A's claim Encarnacion
Looks like we won't have to non-tender him after all.
Rios claimed on trade waivers
Olney is reporting that someone has claimed Rios. The first try at waivers is revocable, so the Jays can pull him back, work out a trade with the claiming team, or give his contract to them. Rios has a full NTC, but I don't think that affects waiver claims.
It's all about the Bordens baby

In 2008, the Jays' payroll in Canadian dollars (valued at the start of the preceding offseason) was about $100MM. In 2009, the Jays' payroll in canadian dollars (valued at the start of the preceding offseason) was about $100MM.
Crasnick on Wells
ESPN actually wrote a story about a Jay? I'm keeping my eye out for horsemen.
Why bother pinch hitting?
Dave Cameron thinks we're successful in part because we don't pinch hit, considering how poorly pinch hitters have been hitting.
Lineup Optimization
I know we had a fanpost about two months ago about what our lineup would probably look like, but Sky Kalkman has a hub for what each team's lineup should look like, and we haven't joined in yet.

Glaus/Rolen trade looks better for Jays
If you had to pick one of the players in this deal to miss 3 months following arthroscopic surgery on his shoulder, you'd have picked Rolen, right? But you'd have been wrong.
Fun with the 09 schedule
The '09 schedule is out, so let's take a look.
RISP
We all know about the team's poor performance with RISP, to the order of a .234 AVG (although perhaps we didn't notice our opponents' even worse performance, a mere .225). But who's really to blame?
Jays close to adding Eckstein?
According to (among other things) http://toronto.bluejays.mlb.com/news/article.jsp?ymd=20071213&content_id=2324652&vkey=news_t or&fext=.jsp&c_id=tor, the jays are close to a deal with Eckstein. No terms given.
Hill got Hitched
According to the Fresno Bee, Aaron Hill married Elisabeth Kenfield over the weekend in Monterey.
2008 tentative home schedule is out
and it's pretty bad, although not "no weekend home series vs. Red Sox or Yankees" bad. The Jays have 3 wraparound series, all in the first two months. Also, the Jays only face the Rangers twice at home, although considering how they seem to have our number, maybe that's a blessing in disguise.
Gibbons to return next year
Trade Glaus for his own good?
Glaus is slugging 155 points better on grass this year vs. on turf (.533 vs. .388). His turf numbers are inflated by the period in April before he got put on the DL for the aforementioned spurs. Since April he's slugging .326 on turf vs. .543 on grass.
Pitchers need your support
I thought I'd go through and add up how many runs the jays score in games started by each of the starters who've started more than a handful of games.
That'll prove Sparrow wrong
If the Jays were hoping to prove to Josh Towers that they come to the ballpark prepared to win every day, they did a pretty poor job of it.
The trade deadline has passed...
...and we did nothing. No real surprise, as the places where our system is shallow with talent are the ones where players on long-term contracts have underperformed and/or been injured. If we were going to make a move it should have been as soon as we lost B.J. Ryan.
League up, De Jong down
According to the canada.com game recap (http://www.canada.com/topics/sports/story.html?id=5e63e6d8-76bb-41b5-b19a-a6e67c6ad5e5&k=41259), the Jays activated League from AAA after tonight's loss and sent De Jong back down.
More DL news
If you were waiting for the other shoe to drop, it just fell on Aaron Hill.
More roster shuffling
A minor league pitcher is released, and a bullpen pitcher is sent down and replaced with another prospect. Guess which ones.
Burnett headed to DL after all?
USA Today: Blue Jays' Burnett likely headed to disabled list
A choice quote: "You get used to it," Gibbons said of the rash in injuries. "It doesn't phase[sic] you anymore."
Yeah, well maybe it should faze you when you make a guy throw 370 pitches over 3 outings and he comes up lame. The question is whether Ricciardi will let Gibbons get away with this one. Sadly, I'm guessing yes.
