After last Monday’s five turnover performance and the announcement that Greg McElroy would start Sunday’s game against San Diego, there is no doubt the Jets will look to move Mark Sanchez in the off season.

Moving on from Mark Sanchez will be one of the easiest decisions the organization has had to make in recent memory. Sanchez’s dismal play the past two years has earned him a one way ticket out of Gotham. The organization, coaches, and fans-- have had all they can stomach of the once ordained, "franchise quarterback." Which leads to the bigger questions needed to be answered by the Jets at seasons end?

Where will Mark Sanchez’s one way destination be? What city, if any, would want/have him?

Having played so bad throughout much of the past two seasons, there will be no Peyton Manning-esk tour around the country, interviewing with the highest bidder, for Sanchez. The Jets have made it clear that they are ready to move on and sadly there might not be any interest in Marks services.

The Jets have two options this off season in regards to moving Sanchez. They can find a team willing to make a trade, although not many teams will be inclined to take on Mark’s contract, a contract that guarantees him 8.25 million in 2013, or the Jets can trade/cut Mark and agree to pay the bulk, if not, the entirety of the guaranteed money. Option one in all likelihood is out of the question. No NFL team will be looking to give 8 million dollars to a quarterback that has a career completion percentage just over fifty percent.

The fact of the matter is-- the Jets will be taking most of the financial hit on Sanchez next year. Some feel that the Jets should keep Sanchez if they have to pay him. Make him the back-up or significantly limit his role.

Keeping Sanchez on the team leaves a lingering Pandora’s Box. If the next Jets quarterback struggles, it gives the press free reigns for Sanchez related questions and a continuation of the circus endured this season. The best thing for the Jets to do at this point is part ways with Mark. Both sides have surely had enough of each other. The saying "out of sight, out of mind" certainly applies in this situation.

One thing is for certain. Mark Sanchez has seen his last days as the Jets starting quarterback. Where he ends up at this point, is anyone’s guess.

Any Guesses???

A Mirage

With three weeks remaining in what has been a frustrating season for the Jets, a five game win streak down the backend of the schedule would only cause further detriment to this team.

Hopefully, the New York Jets front office can see that these last five, very winnable, games are a mirage. All five opponents are considered amongst the bottom echelon of NFL teams and sneaking out wins against them shouldn’t give the Jets false hope.

Two weeks ago, a win against the quarterback-less Cardinals was as embarrassing a win as I have seen watching the NFL. Against the Jaguars, the Jets did little to change the perception of themselves. The Jags are a bottom of the barrel NFL team. They might be the worst team in the league next to the Kansas City Chiefs (depending on who you’re talking to). The fact that the game against Jacksonville was competitive tells us all we need to know about the Jets. They sadly belong in the same conversation as the Jaguars, Titans, Bills, etc.

Winning these next three games and ending the regular season on a five game win streak would be an absolute mirage. This Jets team was unable to put together back- to- back wins all season when facing the better teams the NFL has to offer. They were embarrassed by the better teams in the league (San Francisco, New England) and at no point this year did they give any indication that they were a legitimate team to be reckoned with.

The concern for me would be the Jets taking these meaningless wins at face value. Whether the Jets win out or not, the changes must be made at the general manager position (for sure), quarterback and possibly head coach. These final five games cannot impede on the organizations decision to move forward without Tannenbaum, Sanchez and possibly Rex.

Hopefully at seasons end Woody Johnson will be ale to see the problems that many of us have noticed all season and make the obvious decisions.

The Missing Intangible

One of the over arching themes surrounding the 2012 New York Jets has been the lack of talent assembled by General Manager Mike Tannenbaum. This team lacks the dynamic play makers necessary to be competitive in todays NFL. Having talented players gives any team the opportunity to win games and be successful. But when talent is at a minimum, it’s those teams that possess true Leadership that find a way to prosper.

A scarcity of talent is assuredly a detriment to any team. But what the Jets lack in talent, which can always be acquired, they lacks that much more in leadership. From the coaches, to the players, I’ve struggled to find the leadership "and leader" that inspires this team to play at a level that rarely has anything to do with G-D given talent.

On any successful football team, there is never doubt as to who the leaders are. Leaders are vocal, leaders lead by example; they put the team before themselves. They shoulder the responsibility of holding all others to the same standard.

On this team, it is difficult to identify who that person(s) is. Seldom, if ever, do we see Mark Sanchez take a position of leadership. As the franchise quarterback, Mark has not stepped up, been vocal or lead by example. The leadership qualities that we never question in Drew Brees and Peyton Manning are qualities that we have not seen from Mark Sanchez and quite frankly, I don’t believe he possesses.

One the defensive sides of the ball, some of the veterans that we expect to be leaders have not stepped up either. Bart Scott, Calvin Pace, Antonio Cromartie, (not sure if I "expect" it from him) players that have been in this league for a long time, have allowed dysfunction and tomfoolery to become synonymous with Jets football.

Some would say that the head coach ought to be the leader of any team. And to that I would have to agree. I just don’t believe Rex Ryan has been that. Jets players have continuously reflected poorly on their coach and the organization by speaking too freely and giving the sports media free reigns to criticize the discipline of this team. Successful leaders don’t have these issues with their players. Rex Ryan established himself as a players coach and as a result lacks the respect/fear that leaders like Belichick, Parcells and Landry have/had from their players.

This off season, whether it is via the draft or free agency, the Jets should seek out talent of course, but high character players as well. This team desperately needs an identity change and bringing in new faces, with new attitudes, will serve them well.

For 17 years we have watched Ray Lewis epitomize leadership on and off the field. Recently, we have seen other first round picks like Patrick Willis and Brian Cushing change the culture of their franchises, doing exactly the same. This spring, the NFL draft will feature another talented linebacker that embodies all the "Intangibles" that the doctor has prescribed for the 2013 New York Jets.

A Franchise QB: Looking Ahead

Before the season began, Jets fans could not come to a consensus over Mark Sanchez being their franchise quarterback. This season, by all accounts, has been a continuation of last years let down. Sanchez has played poorly and Jets fans are fed up with the mediocrity. The trade for Tim Tebow, as we have learned, was a publicity stunt gone sour. As the end of the season draws near, with the Jets seemingly out of the playoff picture, the question moving forward for the organization will be—who will be the QB of the future?

To the dismay of all New York Jets fans, this years NFL draft class will not feature any Andrew Lucks, RG3’s, or even Ryan Tannehill caliber quarterbacks. If the Jets see fit to do so, they can pursue USC quarterback Matt Markley, or West Virginia's Geno Smith as their future, although something tells me the results probably would be similar to the Sanchez experiment.

That said, its no secret that the Jets must move in a different direction. In his fourth year Mark Sanchez is still making careless mistakes with the football, that at this point, are intolerable. He hasn’t proven to the fan base, NFL analyst, and for that matter, the organization, that he is capable of leading this team to a championship.

In the months preceding this season, the media compared Mark Sanchez’s career to that of Giants quarterback Eli Manning. Manning was dreadful at times in his first three years for big blue. He was able turn it around in year four, leading the Giants to their first Superbowl victory since LT and Parcells. It was my presumption that Sanchez deserved this year to prove his worth to the organization. He has proven nothing! Fielding Sanchez as the starter in next season’s opener will only agitate the remaining Jets fans. Sanchez had his chance, its time for this organization to cut their losses and find a quarterback that will get the job done!

Now… it would be absolutely foolish of me to say that the Jets are going to see the next coming of Peyton Manning fall into their lap (probably not going to happen). But I will say that several, benched, signal callers have caught my attention as potential replacements for California Boy wonder Marky, Mark Sanchise (little bit of a low blow).

And here they are:

Alex Smith: In my opinion, Jim Harbaugh was waiting for his opportunity to start Colin Kaepernick. Kaepernick was his draft choice, unlike Smith who was adopted by Harbargh like a red headed step child. Harbargh will move forward with Kaepernick in my opinion, opening up the door for the Jets (and others) to take a look at Smith. Smith has done nothing but win games the past two years and I believe he has come into his own as a starter in this league. He doesn't have the huge, Jay Cutler are strength, but he can make throws and put a team in a position to win.

Matt Flynn: Although Matt Flynn was beaten out of the starting quarterback spot by Russell Wilson, I still believe he can come in and produce. Flynn is talented and would certainly be an upgrade. I understand his body of work doesn’t speak volumes, but lets face it, his minimal starting QB resume and 92.8% career completion percentage is intriguing, especially when looked at in comparison to Sanchez’s career numbers.

At 4-6 the New York Jets have plenty of ground to make up as they fight back into the AFC playoff race. With six games remaining in the regular season, there is little margin for error. Tonight's game, against the rival Patriots, will have massive implications as to how the Jets will play out their final five games.

