Habs Eyes On The Prize They should have played Price tonight

Martin missed an opportunity tonight.  Here we have a goaltender that is in need of some confidence, and the Habs are playing one of the weakest teams in the league.  Why not give Price the start and let him get a win?  I'm not saying this because I have Price in my fantasy pool as one of my starting goaltenders, I'm saying this because I'm a Habs fan who wants to see a super star goalie emerge in Carey Price.  Carey needs better handlers... and I'm afraid he won't get them until he is wearing another team's jersey.

Habs Eyes On The Prize Free Agent Solutions

GM Tony Lobster is back and is willing to share his upcoming moves this summer.  Notice, I wrote "Solutions" in the title, because I have a couple of options, depending on player availability and price.  Bettman sent me the free agent list for my summer shopping (meaning I found it on the web) and I've come up with two options.  (keep in mind that the list may not be accurate, as I don't keep up with all the signings)

Before looking at my new depth charts, I'll summarize who I am not signing:

Kovalev, Lang, Kostopoulos, Bouillon, Dandenault(except in Opt#2), Komisarek, Schneider, Brisebois.

I will sign Koivu and Tanguay.

You can assume I will trade anyone who is not listed for draft picks and practice pucks.  Trading Laraque for pucks by weight equals something like 700 pucks.  A really good deal if you ask me.

Option #1 - Buy a #1 line consisting of the Sedins and Gionta, add Chris Neil to

L- Sedin, Tanguay, A. Kostitsyn, Higgins, Stuart

C- Sedin, Koivu, Plekanec, Lapierre, Metropolit

R-Gionta, Neil, Latendresse, D'Agostini, S. Kostitsyn

D-Markov, Gorges, Hamrlik, Oduya, Weber, O'Byrne

G-Price, Halak

Option #2 - Beef up the D - Boumeester, Beauchemin - and add Franzen, Gionta, Neil.

L-Tanguay, A. Kostitsyn, Higgins, S. Kostitsyn, Stuart

C-Franzen, Koivu, Plekanec, Lapierre, Metropolit

R-Gionta, Neil, Latendresse, D'Agostini, Dandenault

D-Markov, Boumeester, Beauchemin, Gorges, Hamrlik, O'Byrne, Weber

G-Price, Halak

I like both options, but i think I prefer #2 because we need help on defense.  Thinking about Carey here, but he is a franchise goalie with a bit more support.

I used a $56 Million salary cap for 2009-10.  Also, I am likely in La-la Land over what the FA would actually cost, but that's Bettman's fault.

Habs Eyes On The Prize Lines for Game #3

Gainey step aside, and let Tony Lobster take over the reins of this one-trick pony.  Before I coach this team, I need to get a few things off of my chest.

- First of all Gainey, I respect all that you've done for the organization, but that doesn't mean you are always right.  Removing Carbo was a misstep.  You've done no better then Carbo after all.  If your big solution was to unite the line of Tanguay, Koivu, and Kovalev, whoopty-doo!  Coaching 101 - you have one of two strategies, focus your scoring on one line or even it out over multiple lines.  That's hardly genius.  Once I take over your job I am reinstating him if he will come back and I'll give him a little coaching once in awhile when he needs it.

- The playoffs isn't the time to introduce inexperienced rookies.  Sometimes we have to do this, because injuries provide no other options, and sometimes that works out very well for us, but it shouldn't be your main strategy.  Reporter: "Mr Gainey, how are you going to beat the Bruins?"  Gainey: "I'm going to bring up as many inexperienced guys and put them in key roles, their youthful exuberance and exitement will be uncontainable.  Think Ken Dryden-like results."

- Putting Laraque into the #1 line was a joke.  First of all, I like George, and I am glad he is on our team.  I'll put him up against any tough-guy in the league.  That doesn't mean he gets on the first line.  He skates like an elephant.  Yeah, he hits like one too, I'll give him that, but he can't keep up with Kovalev and Koivu.  Did you forget how successful your top line was prior to the playoffs?

OK, I'm making some changes:

1- The top line will always be together: Tanguay - Koivu - Kovalev.  That's as good of a skilled line as any team's.

2- Plekanec and the Kostitsyn brothers are back, and they are going to work through their funk.  This team will live and die by its core players, and those three are core.  The Kostitsyn's are a poor man's Sedins, and like the Sedins will take a few years to develop.  They need to play, and play together.  Plekanec is the perfect compliment for them.  They might not get all the ice-time of a 2nd line, as I will use the 3rd line as much or more depending on performance, but they will be there and they will understand that we rely on them to perform.

3- Dandenault is playing point until further notice.  With Markov and Bouillon injured, we need experience back on the point.

4- It's time for a real energy line, and I'm going to let these boys know it.  They'll be able to steal 2nd-line duties any night, as long as they bring that energy and work-ethic to the ice every single shift: Higgins - Lapierre - D'Agostini.  These guys have good size, speed, and have shown intensity every game.  Let 'em roll.

5- Our 4th line has Latendress playing where he should be, on LW: Latendress - Metropolit - Kostopoulos.  Latendress shoots left, Metro and Kosto both shoot right.

6- Dressing Laraque and O'Byrne for subs if we need them. I could see changing the flavor of the 4th line by substituting Laraque for Kostopoulos.

7- Defensive pairings (L/R): Schneider - Komisarek; Hamrlik - Dandenault; Gorges - Brisebois.  Dressing O'Byrne in case of injury.  He could see some time in place of Dandenault or Brisebois depending on in-game dynamics.

8- PP1: #1line and #1 def pairing;  PP2: #2 or #3 line depending on who deserves it, and #2 def pairing

9- PK1: 4th line (Kostopolous/Metropolit) and #1 def pairing, PK2: 3rd line (Higgins/Lapierre) and #2 def pairing

10 - Halak gets the start.  I'd explain to Carey that I need to change the skaters mindset, and by playing our backup they'll put more focus on the defensive game.  Halak's proven to be more stable then Carey anyway.  I'm sticking with Halak until he loses.  Then I will go back to Price.

That's it!  That is the formula for beating Boston, and winning the Stanley Cup.  Oh yeah, and make sure they all eat their Wheaties.
