Mirtle's tweet
I can confirm Don Fehr will take on the NHLPA job. He is in town at the world hockey summit but has not yet met with the media.
OT: State of Sports Media
I saw this Dan Le Batard story tonight and I really thought it was an especially good read. It's not strictly about hockey, but it should interest any sports fan, especially ones with a critical eye for sports media.
Yahoo Hockey's Top 50 UFA
Volchenkov at number 3? How does Paul Martin appeal to everyone?
Fanhouse Lists Top 50 free agents
As the post says, not a terrible crop of 3-6 type stay at home D men. Rosterbate away!
Hey Everyone, It's Eklund
From his latest (uncorrected):
as for Vancouver....
we are talking Schneider and he is and extremely hot commodity. although once again is Vancouver ready to deal the player many feel could challenge and push Roberto in camp.
I am hearing the Islanders and Panthers are most interested in Schneider, and that Washington is content with staying with their two rookie goalies for this season..
Globe Hockey Podcast: Rethinking Goaltending
James Mirtle and Eric Duhatschek with an interesting talk about what the playoffs tell us about the future of goalies in the salary capped NHL. According to them, the days of highly paid goalies playing zillions of games each season are over. Discussion begins at 10:45 and in earnest at 11:20
Thunder Bay Moose?
Puck Daddy reports the Coyotes sale to Jerry Reinsdorf is dead. Sources say a fall back plan, if there is no way to keep the team in Phoenix, is to move the Coyotes back to Winnipeg. And part of that deal supposedly would see Ice Edge Holdings buy the Moose and move them to Thunder Bay, Ontario
US Overnight Ratings are, um, gold
Some context from the linked Puck Daddy post
This is up 46% from the 2002 USA/Canada showdown, and will very likely be the highest-rated hockey game since 1980. The share means that 1 in every 3 Americans with a TV were watching the game. This is, to put it professionally, out of this world.
and
Sunday's game drew a higher overnight rating than every World Series game since 2004 (including every game of Yankees/Phillies last year), every NBA Finals telecast since 1998, and every NCAA Men's Basketball Final Four game since at least '98. Excluding the NFL, the 17.6 overnight for the game is the second-highest of the year for any sporting event, behind only the Texas/Alabama BCS National Championship Game in January (18.2).
UFA Market Set
Alright, At Sean's request, here's a list of all the pending UFA D'men and Centres. Now that San Jose has traded a second rounder for at most six months of Niclas Wallin , I'm guessing that's a benchmark for what similar UFA's might require.
So the list after the jump. Sorry it looks like a tabular nightmare -- I just don't have time to format it all pretty-like.
Gillis Tries Magic -- Trying to turn Schneider into a low pick
According to Sportsnet.ca, Gillis is actively tyring to trade Mathieu Schneider. The same reasons as posited on the Sun's blog, Nuckworld, this morning -- reduced role and lack of playing time -- are cited by Sportsnet.ca as the personal reasons Schneider left the team earlier this month and the motivation for a potential trade.
So, who do you think might take a chance on a 40 yr old D-man and what do you think the price might be?
