Chris Paul about to be a Clipper?
Eric Gordon would stay in LA, as would DeAndre Jordan. Those two for Howard will look quite attractive at the trade deadline.
and, um, Simmons had some foreshadowing of this one, before the initial Paul-to-Lakers veto:
L.A. CLIPPERS
The Trade: Chris Paul for DeAndre Jordan (extend-and-trade), Eric Bledsoe, Al-Farouq Aminu and Minnesota's unprotected no. 1 pick in 2012.
Additional Notes: There's a chance the Clips could sign Tyson Chandler (either with their extra cap space, or by dealing Chris Kaman to acquire that cap space) to reunite Paul and Chandler. Also, I'm proud of the Clips for refusing to include Eric Gordon (at least so far) in the discussions. (Something I worried about in a footnote of Day 3's column.) Their goal should be to end up with Blake Griffin, Chris Paul and Eric Gordon … and figure out everything else later. By the way, the thought of having season tickets for multiple years of Paul/Griffin alley-oops just made me soil myself. I pray to everything that's holy that this trade happens.
The Verdict: The Jordan piece worries me. What if he doesn't want New Orleans? What if he wants to stay with the Clips? What if some other team offers him crazy money ($50 million or more)? It's too shaky of a variable. Then again, would Bledsoe, Aminu, Minny's no. 1 pick and a second no. 1 pick be enough to steal Paul? It's possible, right? I'm as amazed as you are — there's a legitimate chance that the Los Angeles Clippers could get Chris Paul.
(Hold on, I have to change my pants.)
(Couple more seconds.)
(And we're back.)
One Other Variable That Scares Me: Everyone keeps forgetting that the NBA still owns the Hornets. I know the league gave Demps the authority to make every move, but still … if you're David Stern and Adam Silver, are you that excited about building a possible juggernaut for the Clippers, the same franchise that's owned by the single most loathsome NBA owner of the past 30 years (and someone who wasn't exactly pro-Stern during the lockout)? Do you really want Donald Sterling to own one of your signature teams? Wouldn't you rather steer Paul toward the Lakers or Warriors?
Billups: Knicks are a couple pieces short. I won't say what they are, but hint: It's me.
Yeah this guy isn't obsessed with his own reputation or anything.
Trade Carmare for Paulward, or, Best Hip-Hop of 2011
There are 16 days until basketball. There are 11 days until TM103. Let's prioritize!
J.R. Smith's time in China isn't going so well
It's OK, you can crash at my place
edit: there's a piece on J.R. and his injury on Chinese TV right now. I can't understand a word of it, but he looked pissed, he needs to shave, and his team's jerseys are hideous. It's mostly stock footage of him doing ab exercises.
Gallo goes back to Italy
This is cool, good for Gallo and Armani Milano
Aw sh*t. Chinese Basketball Association bans opt-out clauses
Here's the link. Looks like we'll have to make do with Andre Emmett and Bonzi Wells and that one guy who used to wear #3 for the Knicks.
Deron Williams talks about Turkey, and whether others will follow him
Sorry it's ESPN, but this is a great read as it provides Deron's perspective of his situation and the opportunities available to all NBA players abroad during the lockout.
And yes, join the CBA Kobe! Although I'd "settle" for Renaldo.
Armen Gilliam dead at 47
This is sad. :( RIP.
Drama in Minnesota! #57 pick Ngombo lied about his age, pick could be invalidated
He claimed to be 21, but is actually 26. This pick was also part of the Rudy Fernandez trade, so thanks to a certain front office schlub in Minnesota, a few GMs/interns have a bit more paperwork than they planned for this weekend.
2011 Draft Grades
Well, time to indulge in everyone's favorite meaningless post-draft pasttime: NBA draft grades! Before we jump, time to set some ground rules:
- Teams will be graded by pick, not by overall draft. No fair to laud teams that happened to have a lot of picks and trash teams that only had one.
- Picks will be graded by what else is there. We assume that each team didn't have a realistic opportunity to trade up. So if a team picks a decent player but passes on a good player, they'll get penalized. If they pick a future rotation player but only passed on D-Leaguers, they'll get a good grade, as they did the most they could do with their pick.
- Only doing the first round because honestly I know maybe two players picked in the second round.
