Report: Josh Barnett signs multi-fight UFC contract, Octagon return fight expected 'later this year'

Three months ago Josh Barnett declined an offer to return to Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC), with his manager explaining that his client was going to wait for the "best deal" before making a decision about his mixed martial arts (MMA) future.

It came as somewhat of a shock, considering the Pride FC, Affliction MMA and Strikeforce standout declared just weeks earlier that he was eager to return to his old stomping grounds inside the Octagon and "wreck shop." Regardless, Barnett stuck to his guns over the course of the next two months, reiterating (here and here) that he was content to hold out until his demands were met.

The wait, according to a report from USA Today this evening, appears to be over.

Barnett recently inked a multi-fight contract and is expected to return to the eight-walled cage "later this year" for the first time since 2002, which is when he defeated Randy Couture at UFC 36 to win the Heavyweight championship. However, Barnett tested positive for performance-enhancing drugs (PEDs) immediately afterward, was stripped of the title and released from the promotion.

It was a chain of events that triggered and MMA odyssey for Barnett, who traveled the world over the next 10 years, laying waste to many of the top fighters (at the time), including Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira and Alexander Emelianenko, among others, in Japan during the Pride FC heyday. The incident, as well as the way in which he handled the fallout, irritated UFC President Dana White, who once vowed that Barnett would never be welcome back.

Never say never.

Barnett, 35, has won nine of his 10 most recent matches, dating back to 2008, with the only blip during that span a unanimous decision loss to Daniel Cormier in the Strikeforce Heavyweight Grand Prix little more than one year ago. It's unclear who Barnett will compete against in his return bout and when; however, Frank Mir, has been bandied about quite often (more here).

It wouldn't be a bad idea to book a trilogy match with the aforementioned Nogueira, either.

Report: Roy Nelson vs Stipe Miocic fight in the works for UFC 161 in Winnipeg

With Mark Hunt receiving his work visa in the eleventh hour to travel to Las Vegas, Nevada, and punch Junior dos Santos in the face at UFC 160, which takes place this upcoming Saturday night (May 25, 2013), it took the heat off Roy Nelson to make a quick turnaround and help save the Memorial Day weekend pay-per-view (PPV) event.

Not so fast.

When interim Bantamweight champion Renan Barao was forced to withdraw from his upcoming UFC 161 main event appearance against Eddie Wineland at MTS Centre in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada, on June 15, 2013 (more here), the world's leading mixed martial arts (MMA) promotion was left with another fight card hole to fill.

It implemented a quick fix, promoting the pivotal 205-pound showdown between Dan Henderson vs. Rashad Evans to the top of the marquee (more here), but Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) matchmakers continued to tinker into the late evening.

And once again "Big Country" was integral piece of its short notice plans, according to Damon Martin at Bleacher Report.

Nelson, fresh off a first round knockout of Cheick Kongo at UFC 159 last month (April 27, 2013), will indeed make a rapid return to the Octagon, taking on up-and-coming Heavyweight prospect Stipe Miocic, who most recently suffered the first loss of his professional 10-fight MMA career at UFC on Fuel TV 5, getting pounded out by Stefan Strufe in the second round of their main event clash back in Sept. 2012.

Miocic was already booked to welcome Soa Palelei back to the eight-walled cage on the UFC 161 "Prelims" under card; however, it appears that the former Golden Gloves boxing champion, NCAA Division I wrestler at Cleveland State University and in-demand collegiate baseball prospect, will have a much bigger fish to fry this summer.

Will he pull off the upset or will Nelson make it four straight?

In addition to the main event between Henderson and Evans, UFC 161 will feature another meaningful Light Heavyweight bout between Antonio Rogerio Nogueira vs. Mauricio Rua on the PPV, as well as a Heavyweight tilt between Pat Barry vs. Shawn Jordan, among others.

It's unclear at this time who the promotion will find to step up and take on the suddenly opponent-less "Hulk."

Vitor Belfort smashes Michael Bisping and Luke Rockhold and doesn't call for Anderson Silva rematch ... Is he 'scared?'

Moments after Vitor Belfort nearly put his shin through the back of Michael Bisping's head at UFC on FX 7 back in Jan. 2013, setting up a second round technical knockout finish of "The Count" in Sao Paulo, Brazil, "The Phenom" defiantly took to the microphone in his post-fight interview and called for a rematch with Light Heavyweight Champion Jon Jones.

Bewildered mixed martial arts (MMA) fans rolled their collective eyes and scratched their heads, unable to understand the reason Belfort would call out the 205-pound "Bones" seconds after he registered the most important 185-pound win of his Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) tenure.

Even UFC President Dana White quickly shrugged it off, clarifying that Belfort was a Middleweight and that the 205-pound title opportunity at UFC 152 was -- for all intents and purposes -- a one-off deal (or just MMA politics, depending on who you ask and when).

Undaunted, Belfort returned to the Octagon last night (May 18, 2013) to welcome long-time Strikeforce champion Luke Rockhold to the organization in the main event of UFC on FX 8, which took place at Arena Jaragua in Santa Catarina, Brazil. And Belfort did what he did best, scoring an incredible "Knockout of the Night" in the first round with a ridiculous spinning heel kick (watch it here).