The Patriots will be the toughest test for Gang Green down the home stretch. In the weeks following tonight's game, the Jets face five teams (Jaguars, Bills, Titans, Cardinals, Chargers) all with losing records. These next couple of weeks shape up nicely for the Jets to make a run. If the team can get consistent, steady play from quarterback Mark Sanchez, (easier said then done) they certainly have a punchers chance-- if they can take care of business tonight.

Realistically, the Jets must go at least 5-1 these next six games, if they want a shot at the postseason. And even that might not cut it. Two losses in the next six weeks will have the Jets at 8-8, and all but certainly watching the playoffs from home.

With this season having been a disappointment thus far, any thought of the postseason might appear as wishful thinking... but they still have a chance. Sure, Sunday's win came against an inconsistent Rams team. And maybe I'm being generous, giving the Jets the benefit of the doubt, (which I have not done all season) but this season has been bad enough... Why not hope for something positive? If the Jets loss three of their next six games and miss out on the post season for a second straight year...Whatever, we suspected they would. But if they can pull off a Miracle (and it would be a Miracle) and make a run, how could any sports fan (Jets fan or Anti-Jet) not appreciate that kind of Drama.

This season has been a complete sham for the New York Jets. At this point it is time for the Jets to part ways with GM Mike Tannenbaum and Head Coach Rex Ryan.

Today's report of several players criticizing Tim Tebow has once again shown us how dysfunctional the Jets locker room has become under Rex Ryan. A season ago Rex was criticized heavily when the team lost composure down the stretch and bashed one another in the media. The issue between Mark Sanchez and Santonio Holmes caused a rift within the locker room and once out in media, the Jets organization was painted in a bad light.

A year later we have the same issue. Several "Anonymous" (coward) Jets players told a New York Daily news reporter that Tim Tebow is a terrible quarterback, is nothing more then an athlete but not a quarterback. Now... I understand that Tim Tebow doesn’t have the conventional skill set of a Pro quarterback. Yes, he can’t throw for the life of him. But seriously... to expose these sentiments in the media and call out Tebow, whom I might add, doesn’t even see the field for the majority of games, is absolute bush league and disgraceful. Tim Tebow has done nothing less then what has been asked of him. Whether Rex Ryan wanted him or not, Tebow has been a team player all season and certainly did not warrant this blatant disrespect.

This latest report further reveals how much disconnect and lack of respect Rex has in the locker room. These Jets players don’t respect Rex Ryan. They parade themselves in the media with no regard as to how it will reflect upon their coach. The more they say, the worst Rex looks, but they don’t seem to care. In a press conference today Rex said he feels this team is a very close unit. C’mon Rex! Sell that junk elsewhere. You can’t tell me that you have a close, unified, group. The locker room turned on Tim Tebow!! This guy might be the nicest person in the world, the second coming of Christ himself, and you have teammates talking badly about him…it’s absolutely ridiculous.

This team doesn’t care whom they throw under the bus. Teammates, coaches, the organization… Everyone seems to be fare game. Where is the leadership on this team? And where is Mark Sanchez in all of this? Last I checked, Sanchez is the quarterback playing terribly, not Tebow. Sanchez is the quarterback with the lowest completion percentage in the league! A year ago anonymous Jets players came out and criticized Sanchez in the media for his poor play. Nick Mangold came to the defense of Sanchez. Who will stand up for Tebow?

For the sake of the franchise and the fans, Rex Ryan has to go and new leadership must take over. It’s no surprise that the Patriots and Steelers organizations don’t have these issues and are successful as a result. Those teams have leaders that command, and demand, the respect of their players. Mike Tomlin and Bill Belichick don’t worry about their players parading in the media and pointing fingers.

The quote says "Attitude reflects leadership." Right now leadership in this organization is in question.

It was a great first two seasons under Rex Ryan. He brought this organization instant success and back page publicity, but his welcome is wearing out fast. He has allowed this team to become an embarrassment on, and off, the field. Sure, Rex is responsible for putting the Jets back on the map, and he deserves credit for it. But many of those reasons for being relevant once again, are all the wrong reasons.

AFC SOUTH

Houston Texans: Having covered and admired the game of Brian Cushing since his days at Bergen Catholic H.S. in Northern New Jersey, I felt the Texans would lose a lot of defensive efficiency and swagger when Cushing went down for the season with a torn ACL. I WAS WRONG! The Texans have been the best team in the AFC thus far. The defense has continued to play lights out lead by defensive end J.J. Watt, who is having a tremendous season. Matt Schaub has solid numbers on the year and has the Texans at 8-1 (Tied for the best record in the league). Last season the Texans were poised to make a push in the postseason but lost Schaub late in the year and struggled to get consistent efficiency from then rookie QB T.J Yates. Arian Foster has been a beast in the run game for the Texans. Foster is 3rd in the league rushing and 1st in touchdowns rushing. Having a solid run game and a great defense takes a lot of pressure off Schaub, and will be a great recipe for success come playoff time.

Indianapolis Colts: Other than die hard Colts fans, it would have been extremely difficult to find anyone betting on the Colts to be a playoff team this season. After losing Peyton Manning last season to neck surgery, the Colts had their worst season since drafting Manning back in 1998. Gone is Peyton to Denver, where he is having an MVP year. And in steps Andrew Luck. Talk about having to live up to an icon in Peyton Manning and the high expectations of being the #1 overall pick. Andrew Luck has lived up to the hype and more. He has the Colts in a position that no one thought they would be in. The Colts won 2 games last season. They currently sit at 6-3 with plenty of winnable games ahead. Head Coach Chuck Pagano’s battle with cancer has inspired this team. Down the stretch the Colts face 4 teams with losing records. If they can take advantage of those teams and reach 10 wins, I believe the Colts will make the postseason, but be a first round out. The Colts are certainly not a Superbowl contender, this year, but they have made significant improvement in just 1 year. Impressive!!

Jacksonville Jaguars: This will be quick because there is nothing to talk about with this team. The only person worth referring to when it comes to the Jaguars is Maurice Jones-Drew. I actually feel terrible for MJD. He held out for a new contract that ultimately was not given to him, now he is hurt and I hope he sits out the rest of the way. The Jaguars are in complete turmoil as a franchise. They drafted Blaine Gabbert to be their franchise quarterback… Not working out!! Gabbert has not played well and does not look like he is going to be the future quarterback for this organization. This past year the team drafted WR Justin Blackmon, whom they believed to be the best wide out in the draft… Has not worked out thus far either!! The only thing the Jags have, or HAD, going for them was MJD. Now who knows if MJD will be back with this team next year? I for sure hope he doesn’t have to suffer another season with this mess of a team. Maybe they can bring in Tim Tebow next season since the Jets don't use him. He might actually rejuvenate that franchise.

Tennessee Titans: This season was supposed to be a coming out party for 2nd quarterback Jake Locker, but injuries have kept him sidelined. Back-up Matt Hasselback has played admirably in Lockers absence but this team will go as locker does. This team will not make the postseason this year. They need to sure up issues on the offensive line. Chris Johnson is dangerous a weapon as there is in the league. He can break a run for a touchdown at any point during the game, but has not had the blocking to do so. The Titans need to get Locker back on the field. He is talented and makes this team better. If the Titans can play well down the stretch and win 4 of their final 6 games, look for them to be in the playoff hunt next season.

AFC WEST

Denver Broncos: Was there a bigger story this offseason then Peyton Manning? The answer is No. And the beneficiaries of Manning’s move have been the Denver Broncos, who currently sit at 6-3 with Peyton at the helm. Peyton Manning has answered all the questions that surrounded him prior to the season. His arm looks strong, he’s completing passes in tight windows, and his numbers are vintage Peyton numbers. The Broncos benefit greatly by playing in the worst division in all of football. However, with Peyton Manning at quarterback, this team is a legit contender and a tough out in the postseason. If Denver ‘s defense can play at a level close to what we saw last year when Tim Tebow made his run, look for the Broncos to make it deep in the playoffs this year.

Kansas City Chiefs: Another team in complete disarray. This team needs to trade for, draft, steal a quarterback that they can build around. The Matt Cassel experiment has not worked out. Cassel was supposed to save this franchise, instead, what we learned was that his success in the Patriots offense was an aberration. The Chiefs need a quarterback in the worst way. They will continue to be a laughing stock until they get themselves a legit quarterback. Nothing really left to say. No success now, and the future looks foggy.

