Women's Water Polo finishes 3rd in MPSF

The USC Women's Water Polo team finished the regular season with a crushing win over Cal St. Bakersfield, winning by a score of 23-5. 13 different players scored for USC in that game, including five by sophomore Kaleigh Gilchrist and three by junior Constance Hiller. Senior goalie Morgan Vickers made eight saves. The Women of Troy finish the season with a record of 19-4 (5-2), good for a third place finish in the MPSF standings. They look ahead to the conference tournament at Stanford, where they will go against San Jose State in the first round on Friday. One player that wasn't in the pool this week was sophomore goalie Flora Bolonyai, who helped the Hungarian national team qualify this weekend for the 2012 Olympics. She will join Russian utility player Sofia Konoukh '03 as USC representatives in the Olympic tournament. The USA WWP team will be announced this week, and USC alums Tumua Anae, Kami Craig, and Lauren Wenger are all potential candidates.

Baseball gets swept by #21 Arizona State

Not good. The Trojans are now on a four game skid and have a conference record of 5-9. Overall, they are 19-14, which is five games better than their record at this point last season, but the offense is struggling greatly against Pac-12 opponents. This weekend, ASU held USC to only one earned run in the entire series. A spot in the regionals is still a realistic goal, but the Trojans are going to have to improve with the wood if they want to go further. Next up, USC plays three solo games against out-of-conference opponents: Cal State Bakersfield, UCSB, and Long Beach St.

Deadspin article on ND sexual assault case involving a football player.

Fortunately for ND football fans, they can still flaunt their so-called "moral superiority" when SC beats them next season because, to quote two commenters on Deadspin, "Browbeating a physically and mentally distraught victim of sexual assault isn't an NCAA violation. Let's move on to more important things. Like if cream cheese was served with the bagels at a recruiting event."

Men's Volleyball #1 in AVCA poll

Thanks to USC's nation-best 13-game winning streak and to UCLA's defeat of UC Irvine this past weekend, the Trojans are now ranked as the top men's volleyball team in the nation! They will face their biggest test this week, with a Thursday night match against #11 UCSD, followed by a #1 vs. #2 showdown on Saturday against UC Irvine on Saturday. If USC can pull off both victories, they can put themselves in serious contention for the conference regular season title.

MVB Coach Bill Ferguson gets 100th career victory!

This past Friday, USC Volleyball (15-4, 12-4) continued its massive hot streak, winning its 10th straight game by sweeping UCSB 25-17, 25-14, 25-22. With that win, Coach Ferguson has reached the 100 win mark! In his six years at USC, he has posted a record of 100-62, and has only lost 8 games in the past 26 months. With their streak, USC is likely to jump UCLA to take the #2 spot in the AVCA poll. They will now begin a three game home stand that will see them move from the Galen Center back to their old home in North Gym. The next game is on Friday against George Mason. Here's an article from SCPlaybook about Ferguson's milestone.

Katinka Hosszu sets new NCAA Record.

On Day 2 of the NCAA Women's Swimming Championships, Katinka Hosszu earned her fourth individual NCAA title by setting a new NCAA record in the 400yd IM with a time of 3:56.54. It is her second straight national title in this event. Her main opponent was Caitlin Leverenz, the Cal junior who beat her to the wall in the 200 IM. This time, Hosszu was able to keep Leverenz from building an insurmountable lead in the breaststroke and then easily overtook her in the freestyle to earn the victory. In other competitions, Victoria Ishimatsu finished seventh in the 3-meter dive with a score of 342.75, earning her All-American honors. A new school record was set in the 800yd freestyle relay, with a time of 6:59.12, earning USC a fourth place finish. USC is currently tied for third with Arizona with 226 points. Georgia is in second with 247, and Cal has a commanding lead with 311. The championships will conclude tomorrow on ESPN3.com at 5 PM.

Barkley and Holmes featured in Feldman article on social media

Bruce Feldman wrote an interesting article about the role of Twitter and other forms of social media on college athletes, and he used Matt Barkley and Khaled Holmes as the feature examples. Holmes is currently working on a masters' degree in social marketing, and Barkley has the second most followers on Twitter of all college athletes. It's a really good read that shows all the pros and cons that these two have experienced with Twitter, particularly a picture Matt posted of him and his girlfriend on Valentines' Day that ended up on Yahoo Sports.