It was insane, leading one so-called MMA "reporter" to declare that Belfort was once again the division's No. 1 contender behind Chris Weidman.

Belfort, meanwhile -- fresh off his best and most meaningful knockout victory ever -- took a much different, more subdued, tack when ringside announcer Jon Anik entered the Octagon to conduct his post-fight interview and asked who he wanted to fight next.

"I'm here to fight -- I don't pick fights, I accept fights," Belfort said. "The fans and [Dana White] decide it. I'm going to root for Anderson Silva [against Chris Weidman at UFC 162]. Brazil has done a tremendous job, we are going through some hardships in Brazil."

It's safe to assume that Belfort got the message loud and clear that a rematch with Jones is simply out of the question, which is the reason he didn't continue to beat his war drum. However, perhaps even more puzzling, Belfort refused to call out the man who just inked a new "10-fight contract," the same man who dashed his 185-pound title aspirations with a front kick to the face at UFC 126 back in Feb. 2011.

Indeed, with back-to-back finishes of top division contenders, Belfort has certainly made a case for a rematch, especially considering that -- aside from a "super" fight and "All American" -- the upcoming options for Silva are few and far between.

Instead, when pressed again during a UFC on FUEL TV post-fight interview, Belfort once again took the easy, an uncharacteristic, way out.

"I want my vacation now," he said. "I promised my wife. I deserve it…. Kelly Slater, I want to go to your house in Hawaii and surf. Separate the house for me for at least one week [laughs]."

One person who wasn't laughing was FUEL TV analyst and three-time UFC title challenger (and loser) Chael Sonnen, the biggest self promoter in the sport. He branded Belfort "almost unstoppable at Middleweight" before the match with Rockhold, saying that all he needed to do was get his mind right to become champion. And when Belfort failed to call for a rematch with Silva in the wake of his biggest win to date inside the Octagon, he suggested that the Brazilian was "scared" of the dominant champion.

His on-air co-panelist, Daniel Cormier, rushed to his defense, arguing that Belfort more than likely didn't make the case for a Silva rematch out of respect for his Brazilian counterpart and the all-Brazilian crowd that was showering him with adoration.

Regardless, the fact remains that Belfort is the hottest thing going in 185-pound division right now and he's saying all the wrong things ... or nothing at all.

UFC on FX 8 'Belfort vs Rockhold' results recap from last night in Brazil

Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) made a quick return trip to Brazil last night (Sat., May 18, 2013), serving up another healthy helping of mixed martial arts (MMA) action, this time from Arena Jaragua in Santa Catarina.

In the UFC on FX 8 main event of the evening, the self-appointed "old lion," Vitor Belfort, was tasked with introducing the last man to hold the Strikeforce 185-pound title, Luke Rockhold, to the Octagon for the first time ever.

Rockhold vowed to beat Belfort's ass in the build up to their clash, upset that the aging Brazilian, 36, was benefiting from an approved testosterone replacement therapy (TRT) treatment program. After his jaw-dropping performance in front of a raucous hometown crowd, however, Rockhold might want to consider a sip or two of his secret sauce.

Or maybe an intravenous drip.

Belfort, historically a ferocious finisher with an uncanny ability to separate grown men from consciousness in five minutes or less, came out cool and calm, letting Rockhold set the pace and bring the fight to him. He would then explode with a flurry, the crowd would erupt and Rockhold would reset.

This happened a handful of times before Belfort dropped a savage spinning heel kick that connected flush on Rockhold's jaw. His hallmark "fasted hands in the sport" then went to work, beeping and bopping Rockhold's semi-conscious noggin from side-to-side with alarming accuracy before the referee finally dove into save the American Kickboxing Academy (AKA) standout from certain mental harm.

Incredible (watch video highlights here).

It's hard to remember a better recent knockout, which was similar to the one Edson Barboza pulled off against Terry Etim at UFC 142. Antonio Silva and his come-from-behind destruction of Alistair Overeem at UFC 156 was pretty sweet, but this one might take the cake.

Especially considering that Rockhold -- whose decision to keep the fight upright early was clearly a major blunder -- is a very durable, talented and long Middleweight fighter. Indeed, he's not that easy to touch, much less plant a backward fight-ending foot on his face.

It's insanely impressive. And like a fine wine, whether you agree with TRT or not, Belfort appears to get even better with age. He now has two consecutive knockout victories, Michael Bisping being the other, which were set up with his feet rather than his hands.

What he pulls off next, and against who, will be something worth looking forward to as the division contender picture seems wide open after Chris Weidman gets his crack at Anderson Silva at UFC 162 later this summer.

All-Brazil rematch, perhaps?

Earlier in the evening, in the co-featured fight of the night, another Strikeforce import -- and former champion -- Ronaldo Souza made his long-awaited promotional debut, too.

And "Jacare" made it look way too easy against Chris Camozzi, who was in the midst of a four-fight win streak and looking for his big break at the expense of the otherworldly Brazilian jiu-jitsu ace. It didn't come because he was outclassed early on the feet, getting rattled with a big punch in the opening minute, and then hung out on the ground for way too long against such a dangerous strangling machine.

