Money can't buy success for MLB teams anymore

An article from the Providence Journal (Boston). In essence, spending money still works but not as well as it used to. Or basically the opposite of a Geoff Baker article.

Team President Kevin Mather talks about the team and trade deadline

(Excerpt): Mather says, emphatically, that the Mariners have the financial resources to enhance the roster, despite speculation to the contrary. "I’ve heard national reporters have said that Jack (Zduriencik, the general manager) has no flexibility, that’s why he’s trading like (salaries) for like," Mather said. "One day, I called him in and I said, ‘You know, we have flexibility.’ He said: ‘I know. Kevin, it’s just part of the negotiations.’ " Mather added: "We have flexibility. Our owners are excited where we are."

Abraham Almonte is (almost) getting on base!

It’s been a while since I’ve done a Fanpost and none of my previous entries have involved looking closely into players stats. Something compelled me to give it a shot however. Abraham Almonte...

Tony La Russa could be the Mariners new club president

Not quite there yet though. Per Bob Nightengale, This is speculation but there's some actual meat here. Mariners began interviewing two internal candidates this week. Howard Lincoln did not confirm nor deny La Russa's candidacy. The forgotten story is looking to get more interesting in the coming weeks. Edit: Ryan Divish reports that interviews begin next week with internal candidates. There are also external candidates for consideration.

12/09 - Offseason Thread

I hope I'm not stepping on any toes with this but I figure we could use an offseason thread. Since quite a few transactions have happened during November already, the Winter Meetings and December...

Carlos Peguero's wife tries to use Felix's wife's money....fails.

"The wife of Seattle Mariners outfielder Carlos Peguero is facing federal wire-fraud charges for allegedly using a debit card belonging to the wife of star pitcher Felix Hernandez to make nearly $180,000 in online purchases, according to sources and court documents."

Miguel Olivo quits on his team over playing time (Marlins)

Miguel Olivo leaves the game upon seeing that he was once again left out of the lineup card. Well, that sounds familiar. Miguel Olivo essentially fell out of favor with Eric Wedge after his playing time was reduced last season, hence the lack of praise he was getting during the 2nd half and the potshot Wedge made at the luncheon last January. Maybe Miguel Olivo can hang out with Chone Figgins now!

Chone Figgins released by the Marlins

Hellooooooo rock bottom!

Seattle Times' Steve Kelley heading for retirement

Larry Stone: "For those who haven't heard, Steve announced his pending retirement yesterday after 30-plus years at the Times. Last day will be Jan. 31."

Zduriencik Says stuff to Greg Johns about Josh Hamilton

"Zduriencik says Mariners aren't targeting Hamilton" is what the headline says. Although it's more like they're not going to go out of their way to sign Josh Hamilton. If you have a taste for more "Basically Jack Zduriencik" here you go!

Zduriencik says stuff on Bob and Groz

Posted on Nov 13th, this is a detailed recap of Zduriencik saying things that may or may not be of any real significance. There are a few philosophical tidbits in there (ex. give up a draft pick?).

Mariners trade Doug Fister to the Red Sox for Ryan Lavarnway (it could have been)

Red Sox thought about getting Doug Fister but wasn't crazy about letting go of right-handed catcher Ryan Lavarnway. With Lavarnway's power vanishing in 2012, boy that would've been fun.

Howard Lincoln Interview on opposing arena

Sportspress Northwest (with Art Thiel) sat down with Howard Lincoln, CEO of the Mariners, and Bart Waldman, the club’s legal counsel, to ask questions about the club’s objections to Chris Hansen’s proposed basketball/hockey arena that abuts the team’s parking garage in SoDo.

Kenji Johjima to announce his retirement?

Per Larry Stone, according to Japanese newspapers.

Jose Lopez and Yuniesky Betancourt DFA'd

Jose Lopez was DFA'd today (Aug 7th). Yuniesky Betancourt was DFA'd two days ago (Aug 5th). I chose to header link on Yuni's DFA because it highlights that Yuni is still an idiot.

