Tomahawk Nation Quantitative F/+-Based Resume (QFR) Rankings

F233bn_medium

via i43.tinypic.com

With the recent disgust over BCS system I began thinking of a system that would accurately rank college football teams based solely on statistics (power/potential) and resume (schedule/W-L) without the annoying human polling element. My solution was to assign point values to wins and losses over certain teams based on their F/+ ranking. For example, 3 points awarded for a win against an "elite" team (F/+ over 10%) and 0 points for wins versus garbage teams (F/+ less than -10%). This rewards teams with tougher opponents and does not punish losers of big games.

But why use F/+? If you don't know, F/+ is an amalgamation of FEI and S&P+ metrics that evaluate all 120 teams based on offense, defense, AND special teams, as well as adjusting for opponent and garbage time stats. It is an excellent reference.

After the jump you'll find further detail of the QFR calculation and some analysis of the rankings. Hope you enjoy!

Tomahawk Nation Functional Depth In 2011

I wanted to do a quick look at who we lose next year and who we can realistically see being key contributors on the playing field in 2011 (only absolute studs will play as true freshman). Bolded players represent anyone who logged significant minutes/stats in 2010 (not necessarily "starters").

Offense: (12/15 returning)

QB: Christian Ponder (NFL), EJ Manuel, Clint Trickett

RB: Jermaine Thomas, Ty Jones, Chris Thompson, Devonta Freeman, James Wilder Jr.

FB: Lonnie Pryor, Debrale Smiley

WR: Bert Reed, Willie Haulstead, Rodney Smith, Taiwan Easterling (MLB?), Kenny Shaw, Christian Green

TE: Beau Reliford, Nick O'Leary

OL: Rodney Hudson (NFL), Ryan McMahon, Andrew Datko, Zebrie Sanders, Henry Orelus, Blake Snider, Bryan Stork, AJ Ganguzza, Jacob Fahrenkrug

K/P: Dustin Hopkins, Shawn Powell

Defense after the jump...

UPDATE:

New chart. New link.

The method has been tweaked and I'm now using the F/+ percentage rating rather than the numerical ranking of each team. In this way, Excitement Rating (ER) was calculated on a scale relative to 1.00.

The tweaks move up a couple of bowl games that were hurting just from having a low-ranked participant (i.e. Fiesta Bowl). Also, its easy to see in the delta% column how a double-digit number may indicate a blowout...

A recent FanPost about post-game traditions led me to dig up this video from after Homecoming in 2008. (The Facebook Version is even in HD sound and picture, if you have the book of faces)

The Hymn is a fantastic song that is lyrically and musically head and shoulders above the official FSU Alma Mater ("High O'er the Towering Pines"). It was originally the runner-up in a student contest to write the Alma Mater in the 1950s after FCW became FSU in 1947. The Marching Chiefs adopted it at Homecoming in 1958 and have played it after EVERY GAME, win or lose, home or away, ever since.

It holds very special meaning to many FSU alumni and I hope that by sharing with the TN community, more fans will appreciate this unique tradition.

Below are the lyrics, sung in traditional 4-part harmony:

"Here's a Hymn to the Garnet and the Gold; Ringing to the sky.
Here's a song for the men and women bold; Sing with heads held high.
Striving e'er to seek to know; Fight for victory!
Alma Mater, this our song to you; Echoes F-S-U!"

Go Noles!

Tomahawk Nation Rebuilding year for UF? Not so fast...

A buddy of mine (UF grad) made a comment to me tonight about the Gators being in a rebuilding year and that they would go back to elite status/NCG picture next season along with their annual smack down of FSU. Wow. A win against Vandy really brings back the overconfidence that smells of Gainesville doesn't it?

I reminded him that the only BCS team with a winning record that they've beat was South Florida (6-3) and that they're only SEC wins have been to lowly UGA, Tennessee, Kentucky, and Vandy.

A quick look at what they lose in 2011 let's me know that things won't get much better next season....

Tomahawk Nation FSU Players in ACC Fantasy Football

Offhand every week, I play ESPN's "College Football Challenge" which assigns fantasy points to individual offensive players and team defense and kickers. It's not very involved, but I thought it was a novel idea for the college game. I play with an all-ACC squad and what actually stuck out to me were the Fantasy Rankings of our Noles! Some, of course, were expected, but others are surprising!

After the jump we have the conference rankings based on both Production of Points and % Owned:

Nothing we don't all know here, but it's nice to see the hype-machine that is ESPN giving Ponder some love.

Top 25 according to ESPN's Dinich

Reid comes in ahead of UVA's Ras-I Dowling, which is saying something IMO

Any FSU players remaining on this list would have to be Bradham, Hudson, and Ponder. No?

A nice write up of Land O' Lakes QB and 2011 prospect Stephen Weatherford. Says he likes Miami at this point. Personally I think that would be hilarious.