Perhaps his eggs were scrambled, or maybe Camozzi -- who was originally booked to fight someone closer to his level, Rafael Natal -- was just lost in the moment, but the second his back hit the floor he should have tried to move Heaven and Earth to immediately return to his feet.

He didn't, and Souza locked up an air-tight arm-triangle choke that was set up courtesy of a slick omoplata that he somehow secured in a scramble.

Indeed, Souza turned in a cold and calculated alligator-like performance that undoubtedly has vaulted him up the 185-pound rankings with a quickness. He called out the winner of Vitor Belfort vs. Luke Rockhold in his post-fight speech, seemingly no longer interested in a bout with the scratched Constantinos Philippou.

Souza seems to think he's got bigger fish to fry. And it's hard to argue otherwise.

In televised main card Lightweight action, Evan Dunham got off to another slow start against Rafael dos Anjos, who headed into the match on a back-to-back-to-back win streak and a spot in the promotion's Top 10 rankings.

And it cost him in the end.

It was a close back-and-forth bout, with Dunham hitting his tenacious eat-two-punches-to-land-one stride in the second stanza. He was clearly the aggressor for much of the fight, with dos Anjos firing back and countering with modest success.

Dunham turned up the heat in the third and final round, securing a takedown and later ending with a flurry that appeared to seal a close decision victory. However, the judges disagreed, giving dos Anjos the nod as Dunham hung his head with purpose and stomped out of the cage in disgust.

UFC President Dana White agreed, announcing on Twitter.com immediately after the decision was read that Dunham got "fucking robbed." That's an unofficial opinion, and so is this one, meaning that dos Anjos keeps his impressive streak alive and Dunham's hard luck continues.

Sad, but true.

And in the not-so riveting opening match of the FX broadcast, Joao Zeferino and the aforementioned Natal went toe-to-toe in an anything but high-profile battle of Brazilians that had the crowd roaring early and snoring late.

Zeferino, making his Octagon debut on the heels of seven straight victories on the international circuit, was filling in on short notice because Camozzi got promoted to fight "Jacare" when "Costa" pulled up lame. He was familiar with Natal, apparently defeating him in a jiu-jitsu match earlier in their careers, according to the ringside announcer, but "Sapo" got the best of him when it mattered most.

Natal, a six-fight UFC veteran, weathered somewhat of an adrenaline-fueled early storm, avoiding the winging shots of Zeferino in the opening moments of the Middleweight showdown and holding his own in the grappling department to ultimately earn a unanimous decision. "The Brazilian Samurai" simply didn't have the energy to last 15 minutes, fading fast after a completive first round and completely running empty as Natal pounded him in the final seconds of the match.

It's far from a name-worthy "Who's Who" hit list, but Natal has won four of his list five appearances and is certainly deserving of a step up in competition moving forward.

A win here could put him next in line for a title shot. It may be free on cable TV but this fight is as relevant as they get, folks.

Round one: Hollett with a big swing and a miss. Leg kick from Hulk. Hollett charges forward, but doesn't land. Maldonado clips in a right. Hollett goes for a spinning back kick, but throws it blind and it bashes Fabio's nuts. "That'll leave a mark" states Anik. Yup. Maldonado takes a couple minutes of writhing on the ground to recover before doing the Rich Franklin sumo stomp to try and feel better. Eventually he does. Left for Fabio. Jab to the body. Fabio beckons Hollett in and Roger obliges with a double leg direct into half-guard. Fabio ties him up and Hollett shoulder strikes him to free an arm. Somewhat of a quick standup from the ref, but here we are. Hollett backs Maldonado into the cage and eventually drops for a takedown that gets nixed via underhooks. Wall and stall from Hollett, and Leon Roberts separates them even with Maldonado landing the better shots off his back. Fabio wants to counterstrike and keeps trying to get Hollett to engage standing. Hollett just gets a takedown and ends the round in half guard doing nothing with it. 10-9 Hollett, but I wouldn't care if you told me 10-10.

Round two: Hollett with a right and another spin kick attempt - this time up high. Maldonado limp-legs out of a single attempt. Maldonado backs Hollett into the fence and lands some nice dirty boxing inside. Uppercuts and elbows from Maldonado before Hollett reverses him. They break and Maldonado hits a few punches. Maldonado wants a firefight, but Hollett is fighting his fight, despite the repeated Diaz antics from Fabio. Hollett uses a single-leg to back Maldonado all the way across the cage into the fence. Fabio reverses and he's still winging and landing tons of punches inside. 19-19

125 lbs.: Azamat Gashimov vs. John Lineker

Round one: Lineker throwing big early as he always does. He promptly lands a big right about 30 seconds in that knocks Gashimov down. He follows with some GnP, but Gashimov has recovered, threatens an armbar and manages to get up. He does eat a knee for his trouble, however. Gashimov with a body-lock throw, but Lineker scrambles promptly. Gashimov shoots and the mohawked Lineker stuffs it and gains top position. Gashimov with an elbow from the back and Lineker hits a right. Gashimov stands. Hazmat knocks Link off balance with a teep/leg kick. Lineker throws a right to the body and follows it up with a left hook that lands clean and a right that does too. Lineker goes for a takedown and Gashimov grabs the cage to elicit a warning from Mario Yamasaki. Gashimov stands, and Yamasaki changes his mind and takes a point! Gashimov tries to kick Lineker and stumbles to the ground. Lineker pounces on top. 10-8 Lineker.

