Cam carries on the recent string of charity...

1

I know many will write off such acts as either: A) Self-serving PR B) Too little relative to what he has, or... C) A forced move However, it sounds like Cam has been actively getting involved with the community and is doing so out of desire, not necessity. Knowing that life does not start and end on the field may do wonders for him, but if even if it doesn't help out on the field I feel good about a charitable atmosphere being constructed in the locker room (Smitty's donation to Aurora and his poverty awareness stuff, D-Will being the driving force behind the breast cancer awareness movement in the NFL, JR's Christmas gift last year, etc..). To the haters who write this off as "just a drop in the bucket", I only say this: What dafuq have you done lately that is so great??

Eric Berry is the Chiefs worst defender?

+

It's a little bit off topic, little bit future rosterbation mixed into one headline, but who else here would gladly trade a 3rd rounder or so for Berry to come ply his trade in Charlotte? I would love nothing more than for him to go out of favor in KC, only for Carolina to swoop in and witness a return to form for one of the most talented safeties in the league *end dream*

An open discussion on what's wrong, and how do we fix it?

I don't post often (or ever, really...what's the point when the writers here are pumping out good material left, right and center?), but I feel like a little non-OT (ie no drunk language...we got...

The Cox bandwagon grows (giggity)....

11

I have no clue what Baldinger's track record is like with mocks, but this seems to be in line with Cox's late push as a potential top-10 prospect among the draftniks. Me personally, I've been pounding the DT drum for too long (at times, irrationally), and the guy does pass the eye test for the most part, so count me on board (I'm also still very intrigued by Brockers...he's reportedly been training with Kyle Williams, a pretty damn good DT himself, for awhile now and has continued training since the Nat'l championship so I'm feeling confident with the right coaches he really could achieve his sky-high potential).

Schaub out for the season?? Houston just became a much more winnable game...

8

I didn't even realize he was injured yesterday (I was more delighted by the fact that, even on our worst day, we didn't play as poorly as the Bucs did), but apparently Schaub is done for the season. Although Arian Foster still scares the crap out of me, Matt Leinart scares me far less than any QB we've played this season, and I'm including any and all rookies we have/will play!

Could Cotchery be worth looking at if he's released/healthy?

6

I've always liked Cotchery a lot as a #2 option, and if it's true that the Panthers are looking for an additional vet option, why not? It seems like he'd be fairly inexpensive, and I have faith that if they were to sign him it'd be because they think he's recovered from his back surgery...

Shockey is apparently staying in great shape...

4

Well, at least we know he'll never get winded during a game!

Amidst the furor of the pre and post draft process, I found myself looking back on my first Post on CSR entitled "A return to delusional optimism"...

So, as many of you may know, I'm a bit all over the place when it comes to opinions regarding the Panthers. Often, I live up to my screen name, routinely sugarcoating issues with the team/over...

Apparently, talks are going well....could we be seeing a deal sooner rather than later?

1

OK, so both sides are actually sticking to their order of silence this time around...but based on Eller's comments to the press, it sounds like the progress made at the FMCS is being continued...

Talks to resume on Thursday in Minneapolis, under mediation from someone Nelson picked...

+

Welp, looks like we're back to the negotiation table; I would've preferred to see Cohen chosen as the mediator (his knowledge of the issues facing an agreement, along with his familiarity with both sides and progress made while mediator seems preferable). However, we'll take what we can get at this point...

For anyone who wants to join me in not overreacting to every last word that comes out of an analysts mouth, click here!

5

No, it's not a direct parallel...but it's still an interesting read (and a good lesson on why intangibles matter, and I don't just mean for QB's)!

Could we be headed to a second round of CBA negotiations?

3

OK, so nothing definitive here, but considering the amount of contact the two sides have had since the 4/6 court hearing, it doesn't seem unlikely that they will agree to resume talks....

Former players getting a little pissed at the NFLPA?

2

Seems many of the players who were part of the 1980's strikes (in this case, Jeff Nixon, whose been a vocal opponent of Smith for awhile now) aren't terribly pleased with the NFLPA leadership....

Are we looking at drafting Kasay's replacement?

8

Not to read too much into who we bring in for workouts, but it's intriguing that we're one of only two teams so far to workout Forbath, not too mention I don't remember the last time we brought in a kicker prospect for an individual workout. If I'm Rhys Lloyd, I'm hating this news right now...

If it wasn't for bad luck, he'd have no luck at all!

4

I know he's never been a Panther, but I've always thought Pennington was one of the most underrated QB's in the league (with the shittiest luck of any player in the league). I just can't imagine how much he could've accomplished if he wasn't "born under a bad sign" (as it stands, he managed to accomplish a decent amount given the amount of time he's spent on the IR lol)!

With the NFL experiencing labor strife, somehow Pat Y has become a decent writer?

