Baseball performance through March
[Bumped to the Front Page.]
With a month and a half in the books, let's take a look at some of the numbers from the baseball team to date. Technically these stats are only through March 30, but I might not be motivated to do this tomorrow, so today's 4-3 win over aTm isn't reflected in what you see below. Overall, Mizzou is 16-10 and 3-2 in the conference, recovering nicely from an early 5 game losing streak(including a sweep at the hands of San Francisco). A win tomorrow to take the series from #7 aTm, in College Station no less, would set them up very nicely to keep themselves in the top half of the conference. On to the individual numbers.....
ESPN with some 2012 scheduling nuggets
Of note to Mizzou:
- Home against Georgia (likely Sept 8)
- Bama is our non-rival West opponent (ugh)
- Tennessee in Knoxville in November
aTm game to kick off at 11 on FX
I can't help but think of Ubben's preview of the Big 12 slate, and how one of his reasons for Mizzou not having success in College Station this time was that the game would certainly be under the lights. Guess not.
This makes 4 of 8 Mizzou games visible to the entire country, which is really a remarkable percentage considering how much of ABC/ESPN's coverage has gone regional.

Mizzou 4th in Preseason Hoops B12 coaches poll
Someone gave them a first place vote, which I took to mean that Billy Gillispie had one or seven too many before filling out his ballot. KU and aTm tie for the 1st place spot.
Tristen Holt arrested for leaving accident scene
[Insert "he didn't turn around and find the other car" jokes here]
Familiarity Breeds Contempt
Mizzou's road woes have been pretty well documented this year, but they've also had some disappointment in beating Texas Tech and losing to aTm by worse margins than previous games with them. Let's take a quick look at that phenomenon, and see how Mizzou has fared against conference teams for the first and second time.

Arizona St. game moved to Friday for ESPN
Is it some sort of rule that we have to play on a weeknight when we play in that time zone? New Mexico, Nevada, and now Arizona State.
There is no logical reason to value the road fact over the home fact. They are both facts that are equally true. People will say there are no tournament games at home, but there aren’t any true road games either. It so happens that most teams that dominate at home are very good on the road and vice versa, and thus there’s a lot of overlap in both groups. The exceptions are interesting, though, and Kentucky represents an exception this season, just as Duke did last season, and Missouri did in 2009.
In Criticism of Mike Anderson
We don't see a whole lot of outright criticism here at RMN, and with good reason. Both our football and basketball programs have propelled the athletic department to what's likely it's highest point of sustained success in school history. But beyond the fullback and Fire Anderson jokes, these programs aren't perfect. Here's an example.
Real Opponent - Cupcake Splits: Why Missouri is Finally Catching up to their Preseason Rank
Dan Hanner compares Pomeroy's efficiency margin in games v. Top 100 opponents v. teams ranked 100+ and finds Mizzou is one of the teams performing significantly better against the better competition.

F is for Futurama
Sometimes only robot humor can sum up the depths of sadness a team can sink to, and those times usually have something to do with Ron Zook.http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oMT3niGHWY8
Illinois had a lead, which means they were going to lose a lead, which they did, blowing a 13-3 halftime lead and losing 23-13 to Missouri. If we could teleport into the soul of an Illini fan for just on second, it would have been at the moment when Mizzou's Carl Gettis downed a punt at the Illinois 1 early in the fourth quarter. Sitting there on the one yard line with a freshman quarterback looking 99 yards down the field at the endzone they needed to get to, the sense of impending doom must have been so vivid it had its own smell and taste, something like "Ron Zook's FAILpops for Children: Now With Real Glass!"

Battles of note:
Lawrence and Moore are co-first team RBs.
WR depth: JACKSON/Washington/Woodland, Moe/McGaffie/Sasser, Kemp/Gerau/Lucas (Where did Clark go?)
Grabner is the 1st team punter over Barrow
None of the suspended players are even listed. Madison is the new long snapper.

Matter talks 9 game conference schedule, KU Associate AD not a math major
Everyone seems to be in favor of it. Matter also points out the premium on non-conference games, and how K-State now has to work games against Miami, Oregon and Virginia Tech that were scheduled in the Ron Prince era. Ron Prince, the gift that keeps on giving.
The KU quotes in question after the jump:
Mizzou 2nd in the Big 12 in APR
Only Texas had a higher average rank. Volleyball and Tennis the only teams below D-1 average. Best in the conference teams were: Women's Hoops, Women's Golf, Gymnastics, Men's and Women's Swimming and Diving, and Women's Indoor and Outdoor Track.
@englishscope24 When I say phonebooth. That means I rarely fade away, or drift left or right. Imagine shooting a jumper n a phonebooth. Sr8 UP, Sr8 down.
2011 gets a commitment
Wesley Leftwich, Hickman WR. Rivals lists him 6-1, 192 with a 40 time of 4.4 and a vertical of 34 inches. You can see his speed on display in these two YouTube vids of his 2008 and 2009 seasons, respectively. He apparently shrunk from year to year.
Leftwich makes 3 commits for 2011 with Sheldon Richardson and QB Corbin Berkstresser, and officially pushes our WR depth to "gluttony" levels. Also, I'm apparently not bright enough to figure out how to embed those videos.
In fact, Hoch mentioned that he was recruited to play H back at Mizzou (as was Trey Millard, at Rock Bridge). This would continue a trend that began midseason with Andrew Jones functioning more as a blocker than a receiving threat.

Any thoughts on this? Shift in philosophy? Simply semantics?

Category Two: Mascot: Nebraska relies formally on Herbie Husker, a jut jawed farmboy who looks like Terri Hatcher after a robust sex change operation and extensive hormone therapy. He has large feminized eyes, the kind of chin one can only get via a genetic condition, and large, feminine eyes you can stare into for days. If he succeeds in his plan to kidnap you and keep you in his crawlspace.

Illinois, Missouri just want to get pointed in the right direction
Nothing new here, but it's from Chris Brown of Smart Football, so it's worth a read. One thing I don't get is this opinion that Gabbert has markedly less mobility than Daniel. If anything, I think Gabbert might have more utility as a runner than Daniel, and he's certainly not slower than Chase despite being bigger.