Upon replay, it showed that Gashimov curled his fingers a bit into the fence to stand, so a legit point deduction.

Lineker gets into swinging early again and lands a nice left. Lineker lands a big right leg body kick that damages Gashimov, and he swarms after it. A big right punch to the ribs and Gashimov crumples. Lineker pounces with punches and Yamasaki rescues the defenseless Gashimov.

Final result: John Lineker wins via TKO (strikes) at 1:07 of round 2

125 lbs.: Chris Cariaso vs. Jussier Formiga

Round one: Formiga looking good early as he gets the takedown and works into half guard. JuicyA maintaining top control as Cariaso struggles with various attempts to stand. Formiga keeping Cariaso away from the cage and passes into side control. Cariaso manages to regain half guard as Formiga attempts a mount. Full guard. Half guard. Mount. Half guard. Full guard! Fun stuff on the ground, but Kevin Mulhall is bored and stands them up. Juicy gets an issue fixed with his glove and we're back to standing with 50 seconds left in the round. Cariaso misses with a couple of kicks and flurries to little effect. Inside leg kick for Formiga. 10-9 Formiga.

Round two: That was quick - Cariaso stepped forward and Juicy instantaneously shot a double into half guard. A quick pass to side and now mount. Formiga threatens, but Cariaso bucks and shrimps back into half guard. Cariaso working butterfly guard and regains full. The crowd is jeering and whistling, which is pretty classless for what's been an entertaining grappling match so far. Mount and some ground and pound for Formiga. Cariaso regains full guard with a sweet little shrimp and he lands a nice elbow from bottom. Finally three and change minutes into the round, Mulhall stands them, much to Florian's dismay, as it was simply a moment in closed guard. Cariaso lands a right and they clinch but separate. Ineffective striking from both ends the round, but 20-18 Formiga.

Round three: Cariaso looking a bit desperate to start, as he realizes he's way down on the cards. Throwing heat, but not landing. Leg kick from Juicy. Formiga shoots a single, and elevates Cariaso's leg above his head into a takedown. Cariaso gets to his feet, but can't escape the clinch. Mulhall gives him the exit with 3 minutes left as he breaks them up. Cariaso is tired and not getting a lot on his punches. Formiga catches him coming forward with a takedown attempt that gets stuffed. Clinching up against the cage and Formiga is still working for the takedown while Cariaso tries to stay upright. Formiga screws up and leaves his head in for a D'arce attempt that Cariaso NEARLY finishes, but Formiga rolls out out of it after some danger. Cariaso finally lands a takedown and starts to go nuts in side control. He's throwing elbows like they're going out of style. Formiga escapes but Cariaso regains the position and is desperately trying to end this with strikes. He doesn't have enough on them, despite cutting open the forehead of JuicyA and he lives out the round. 29-28 on my cards, but maybe some judge doesn't give Formiga credit for top control in one of the rounds? We go to find out.

Final result: Nope. Jussier Formiga wins via unanimous decision 29-28 x3

Round one: Good start for Larsen in the green and white trunks - he catches a Martins leg kick and trips him down. Larsen lets him up and tags him with a right as he stands. Roaring crowd for the hometown boy early. Big uppercut for Larsen in the clinch. Martins lands an elbow that starts the mouse process underneath Larsen's eye. Martins is holding his chin up like a dartboard and Larsen is tagging it. They stand and wang for a bit, and while Martins is landing clean, his upright chin means he goes down in the flurry exchange. Larsen gets him down, but Martins rolls for a heel hook, into a calf slicer. Larsen scrambles and Martins takes his back, but Larsen scrambles up quickly. More rock 'em sock 'em and they both land. Larsen with a takedown, but Martins scrambles up and gets in a knee. Head kick from Martins who slips. The round ends with Larsen in Martins' guard. 10-9 Larsen.

Round two: Uppercut from Martins to open up. Martins lands again which causes a shot from Larsen that gets stuffed. Larsen body clinching him up against the cage and lands a bunch of knees. They break and Larsen re-engages but eats a punch on the way in. Another clinch. They go back to boxing and Larsen lands a pair of solid rights. Good chin from Martins, because he's eaten a bunch of flush hooks and crosses. Martins misses a switch kick. Larsen blocks a high kick with his arm that seems to hurt him a bit. Larsen lands two enormous right hands and Martins is wobbly, but Larsen can't put him away. Close round, but 20-18 Larsen.

Round three: Great fight so far and... wow, Martins hit an enormous right that puts Larsen face down on the mat as Larsen was coming forward. What an ending to a fantastic little Bangfest™

Report: Tomorrow is Mark Hunt's 'last possible day' to clear customs and fight Junior dos Santos at UFC 160

Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) Heavyweight Mark Hunt is still in New Zealand, unable to clear United States Customs and board a plane bound for Las Vegas, Nevada, to fight Junior dos Santos next weekend in the co-main event of UFC 160, which takes place at MGM Grand Garden Arena.

