Should Edgar vs. Maynard be free?
The UFC now has a new LW champ, who successfully defeated a legend in the sport in back to back victories. Despite this astonishing feat, Frankie Edgar still has a long ways to go in terms of popularity. He has tremendous heart and dedication, but a compelling personality is still wanting on his part. It's hard to argue that he isn't popular because he's a "nice guy" or a wrestler, when you have athletes like GSP or Jon Jones increasing their fan base every match. Edgar has shown that he can evolve and mix up his arsenal with some very crisp boxing and fast footwork, but he may not get to showcase those talents in his next bout. Gray Maynard, who won seven of his last eight fights via tedious decision, is an unabashed grinder, in terms of his style. Once he starts his chain of takedowns, you know exactly where the match is going. He's never been known as a crowd pleaser; this style has kept him from reaching his title shot sooner. Edgar and Maynard rarely engage in prolonged trash talk, and haven't seem to master the art of selling a fight. The UFC could do a Countdown Specials for a month leading up to the fight, and still do dismal numbers. I think Edgar and Maynard would get far more exposure by having the bout as the first free UFC title fight to air live on Spike, and the card packed with brawlers to offset the five round grindfest that will be the main event. The number of viewers will pick up as the card progresses and a much larger audience will get a chance to see the new champ face a new challenger.