- Remember that all 30 GMs know a fuck of a lot more than we do while we make our five-second judgments.
Jump for my grades, and feel to criticize + reply with your own.
Spurs shopping Tony Parker?
Who knows if this will spark another round of Parker-to-NY rumors. I'm not sure how I'd feel about that.
J.R. Smith likely leaving Denver
What, you say? We need a SG, and we have our MLE available?
I love J.R. Smith. Pleasepleaseplease sign him Donnie. You all know it'll be fun.
@StarburyMarbury: "Charlie Sheen is showing genius like signs."
I don't know much about the Charlie Sheen "saga" but I do know these two should do something adorable, like start a podcast or run for President/VP, because they're perfect for each other.
Walsh's return is up to him
It's the Post, but still. Apparently Dolan wants him back, if he wants to stay.
Six Degrees of NBA Separation
This is nothing short of awesome.
Accompanying Deadspin article is here.
Murphy to be traded, bought out
Stein: Gallinari to stay in Denver, start at SF
I thought the Clippers would be great for him, but this way he gets to contend for a playoff spot, which is nice. I think Karl is a great coach for him to play under, as well.
Woj says a lot of stuff you should probably disregard
How could he still be in demand, Woj? He lacks vitality! Even ESPN wouldn't stoop low enough to keep this guy on the payroll.
Regardless of what happens with the CBA talks, there is simply no way Anthony will lose anything close to the $40 million figure being propagated.
People who cover the NBA, a league populated and run by attorneys, should know by now that the powers that be in the league office are focused on installing fair rules and a level playing field, a major pillar of which is based on a player’s seniority in the NBA. So we’re to believe that Rudy Gay will make $18 million per season while Anthony makes $11 million even though Gay has three fewer years of NBA service than Anthony?
It quite plainly will never happen.
The NBA would never abide such an inequitable system that would ultimately be impossible to justify in any type of rational way. Again, the NBA is legalistic in its administration, which means it will not want anything to do with a punitive salary structure.
It has been somewhat shocking to read stories coming from longtime NBA reporters I greatly respect, who are suffering from myopia and expect the league to preside over a heavily imbalanced pay scale.
For the sake of argument, if the owners achieve all of their objectives against the players on salary reduction, it will be across the board and balanced. It will almost certainly apply retroactively to salary extensions signed previously.
Christopher Reina on why the financial aspect of Carmelo Anthony's extension decision is being misconstrued. NBA GMs and scouts speaking off the record have agreed with this assessment.
Dunk contest participants announced!
More than just something that's on after Landry wins MVP at the Rookie Challenge, the NBA has invited to its 2011 dunk contest Blake Griffin, Serge Ibaka, JaVale McGee (!!!), and all-purpose prop and oop-thrower Brandon Jennings (but really, he'll be dunking as well).
I love the dunk contest. If you truly love basketball, you do too. For the first time in years the contest should be about something other than empty personal branding (Griffin's buttoned-down enough to resist the temptation) so expect a noticeable improvement from last year's atrocity, which was so bad that all of the candidates were visibly yearning to not endure the shame of winning. The best post-Carter dunker of the 2000s turned down a chance to dunk this time around, but he's done enough already.
Alan Hahn on the bench, Przybilla
For those of you clamoring for a PG and C, Hahn dropped some names in today's column. That said, the problem to me is the lack of bench scoring since Wil was promoted. Even a healthy TD will have trouble as the lone scoring option in any bench unit. Does Wil have to move back to his original role for the good of the team?
The real issue is the ball handling of Chris Duhon. Duhon has turned it over almost once every three possessions; toss in the fact that he’s playing more than 20 minutes a night, and the impact is readily noticeable. Of his 37 turnovers, 26 have come via stolen or bad passes.
Melo on "being traded to the Nets." (Turn the volume up)
"The Knicks are perusing the league for backup candidates and have held multiple discussions with the Minnesota Timberwolves concerning Sebastian Telfair, according to an executive involved in the discussions. The Timberwolves will probably not make a move until they gauge the health of Jonny Flynn, their young point guard who recently returned from a hip injury."
Paul Pierce: Knicks/Celtics "isn't a rivalry"
You know, he's right. Which is why we should be sure to remind him that things are changing.