"Super Samoan" has attempted numerous times and has been frustratingly turned back because of an old arrest that took place more than one decade ago courtesy of some "idiot friends." He plans to give it one more shot tomorrow (Sun., May 19, 2013), but if he is unsuccessful again, Hunt will have no other choice but to withdraw from possibly the biggest fight of his mixed martial arts (MMA) career to date, according to Stuff.co.nz.

Hunt lamented about simply running out of time:

"The training has been really, really good -- I have had one of the best camps of my whole career, and it has been here [in Auckland]. I am ready to go. The problem is to acclimatize. I have fought a few times in America [and] acclimatization is really important. It is a shame to go and waste all of this hard work on three or four days of jet lag."

The promotion has apparently been pitching in for more than one week now, attempting to help Hunt resolve his visa issues and convince U.S. Customs and Border Protection officials that Hunt is "not a threat to America." Those pleas, apparently, have fallen on deaf ears up until now.

Tomorrow is hopefully a different story, with Hunt remaining cautiously optimistic (still), commenting on Twitter.com earlier today that he hopes to finally get the green light to fly out to "Sin City" tomorrow. If not, it would most likely mean that Roy Nelson -- who has reportedly been put on standby in the event that Hunt was indefinitely help up -- will be pressed into emergency action to rematch "Cigano" this upcoming Memorial Day weekend.

Tick-tock, tick-tock goes the clock.

UFC Light Heavyweight Champion Jon Jones is on the mend from his awful toe injury (see .gif here), which he suffered during his lopsided thumping of Chael Sonnen at UFC 159 last month. The latest update comes on the heels of "great news" last week that his toe was just dislocated and healing ahead of schedule. Indeed, it seems as though the gruesome injury will have little -- if any -- impact on keeping him out of action for an extended period of time. Yea baby!

Nate Diaz suspended for calling Bryan Caraway a 'fag,' could be fined and/or cut after investigation

Note to all Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) fighters current and future: Do not call transgender mixed martial arts (MMA) fighters a "sick, sociopathic disgusting freak" and don't call Miesha Tate's boyfriend a bonus-stealing "fag."

Matt Mitrione learned the former lesson and was suspended for two weeks as the world's leading promotion investigated his "offensive" transphobic comments. Nate Diaz is now learning the latter lesson for lashing out at Bryan Caraway on Twitter.com earlier this afternoon (more here), calling him "the biggest fag in the world" for accepting a retroactive $65,000 "Submission of the Night" bonus check.

It was a handsome reward initially reserved for Pat Healy after his thrilling come-from-behind stoppage of Jim Miller at UFC 159 last month. However, it -- along with another $65,000 "Fight of the Night" bonus -- was revoked by UFC President Dana White after "Bam Bam" tested positive for marijuana in his post-fight drug urinalysis.

The whole situation apparently didn't square right with Diaz and he voiced his opinion. And it didn't take long for the UFC to respond (via MMAFighting.com):

"We are very disappointed by Nate Diaz’s comments, which are in no way reflective of our organization. Nate is currently suspended pending internal investigation and we will provide further comment once the matter has been decided."

It's unclear when that final decision will come down, but if Mitrione is a barometer for estimation, it shouldn't take too long. And it more than likely would not interfere with Diaz's next fight inside the Octagon, considering he is coming off a recent knockout loss to Josh Thomson at UFC on Fox 7 less than one month ago and doesn't have anything lined up.

That is, of course, if UFC intends to keep its former No. 1 Lightweight contender on the roster. Indeed, White suggested that Diaz -- who is in the midst of a two-fight losing skid -- could be released from the promotion pending the outcome of the internal investigation:

"We are going to fine, suspend or cut him. One or two of those three will happen."

If Diaz is cut, which would be a total shock, he would be a very attractive free agent aquisition for Bellator, World Series of Fighting (WSOF) and even perhaps his older brother's (Nick Diaz) upstart War MMA creation.

UFC on FOX 8: Michael Chiesa vs Jorge Masvidal fight set with Reza Madadi scratched from Seattle card

Visa issues strike again.

Reza Madadi, who recently earned the "Submission of the Night" for his UFC on Fuel TV 9 finish of Michael Johnson last month, has been forced to withdraw from his upcoming bout with Michael Chiesa, which was scheduled for UFC on FOX 8 at KeyArena in Seattle, Wash., on July 27, 2013.

Chiesa will instead take on Jorge Masvidal, according to a report this evening on FUEL TV's "UFC Tonight."

Masvidal -- the former No. 1 Lightweight contender under the Strikeforce banner -- is fresh off his Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) debut, defeating Tim Means via unanimous decision at UFC on Fox 7 less than one month ago (April 20, 2013).

"Gamebred" initially called out the winner of the recent UFC 159 "Fight of the Night" between Pat Healy and Jim Miller (it was Healy), citing that he wanted to "make easy paychecks." However, with Healy facing a suspension for a failed drug test (read more here) and Madadi hung up in Swedish customs, the South Floridian will have to settle for The Ultimate Fighter (TUF) 15 winner.