Oakland Raiders: Since Rich Gannon, Tim Brown and Jerry Rice led this team to a Superbowl, they have had very little, mostly No, success. Last season quarterback Carlson Palmer was brought in to solidify the quarterback position and turn this team around. That has not happened!! Running back Darren McFadden has shown that he can be a top running back in this league but he has failed to show that he can stay healthy. Nothing seems to ever go right for this team no matter what moves they make. Palmer is definitely in the latter stage of his career and I don't suspect he will be around much longer. Hopefully for the Raiders, Tyrell Pryor can develop into a play-making, dynamic, quarterback that he has the potential to be. All bets are off though when it comes to the Raiders… G-D rest the soul of the great AL Davis but he really set this team up for failure with a lot of the decisions he made (drafting Darius Heyward-Bey in the first round). I don’t believe they will make a turnaround anytime soon.

San Diego Chargers: When I think of Phillip Rivers, I can’t help but think of an accident waiting to happen. Phillip Rivers is as talented as any quarterback in the league but doesn’t have the composure that elite quarterbacks show. We have seen Rivers make tremendous plays with his arm only to follow them with horrible decisions that result in turnovers. I understand that without risk there is no reward but too often Rivers does so much harm to his team playing reckless. The Chargers need to move in another direction in my opinion. This organization needs to part ways with Rivers and Head Coach Norv turner. There have been good years with Rivers and he is certainly talented enough to carry a team, but not this team. Rivers should look for a change of scenery and a new city where he can start over. The Chargers look like a team in decline and they will not make the postseason this year.

AFC EAST

Buffalo Bills: This team was supposed to be much improved this season but has severely under achieved. The Bills tried to revamp their defense this offseason by signing Mario Williams. The signing of Williams has amounted to seemingly nothing. The Bills are 3-6 and dead last in the AFC east. Paying Ryan Fitzpatrick and looking to him to be the quarterback of the future also looks to be a bad mistake on the part of Buffalo. Time and time again we watch Fitzpatrick make catastrophic mistakes that show how limited he is as a quarterback. There really isn’t much to say about the Bills. They need a lot of changes: Defense, QB, Coaching, etc…

Miami Dolphins: The Miami Dolphins have had moments this season where they have shown glimpses of what they can be in 2-3 years. Drafting Ryan Tannehill was certainly a huge pick up for the Dolphins. In a league that has become quarterback driven, Tannehill will give the Dolphins a chance to win big in the future. Tannehill is a great talent and needs a few years to mature. Reggie Bush has continued to show signs that he can be a productive running back. The Dolphins won’t do anything this year but they are a very intriguing team moving forward to next year and beyond. If the Dolphins can ad weapons on the outside for Tannehill and a complimentary RB to Bush, they can be a team to recon with in years to come.

New England Patriots: The Patriots continue to be the class of the AFC East. The Patriots offense is among the best in the league year after year. As long as Brady can produce with the plethora of weapons he has at his disposal, the Patriot will be perennial contenders. The Patriots have plenty to clean up on the defensive side of the ball. They have looked dreadful for much of the past two seasons. Bill Belichick has relied mostly on his offense to win games. In the playoffs this way of winning can come back to bite you. Belichick knows he has one of the greats in Brady, so he’ll continue to put games in Tom’s hands. Look for the Patriots to make another deep run in the playoffs this year.

New York Jets: Soon to Come!!

AFC NORTH

Baltimore Ravens: Losing Ray Lewis for the season was a huge blow to the Baltimore Ravens. Ray Lewis has inspired and led this team for the last 17 seasons. Although his game was on the decline, his presence has never been questioned. This Ravens team does not resemble the Ravens of old that dominated teams with a ferocious defense. Ray Lewis has aged and will have to inspire from the sidelines for the rest of the season. The NEW Ravens will go as far as Joe Flacco and Ray Rice will take them. Flacco has played very well this year throwing for 2,331 yards and 13 TD’s, but has had games where he’s disappeared. Ray Rice is the motor that drives this team. If Ray Rice can get through the season healthy, and play big come the postseason time (I believe the Ravens will make the playoffs), the Ravens have a chance to make serious noise. Rice is one of the best in the game and will take pressure off of Joe Flacco. But make no mistake, if the Ravens are going to get to a Superbowl, Joe Flacco will have to get them there.

Cincinnati Bengals: A big weekend win over the New York Giants doesn’t say much to the credit of the Cincinnati Bengals. They have a legit quarterback in Any Dalton, Yes. And A.J. Green is a STUD. But this team plays inconsistently much too often for me to sing their praises and have any high expectations for them. The defense has under achieved. Last week head coach Marvin Lewis called out Dalton and starting middle linebacker Ray Maualuga, challenging both to take a more assertive leadership rolls on the team. The Bengals remain a middle of the road team. They play in a tough division but have shown little signs that they are ready to take control of the division. I do not believe they will make the postseason this year. Moving forward to next year, the Bengals need another weapon opposite A.J. Green and some more playmakers on defense.

Cleveland Browns: Not much to say about the Cleveland browns. Aside from Trent Richardson the Browns are not very good. Quarterback Brandon Weeden has had some success but I am not sold just yet (Definitely an upgrade from Colt McCoy). The Browns rank 26th in total defense and 29th in total offense. They have 2 wins on the season and I only give them a chance in 2 of their last 7 games. The upside for Cleveland is that they have been in every game, and have played tough. They need play makers at wide receiver. Weeden has a huge arm. Look for the Browns to get him some talent on the outside. If Trent Richardson can continue to develop into the running back he was drafted to be, and the organization can draft, trade for a big time playmaker, look for the Browns to be more competitive in the years to come.

Pittsburgh Steelers: The Pittsburg Steelers have had the luxury of Bill Cowher as a head coach and Mike Tomlin as his successor. Both Coaches in my eyes are future hall of famers, although Tomlin still has much to prove. The Steelers are a perennial playoff team and I believe they will make the postseason again. After a slow start this year the Steelers have weathered the storm and have won 4 of their last 5 games. Big Ben is one of the best in the game and has the ability to extend plays like no other quarterback in the league. The offense has been able to stay on the field, being one of the best units on 3rd down. The Defense seemed to have lost a step from what we are accustomed to seeing but remain one of the best, if not, the best defense in the league. The defense reflects the attitude of their head coach. They play tough week after week, year after year. The Steelers will undoubtedly be in the mix come postseason. They have a legitimate chance whenever and however they reach the playoffs.

To Be Continued...

Mid-Season Overview: New York Jets

I’d like to start by sending my deepest condolences to anyone and everyone affected by Hurricane Sandy. I am a resident of Staten Island, New York and the devastation that has hit my community is truly unbelievable. I am extremely lucky to say that my home escaped the storm without severe damage. Extended time without power was difficult but there are many people who have lost everything and my heart and mind are with them in this rough time. G-D Bless!!

Now On to the Jets!!!

This season by all accounts, has been a disappointment. After 8 weeks of football the New York Jets sit at 3-5, having lost 4 of their last 5 games. The team has looked pathetic in many stretches this year. In their last game they were embarrassed by the Dolphins after a week of trash talk between the two teams.

Many have called for Mike Tannenbaum’s job. He certainly was unable assemble a team capable of playing at the highest level, by NFL standards. At the beginning of the season Rex Ryan was on record saying that this New York Jets team was probably the best he has had in his 3 years with the organization. If that’s truly how Rex feels, he should also be submitted a pink slip at seasons ends.

As for the team itself and players… The NFL has undoubtedly become a quarterback driven league. I’m sure we can agree that any team in this league hoping to hoist a Lombardi trophy is going to need exceptional play at the quarterback position. It has almost become nauseating to state my opinion about Mark Sanchez but here it goes…

Its seems to me that Mark Sanchez takes tremendous leaps forward on occasions, but as fast as he takes steps forward, he takes double the amount of steps backwards. I truly felt that the loss to New England would be a turning point game for Sanchez this season and in his career. Yes, I understand the Patriots have a horrific secondary and maybe that game was an aberration. But Sanchez looked the best I have seen him that night. He threw the ball with confidence, looked in control, and put his team in a position to win the game. Then came the Miami game where Sanchez and the offense reverted back to their normal selves, scoring a measly 9 points. When will the Jets ever get consistency from Sanchez??

I’m not ready to completely throw in the towel on Sanchez. In my eyes he deserves this full season before he is written off. However, and let me be clear, if the Jets continue down this path of mediocrity, Sanchez, Ryan and Tannenbaum should all be looking for new jobs come the offseason.

Week by week the trade for Tim Tebow looks more and more like a publicity stunt. Tim Tebow can help this team but sadly isn’t going to be given the chance. Many people believe relieving Sanchez of his duties and letting Tebow step in is a clear indication that the Jets have given up on the season… Why!!??

