Music City Miracles The Titans are "Mossing" the media.

The Titans hate the media, and I don't blame them.  After all, most of the Nashville media, and mostly all of the national sports media, is complete trash...which is why sites like this exist and flourish.  What's different now, though, is the growing tendency of the team to be open with this disgust instead of keeping it hidden, in the polite Southern way.

While Jeff Fisher has hated the media for some time now - especially most members of the Nashville media, with the notable exception of Mike Keith - the Randy Moss acquisition has seemingly increased this hostility throughout the entire franchise.

If you've been watching the Jeff Fisher show regularly, you know he abuses Cory Curtis but actually despises John Dwyer (who doesn't?) just by watching his reactions and demeanor.  If you saw this week's episode (or, at least, Wednesday's first half of it) you saw a belligerent Fisher almost in flat-out attack mode the entire show, directed at both of the hosts.

Meanwhile, the player and coach press conferences last week and this week have been similarly cold.  Jeff Fisher almost ended one conference before it even began because two reporters wouldn't stop talking amongst themselves.  Vince Young's attitude with the media has clearly changed, as shown most clearly by yesterday's conference where he chided reporters for questioning his ability to recover from his injury and, once again, asking manipulative types of questions about not starting last week designed to get him to appear to be mad at Jeff Fisher for not starting him.

And then, there was the Randy Moss assault on Paul Kuharsky for his idiotic attempt at probing Randy Moss' work ethic.

Randy Moss' acquisition by the Titans has changed this team's demeanor toward the media.  Previously, the Titans tolerated the media and almost looked at media interaction as a rite of passage for players to deal with - you've got to be great on the field, and you've got to be great at dealing with incompetent Nashville media and self-serving national media, in order to be a great all-around player for this team.

Now?  You can clearly see the gloves starting to come off across the entire franchise as it deals with the media.  I believe Randy Moss has, quite properly and much to my pleasant surprise, had this impact.

Randy Moss is a sure-fire Hall of Famer, unlike any other player on the team.  His work ethic has been hailed by his current team and former teams as superb.  And yet, this guy destroys the media every chance he gets.

The Titans, almost on cue, are now starting to feed off of that vibe.

After all, consider the media stories the Titans have dealt with, this year alone: McNair, Kiffin/Kennedy Pola, VY in strip club, Mariani/favoritism in the draft, Titans "play dirty," Kenny Britt issues, potentially trading for Haynesworth, actually trading for Moss, and I'm sure I'm leaving several out.  This is far more media attention than the Titans have usually had to suffer, and needless to say, they're probably chafing a little bit and ready to tell the media off, following Moss' example.

Get ready for less interviews, less stupid questions by reporters, less stupid reporters allowed into the Titans' facility to ask stupid questions, and less information than ever before.  And I think we'll all be better for it - I know at least I will be as a loyal Titans fan and devoted follower of the team.

Music City Miracles I once paid a lot of money to meet Jeff Fisher

I once paid a lot of money to meet Jeff Fisher and eat dinner with him during a charity event.  I can tell you I've never been more disappointed in him or the entire organization after seeing this Peyton Manning jersey stuff.

Some people out there are saying "lighten up, this isn't that big of a deal."  Um, what would everyone be saying if Vince Young showed up somewhere wearing another team's jersey?  Or Keith Bulluck, who's in a contract year?  Fans and the media - AND THE COACHES AND ORGANIZATION - would be all over them, and rightly so.

Fisher was clearly using this as a motivational tactic for his players, understanding that news of this event would spread throughout Nashville.  But just hours after a game your owner calls "the low point in franchise history" is not the time to make jokes of any kind, for any reason, under any circumstances.  Don't you understand how much disappointment is already out there for this lost Titans season?  It's suffocating.

How has Coach Fisher changed so quickly from league coaching idol to laughingstock?  It starts with arrogance.  I genuinely feel as if Fisher would rather lose "his way," with his own coaching staff entirely intact and his roster choices reflected each and every week, and go 0-16 than make needed changes, fire friends on his own staff, and re-orient the franchise in the right direction.

And now, on his local TV show on WKRN, he told fans they should simply "let this go," and that somehow despite an apology, he would "do it all over again."  Fisher is in his own world, where he is mistaking the owner's patience in allowing him to become the longest-tenured coach, with superior coaching performance and unquestionable skill.  In his mind, it sure seems like he views himself as untouchable, and if he gets the firing which his performance this year would certainly warrant, he'll just end up on his feet somewhere else, so who cares?

It's a nauseating, surprising place to be in for this long-time fan of the Tennessee Titans.  But it's not getting any better from here without Fisher's termination or a complete turnabout in attitude, starting against the Jaguars.  Time to ditch all the pretense, put in Vince Young, change/simplify the playbook greatly to suit him better, immediately pull any players during the game who drop passes or otherwise fail to perform, cut naysayers on the roster without hesitation, and actually act like the Fisher of ten years ago that made us proud.

I once paid a lot of money to meet Jeff Fisher.  Now it's looking like Fisher himself's got a price to pay, preferably sooner rather than later.  No doubt he's a great coach and pillar of the community - you can't throw away all he's done just with one bad season - but the RIGHT coach is more important than the BEST coach for our team.