Chiesa (9-0) will make his return to mixed martial arts (MMA) action since winning his Octagon pay-per-view (PPV) debut (albeit on the "Prelims" portion of the card) against Anton Kuivanen at UFC 157 in Feb. 2013. "The Maverick" weathered an early storm from his Finnish foe and managed to not only come back, but to score a second round submission in the process.

The undefeated Lightweight will look to keep his perfect record intact after an incredible performance on TUF 15, which saw him defeat the likes of Justin Lawrence, Jeremy Larsen, James Vick and then Al Iaquinta in the Finale.

UFC on Fox 8 will feature a Flyweight championship main event between Demetrious Johnson, who will put his 125-pound belt on the line for just the second time, tangling with top-ranked division contender John Moraga. In the co-main event, top Welterweight prospect Rory MacDonald will meet the hard-hitting Jake Ellenberger in what is being pegged as a No. 1 contender bout.

'Monsters University:' UFCs Georges St. Pierre to voice 'Art' in French-Canadian version

Georges St. Pierre is going Hollywood ... again.

Fresh off the set of the upcoming "Captain America" sequel titled "Winter Soldier" (details here) as "Baltroc the Leaper," the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) Welterweight Champion has landed another high-profile role as the voice of "Art" in the French-Canadian language version of Pixar's animated "Monsters University," according to TheStar.com.

"Monsters University," which is the "college-days prequel" to "Monsters Inc." of 2001 is described (via IMDb.com) as:

Mike Wazowski and James P. Sullivan are an inseparable pair, but that wasn't always the case. From the moment these two mismatched monsters met they couldn't stand each other. 'Monsters University' unlocks the door to how Mike and Sulley overcame their differences and became the best of friends.

In the English version on "Monsters University," "Art" -- a shaggy purple fratboy who is a mysterious monster with a questionable background and the strangest member of the Oozma Kappa fraternity -- is voiced by Charlie Day, who is joined by heavy hitters such as Billy Crystal, John Goodman and Steve Buscemi, among others.

It's unclear who will join "Rush" behind the Canadian scenes of "Monsters University," which is set for release in the United States on July 21, 2013, but it certainly won't be Johny Hendricks, his most likely next opponent inside the Octagon.

"Bigg Rigg" has suggested that St. Pierre will be too busy with his acting aspirations and not focused on his mixed martial arts (MMA) career if and when the 170-pound standouts finally collide. "Rush" responded, saying that he was "already training" his recent movie roles have "nothing to to with the end of my [MMA] career."

Pat Healy issues statement on failed UFC 159 drug test, apologizes for 'poor life choices'

The biggest win in the mixed martial arts (MMA) career of Pat Healy is seemingly up in smoke.

"Bam Bam" today issued a formal statement through Jason House, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Iridium Sports Agency, revealing that he tested positive for marijuana after his "Fight of the Night"-winning performance against Jim Miller at UFC 159, which took place at Prudential Center in Newark, N.J., on April 27, 2013.

His full statement:

"I would like to start off by apologizing to the UFC, Jim Miller, the MMA community, it's fans, my family, teammates and coaches for my positive testing for marijuana after my UFC 159 fight with Jim Miller. I was fully aware of the UFC and State Commissions drug policies and made poor life choices. I stand behind the UFC and the State Commission's disciplinary actions. I support efforts to make MMA and sports a clean, safe and fair place to compete. First and foremost, I would like to acknowledge and take responsibility for my mistake. I made a very poor choice to socially use marijuana and now I must face the consequences of that choice. I can assure you that I will do everything the UFC and State Commission asks of me and beyond. I will also make a conscious effort to be a better role model within the MMA community."

Neither Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) nor New Jersey State Athletic Control Board, which would be responsible for fines, suspensions and possibly overturning his first victory inside the Octagon to a "No Contest," have provided any additional information about Healy's failed test and possible ramifications.

However, at a minimum, it would appear that Healy would be facing a six-month suspension from mixed martial arts (MMA) competition and possibly ordered to complete an approved drug rehabilitation program. It's quite certain that his win over Miller will also be ruled a "No Contest," which would be a big blow to the Strikeforce import who -- against all odds -- earned the respect of fight fans for his gritty underdog performances.

Healy even cracked the Top 10-ranked list of Lightweight fighters after his come-from-behind submission win over Miller, coming in at No. 9 and, subsequently, calling for a Top 5-ranked opponent in his next outing.

Those plans could now all change because of a admittedly "poor choice."

UFCs Shane Carwin announces retirement from MMA

It's been more than three years since former interim Heavyweight champion Shane Carwin has tasted victory inside the Octagon and almost two since he was beaten from pillar to post by Junior dos Santos at UFC 131 back in 2011, which marked his most recent mixed martial arts (MMA) performance.

And, apparently, his last.

Carwin, 37, recently took to Twitter.com to announce his official retirement from the sport, thanking his family, friends and, of course, fans, but failing to provide an explanation for his decision.