Sanchez has obviously struggled. He undoubtedly is the better "Pure" quarterback, and it is not my opinion that Tebow should take 100% of the snaps. Rex Ryan has stated on many occasions that Tebow was brought in because there are certain things, qualities he has that can benefit the Jets offense. At this point in the season, with a 3-5 record, and the offense having looked pitiful more then not, I think its time to give Tebow a chance… What is there to lose? Games? Well we’re already doing that!

I seldom have reservations regarding the Jets defense. They certainly have not played to the standard that we have grown accustom to seeing from Rex Ryan coached defenses, but they have clearly had no help from the offense. The Secondary has played well in the absence of Darelle Revis. Antonio Cromartie has proven his worth to this team and looks to be playing for a new contract. My biggest problem with the Jets defense, and this is another Ryan/Tannenbaum debacle, is their inability to get after the passer. Quinton Coples was the Jets first overall pick and he has looked as advertised! No… Not a 6’6, 290 pound, relentless pass rusher, but rather a guy that takes plays off and doesn’t give his whole self for 60 minutes.

Sunday’s game at Seattle, which seemed like a sure win before the season, will be a dog fight.
The Seahawks have proven that they can play with the elite teams in this league and they will give the Jets all they can handle. Marshawn Lynch is as tough as they come and he will test the Jets ability to make tackles. This is a must win for the Jets!!! Lose this game and the season is all but over.

Hopefully the Jets have something up their sleeve for Seattle, or maybe they will come out with a new found tenacity this second half of the season. Whatever they do, it better happen soon, fans are getting restless and I can’t imagine owner Woody Johnson is happy with the results at this point… Unless Mitt takes home the election!!

"A loss is a loss, I’m not digging moral victories" said tight-end Dustin Keller to the media after the Jets 29-26 overtime loss to the New England Patriots Sunday in Foxboro. "We have to move on" said Keller, "We can’t let one loss turn into two."

It seems that the majority of the New York Jets team and organization realize the opportunity that was squandered Sunday when Mark Sanchez fumbled the football in overtime, and the Jets lost a close game, falling to 3-4 overall on the season. The Jets, who entered Sunday’s game against the Patriots as 10½ point underdogs, looked impressive as they were able to come back from a 10 point fourth quarter deficit to nearly steal a game away from Tom Brady and the Patriots.

Mark Sanchez looked as impressive against the Patriots Sunday, as he has all season. (With maybe the exception of Buffalo) Sanchez finished the game 28-41 for 328 yards, 1 TD, 1 Int. In the loss, Sanchez proved to many of his harshest critiques, myself included, that he has the ability to put this team on his back and make accurate throws in big spots. In the fourth quarter alone Sanchez was 10-12 for 114 yards and 1 TD. Sanchez looked comfortable and on the verge of doing what many deemed the impossible.

Unfortunate for many, the Jets would eventually give up a field goal on the opening possession of overtime and Mark Sanchez would fumble the football on the Jets possession to give the game to New England. It was a heartbreaking end to a game in which Sanchez deserved to win, but knows he must do EVERYTHING right, to win.

The Jets defense played well Sunday against the leagues best offensive team. Cornerback Antonio Cromartie was able to shut down the oppositions top outside receiver for the third week in a row. Cromarite has stepped up and played big in the absence of All-Pro Darelle Revis. He has put the onus on himself to make sure the Jets defensive production continues while Revis recovers from his torn ACL. The secondary did an outstanding job taking away Tom Brady’s targets. The defense did give up 131 yards on the ground, but were able to slow down the Patriots and keep the game close.

My Notes: I want to start by saying that as great as Mark Sanchez played on Sunday, and I do believe he played exceptionally well, he must learn that taking a sack isn’t always the worst case. Too many times during the game Sanchez tried to avoid taking sacks, by throwing the ball away while on his way to the ground. On the final play of the game Sanchez should have tucked the ball, taken the sack, and lived for the next play.

I do believe this game could be a turning point game in Sanchez’s season and/or career. There was a confidence about Sanchez Sunday that I have not seen. Many times during the game, it seemed as if the inevitable mistake was going to come from Sanchez to seal the Jets fate. Snap after snap Sanchez continued to throw precise passes for first downs to keep the Jets driving. Sanchez proved more in this loss then he has in each of the Jets victories this season. Hopefully he can build on this performance and continue to carry this team when he needs to.

WR Stephen Hill dropped a crucial pass late in the game that would have given the Jets a much better chance to close this one out. I have been extremely critical of Hill this season for his inability to make catches like the one he dropped Sunday. Hill has the athleticism and talent but those talents are nullified at the WR position if you cannot hang-on to the ball. He is a rooki and came from an offense that was run heavy in college. He had issues catching the ball in college as well. Hopefully with repetition, he will learn to look the football into his hands. He is doing himself and the team a huge disservice by continuing to drop big passes.

The Jets play another division opponent next week when Miami travels to MetLife stadium. In their first meeting the Jets squeaked out a victory over the Dolphins. Ryan Tannehill has made significant improvement in his game since he faced the Jets several weeks ago. If the Jets can let go of the stained emotions endured from this week’s loss (which by all accounts they have) and play at the same level, they will have a great opportunity to win another divisional game and stay in the hunt for the playoffs.

Last Sunday’s game at Metlife stadium was a game the New York Jets needed to have to remain atop a tight AFC east. The Jets took the bull by the horns, hammering the Indianapolis Colts 35-9. Shonne Green and the Jets run game, which have been non-existent early on this season, made a huge impact totaling 252 yards on the ground. Mark Sanchez wasn’t asked to do much in the air but looked good when his number was called upon. He finished the game 11-18 for 82 yards, 2 TD’s and a 109.0 passer rating. The success of the run game allowed the Jets to control the clock and keep Sanchez from having to throw the ball down field-- where he has struggled this year. The Jets enter a huge week 7 game against their AFC rival’s, The New England Patriots. Both teams are tied for first (and last) in the division and will look to keep their division record’s unblemished.

Last week, by all accounts, was a great win for the Jets. The run game came alive, the defense recorded a few sacks and Mark Sanchez looked comfortable, completing some passes in tight windows. The Jets are flying high off their win against the Colts but unfortunately, and I hate to say it, there will be an emergency landing Sunday in Foxboro.

The New England Patriots have by no means been perfect this season. They’ve had their hiccups and currently sit at 3-3, much like the rest of the AFC. The Patriots losses this season to the Arizona Cardinals, Baltimore Ravens and most recently the Seattle Seahawks were all close games. The Patriots three losses have come by a combined total of 4 points. They have been unable to close out games like the Patriots of the past but could easily be 6-0 heading into this week 7 matchup.

I am aware of the backlash coming my way, but I just don’t see how the Jets can win this game. In their losses, the Patriots have played against defenses that are better than the Jets defense. Arizona and Seattle both get after the quarterback with greater efficiency then the Jets, and although Baltimore has struggled defensively this season, their offense has been able to step up with the emergence of Joe Flacco. In their losses, Tom Brady has played like Tom Brady, and has put up eye popping numbers. Sunday in Foxboro, I expect the same. The Jets defense played well last week against a young Colts team with a rookie quarterback (albeit the best rookie quarterback I have ever seen). This week they face a three time Superbowl Champion and arguably the best quarterback of our time.

The Patriots defense has been one of the better teams in the league defending the run this year. They have a solid front seven and with the addition of rookie pass rusher, Chandler Jones; they have been able to apply pressure on opposing quarterbacks. The Patriots have been vulnerable against the pass, especially, the deep ball. The Jets should look to take advantage of the Patriots young/injured secondary, but Mark Sanchez has yet to prove that he can be an efficient and consistent passer.

We have yet to see Mark Sanchez play at a level worthy of high recognition. He did throw for two touchdowns a week ago, but 82 yards passing just means the Jets asked him to manage the game and not take risk. Against the Patriots, Sanchez will have no choice but to take risk if the Jets want to keep the game within reach. Being a game manager this week is not going to suffice against a high powered offense.

Tom Brady has historically been able to put up great numbers against the Jets, Darrelle Revis included. I certainly can appreciate how the Jets defense turned it on last week but the Patriots are a different beast. Brady and Belichick are going to throw the ball, score touchdowns and put up points. Although the Jets were able to show vast improvements last week, I’m not sold on Mark Sanchez’s ability to keep up with Tom Brady and the no huddle offense. The Jets lack the fire power and sadly the quarterback play to win this game.

Does Mark Sanchez Have It? “The Make of a QB”

In my time covering and playing football, there has always been an appreciation I’ve had for the quarterback position and those who excel at it. As the most important position on any football team, a quarterback always assumes the roll of leader, player-coach, and unfortunately at times, scapegoat. A winning quarterback is given free reigns by fans. He is respected, feared, and put on a pedestal that few have been able to attain.

