That, my friends, is a beautiful thing. Gonzo with a .665 WPA, and Youk with a .394. Between the two of them, they won the game twice over, with Gonzo contributing over a win by WPA.

I know it's sometimes hard to like the guy when he's pitching, but considering what he's going through, it's hard to blame him. Stop ragging the guy and show him some love, he needs it.

A Pitch f/x Look at Clay Buchholz

I've always been a huge, almost irrational, Clay Buchholz fan from his very beginnings.  Something about his combination of unhittable changeup and knee-buckling curveball has always appealed to...

Buchholz's Filthy Changeup (by Whiff Rate)

+

For pitches with 250+ swings, Buchholz's changeup is 3rd with a .462 whiff rate (behind Hamel's changeup, .480, and Marmol's slider, .465). For only pitches in the zone, Buchholz's change is 1st for pitches with 250+ swings at a .413 whiff rate, above Hamel's change at .355 and Marcum's change at .352. That's insane. The whiff rate on Buch's change in the zone would be 13th in whiff rate when compared to other's pitches thrown anywhere. Conclusion: Buch needs to throw more changeups, and not be afraid to throw them in the zone.

Yankees Put Rivalry Aside When Tragedy Struck the Red Sox

I think most of you know me as a Red Sox fan, and whenever we play you I'm going to hope that we beat you into the ground, but you guys have a classy and generous organization and players who are also great people, and that I respect.

Fangraphs Top 10 Yankees Prospects

Two catchers and then the Killer B's.

Miller's Hidden Option

3

Interesting piece of contractual work. If the Red Sox ever put Miller on waivers to send him to the minors and then another team claims him, a $3 mil club option held by the Sox vests for the 2012 season.

Catcher's Effect on the Strike Zone

3

A great article detailing, or at least presenting, a theory of how a catcher can affect the strike zone of a pitcher. Tentatively puts the effect on the scale of +/- 20 runs a season.

Setting up a pitch f/x database on a Mac

On and off over the past month or so, I've been attempting to set up a pitch f/x database.  Making this much harder is the fact that I'm on a mac (10.6 Macbook Pro) and the limited support that...

Some Video of Iglesias

Some nice defensive shots in there. Baseball porn. By the way, does anyone know if there's any more video of Iglesias's defense out there?

Pitch f/x database on Mac?

For a while I've been attempting to construct a pitch f/x database on a Mac with a lack of success, though I've gotten fairly close.  I was wondering if anyone here would be able to help.

Does speed age better?

+

Great quick analysis by Tango. Conclusion: Speedy "great" players age better than the average "great" player, and history tells us Crawford has a good chance of living up to his contract barring injury.

An Early Red Sox vs. Yankees

I just wanted to do a quick side-by-side comparison and see what you guys thought.  Note that this is going to be coming from the perspective of a Red Sox fan, but I wanted to see your opinions on...

Time Between Pitches: Leaders and Trailers

+

The Red Sox have the longest average time between pitches in the majors at 23.3 seconds. Yankees are second at 22.8. Also, Daisuke had the 22nd longest time, and it seems that almost all of those longer than him were relievers.

I would love to play third base, but wherever the team needs me I’ll play. First base, third base. No outfield. I’ll play shortstop if they want me to play short. For me, anywhere in the infield is good.

Youkilis on positions. Why didn't we know this last year, he could've been our solution to short.

Ranaudo finished on the Cape

So Ranaudo finishes his summer with 29.2 IP, 31 K, 8 BB, 10 H, and a 0.00 ERA, holding opponents to a .101 BA.

Random Observations

1. Three out of the top four Red Sox batters by wOBA are pitchers.  Clay Buchholz leads the way with a ridiculous .897 wOBA, with Daisuke following him up at .449.  Youkilis is the sole position...

Bunting late in 1-run games?

I know that it's been well established that bunting is bad in most situations, as the run expectancy of a, for example, runner on first no out is higher than that of a runner on second 1 out.  But...