It's no secret that Carwin has struggled mightily with injuries and surgeries during his recent lackluster stretch, going under the knife to repair neck and back issues, as well as hurting his knee in late 2012, which canceled a return about against Roy Nelson.

That last setback, which came at the conclusion of The Ultimate Fighter (TUF) 16, for which he served as coach opposite "Big Country," was more than likely the final straw that compelled "The Engineer" to call it quits.

Carwin burst onto the big scene at UFC 84 back in May 2008, taking out Christian Wellisch with a first round knockout. In fact, opening round stoppages were Carwin's trademark, never sniffing the second stanza until a submission loss to Brock Lesnar at UFC 116 back in July 2010, an undisputed Heavyweight championship match that he appeared to be well on his way to winning thanks to a dominant opening frame.

Then his body failed him.

The most memorable MMA moment during his tenure was over Frank Mir at UFC 111 in round one back in March 2010, smashing the former champion en route to capturing the interim division crown.

Indeed, it marked Carwin's biggest career win, as well as his last.

Believe it or not, we're one-third through the 2013 mixed martial arts (MMA) season, with the sport's leading promotion, Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC), staging 11 events to date.

That's an average of 2.75 UFC events per month, whether on pay-per-view (PPV), network television (FOX) or extended cable (FX and FUEL TV).

Currently, we're in the midst of a two-week break in action with UFC 159: "Jones vs. Sonnen" in the rear-view mirror and UFC on FX 8: "Belfort vs. Rockhold" on the horizon. And that momentary MMA pause apparently means it's time discuss the "incredible Octagon upsets" that have occurred thus far in 2013.

Indeed, UFC recently put together its Top 10 list of upsets, which we have posted below for your irrational review, half-digested consumption and fiery feedback.

In case we're still keeping score, if this "official" list is any indication, UFC 156, UFC on Fuel TV 8 and TUF 17 Finale -- all of which comprised 60 percent of the upsets -- featured the most surprising results. Regardless of your thoughts on the order of this list, most MMA fans would be hard-pressed to find three better events, sans perhaps UFC on Fox 7, of 2013.

And it's impossible to argue that the destruction of "Demolition Man" at the oversized hands of "Bigfoot" was the most jaw-dropping MMA moment of the year so far. It's a hard one to top.

Unless, of course, Chris Weidman makes good on his prediction to topple Anderson Silva at UFC 162 later this year.

Tickets for UFC 162: "Silva vs. Weidman," which is set to go down inside MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada, on July 6, 2013, will go on sale to the general public next Friday morning (May 10, 2013) at 10 a.m. PT.

Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) Fight Club members and UFC Newsletter subscribers, naturally, will be able to scoop up tickets prior to them being available for public consumption thanks to two separate special pre-sales.

UFC 162 will feature a Middleweight championship contest in the main event when top-ranked pound-for-pound fighter -- and longtime 185-pound kingpin -- Anderson Silva puts his title on the line against undefeated mat rat Chris Weidman.

In addition, former UFC Lightweight Champion Frankie Edgar will look to get into the 145-pound win column at the expense of Brazilian jiu-jitsu wunderkind Charles Oliveira, while Chan Sung Jung and Ricardo Lamas will collide in a battle "that could determine the next challenger for the Featherweight title."

Chael Sonnen calls out Wanderlei Silva for 'dirt bag move' in van, vows to 'straighten this thing out' inside Octagon

In other words, Chael Sonnen, stop talking trash about Anderson Silva, the Nogueira brothers and Brazil or Wanderlei Silva will jumble your jaw.

That's the warning "The Axe Murderer" floated to the self-proclaimed "American Gangeter" in the backseat of a cramped van as the unlikely pair was shuttled between Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) promotional events back in Sept. 2010. Sonnen was coming off a 4.5 round beatdown of "The Spider" one month prior at UFC 117, only to lose the 185-pound title fight via triangle choke with less than two minutes remaining on the clock.

In the build up to the match, Sonnen flapped his gums to get under the skin of his Brazilian counterpart. However, in doing so, he also -- for all intents and purposes -- went out of his way to insult, or at least irritate, the entire South American nation.

Silva was upset, so when he had the opportunity, he chided Sonnen for his remarks and told him to basically watch his step. In response, Sonnen -- who at the time appeared to have an immediate rematch with Silva in the works for New Year's Day before he was ultimately suspended by the California State Athletic Commission (CSAC) for using performance-enhancing drugs (PEDs) -- appeared to shrink and offered an awkward, "Thank you."

And the entire tense exchange was caught on camera and posted on YouTube.com (watch it here) to seemingly illustrate that Sonnen is merely a tough-talking turkey.

"Wanderlei pulled a real dirt bag move on me one time," Sonnen explained on the most recent episode of "UFC Tonight" on FUEL TV. "We're in a van together, he mutters something at me, but I can't understand what he's saying for the life of me. Truly, I couldn't understand him. He then puts this video on the Internet, with subtitles, because he knows I can't understand him — I don't even know if that's really what he said or not — and it looks as though I'm conceding to him."

Indeed, the rivalry has endured ever since, with the insults and threats flying back and forth over the years, but their professional paths never seemed to be on a collision course ... until now.