It has always been my view that every successful quarterback possesses three distinct qualities…"The Three C’s." Those qualities are (in no particular order) Confidence, Composure and Consistency. These qualities are the make up of every winning quarterback. They are qualities that anyone can clearly see in Aaron Rodgers, Drew Brees and Tom Brady. Jets fans have questioned whether Mark Sanchez will ever develop these qualities. Can Sanchez take control of this team with the Confidence of a leader? Can he play with a Consistency that puts the Jets in a position to win every week? Can Sanchez possess the Composure to take his highs with modesty and his lows with perseverance? Does Mark Sanchez have the make of a Winning Quarterback?

Confidence: In my opinion this is the most important characteristic of a quarterback. Without confidence none of the other qualities can be accomplished. When great quarterbacks step up under center they have a confidence about themselves, a demeanor that resonates in the teammates around them. As fans, that confidence gives us a small sense of security, we assume the best because we know the quality is there, we have seen it. We need to see this confidence in Mark Sanchez. His teammates need to see it. Sanchez must come out of his sheltered comfort and be confident in himself as a football player and as a Man. He must earn the respect of Rex Ryan and Mike Tannenbaum, let them know they cannot trade for another quarterback without consulting him! Time to step up Mark Sanchez, this season and your tenure with the Jets depends on it.

Composure: Composure is defined as: The state or feeling of being calm and in control of oneself. A quarterback must always be in control of his emotions. He can never get too high on his accomplishments or too low on himself for mistakes. Football is a game of inevitable mistakes; the great quarterbacks have the composure to take mistakes with wisdom and carry on to the next play confidently and without remorse. Cam Newton is criticized for the praise he indulges himself with when he makes a great play; Jay Cutler is criticized for allowing his game to spiral out of control when he makes mistakes. Sanchez must learn to have a short memory when he makes mistakes and also when things are going well. He must approach each snap composed and ready to throw a touchdown pass no matter what the outcome of the previous possession was.

Consistency: In sports, not just football, the great talents are transformed into icons when they are capable of performing consistently at a high level. The quarterbacks that have been successful, for the most part, have been consistent throughout their careers. They show up day in and day out and produce because they understand it is expected of them. No one is perfect; a bad game for any and every quarterback is a certainty. Putting those poor performances behind oneself and continuing to produce consistently insures the opportunity to win every week. A consistent quarterback has the ability to carry his team to victory. He has the backing of his team because they know he will come out and play at a high level. The Jets need to start seeing consistency in Mark Sanchez if they are ever going to believe in him and back him as their franchise quarterback. The locker-room has to believe that he will play at a high level every game, no matter who the opponent is, no matter the hardships.

It has taken a few days to collect my thoughts about what transpired in the Jets dismantling Sunday. Sunday’s game against the 49ers was, let’s face it, an embarrassment on all accounts. The defense played well for a half but could not hold up any longer as the offense continued to look utterly dreadful. Mark Sanchez could not find any open receivers and the run game, well… you know what that’s been this year.

Having played this great game of football for 14 years I firmly understand that the game is as much a team sport as any. Far be it from me to place blame on any single individual when it comes to wins and losses. However, in the NFL there are people who are paid bountifully, and given the responsibility to assemble a team and field the best product possible. That employee for the Jets would be General Manager Mike Tannenbaum. Now, I don’t think it would be fair or rational to place total blame on Tannenbaum for what is quickly becoming a huge debacle, but in the opening month of the season it is clear as day that Tannenbaum dropped the ball as it pertains to fielding the best product.

Last season the Jets had trouble on the offensive line, particularly protecting the quarterback … it was not addressed in the offseason. A season ago we watched as Mark Sanchez had no depth at receiver and very few dynamic playmakers to get the football to… surprise-surprise the Jets have the same issues now; another area in which Tannenbaum failed to improve this team (Yes he drafted Stephen Hill but Hill is unproven and it shows, he came from a run heavy college offense). And for the love of G-D, why wouldn’t Tannenbaum have drafted or signed a running back. For a team that was looking to run the ball, ground and pound, and wear out defenses, they certainly have failed to improve their personnel at running back. Shonne Greene has not proven to me that he is an every down back that can produce consistently. He can play! He’s just a complimentary running back. He doesn’t have the home run hitting capabilities that most, if not all, running backs across this league have.

Rex Ryan said before this season that this is the best team he has had. Really Rex? This is by far the worst offense the Jets have fielded since Ryan became head coach. The offense bleeds mediocrity and is causing the defense to look bad as well. The defense can only do so much… they keep the Jets in games and at times have had to do the scoring themselves. Great the Jets have a good defense! The acquisitions of Yeremiah Bell and LaRon Landry are paying dividends, only one problem… The defense wasn’t the side of the ball that needed the improvement!!

The entire Jets nation knew that improvements on offense were much needed a year ago yet as general manager Tannenbaum didn’t think it was necessary to make them? If this season continues as it has gone thus far, the jets organization should question whether Tannenbaum should continue to make decisions for the Jets team.

Side Notes: With all that has taken place in a month of football and as bad as the offense has looked the team is still 2-2 and tied atop the AFC East. Changes must be made! The Jets have many needs that will have to be addressed quickly if they are going to be any sort of relevant. Next week the Jets play Houston (who might be better then the 49ers) on Monday night. It’s a primetime, nationally televised game that will be watched by many. I’m not predicting a Jets win in this game but I am not ready to right them off, if they can make the much needed changes and be competitive Monday. However, if they come out and play remotely close to the mediocrity we witnessed Sunday, all hope in my eyes will and should be thrown by the way side.

Last week, the importance of a win against a lesser opponent (Miami Dolphins) was paramount. Although the game was not won in stylish fashion, the Jets were able to walk into a hostile Sunlife Stadium and pull out an important win. This week the Jets face a much more talented and physical team, in the San Francisco 49ers. The gap in talent from last week to this week has certainly widened, the Jets must prove that they can play with the best teams in the league and will get their chance to do so today.

In the first two weeks of the season the San Francisco 49ers looked like the class of the NFL. The 49ers dismantled their first two opponents and were atop the NFL power rankings. Last week the 49ers hit a bump in the road, losing a poorly played game to the Minnesota Vikings. The 49ers, who I believe to be one of, if not, the best coached team in the league, will surely be looking to get back on the right track with a win today.

The Vikings laid out a blueprint to the league about how to beat the once almighty 49ers. The Jets can certainly win this game but must play better than we saw last week. The run game will have to show up for the Jets and Mark Sanchez will have to be on his "A" game in this contest. The 49ers field one of the best defenses in the league and without question the most physical. The Jets can not afford to turn the ball over; our young receivers must step up big and hold on to accurately thrown passes.

Till this point running back Shonne Green has not played particularly well. Whether it’s been an offensive line issue or a running back issue, this week the run game must produce. The 49ers are a run heavy team that looks to control the clock with their own ground and pound style led by running back Frank Gore. The Jets run game will need to be efficient and control some of that clock. First down conversions will be an essential key to success, as they usually are in this league. Mark Sanchez must take care of the football and the offense must limit turnovers as a whole.

The Jets defense, which has played well thus far, will take the field for the first time, in a long time, without All Pro cornerback Darrelle Revis. Former first round draft pick Kyle Wilson will step in for Revis and look to prove he was worth the pick. The Jets will rely on him to shut down some of the talented receivers that the 49ers acquired this offseason (Randy Moss, Mario Manningham).

The key for the defense will be to slow down the 49ers run game. Alex Smith has become a capable quarterback under head coach Jim Harbaugh but he has not proven himself to be a quarterback that can carry a team. If the Jets defense can shut down the San Francisco the run game and put the game solely on the arm of Alex Smith, it certainly would put the 49ers in unfamiliar territory.

A Win is certainly a Win but… Boy how ugly the Jets looked in their win Sunday against the Dolphins. The New York Jets sneaked out a win in Miami Sunday that they surely shouldn’t have. Miami place kicker Dan Carpenter missed a game winning FG in overtime that gave the Jets new life, and ultimately a 23-20 overtime victory. The Jets improved to 2-1 on the season with the win Sunday and are now undefeated in the AFC east. However, in the process of the win, the Jets lost All Pro cornerback Darelle Revis (torn ACL) for the season, and displayed proficient evidence as to how inexperienced and inept the offense is.

Now! It can and will be noted by many that this is how the Jets win games. Under the Rex Ryan regime, this is how we have come to know the Jets for their victories. They grind out games and find a way to squeak it out in the end. But against a young, inferior Dolphins team, who lost star running back Reggie Bush (who was having a great game before he went down) early in the game, the Jets certainly did not look like anything that resembled a playoff team, let alone a Superbowl contender.

