Gaslampball Fantasy Baseball

Has this been pitched before?

Let's start a fantasy baseball league.  I was into fantasy baseball in 2003 and 2004 and I really enjoyed it.  Being in a fantasy league with other baseball fans would be awesome.

Does Gaslampball do a fantasy league?  If so, please invite me!  If not, I was thinking of putting one together through the free MLB.com 2007 OPEN.  Would anybody jump in on that?

I would want a live draft, preferably a few days before opening day.  head to head weekly competition with traditional 5x5 scoring.  The typical stuff for us seamheads.

If anybody is interested drop me an email: sean at scanwebsolutions dot com

Pizza Feed v2.0 - The Alex Show

Happy times at Woodstocks.  Thanks to Dex and Jbox for providing some pizza for the good friends of gaslampball.  Those that were there will remember the evening fondly and those of you that couldn't make it hopefully we'll meet once the season starts.

It is so cool that Uncle Barry's friend Alex speaks Swedish and without an accent even (unlike my quasi Swenglish).  Now we all should team up to inject some Padres Love into Scandinavia and make the Padres the Nordic team of choice.  Maybe Sandy and Mr Moores can open a baseball academy in Stockholm in 2012.  Sofia and I brought seven different Swedes to PETCO last year and two more coming in April.  We are doing our part (like sending them home with Padres s.w.a.g.*)

Attended by Dex, Jess, Jbox, Johnny Dub couple, Reverend couple, ABY, Fairweather gang, Christina and Pojken Alex and a few other good friends too.  In typical gaslampball fashion, baseball was not the dominating topic of conversation.  It was also fun to watch some of the Pro Bowl.  Wow, Woodstocks makes good pizza.  Thanks again Dex and Jbox!

Great Poll on Starting Pitching

I was the 52nd vote, Maddux by the way but seriously they are all awesome.  I couldn't help but notice that Boomer has zero votes.  What's a 44 year old pitcher gotta do to get a little love in PETCO, toss another gem?  He can pitch and I'll take our five against any five in our division by a mile.

I couldn't help but notice that Eric Byrnes came to terms with the D'backs on a one year deal.  If we could ever pry him away in a spring training trade...

More on the 2007 schedule - whining about lack of national TV for PETCO

My copy of the schedule has start times for home games.  None of the Saturday games are day games and none of the Sunday games are evening games.  That means NO major national coverage at home for the Padres as we battle for the three-peat.  I can't believe we are really a small market team that hosts no national tv in our home ballpark until October (then we had two mid-week day games last year!?!?!).  Or can they change the start times for regular season games like football does based on standings and predicted tv ratings?

There's two weekend series with LA which is a plus.  Other interesting home weekend series are StL (11-13 May), BOS (22-24 June), and possibly the HOU series (17-19 August) if we get a Clemens start.  No disrespect to MIL, SEA, ATL, PHI and the divisional opponents but I understand why they aren't national tv.  At least we'll be on TBS during that ATL series so our friends in distant cities can see PETCO on their local cable.

A merry Christmas Box

I am sharing this video cause it is hilarious.  Or maybe for all the guys out there that still haven't found that special gift for your special lady.  And proof that Justin Timberlake has a sense of humor.

My apologies in advance if anyone is offended.  And Dex sorry for posting non-baseball content.

Reviewing the 2007 schedule

I've noticed a few quirks about the schedule that I figured I'd share with the group.  The highlight for me of course is the mid-summer weekend hosting of the Red Sox in beautiful PETCO.  These will be premium tickets for a premium series with three no-doubt-about-it sellouts in the gaslamp.

A few other things:

  • Our only road trips to AL teams are the annual weekend trip to Seattle and a mid-week series at Tropicana Field in Tampa.  Good draw there, our road trip to the AL East is to play the Devil Rays!  The two teams we are hosting from the AL East are the Orioles (a weak team in my opinion) and said Sox.
  • We have two trips to Wrigley!  And one of them is on a weekend, the weekend before the Sox at PETCO.  If you have never been to Wrigley or Chicago please make this your out-of-town trip of the year, you'll thank me later.
  • there are ZERO weekend trips to SF.  I am sorta upset about this.  I am dying to see that ballpark in person but I don't wanna see a Giants-Rockies game.
  • we neither start nor end the season at home.  WTF??  At least we got opening day last year.  That is weird I figured for ticket sales reasons each team should get one or the other.
  • most of the home games in May are hosting NL Central opponents.  That is easily the weakest division in baseball so hopefully we can reproduce some May magic from years past
  • there are no 2nd trips by a non-division NL opponent (like the two visits from Atlanta last year)
  • I really wish that June 7th game hosting the Dodgers would have the start time changed so it can be a mid-week day game.
  • Did I mention how jazzed I am about the Series hosting the Red Sox?  Can you picture the matchups?  Maddux vs Schilling?  C.H. Park vs Matsuzaka?  Hensley vs Papelbon?  Wow that will be a fun weekend.

10 minutes ago I shook hands with KT

I was walking through downtown about ten minutes ago, almost home, when I passed the valet booth in front of Oceanaire.  Who did I see getting into his car?  Your GM and mine, Kevin Towers.  It's hard to come up with something clever to say on the spot, so I just laid it out:

    "what's up KT"

He turns, looks me in the eye, shakes my hand and says:

    "Good to see you"

what a moment.  I should have said something clever like good luck with the manager hunt.  whatever.  It was just cool to shake his hand.  Living downtown I've seen him around quite a bit but the first time I actually said hello.

    Go Padres!

My First Diary: Rally Monday and The Playoffs, a New Season Begins

A great time today in the Park at the Park.  I met some other cool Padres fans.  I didn't see anyone else wearing the gaslamp shirt. They had a cool ceremony for dropping the "Division Champs" banner with fireworks and everything.  I guess it was televised on 4sd but I forgot to run the coxbox-dvr.  I heard that first pitch is at 1:09 so I imagine they are going to have another banner dropping ceremony tomorrow.  And good for it.  Let's keep on celebrating the fact that we and we alone are 2006 Western Division Champs!

So tomorrow at noon it is enough talk and back to the game.  I will do my best to drop some comments from the seats.  We'll be sitting in 231 row 18 seats 1-4.  Dex and Jbox, I have one extra ticket as I speak right now but that could turn into two extra tickets because of the mid-day timing of the game.  If you guys know someone that needs a ticket and can meet shortly before the game near PETCO just give me a call.  Jbox has my number.

Rally Monday was pretty neat.  Peavy was the only superstar from the roster, other than Bochy of course.  The rest of it was all the kids.  It must be easy for them because a lot of them live downtown.  Bard, Hens, Barfield, Johnson, Gonzo, CY, and the Peavynator.  As I was leaving the K St gate Mark Grant was walking by us, more like briskly jogging.  We shared a wave, he's a funny guy.  It was my first time seeing Vasgersian off camera, what a funny guy!

About tomorrow, we all know that we need Peavy to pitch a stellar game.  He knows it too.  I think we also need some key hits.  Some doubles with none or one outs and some two out base hits.  Our defense and pitching will hold throughout the playoffs if we just keep getting on base and creating some opportunities.
