely stand it anymore. I do enjoy the unusual amount of sabermetric capability floating around RR (I'm not remotely mathematical enough to engage in such analysis, but I do try to keep up with it), but the actual business of following games is near-suicidal in its impact. I'm assuming Omaha or NWArk has some means by which games are aired online. Maybe, just once (perhaps on a Royals off-day?) it might be amusing to try following an O-Royals or Naturals game for once, with the usual wit, wisdom, obscenity, etc. that makes game threads so much fun.
If it's not feasible then pretend I never said anything. But might such an experiment be of interest to anyone?
Scouts Night at NWArk
Scroll down to the blurb on "Scouts Night" at the Naturals ballpark in August. Apparently last year during this promo event, the kiddies had a special guest for the on-field campout.
Dang, Mellinger
But what do you really think?
Poz Goes to Confession
on the subject of Alex Gordon.
Yet another MLB-oriented take on the AZ immigration ruckus
Wtih commentary by our very own Jose Guillen. Let's just say that if Moore tries to trade Jose to the Diamondbacks, I don't think he'll go.
OT: Roy Oswalt's hometown hit by MS tornado
Left the Astros for a couple of days to be with his family.