In the first half of Sunday’s game the Jets failed to produce a touchdown. A Tim Tebow fake punt, which led to a Jets first down, allowed the Jets to continue their drive and kick a FG to put their first points on the board. Quarterback Mark Sanchez played well in spots but certainly had his share of miscues and struggles. Sanchez finished the game 21-46 for 306 yards, 1 touchdown and 2 interceptions. He and receiver Santonio Holmes looked to be on the same page as they hooked up nine times for 147 yards. Several of Sanchez’s passes were dropped by his young receivers, most notably a dropped pass in the end zone by rookie Stephen Hill. Sanchez got little help Sunday from his run game. The Jets rushed for 95 yards between running backs Powell and Greene but never established a consistent ground game.

My Notes: It is hard to imagine a teams being as criticized as the Jets have been, after winning a game. But what many people see, including myself, is a team that has not been assembled properly. Mark Sanchez is by no means an Elite quarterback but he is a capable one. He has been given no weapons and the lack of experience at receiver is not helping his cause. The run game, on a team that was supposed to have a GROUND AND POUND philosophy, has been non existent. Shonne Green is not a top running back in the NFL and he lacks big play ability. The offensive line, which had it share of issues last year, was neglected this offseason and has not been able to open up holes in the run game to alleviate some pressure from Sanchez.

All that said…. The Jets are 2-1 and 2-0 in the AFC east heading into a tough four game stint. It is hard to believe that there will be any substantial improvement due to a lack of personnel, but as we learned last night with a dreadful TD call on Monday night football, anything is possible in the NFL!!

As big as last weeks game was for the Jets to prove their worth, a week three match up against division rival Miami Dolphins has much bigger playoff implications. The Jets can ill afford a loss in week three to a young Dolphins team. With the 49ers (who sit atop the NFL power rankings) and league defensive leading Houston Texans ahead on the schedule, the Jets must win the easier games if they hope to have a legitimate chance of making the playoffs.

Miami Dolphins: The Miami Dolphins are a young team and looked like it in week one. They were beat handily by a legit Super Bowl contender in the Houston Texans. Miami was able to bounce back in week two and get a win, albeit against a miserable Oakland Raiders team. Reggie Bush showed that he has big play ability. The Jets will have to game plan for Bush as he is one of a few weapons the Dolphins offense has. Rookie Quarterback Ryan Tannehill is raw but is capable of making big throws. The Jets will certainly look confuse the rookie by sending pressure early and shutting down the run game.

Miami’s defense has been night and day in their first two games. A poor performance against Houston was followed by a great defensive game, again, against the Raiders. Currently, with two NFL weeks passed the Dolphins rank 18th in the league in total defense. They rank an astonishing 4th against the run but have been far less proficient against the pass ranking 30th overall.

New York Jets: The Jets should look to take advantage of a horrid Miami pass defense. The Jets had their own night and day passing performances the past two weeks and should aim to get Mark Sanchez back on track with his receivers. In the final three quarters of last week’s game against Pittsburgh, the Jets receivers were non existent. Against a weaker Miami secondary, young wide out’s Jeremy Kerley and Stephen Hill should have more success.

And Dare I say Unleash Tim Tebow!!! Till this point the Jets have not given any indication that trading for Tebow was a good acquisition. I have stated before and I will stick to my gut feeling that Tebow will have to play a roll for the Jets, in some way this season, if they are going to be successful. I said last week that I thought he would have to be a big part of the Pittsburgh game if the Jets (he was not but should have been). Whether it is in the run game or the spread option, the Jets don’t have a strong enough offense to leave Tebow on the sidelines. With a weak Miami pass defense this could be a good week to test Tebow’s ability, not only as a runner, but throwing the football out of the spread option as well.

The Jets are a much better team then Miami but as we all know that seldom means anything in the NFL (Arizona vs. New England). The Jets must show up on Sunday and be the better team on the field. A loss to Miami certainly doesn’t kill chances of winning the division but it makes it drastically harder. Sunday’s game is vastly approaching!!

Week 2: Jets @ Steelers: Cause For Concern?

In yesterday’s 27-10 loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers, the New York Jets offense was summoned back to earth from their week one high. The Jets struggled offensively for most of the afternoon. They failed to convert on critical third downs and watched helplessly on the sidelines as the Pittsburgh offense chewed up valuable clock. The week two loss was certainly not what the Jets had in mind. They needed this game to send a big message to the league and their critics. But as many teams witnessed first hand yesterday (including them PATRIOTS), it’s a tough league to win in and everyone has their hiccups.

On their opening drive the Jets looked like they had not lost a beat from a week ago. Mark Sanchez orchestrated a beautiful eight play, nine minute drive that he capped with a touchdown pass to Santonio Holmes. Later in the half, with the Jets threatening to put another touchdown on the board, Sanchez missed a wide open Holmes in the end zone. The missed throw would prove to be costly as the Jets settled for a field goal and ultimately their last points of the game. For the remainder of the afternoon, the Jet got nothing going in the run game and the receivers could not get open as the Pittsburgh cornerbacks decided to play them tight at the line of scrimmage.

The Jets defense played well but struggled to get off the field as the Steelers went on drives of 15 minutes, 11 minutes and 14 minutes. They looked strong early but certainly missed having all-pro cornerback Darrelle Revis. His ability to take away half of the field was noticeably missed. Ben Roethlisberger did a great job spreading the ball around, completing 24 passes to 10 different receivers. He made plays that we have grown accustom to seeing him make, eluding rushers and extending plays. Several times the Jets had Big Ben trapped in the backfield only to see him escape and convert on another third down.

The Jets played poorly and they will need to improve offensively but there should not be panic in Jets land. The Pittsburgh Steelers have been the toughest team in the league to beat at home in recent memory. They were coming off a tough loss and the Jets caught them on a tough weekend. Next up for the Jets are the Miami Dolphins (1-1). This is a game that the Jets must have. With tough games against Houston and San Francisco ahead, the Jets must win against the less formidable opponents.

A week two loss is NOT a cause for concern. Some of the better teams in the league (Ravens, Patriots, Packers) have losses attached to their records also. With Miami next on the schedule, the Jets have a good chance of heading into a rough two game stint with a winning record. The Jets cannot afford a mental lapse against Miami, who is coming off a week two win against Oakland. They must keep themselves in striking distance within the division. Miami has explosive weapons and a talented rookie quarterback so the Jets cannot take this game lightly.

Side Notes: On a third down play, with the Jets driving, Sanchez threw an incompletion to Santonio Holmes that was clearly miscommunication by the two. Holmes threw his hands up in frustration and was clearly dismissive of Sanchez after the play. This type of reaction from Holmes does nothing good for the Jets offense and more particular Mark Sanchez. Sanchez is a quarterback that plays on emotion. When things are going well he plays with confidence. When things aren’t going so great and teammates are being unsportsmanlike, as Holmes was, Sanchez tends to start making mistakes and playing with a cautiousness that hinders him. The Jets can ill afford another locker room dispute. If you ask me Santonio needs to start acting like a professional and like a teammate. Have your quarterback’s back and stop acting like the second coming of Terrell Owens. That’s the last thing this offense needs Santonio!

Last week the New York Jets put a big apple sized beating on what was suppose to be a much improved Buffalo Bills team. This week the Jets head to Heinz field to take on a more talented Pittsburgh Steelers team, looking to avenge their week one loss to the Denver Broncos. A great offensive performance, and week 1 victory bestowed upon Jets fans, is certain to become a distant memory if the Jets revert back to preseason mediocrity.

In their loss Sunday to Denver, the Pittsburgh defense was without starters James Harrison and Ryan Clark. Harrison remains questionable for Sunday’s game against the Jets but has stated to the media that he will play, look for Clark to come out strong in his season debut. The Pittsburgh secondary won’t be mistaken for that of the Buffalo Bills, and will test young receivers Stephen Hill and Jeremy Kerely. Sanchez and the Jets receivers will have to be on their game if they hope to reenact their performance from a week ago.

Even as an improved defense, the Bills are inferior to a Steelers defense that finished last season number 1 in the NFL. The Steelers play a physical style of defense and will send more pressure then Buffalo, with their pass rush and blitz packages. In week 1 the Bills couldn’t sniff Sanchez’s Jersey and much to the surprise of many, did not Blitz. Sunday at Heinz Field, Sanchez will need to be protected as he was last week but look for him to get a bit dirty.