+

Old Patty Y has been coming through for us (as a fanbase) in recent weeks, which is kind of astonishing (for all of us who have suffered through his blog posts on ESPN in recent times). This article reminded me of why our owner kicks ass, and why I can't imagine sporting another NFL team's colors ever again (like the pre-1995 days)...

To vote for a panthers player, or to not vote for a panthers player? That, is the Madden cover question...

10

Should we all vote for matt ryan, in the hopes that he succumbs to the Madden curse and experiences epic fail next season? Or do we vote for our own Jordan Gross (why EA felt that was the best player to use as our representative, I'll never know), in the distant hopes of gaining SOME positive recognition?

Welllll, would you look at that....long term planning DOES work!

6

Not only will we be set up as far as salary cap figures go, but we might be one of the few teams that's fully staffed from the inside out when all this madness is done lol btw...the CO comments section is only helping further the argument that there is a distinct need for a "ruling class" :p

Our Boisterous owner Jerry Richardson is spouting...patience and calm?

5

It seems that our "hot head" of an owner is actually one of the calmer voices amongst all the hub-bub....it's comforting to know we have a team that is owned by someone with some sense of foresight (if only we could be so lucky with congressional officials...ba dum tishhh)!

Something big is in store for friday...or is it?

4

I know I know...I've been bombarding the fanshots with a smorgasbord of fairly minor labor updates, but this one seems to indicate that, once again....we're in store for a major 11th hour update. Biggest thing that caught my eye was FA would continue as it normally does if the NFLPA wins an injunction (of 5 days I guess is the rumor?) against the owners commencing a lockout as soon as the CBA expires/NFLPA decertifies. This would mean, in theory, that there would be brief window of opportunity to resign/sign players for teams...

I know AJ Green is pretty much out of the running for #1, but this article was a little disconcerting...

3

No, I'm not going to accuse AJ of being one of the "cancerous" influences that Robinson talks about (in fact, he seems like a good kid)...but it really makes you wonder about some of the other UGA prospects that are in the draft right now (and, who knows? AJ could very well have been part of it).

Was browsing around (this labor stuff has me fascinated), and I came across this little piece...

4

OK, so I know this manual is from 1985 so there is some good examples of labor negotiations that it missed out on; however, it's really kinda interesting to read through it and match up each side to the various set-ups and negotiation strategies that are listed out in this army guide (why the army felt the need to make this publication? No clue lol).

NFL proposes to reveal financial info that Smith requested in October...and the NFLPA declines???!!!

4

I'm not sure what to make of it so far, but methinks the NFLPA is starting to stumble a bit, and here's my rationale: For months, Smith has been banging the "financial transparency" drum in an attempt to not only get an opportunity to look at (and analyze/scrutinize club info), but win over popular support for the NFLPA as well (make them look like the "good guys" in the situation). But I don't think he actually expected them to ever offer any info, and it's looking like the league is trying to catch him off guard. What happens next will be interesting, because the NFL's case against decertification might get bolstered if the NFLPA snubs its nose at the very info that it has been requesting.....

The NFL finally fires back amidst the renewed call for "fiscal transparency"

+

At this point, I'm exasperated by a lot of the rhetoric (as I'm sure everyone else is), but this is the one aspect of the negotiations that I've always found to be more of a "publicity stunt" than anything....Don't be surprised if the NFLPA starts backing down off the rhetoric a bit once this info is reviewed by the third party investment bank (financial advisors essentially)...

Pat Y...writes a good article? Hath mine eyes been bewitched by songs of Xanadu???

8

For the first time in who knows how long, Pat Y has written an article that I thoroughly appreciated (my sentiments about him as a writer seem to be shared by many in this vast community). Who wants to bet the caller he's referring to is a NY fan? I mention NY because, quite frankly, if you listen to The Fan at all you'd get the impression that their entire fan base is made up of people like the one he mentions in this article....

Post combine impressions (that I heard from a friend, who heard from a friend...)

2

I typically am a little leery of Bunting's impressions, because a lot of times his sources seem to be in a clear minority when it concerns some prospects; Having said that though, gotta assume that there's some truth to his impressions (if he does, in fact, have access to such sources)

It's official: CBA deadline extended to March 11

4

Piggy backing off of earlier rumors, a repeat of what happened in 2006 is in motion. Granted, the sides seem further apart this time around, but talks are expected to pick up on monday.

Chris Mortensen says that federal Mediator has Union agreement on 7-10 day extension

3

It's all "source speak" right now, but apparently the union has already voiced their intention to agree to a 7-10 day extension (as requested by the league), so all that would need to happen is the owner's consenting to the extension and it would be made so....

You won't read this outside of the Observer, because god forbid JR be cast in a positive light....

5

But wait...isn't our team owned by montgomery burns? How could Yahoo! sports lie to me!!!!!