Ichiro agreed to make a lot of sacrifices in trade

The article doesn't specify what conditions he had to agree to but some are already apparent (Low batting order, playing LF, likely on the bench more often). Something to keep in mind as we watch Ichiro in a Yankee uniform.

Royals claim Adam Moore on waivers

Per Jerry Crasnick "#Royals‬ have claimed catcher Adam Moore on waivers, source says. He was designated for assignment by ‪#Mariners‬ last week." Of course they did.

Shawn Kelley called up; Erasmo Ramirez optioned.

Yay for Shawn Kelley. Yay for Hisashi Iwakuma?

Keeping Felix and Brandon League?

Brandon League might be here for the long haul. He's definitely interested in staying out of loyalty thanks to those blown saves!

Aww...jeez. What the hell, Royals?

"Fox Sports Kansas City announced a major shakeup Friday in its Royals’ broadcast crew that reunites former Angels announcers Rex Hudler and Steve Physioc while reducing duties for Ryan Lefebvre. Plans now call for Lefebvre to handle play-by-play for 90 of the 140 televised games; Physioc will call the remaining 50 games. Hudler will serve as analyst on 120 games, while Jeff Montgomery will fill that role for 20 games." If someone threatens to throw a no-hitter during a White Sox/Royals game I'm going to be forced to use the mute button.

Mariners: The Plan (Video)

Oh, I think I know what direction this team is going to take with their commercials.

Prince Fielder --> Detroit Tigers

"Confirming: Prince close on nine-year, $214M deal with #Tigers, according to source. First reported by @JonHeymanCBS and @TBrownYahoo. #MLB" Per Ken Rosental and others who broke this news prior.

Interview with Pedro Grifol: Director of Minor League Operations

Courtesy of Rick Randall of Seattle Clubhouse (scout.com). Good stuff!

David Aardsma could not be more "Lookout Landing" even if he tried.

@TheDA53 David aardsma At rehab I was asking the guy next to me about his ankle. How'd he break it, what happened, etc. Didn't realize it was Kendry Morales #mybad

Why sign Jack Cust when we could've signed...

Jack Cust (1 year, $2.5M): .322 wOBA, 2 HR (106 wRC+) Vladimir Guerrero (1 year, $8.0M): .315 wOBA, 5 HR (95 wRC+) Hideki Matsui (1 year, $4.25M): .254 wOBA, 3 HR (58 wRC+) The best performing option will now be sharing time with Mike Carp!

Mariners after 29 games (Historically)

Record after 29 games (Includes April and a little of May) 2011: 13-16 2010: 11-18 (61-101) 2009: 15-14 (85-77) 2008: 13-16 (61-101) 2007: 15-14 (88-74) 2006: 12-17 (78-84) 2005: 12-17 (69-93) 2004: 12-17 (63-99) 2003: 18-11 (93-69) --------------------------------------- Will we be good? Will we be bad? Will we be mediocre? The only conclusion I draw from this is....Mariners!

FOX Sports article on Jeff Clement (Warning: painful memories ahead)

Jon Paul Morosi has an update on Jeff Clement as he battles his way through injuries and attempts to gain back the shine he has lost since being drafted in 2005. The focus off this article, actually, is finding a top pick from the 2005 draft that did not work out. Yes, amongst the collection of Troy Tulowitzki, Ryan Braun, Justin Upton, Ryan Zimmerman, Ricky Romero, Mike Pelfrey, Alex Gordon, Andrew McCutchen, Jay Bruce, Jacoby Ellsbury, Matt Garza, Colby Rasmus, Clay Bucholz, and Jed Lowrie lies poor ol' Jeff Clement. Nothing outside of Jeff Clement's current status is exactly news. But hey, lots of fun quotes! Hi there, Bill Bavasi!