The offensive line will have to play well Sunday if the Jets will have a chance of coming out victorious. The running game will have to be efficient to ensure clock control. Third down conversions will be essential to keeping possession and ensuring Big Ben and the explosive Pittsburgh receivers remain sidelined. Against the Broncos last week, the Steelers dominated time of possession. They controlled the ball for 10+ minutes longer than the Broncos; unfortunately for the Steelers the Broncos have a guy named of Peyton Manning that off set that lack of possession time.

Mark Sanchez showed confidence and control in week 1 but he certainly is not being put in the class of Peyton Manning. For the Jets to be successful Sunday they cannot give up 10 minutes in time of possession. The defense cannot afford to let the Steelers go on 10-14 play drives and eat up valuable clock. Sanchez will have to take care of the football and limit turnovers. Added possessions due to turnovers will handicap the Jets and make it tough to get a win.

The defense will play a much bigger role for the Jets this week. Sunday’s game looks to be a defensive battle and low scoring. The Jets defense will have to get stops on third down and keep Ben Roethlisberger from escaping the pocket to extend plays. The most important roll for the defense in week 2 is to force turnovers. As good as both defenses are, this game will be won on turnovers. The team that wins the turnover battle will have the best chance to come out victorious.

A win by the Jets Sunday will assuredly diminish the preseason and off season ridicule they have been subjected to. The Steelers are a formidable opponent that will give us better insight into where the Jets stack up in the AFC. In the next six weeks the Jets face four teams that are legitimate Super Bowl contenders (Pittsburgh, Houston, San Francisco, New England). Rex Ryan and the Jets have one goal in mind for this season… Get to and Win a Super Bowl championship. Beginning Sunday, the Jets will begin a six game stint where they will show if their goal is Reality or Wishful Thinking.

Heading into yesterdays 1pm matchup against, what everyone thought was a revamped and greatly improved Bills team, there were many questions surrounding the New York Jets, particularly the offense and quarterback Mark Sanchez. In a 48-28 shellacking of the Bills yesterday at MetLife Stadium, Sanchez and the Jets offense silenced the questions and critics for at least the next week.

Mark Sanchez played what I felt was his greatest game as a starter for the New York Jets. He threw the ball with confidence, made critical checks at the line of scrimmage and more importantly bounced back from a horrible interception on the Jets first possession. Sanchez finished the day going 19-26 for 266 yards with three touchdown passes. Sanchez looked poised and in control of the game for the majority of the contest. He resembled the quarterback Jets fans have been waiting for him to become.

The defense, which was expected to play a huge roll for the Jets this season, was dominant. An early interception by Darrelle Revis set up a Sanchez touchdown pass to wide out Jeremy Kerely to put the Jets ahead 7-0. Later in the quarter another interception by Kyle Wilson lead to a second touchdown pass from Sanchez, this time to Rookie receiver Stephen Hill. Early in the second half cornerback Antonio Cromartie picked off Ryan Fitzpatrick and returned it for a touchdown to put the Jets up 34-7, which seemingly put the game out of reach and gave the Jets their 1-0 start to the season. The Bills did manage rack up some yardage and points in garbage time. The defense came up big in week 1 and should be expected to play at this level each week.

Sanchez played great; some unknowns stepped up, the defense dominated as expected. The only thing missing from the week 1 victory was a highlight from Tim Tebow. On five carries (out of the wildcat) he only managed to produce 11 yards rushing and no pass attempts but I guess his production, or lack there off, wasn’t a bad thing for the Jets in week 1 (Hint-Hint).

Nothing should be taken away from the Jets week 1 victory. They played a great game and this performance is definitely something to build on. However, the true test for the Jets comes Sunday against a seasoned Pittsburgh Steelers team coming off a week 1 loss to Peyton Manning and the Denver Broncos. The Steelers will look to avoid their first 0-2 start since 2002 and will give the Jets their best effort.

The defense will need to play well again and don’t bet on the Jets putting up 48 points next week. Sanchez will need to duplicate his week 1 performance as will the Jets wide receivers. And some might think I’m crazy to go out on this limb but I see Tebow having a bigger role against Pittsburgh if the Jets are going to prevail in that one. We Shall See Folks!

Can An Elite Defense Carry A Team In The Modern Game?

Back in 2000 the Baltimore Ravens captured a world championship by playing Elite defense Led by Ray Lexis. Some might even argue that the 2000 Ravens had the best defense of all time (argument for a different day). Brian Billick’s formula for victory worked perfectly for the Ravens back in 2000. Eleven years later, as offensive systems have evolved and become more fluid and dynamic, we ask… Is it possible for an NFL team to realistically contend for a championship by playing lights out defense? Can An Elite Defense carry a team as todays NFL becomes more offense friendly league?

This season the New York Jets will give us week to week insight on whether or not a team can be carried by an Elite defense. Heading into this season the Jets defense will be their strength. The Jets defense will be relied upon heavily to stop opposing offenses and keep the score manageable. The offense has struggled this preseason but the defense has looked very sharp. Veteran linebacker Bart Scott went as far as saying he thinks this years’ Jets defense might be the best in franchise history.

In 2011 Dan Marino’s 27 year old single season passing record was broken by Drew Brees, who now holds the record with 5,476 passing yards. Marino’s record was also surpassed in 2011 by some guy named Tom Brady. Brady threw for a career high and NFL second best 5,235 yards.

Last season we watched as the offensive side of the football in the NFL evolved. Teams were spreading out their offenses and using packages where more receivers were involved. The tight end position was heavily emphasized in 2011. Jimmy Graham and Rob Gronkowski set a new bar for tight end production. Look for other teams across the league to try and mimic that production at the tight end position in 2012.

Witnessing quarterbacks such as Brees, Brady, Rodgers rack up yards and points last season, makes it difficult to fathom the idea of a defensively lead team contending for a championship. Playing stout defense can only carry a team so far in today’s game. Against Elite teams your offense must be able to score points. The Brady’s and Brees’ of the world are going to find ways to score touchdowns no matter what defenses are lined up in front of them.

Playing great defense these days is a great formula for victory if you have an efficient offense to go along. Poor offensive play means more possessions for the opposition and more chances for them score. With a great defense you can have a less formidable offense but it is still imperative that the offense be capable of keeping up on the scoreboard.

With the new rule changes in the NFL, the broken passing records and quarterbacks playing at an all time high level (rookies and second year guys included)-- I think the time has come and gone where we’ll see Elite defensive teams winning Superbowl titles. 11 seasons have come and gone since a true defensive team captured a Superbowl title and it is my feeling that this trend will continue.

The New York Jets will be the catalyst in 2012 for a defensively lead style of play. If any defense were going to prove the doubters wrong the Jets defense is more than capable. They have a tough mountain to claim and it doesn’t help that they have to see that guy Brady twice a season. We shall see how the Jets fare and whether or not defensive strength and success is a reality in a new NFL.

What Tebow Scheme Could Mean For Jets

With three poor offensive performances behind us and still no touchdowns in the preseason, what can the Jets hang their hats on as we get closer to the regular season? Seldom have I agreed with the decisions head coach Rex Ryan has made regarding the offense. However, his choice to essentially hide Tim Tebow this preseason could prove to be one of his best moves yet.

We all know that by NFL quarterback standards Tim Tebow doesn’t measure up. As ESPN’s Stephen A. Smith would put it, "The Boy Can’t Throw!" But what we do know about Tebow might prove to be extremely beneficial to a lackluster Jets offense. Tim Tebow can play in this league. He might not be a good quarterback but he is certainly a dynamic football player. He has proven that he can win games in this league and in the right system he is a headache for opposing defenses.

Last season we saw Tim Tebow have success running a spread option style offense in Denver. His ability to pull the ball and run with the physicality of a running back gives the Jets a wrinkle in their offense that opponents will have to game plan for. By no means is Tebow a pure passer but out of the spread option system he is certainly a threat to beat you with a throw down field if a cornerback/linebacker gets fooled by a run fake. If Mark Sanchez and the Jets regular offense can move the ball with semi efficiency (which we saw them do against Carolina) and get to the redzone or plus ten several times a game, the spread option system could help the Jets put points on the board that we haven’t seen this preseason.

Many people are quick to point out the inabilities that hinder Tim Tebow but what they fail to look at are the attributes that made him successful a year ago. The Denver broncos became the leagues leading rushing team in part because of the dynamic Tim Tebow brings in a spread option system. The offseason we have heard so much talk about has been the "Wildcat." Tebow will not be running the wildcat for the Jets. The offense the Jets have planned (should have planned) for Tebow is the spread option, an offense that plays to his abilities as a football player.

