Not sure if this was mentioned in the Trade thread (it was too long to read, and if this has already been discussed, please disregard my post) but my theory is that Gregg will be part of the Peavy deal. Last night ESPN said that the Cubs are pursuing a third team to complete the trade with the Padres. With Hoffman gone, and no real obvious choice for the new Padres closer, Gregg fits this bill. Not that we would ever give up Marmol, but if thats what it took to get Peavy, it is not completely out of the question, therefore, Gregg is our new setup man...that is purely speculation and nothing I would ever hope for.

In an ESPN the magazine interview a couple months back, DeRo says that of all people on the Cubs, Wood would be the last to leave the Cubs. I have to agree with this, of all people in MLB, Wood would be the most likely to take the 'hometown' discount.

I ask myself why trade for a replacement for Wood when we already have one in Marmol. If Gregg is to be our setup guy, feel that we could fill that role with someone we already have...this trade just doesnt make sense to me at all, unless a trade with the Padres imminent.

God I hope I'm right
