Seahawks trade LB Barret Ruud to the Saints for an undisclosed draft pick

This makes Robert Wagner the starter at MLB by default. A vote of confidence in the rookie linebacker. The Saints needed a linebacker as both Curtis Lofton and David Hawthorne are injured and will miss at least the preseason.

Coffee and Cigarettes: Seahawks Links for Sunday

Matt Flynn to start Saturday; Sidney Rice no longer wearing red non-contact jersey

Pete Carroll said today that the Seahawks will stick with the same plan this week that they had vs. the Titans: Flynn will start and play the first half, Wilson will get the 2nd half. Tarvaris Jackson and Josh Portis are 'available' to play. Also, Doug Baldwin, Ricardo Lockette and Barrett Ruud practiced again today.

Why Seattle's QB Competition is Really, Truly, Honestly, Completely Open

The WR competition is the hot topic now, but the QB competition has led the way for most of the off-season, and is kind of flaring up in an ugly way here and there with Tarvaris getting first-team snaps. Brandon Adams removes some assumptions and gives a level-headed assessment on all three quarterbacks that I mostly agree with. The only typical exception being the discussion of Wilson-and-Badgers-OL, which is a point I view differently than most people (see comments to article for my views). Anyway. Read it. The QB competition is lasting on, and even from a media perspective there doesn't seem to be a clear front-runner. Plenty of people have their personal favorites but even most of them won't claim one QB has been "absolutely" better. As that situation endures, well, as Adams puts it: "I hate to be the one to say this, but we should brace for the possibility that Seattle has not significantly improved its QB situation for 2012 at all." I don't think the QB competition as we've run it is an inherently wrong process, I am a little worried about the results it may be coughing up. The whole point of the competition is to drive one or multiple competitors to greater heights. No sign of that working out so far, though we won't really find out in any meaningful way until the pre-season games. What about you, FGers? How would you like Tarvaris Jackson being the week 1 starter? How has the competition affected your optimism for the coming season? :lights a cigar:

Rams agreed on "huge" 4-year extension with Chris Long

WR Jermaine Kearse, CB Walter Thurmond, OL James Carpenter start training camp on PUP

WR Sidney Rice was passed just before camp, which is good news.

Unger's contract is $25.5M over 5 years

"Four-year, $24.935M extension" sounds worse than it is when you realize his rookie contract year is included. That extension makes him the fourth-highest paid center in the league over those four years, but the details are more team-friendly than that: Slated to earn $565,000 in base salary in the fourth and final year of a $3.214 million rookie contract, Unger received a $5.5 million signing bonus and his base salary has increased to a fully guaranteed $2.5 million for the upcoming season. Unger will earn $4 million in fully guaranteed base salary in 2013 before earning $4.5 million (non-guaranteed) in both 2014 and 2015 and $4.25 million in base salary with a $250,000 roster bonus in 2016. Undisclosed base salary escalators are available from 2013-16. Still a pretty steep contract.

Seahawks sign C Max Unger to a multi-year extension

Very happy about this move. He would've been a free agent after this season if he wasn't extended. Terms of the deal are not known yet. The big two 2013 free agents were Clemons and Unger, both taken care of. If Jason Jones becomes a contract matter following his 1-year stint, we'll probably welcome that. From John Schneider via Doug Farrar: "Max's consistent and professional approach to his job transcends the locker room and the huddle."

Falcons release Lofa Tatupu

He is out for the year with a pectoral injury. All of this makes me sad.

Runs through 2014 (2012 is replaced in the contract).

Seahawks Release Mike Williams, Thoughts & Speculation

The Seahawks have release wide receiver Mike Williams, and Field Gulls speculates on the why and what this means for the future of the team.

Seahawks Agree to Terms with DE Bruce Irvin, per PFT

The first first-rounder to agree to terms/sign, if PFT's league source is correct. EDIT: Andrew Brandt reports it is $9.34M fully guaranteed over 4 yrs, w/over $5M signing bonus.

Seahawks claim Raymond Webber off waivers

WR Raymond Webber was a highly productive receiver out of Arkansas Pine-Bluff, undrafted last year and signed by the Buccaneers. He impressed in camp but tore his hamstring before the preseason, and was cut by the Bucs yesterday. "Webber has some intriguing physical tools. He's a big [6'3, 220 pounds - TB], physical receiver who does a great job catching the ball with his hands and is a powerful runner after the catch," per Bucs Nation's Sander.

Wade Phillips thinks Bruce Irvin will be a big-time pass rusher and criticism of Seahawks is unfair. Phillips is a huge Irvin fan.

Per John McClain. As some of you may have noticed, I'm a huge fan of the Phillips 3-4 and consider Wade one of the best defensive coordinators in the league (if not the best). The Phillips 3-4 has players like DeMarcus Ware stick to the line like glue, and if anyone (outside of the Hawks FO/coaching staff) gets what PC wants to do with Irvin, it's Wade.

Seahawks assigned rookie pool of $6.11 million.

That is the first-year cap numbers for our rookie class. Total (over lifetime) of deals can't exceed $33.61 million. That should leave us with over $12 million in cap space, at the very least.

The Mike Williams Conundrum and the Big Slot Receiver

Looking at BMW's struggles in 2011, Field Gulls speculates on how best to utilize the big possession receiver.

But why 11? Because teams around the league know how much Seattle loves Tannehill. And you can write this down: If Tannehill were to be there at 12, Seattle would take him, even though the Seahawks just paid medium dollar for Matt Flynn in free agency. That's how much Seattle loves him. "At Tannehill's workout,'' one source told me, "[coach] Pete Carroll was giggling like a schoolgirl watching him throw. His attitude was like, 'What are we even doing here? He'll never be there for us.' ''

Nickel Corners, Slot Receivers and the Seattle Seahawks

Looking at Cosell's thoughts on nickel/slot players and the current options on the Seahawks roster.

LB David Hawthorne signs with the Saints

5-year deal. We were reportedly negotiating with him on a 3-million per year deal (per Clayton), but I doubt it was a long-term deal.

Deuce Lutui visits Seahawks

Deuce played for PC in USC. He was most recently in the news for failing his physical with the Bengals last year due to being overweight. This has been an ongoing problem for him, and he barely played for the Cardinals last season on a one-year contract because of it. He is a solid enough player when he isn't struggling with his weight, tho'. His position - as far as I know - is RG. Does this indicate Moffitt's recovery is an issue, or are we looking to add more experienced depth? Lutui could be a good get since we're fairly needy at OG, but it's hard to get excited considering his recent struggles.