No one truly knows how this system will work for the Jets. By no stretch of the imagination am I saying this is the answer. The struggles on the offensive side of the football might very well continue and the dynamic that a Tim Tebow spread option system brings could fail miserably. With that said, all that can be stated is that this dynamic is a secret to all at the moment and it gives the Jets an offensive advantage that they have not had this preseason. Teams will be unaware of how the Jets will use this offense. If this plan for Tebow has the Jets with a record of 6-2 after eight weeks we will be applauding Rex Ryan. If this system fails, expect to see a continued struggle to score.

Scheme Or Ability? Is Sanchez Really Our Franchise QB?

In his first two seasons as the New York Jets starting quarterback, Mark Sanchez helped the Jets reach the AFC title game. Many believed he was the quarterback of the future but with a poor 2011 season, those same believers have become Sanchez’s toughest critics. The quarterback position is without question the most important position on a football team. Sanchez will have to play well this season to keep Jets fans from completely turning on him. Can Mark Sanchez be the franchise quarterback that the Jets drafted him to be or will he falter and ultimately be replaced.

There are necessary points to be noted about the career of Mark Sanchez. Since his rookie season Sanchez has improved in every passing category, threw for career high 26 touchdowns and has been to the playoffs in two of his first three seasons. Having only had one true college season as a starter, Sanchez entered the NFL as a raw talent. We have seen Sanchez compete a high level and win games, this season we must see him do it consistently. A big point to be noted about Sanchez, particularly this off-season, is his ability to handle criticism/negativity with the poise and composure of a true professional.

In years one and two not much was asked of Sanchez by the Jets coaching staff. Sanchez’s roll was simple… Manage the offense, keep possession (no turnovers) and let the defense win games. The scheme was successful and so were Jets. In Sanchez’s third season, former offensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer opened up the playbook for Sanchez and leaned on him to do more. Schottenheimer seemed to be preparing Sanchez for a new league that has become pass friendly. Many Jets critics believed that the play calling and direction that Schottenheimer wanted to go in was a big reason for the Jets struggles. Whether or not the new direction was the reason the Jets struggled and Schotty was ultimately let go, remains speculation.

Sanchez struggled last season to score necessary points when the Jets were in need. He had a completion percentage of 56.7 which ranked among the worst in the league. With the defense taking a step back from two tremendous seasons in 2009 and 2010, (still a great 2011 campaign) the Jets needed Sanchez to step up and put points on the board in spots. He failed to do so. In five of the Jets losses a season ago, the offense failed to score more than 17 points.

Total blame should not fall completely on the shoulders of Sanchez and/or Schottenheimer. The Jets offensive line had a poor 2011 campaign. They struggled to protect Sanchez, had him running for cover and taking brutal hits from opposing defenses. Schottenheimer and head coach Rex Ryan failed to communicate as to what they wanted to do offensively. Schottenheimer’s emphasis was on throwing the ball down field while Ryan wanted to keep a ground and pound mentality. The lack of communication between the two was certainly a cause of struggles.

This year will be the first time in Sanchez’s career where he will see legitimate competition for his starting position. This off-season the Jets acquired Tim Tebow to be their back-up quarterback. A season ago the NFL was amazed by Tebow’s success, leading the Denver Broncos to a playoff victory. If Sanchez struggles, look for the Jets faithful to put pressure on the organization and coaching staff to give Tebow a shot as the starter.

The media, teammates and fans have questioned Sanchez’s leadership and toughness. Thus far, this offseason, things have not looked good for Sanchez. He and the Jets offense have failed to score a touchdown in three preseason games, the offensive line has continued to struggle and it seems that Jets fan as becoming increasingly impatient.

Personally I can’t make a decision on Sanchez quite yet. This fourth season will tell all about Sanchez and his future with the Jets. With rookie and second year quarterbacks playing at an extremely high level, this season is do or die for Sanchez. If he struggles like he did a season ago, I see the Jets moving forward without him. Eli Manning won a Superbowl title in his fourth season with the Giants, look for Sanchez to try and emulate Eli’s 2007 campaign.

There comes a point in time when a quarterback takes the next step in his career. He shows total command and knowledge of the offense. He has confidence in his throws and makes everyone around him better. The top quarterbacks all posses these abilities. In 2012 Sanchez must take that next step. It is time for him to show up and prove to his teammates, the media, fans but most importantly HIMSELF, that he has what it takes to be GREAT!

Jets Opponents: AFC East Roster Developments

With two weeks of the NFL preseason in the books, teams across the league will look to develop their rosters and sure up position necessities. Cuts will certainly be made and each team will get closer to their season opening 53 man rosters. In a tough AFC East, each team has, and will continue to strategically maneuver its personnel. As we dive deeper into the AFC East, let’s begin to assess the strategies that have been implemented and how these moves will affect the outcome of this competitive division.

New England Patriots: Finished 1st in AFC East in 2011

The perennial power house Patriots were a win shy of a fourth superbowl championship in 2011. Under the Belichick/Brady era the team has one of the best win percentages in football. With all the success last season the Patriots defense proved to be their fatal flaw, a flaw that was heavily addressed this offseason.

In 2011 the patriots finished second to last in the NFL in total defense. A young and inexperienced secondary finished 31st against the pass and the defense finished 17th overall against the run. Six of the seven patriots draft picks were spent on defensive players. Top two picks, Chandler Jones and Dont’a Hightower will be expected to contribute quickly. Newly acquired veterans Will Allen (Miami) and Steve Gregory (San Diego) will bring experience to the patriot’s defensive back field.

Offensively the Patriots have added wide receiver Brandon Lloyd (St. Louis). Lloyd will provide deep threat ability for Tom Brady and the Patriots offense. Jabar Gaffney, Donte’ Stallworth and Jake Ballard were other offseason acquisitions that will contribute.

Through 2 preseason games the patriots look like most teams do in the preseason, first team is solid and the rest, really doesn’t matter. In 2012 expect the Pats defense to improve drastically and the offense to pick up where it left off in 2011… with some new toys for Brady to utilize.

New York Jets: Finished 2nd in AFC East 2011

There is no question what the biggest roster move in the league was this past offseason. Tim Tebow!! The Jets will look to use Tebow in their ground and pound philosophy. In 2 preseason games the Jets have not revealed the Wild cat offense that Tebow will run come the regular season. The Jets have struggled to move the ball and have high hopes that the wild cat will improve their run game.

The play of Right tackle Wayne Hunter has become a huge cause for concern. In the Jets preseason game against the New York Giants, Hunter gave up 2.5 sacks in limited action. Coming into this season Hunter was a question mark because of his mediocre play last season. If these two preseason games are any indication of what is to come, Mark Sanchez and the Jets are in for a long and painful season.

There have been talks of bringing in a new tackle to replace Hunter or giving third year tackle Austin Howard a shot at the spot. Since there doesn’t seem to be any seasoned tackles on the market just yet, the Jets will look to improve the position from within and/or hope that Hunter can get his act together

Miami Dolphins: Finished 3rd in AFC East in 2011

The Miami Dolphins have been searching for a franchise quarterback since Dan Marino and with the 8th overall pick in this years draft, the Dolphins chose Ryan Tannehill out of Texas A&M.

The rookie quarterback was a hold out at the beginning of camp and was listed 3rd on the depth chart behind veterans David Gerrard and Matt Moore. After two impressive preseason performances, the Dolphins have decided to pull the trigger and name Tannehill their week one starter.

Acquiring Chad Johnson looked to be a huge transaction for the Dolphins but as quick as Chad arrived in Miami, he was gone that much faster. Johnson and new head coach Joe Philbin struggled to get on the same page and after an alleged domestic violence dispute, Philbin decided to move on without the 6-time pro bowl receiver.

Not much is expected of the Dolphins in 2012. They are talented but young. If Tannehill can have a breakout season and perform up to the standard that he is capable of, the Dolphins will have plenty to build on as they move forward.

Buffalo Bills: Finished 4th (Last) in the AFC East

This offseason the Buffalo Bills went out and addressed their 26th ranked defense. The Bills signed former #1 overall pick Mario Williams. The acquisition gives the bills much needed help on the defensive line.

The defense finished last season tied for second in interceptions but besides that ranked in the bottom of almost all other defensive categories. Stopping the run was a problem last season. The signing of former patriot defensive end Mark Anderson, who will play on the other side of Williams, will surely improve Buffalo’s pass rush and run defense.

The secondary was a positive for the Bills last season recording 20 interceptions which was tied for second in the league. The Bills added the second best corner in the draft by picking up Stephon Gilmore. Gilmore will help the secondary that was 19th ranked against the pass.

This season the Bills can take the next step to becoming a contender or continue to be a middle of the road team. The talent is there and the big name has been signed. We shall see how the Bills stack up in the AFC East as they face the New York Jets in week one.