Sonnen is currently in No Man's Land, losing three title fights -- two to Silva at Middleweight and most recently to Light Heavyweight Champion Jon Jones at UFC 159 this past weekend (Sat., April 27, 2013). Silva, meanwhile, has won two of his last three performances, including his ridiculous brawl with Brian Stann in the UFC on Fuel TV 8 main event in March 2013, which he won via second round knockout.

All things considered, a showdown between Sonnen and Silva makes perfect mixed martial arts (MMA) sense, especially considering that both men are open to fighting at 205 pounds or at catchweight. And aside from playing awful April Fools Day jokes in the case of Silva, and healing his fresh wounds in the case of Sonnen, both men appear to have wide open fight schedules.

"I'm not going anywhere until me and Wanderlei Silva straighten this thing out once and for all," Sonnen said. "If you're a fighter, [what Silva did in the van] doesn't fly, it doesn't matter if you're in a van or not. You must respond, and I'm ready to respond to him."

And literally moments after Sonnen made his declaration, Silva took to Twitter.com to respond to Sonnen's latest challenge:

The Ultimate Fighter (TUF) 17 Finale, which took place at the Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas, Nevada, on April 13, 2013, tallied a live gate of $569,075, according to official figures from the Nevada State Athletic Commission (NSAC) released today.

The final attendance of 5,918 was the result of 5,382 tickets sold and 536 complimentary tickets, while 223 seats remained empty.

TUF 17 Finale main event featured former World Extreme Cagefighting (WEC) posterboy, Urijah Faber, continuing his assault on top Bantamweight contenders, forcing Scott Jorgensen to tapout to a rear-naked choke in the fourth round of their 135-pound battle.

Always a groomsman, never the groom.

Meanwhile, in the co-main event, Kelvin Gastelum became TUF 17's Middleweight winner, outworking Uriah Hall en route to a close, and perhaps controversial, upset split decision victory. The other three main card bouts, which aired on FX Networks, saw Cat Zingano stop Miesha Tate in the "Fight of the Night," Travis Browne knockout Gabriel Gonzaga and Bubba McDaniel submit Gilbert Smith.

UFC on FOX 7 drug test results come back clean from April 20 in San Jose

UFC on Fox 7 drug test results are in from the California State Athletic Commission (CSAC), which today (April 29, 2013) confirmed that six mixed martial arts (MMA) fighters on the 24-man fight card tested for illegal/banned substances have all passed with flying colors.

The clean half-dozen, comprising main- and co-main event participants, as well as two other randomly-selected (and unnamed) competitors, were screened after competing at the "Henderson vs. Melendez" event at HP Pavilion in San Jose, Calif., on April 20, 2013, for performance enhancing drugs (PEDs) such as steroids and drugs of abuse like cocaine and marijuana, among others.

Results from these battery of tests all returned negative, according to Sherdog.com.

Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) Lightweight Champion Ben Henderson earned a split decision victory over former 155-pound king of the Strikeforce cage, Gilbert Melendez, in the featured fight of the night, while another former Strikeforce talent, Daniel Cormier, easily took care of business in his Heavyweight hustle against Frank Mir, winning a unanimous decision in the co-headline bout.

The other two main card bouts, which aired in primetime on network television in the United States, saw Josh Thomson become the first man in UFC history to stop Nate Diaz and Matt Brown continue his incredible recent run, knocking out Jordan Mein in their Welterweight affair.

-- Former No. 1 Middleweight Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) contender, and recent 205-pound title challenger, Vitor Belfort, has been catching a significant amount of flak lately for his testosterone replacement therapy (TRT), which is apparently monitored weekly by medical officials associated with the world's leading mixed martial arts (MMA) promotion. "The Phenom" claims it is a medical issue, but other fighters -- even UFC President Dana White (read more here) -- feel the treatments provide an unfair competitive edge. Luke Rockhold, who Belfort fights in the main event of UFC on FX 8, which takes place at Arena Jaragua in Santa Catarina, Brazil, on May 18, 2013, is among the chorus of discontent. The last man to hold the Strikeforce Middleweight belt went from "getting satisfaction" out of beating up TRT users to now, less than one month from fight night, telling MMAFightCorner.com that it inspires him to kick ass even harder. Rockhold also called for uniformity, referring to comments from Nevada State Athletic Commissioner (NSAC) Executive Director Keith Kizer, who suggested that Belfort would probably not be approved to compete under his jurisdiction with TRT because of a failed steroids test back in Oct. 2006. Is Belfort a cheater who deserves a beat down from a better man or is the Brazilian merely playing within the inconsistent rules of the sport?

Alan Belcher continues with the eye injury updates from his official Twitter.com account, providing a pic of lacerated lid that required eight stitches to fix after Michael Bisping accidentally poked him in the third and final round of their UFC 159 co-main event this past weekend. "The Talent," who was unable to continue, went on to drop a technical decision to "The Count." The good news is that injury, which you can watch happen here, was not more serious. A very close call, considering his 2010 surgery to correct a detached retina in the same eye, one that nearly ended his MMA career.
